Latest in the Learning System Space

I admit I’m giddy. Not just for this post, but for my beloved Los Angeles Rams winning the Super Bowl. It’s easy if you are a die-hard fan to just savor the moment. Attending the Super Bowl showed me a lot of interesting tidbits.

The game was awesome, of course, but I’m talking about a few other factoids.

  • Pricing to attend this Super Bowl was the highest ever. It was bonkers to be quite honest. If you wanted to sit at the very top of the stadium, pricing was running initially around 7.5K per seat. It dropped down to around 3K by game time. It was if the NFL was unaware we are facing all these issues with the economy (tied to supply chain BTW, but I won’t go into that).
  • The famed Super Bowl souvenir cup was non existent. Okay, it was the size of a kiddie cup, and cost $7. Plus it was hard to even see that it came from the SB.
  • This was mobile ticket app only, so no hard ticket. Everyone I spoke with thought that you would get one. Nope. Oh, you could for $99 on HSN.

The point here is that people paid a lot and received nearly okay, nothing in return – for them to really get a benefit from the game, beyond attending the game.

In a way, that is what is occurring in the learning system space today. No, they are not offering Super Bowl tickets, nor promotional items for free to thank you for your purchase, but what they are doing in some angles, is saying “We appreciate you, but…”.

Let’s Dive In

Pricing

I would love to tell you that nobody is paying outrageous fees for the privilege of buying a learning system. The reality, of course, is they, err you are. The industry as a whole continues to increase seat fees. Ignore the whole “active user only ” aspect because the number that you should be focusing on is the total price number, which in many cases says, “up to”. With the exception of a vendor like Eurekos, who actually bills you per month based on usage, the majority of vendors require payment upfront. Ask yourself this, if they require payment or significant payment upfront, how can they know how many active users I really have?

I digress.

The seat numbers are going up. Last year, overall, they were the highest ever. In the early months of 2022, many vendors are surpassing that. I see the infamous yearly increase approach, as though the cost of living or supply chain plays a role here. Setup fees (for those who charge) are moving upward. Yet what you get is the same thing as you did before. Back to cost per seat. I feel bad for any business that has less than 500 end users. I say this because of the avg. cost per seat is sitting around $48 to $60 range. That is taking the cost per seat/per month and multiplying by 12.

Bands are changing too. A band for most vendors was 1,000 to 5,000 end users for example, now? 1,000 to 10,000. It may not seem like a big deal, but when you are running cost per seat, per user, it can be. I’ve seen vendors find other ways to boost the numbers. Want white-label? You pay. What an API? Even if it is in their marketplace.

Nobody should have to pay to have their system rebranded with their name on it, and not have the vendor’s name anywhere on it. Yet, more and more vendors are jumping on this, with the usual verbiage of “well most clients do not ask us to remove”, which I guess means if you don’t ask, you do not get. Oh, you want it? Pay us.

Coaching and Mentoring

This is starting to boost in the industry, but as with most things – regarding capabilities, it is all over the map. There are vendors who are offering end-users the ability to view “experts” and select the one(s) they want to be their coach/mentor. Others assign people. Some provide specific information around said expert, including their skill(s) forte, experience, and job role. That’s nice, but where are the ratings for these folks (from other learners who have selected them)? Wouldn’t it be great to also know what courses/content these folks are taking or have taken? I see trends and pluses here – yet, surprise, so far it is very rare. Honestly, who cares whether Sally is from San Diego? (Yes, I’ve seen location) I want to know what level of expertise Sally is with marketing analytics.

And that level of detail is right now is nearly non-existent.

Many vendors who offer coaching/mentoring are still in the text-based mode, which is pretty much reactive. There are vendors who are adding a webcam capability or recording yourself, which are big pluses, but again, so few are tapping into role-playing scenarios – which are available for the administrator to select from (actually, none when it comes to built-in scenarios, but yes there are those who offer scenario-based learning).

Analytics

Courses and content are commodities and trust me, you need them in your system. What drives your learning and training though, are metrics. Especially the right metrics – data. The whole “views” metric is about as beneficial, as the local amusement park promising that you won’t puke on the Octopus ride. It sounds good, but what does it really tell me? Learning-wise, nothing. Preventive puking-wise, still nothing. I mean, I just ate five Vegan hot dogs.

I want to show you a vendor’s metrics that provide really strong information and data. I will get to what trend in a second, that is happening in the space.

There are data points that are relevant to me as the head of L&D, Training, etc.

The engaged users are worthwhile. If I could drill down even further, by clicking on it, again, segmentation is huge. Popular subjects. Skill IQ (their term), but see the assessment (I prefer validation) tied to the specific skill they are trying to learn – in this case, Python. Avg skill growth – says to me, okay, who, what skills in particular, trend lines, and so on. (The screen is from Pluralsight).

Metrics tell a story about the impact of your learning and training. Even for those who do not have a background in either, something like “popular” subjects, offers me something that tells me a story.

Look at the data. It tells me a story. I see trend lines. I see percentages. I can read what the data means – thus even if I do not have a background in Training or L&D, I can get the gist of it. And for those who have a background in L&D or Training, again, the overall story is presented. Want to segment further? Fully doable.

What’s the early trend?

Vendors I have spoken with, are pushing into more metrics – especially around folks who have a BI tool and want to tap into the learning with it. They want to combine the business data with the learning data.

Vendors are also starting to add, albeit slowly, what they refer to as “advanced analytics”, targeting more of an add-on fee. I saw this on many a roadmap, and today there are more vendors who offer it than not.

On the flip side, LRS built into the system is still in snail mode. The vendors who offer it, as a whole, do not turn it on unless you ask for it. Again, this makes about as much sense as the NFL offering souvenir cups that are tiny for nonbeer purchases, but larger for beer (but no markings saying it is from the SB). Unless you ask, you have no idea. (I did ask and was told because it is for beer. Nice messaging)

An LRS captures everything. And can push out a lot of great data – if you choose to leverage it for your learning and training – i.e. can extract the keys – which are visible. The systems that have an LRS, as a whole, do not charge extra for it. If your system doesn’t offer it, you can go third party and have it fully integrated. My personal favorite is Watershed, but there are others.

For all those vendors adding advanced, and an equal number is streamlining to simple and frankly underwhelming data. It’s odd because as a whole, most systems are capturing far more data.

This will continue – either going full steam with advanced or going basic, that shows and tells – which is great if you are in Kindergarten.

Workforce Development

I prefer this term, but the legacy terms are performance/talent management.

I have no issue with some items under Workforce development – tied to courses/content, specifically learning and training aspects. The vendors punching this hard are adding job roles, and even opportunities /availabilities tied around content too. The job roles tied to skills tied to content are fair and acceptable, and some vendors note this under skill capabilities.

What early trend is showing through, are vendors who are trying to turn their learning into a combination sliding more towards employee development with more of an HR edge, than a learning focus. Learning plays a role, but it is not the key here. The folks they are targeting? HR people. L&D is secondary, Training? Forget it.

This is a very dangerous and slippery slope.

Once you go down this road, getting back to learning as the core, is nearly impossible. How do you message L&D for example, when the system brings in career development, opportunities, and borders without crossing into internal recruiting?

I can tell you that once you go this approach, nobody who oversees training, will eye you as a system. I wouldn’t. And I wouldn’t recommend it.

If HR is your core focus for your learning system, you are moving towards that slope. And there are vendors going that way.

Skills

Skills capabilities continue to dominate this early cycle. Skill ratings are appearing in more systems than before. What will be the biggest trend in 2022? Skills Plus Content – intertwined more so than before.

Fade Away?

It was a big trend in 2019, the increase in vendors offering a built-in authoring tool. Early data is pointing to this flatlining, as vendors now gear quite a bit towards the other King Kong Entry – A.I. tied around content, and no surprise skills.

The Fine Print

I noticed this trend starting in late 2021, but it was too early to know if it would continue or phase out. Depending on your perspective, it is continuing. The trend? Vendors (as a whole) focus on clients with a minimum of 1,000 end-users.

This trend opens up the door for so many vendors who are ideal for the under 1,000 employees size, even the 500 or less size.

Now there are vendors who will gladly accept 500 end-users, and still eye their ideal at 1,000. The question is whether their messaging aligns with either group or just the larger size.

The reasoning on why a lot of vendors focus on higher numbers is the premise that a larger user base means higher budgets. Yet, I know of F500 companies whose training budgets were very low, and companies with less than 1,000 that were in the six-figure range.

Bottom Line

Yes. It is early.

February to be exact.

But if you remove all the pageantry, the hype and recognize that vendors are already pushing specific capabilities, and pricing in one way,

you are left with one thing,

And it is not a hard copy

Practice These Entry-level PHP Interview Questions And Nail Your Next Interview

If you’re looking for a job in tech, PHP isn’t a bad place to start. PHP powers platforms like Facebook, WordPress, Yahoo, and Wikipedia. Since it’s one of the most commonly used programming languages, companies regularly need to hire PHP developers, from entry-level to advanced.

If you’re new to PHP and preparing to interview for a job that will require you to know how to use it, here are seven questions that you might be asked during your interview — and some possible answers to help you prep.

1. What is PHP? And how does it work?

You may not directly be asked this one, but it’s something you should know if you’ll be expected to use PHP in the role you’re interviewing for. PHP (or PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) is a general-purpose scripting language popular for developing dynamic web pages. Developers primarily program with PHP to work on the server-side of web programs. However, command-line scripting or writing desktop applications is also possible.

People use PHP to create the back-end of web-based applications. PHP mode in HTML documents allows the embedding of PHP script to perform tasks like collecting form data, generating dynamic page content, and working with cookies.

Even if you’re not asked to explain PHP, you can show your knowledge of PHP by explaining what you’ve personally used PHP for. Have you been involved in building a PHP-driven online community? Tell your interviewer about this. What about building an e-commerce website? Explain how you used PHP for that.

2. What types of functions are commonly used in PHP?

PHP allows for both user-defined functions, as well as internal (built-in) functions. Popular examples of a built-in function are ‘echo’ and ‘print,’ which are commonly used. Other internal functions include image, string, and variable functions.

User-defined functions are simply functions that are not built-in. They are written by the user. Examples of such functions are conditional functions, functions within functions, and recursive functions. Below is an example of pseudocode that defines a user’s function:

3. Have you used PEAR? If so, what is it?

Assuming you’ve used PEAR, here’s how you could answer this question:

PEAR stands for PHP Extension and Application Repository and is a PHP framework and distribution system for reusable PHP components. It’s a leading promoter of PHP syntax standards and is definitely good to know for any PHP developer.

Even if you haven’t used PEAR, you can still answer this question with the above. And just say you haven’t used PEAR yet, but you’re looking forward to using it on an upcoming project. Remember: You’re not expected to know everything during an interview, and it’s okay to say when you don’t know something.

4. What are the different types of variables present in PHP?

There are eight different types of PHP variables. They are Integers, Doubles, Booleans, NULL, Arrays, Strings, Resources, and Objects.

Note: If you’re asked this question, the interviewer probably doesn’t expect you to explain all eight variables. They might not even expect you to name all eight, but if you can, go for it. They’re probably looking for you to explain a few of them and how you would use them. Here are three options:

  1. Arrays: An array is a variable that can hold more than one value. Example: $colors = array(“red”, “yellow”, “blue”);
  2. Strings: A string is a sequence of characters. Ex: “Hello Codecademy!”
  3. NULL: NULL is used when a variable does not have a value. When no value is assigned to a variable, you can assign it with NULL.

5. What are the three types of Arrays in PHP? And what are they used for?

Indexed or Numeric Array: One type of array is an Indexed or Numeric Array, in which a list of ordered, stored data composites a data structure. Each element in an array is known as the index location. They are used to store, access, and manipulate data.

Associative Array: In PHP, associative arrays are map-like data structures where meaningful keys are assigned to values. Let’s look at an example (below), where the key “num” points to value “2”, and the key “material” points to the value “egg.”

$chicken = [“num” => 2, “material” => “egg”];

Multidimensional Array: The third type of array is the multidimensional array, which can contain an array at each index instead of elements. These types of arrays are used for organizing data, as well as simply storing more information

6. What is your experience with using loops in PHP?

This is a question where you should weave in details about your own work while also answering the original question. But each type of loop is used for a different purpose, so it’s good to have a solid understanding of when to use each one. Here’s a refresher on loops if you need it.  

Also, don’t shy away from getting technical with your answers. Explain how you would use the `break` keyword to terminate loops early and the `continue` keyword to pick up where you left off.

7. What databases have you used with PHP?

PHP supports several databases. Some that you might have experience with are MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, MongoDB, and Sybase.

The interviewer might ask you this question because learning how to use a supported database can be very beneficial to a web developer. It also shows that you know how to work with large sets of data with recognized software.

2. Do you need any custom pages?

By default, website design includes a styled homepage, blank pages, and blog-related elements (blog homepage, posts etc). Sometimes you may get an extra ‘Contact’ or ‘About’ page. If there are any other pages you already know you need, make sure to communicate it with a designer or check if premade designs you buy have them.

Some of our WordPress premade designs have included pages like Recipe Index or Galerry. All of the Custom designs come with the basic pages (‘Contact’, ‘About’ etc) but we are more than happy to add any other pages you need since the custom pages are tailored for each customer separately.


3. Are you looking for any specific features?

Options like Shop, Portfolio, or Recipe Index can increase website design costs.

In most cases, you can add them later if your starting budget is low. So do not stress about getting everything done at once. However, it is good to mention that you consider any specific feature when talking with someone about your design. This way, you will make sure that they can be added later, and you can get a price check to prepare your wallet for your website upgrade.

Weekly Accessible Learning Activities: Truck Drivers, Basketball Heroes and Love

Each Wednesday we shine a spotlight on five student activities that support a broad range of learners. In this week’s roundup of accessible activities, we invite students to write a love poem, learn about truck drivers, watch a film about the “Queen of Basketball,” look closely at an intriguing photo and write an original story.

1. Write a love poem.

In this Student Opinion, students read a short poem about love by Gabrielle Calvocoressi, and then reflect on the different kinds of love they have experienced — romantic, platonic or familial. We invite students to share a small motion, or gesture, of love that someone has done for them in our comments section — or even write their own love poem.

2. Learn about truck drivers in America.

In this Lesson of the Day, students ride alongside a trucker on a 1,000-mile journey from Missouri to Texas to find out what the job is really like. Then they interview someone in their family or community whose job they think is very difficult and who deserves more appreciation.

3. Watch a film about the “Queen of Basketball.”

In this week’s Film Club, students watch “The Queen of Basketball,” a 22-minute Oscar-nominated film that tells the story of Lusia “Lucy” Harris Stewart, one of women’s basketball’s most accomplished players. Then they reflect on what we can learn from the life of one of basketball’s unsung heroes.

4. Make observations about a photograph.

What’s Going On in This Picture invites students to look closely at a photograph published in The Times, and try to figure out what is happening in the image. Students can read what other students have noticed in the image, as well as moderator responses, in the comments section.

5. Tell a story inspired by an image.

In this Picture Prompt we encourage students to use their imagination to write the opening of a short story or poem inspired by this photo — or, tell us about a memory from their own life that this image makes them think of.

Are You a Risk-Taker?

In one of those essays, “I Admit It. I’m in Love With Fear.,” Eileen Gu, an 18-year-old freeskier who won gold in the women’s freeski big air competition and silver in freeski slopestyle, writes that, for her, risk-taking is “addictive”:

FOR THE LAST 10 OF MY 18 YEARS, I’ve pursued a tumultuous love affair with fear. I’m a professional freeskier, and twin-tipped skis, 22-foot halfpipes and double-cork rotations are my main sources of adrenaline, the truly addictive core of extreme sports.

Like all bewitching lovers (at least the ones in the novels I read, for lack of real-world experience), this significant other can be … mercurial. “Fear” is really an umbrella term for three distinct sensations: excitement, uncertainty, and pressure. I’ve learned that the nuanced indicators of each of these feelings can be instrumental to success when recognized and positively leveraged, and harbingers of injury when ignored.

Though it’s easy to label extreme sport athletes as fearless or capricious, the countless hours I’ve spent visualizing tricks and practicing them in foam pits (foam. particles. everywhere) and on airbags (think giant Slip ’N Slide) suggest otherwise. It’s biologically counterintuitive for us to place ourselves in positions of risk, and while we make every effort to physically prepare, no amount of metaphorically safety-netted practice can equate to the unforgiving snow slope that rushes up to meet us after a steep kicker launches us into the air. Instead of ignoring fear, we build unique relationships with it by developing a profound sense of self-awareness and making deliberate risk assessments.

The work begins with visualization. Before I attempt a new trick, I feel a tightening high in my chest, between the base of my throat and the top of my diaphragm. I take a deep breath and close my eyes. As I ascend the gargantuan takeoff ramp, I imagine extending my legs to maximize lift. Then I picture twisting my upper body in the opposite direction I intend to spin, generating torque before I allow it to snap back the other way.

Now, in my mind, I’m airborne. I see the backside of the takeoff immediately, then my flip draws my vision to the cloudless sky above me. My ears register the wind as a kind of song, every 360-degree rotation providing the beat to the music of my motion. As my feet come under me halfway through, I spot the landing for the briefest of moments before I pull my body into the second flip. I imagine my legs swinging under me as I return to a forward-facing position and meet the ground with my weight in the front of my boots. 1440 degrees. I smile. Then I open my eyes.

In the split second following my visualization, the knot in my chest flutters and spreads — those famous butterflies reaching their final stage of metamorphosis. Excitement, the child of adrenaline, my true love and addiction. That tantalizingly precarious balance between confidence in my ability to execute the trick safely and excitement for the unpredictable experience to come. I’ve heard this state called “the zone,” which is indeed where I was when I became the first female skier in history to land the double cork 1440 last fall.

Students, read the rest of Ms. Gu’s essay and watch the accompanying videos. Or explore one or more of the other articles in the series on getting hurt, trying new tricks, dealing with bad weather and skiing nearly blind in the Paralympics. Then tell us:

  • Would you describe yourself as a risk-taker? Do extreme feats, physical or otherwise, excite you?

  • What is the most daring thing you have ever done? It could be a physical feat, such as an extreme sport, or it could be something else, like speaking in front of a large group, having a brave conversation or trying something new. How did it make you feel?

  • Ms. Gu describes several steps she takes to face her fear, including visualization and practice. What do you do to ease your worries when taking a risk?

  • Ms Gu writes that feelings of fear “can be instrumental to success when recognized and positively leveraged, and harbingers of injury when ignored.” Can you think of a time when fear motivated you to take a risk that led to success? What about a time when it protected you from going too far?

  • What do you think is the difference between being reckless and making “calculated risks,” which is what many of these athletes say they do? When you are taking a risk, how do you assess the dangers of it? How do you know when to push forward and when to pull back?

  • What did you learn about fear and risk-taking from Ms. Gu, or from the other athletes you read about? What lessons from them can you apply to your own life?

For several weeks, truck drivers protesting vaccine mandates have been parking their rigs to block the flow of traffic on major highways and bridges across Canada. On Feb. 14, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared a national public order emergency in an attempt to stop the blockades.

In this lesson, you will learn about how the protests started, the protesters’ demands and how the Canadian government has responded. Then, you will reflect on the article, analyze the signs, symbols and slogans associated with the movement, and learn more about how Canadians understand the demonstrations.

Watch this three-minute video from PBS NewsHour to learn about the protests that have been taking place in Canada. Then, in your own words, summarize the who, what, where, how and why of the situation:

Read the article, then answer the following questions:

1. How did the current protest movement begin? What prompted the truckers to take action?

2. Mr. Trudeau initially dismissed the protesters as a “small fringe minority.” What evidence supports that sentiment?

3. The article states that “the protesters are having an outsize impact for their small numbers.” What are some of the ways in which this movement has had an impact in Canada and beyond?

4. How have protesters raised money for their cause? Who has donated to them?

5. What is significant about the national public order emergency? What is the goal of this action?

6. Who are the leaders and organizers of the protests? What actions have they taken to control the messaging of the movement, and to support the protesters?

Option 2: Look closely and analyze.

Take a few minutes to look more closely at the photos and captions in the featured article, this related article or the most recent updates.

Then, discuss the following questions with your classmates:

  • What do you notice about the photos? What story do they tell about the movement?

  • What signs, slogans and symbols do you see at the protests?

  • Do these images remind you of any that you have seen in the United States or in your country?

  • What do these photos tell you about the movement, and even about Canada itself?

  • What questions do you have about what these photos show?

5 Ways Smart Tech Is Improving Cities — & How You Can, Too

Not familiar with the “Internet of Things” (IoT)? Well, it’s familiar with you. IoT refers to everyday physical objects that are embedded with internet connectivity. Think: Google Home and Amazon’s Alexa. But there’s more to the tech than just personal assistance.

Cities around the world are implementing IoT into their infrastructures to address systemic problems and make life much easier in ways most of us probably take for granted. From reducing our collective carbon footprint to monitoring air quality, IoT can do so much more than just tell you what the weather is before you leave the house (though that is pretty cool).

As Limor “Ladyada” Fried, CEO of Adafruit Industries and founding member of the NYC Industrial Business Advisory Council, told us:

“The most exciting part of IoT’s future is seeing makers and coders design the devices that best suit them and their communities. Instead of relying on what’s available in the store, customization and optimizations will let small-scale engineering happen by the people who will actually use it!”

So if you’re wondering how learning to code can help you build a better, more optimized world, here are some examples of how innovations in IoT are changing cities for the better.

1. Smart streetlights

Stargazers rejoice! To help reduce light pollution, cities are starting to implement smart streetlights that automatically adjust light levels depending on the time of day and traffic and road conditions. A handful of states in the U.S. — like California, Georgia, and Michigan — already have them.

More importantly, these streetlights help conserve energy and use it more efficiently. Tvilight, a company that offers smart streetlights, reports that its tech has reduced energy consumption by over 60% in cities in Germany, India, and the Netherlands. Some smart streetlights also come with motion sensors that base light levels on human presence, lowering energy consumption and CO2 emissions even further.

In the near future, smart streetlights could even be used to improve emergency services and prevent crime, according to Intel.

2. Smart roads

Traffic isn’t just annoying to sit in, it’s also expensive. One estimate suggests that traffic congestion cost the average U.S. driver $564 in wasted time in 2021, according to Inrix. That’s one of the reasons why more and more companies are combating the issue by inventing smart materials that can be added to roads to make them safer and more efficient.

Smart Pavement from Integrated Roadways, for example, is concrete with embedded sensors that detect accidents and roadway conditions as people drive in real time. The information and feedback is then shared with other drivers, central processing hubs, and emergency services.

Technologies like Smart Pavement can quite literally save lives by notifying first responders as soon as an accident occurs. In the U.S., you can find these smart roads in Colorado and Kansas.

There are also innovative new technologies like Studio Roosegaarde’s Smart Highway. These solar-powered smart roads charge by day and glow by night, offering drivers greater visibility (and a very futuristic ambiance).

3. Smart energy management

The U.S. government is coming up with new ways to utilize energy more efficiently and help consumers track and manage their household energy use. You may have heard of “smart grids,” which use communication technologies and control systems to help prevent and mitigate power outages. They also give consumers greater access to their data, empowering them to make more informed decisions about how they consume energy on an individual level.

The U.K. is making similar efforts with the widespread adoption of smart energy meters. These smart meters provide a more accurate analysis of people’s energy use, down to each specific appliance.

This makes it easier for people to monitor and manage their energy usage (and hopefully cut down on their electric bills). According to Forbes, they’re expected to be seen in every home and small business in the U.K. by June 2025. If you live in the U.S., you might already have one — The Edison Foundation shows that they’re already implemented into 75% of households as of 2021.

4. Smart trash management

IoT technology is also being used to keep our cities clean.

In 2019, San Francisco implemented smart trash cans throughout the city with sensors that detect when they’re near-full and automatically notify trash collection agencies. Not only has this helped keep garbage off the streets, but it also potentially reduces carbon emissions by streamlining trash collection.

Seoul, South Korea, achieved similar results after implementing their own smart trash cans, Clean Cubes. Since installation, waste overflow was eliminated, street litter has reduced significantly, and the city reduced collection costs by 83%.

5. Smart air quality sensors

To combat air pollution, cities are using IoT tech to gather data and gauge residents’ levels of exposure. With this data, cities can better identify areas with poor air quality, assess the relationship between pollutants and diseases, and potentially encourage officials to take action.

In parts of Chicago and Barcelona, for example, lampposts and park benches contain air sensors that are used to track air quality and identify pollutants, Harvard reports. There are also mobile sensors that attach to Google’s Street View cars and quickly scan air quality as they drive around cities.
