Interleaving: A Classroom Experiment

The learning phase took place over 9 weeks in the classroom. During this time, the students received their normal lessons and assignments. There were four different types of problems that were a part of the experiment, and the students’ assignments were constructed so that across the nine weeks they saw 12 different problems of each of the four types. All students learned two types of problems interleaved throughout the assignments, and they learned the other two types of problems blocked in the assignments. However, the problems assigned to these two conditions (interleaving and blocking) were counterbalanced, meaning that across the entire experiment half of the students interleaved each type of problem and half blocked each type of problem. Counterbalancing ensures that any performance differences are not due to some types of problems being easier or harder for the students, and shows us true differences between the two different conditions in the experiment.

When a type of problem was learned through blocking, all 12 practice problems for the students to solve appeared in the same assignment. When a type of problem was learned through interleaving, the first four practice problems for the students to solve appeared in one assignment, and the remaining eight practice problems were distributed across the remaining assignments. In other words, these last eight problems were all mixed up in later assignments to create interleaving.

The researchers rearranged the problems within the assignments to reflect the appropriate blocking and interleaving conditions for students in the math classes, and researchers scored each assignment after the teachers collected them for the purposes of the experiment.

The assessment phase

Two weeks after the none-week learning phase ended, the students were given a surprise assessment test. The test was a surprise so that students would not cram before the test. The researchers created the test, and the teachers did not know what was on it prior to administering it. This procedure ensures that the students weren’t exposed to the problems before the test.

(As an aside, this does not mean researchers don’t trust teachers! We do this in the lab, too. Keeping as much of the procedure “blind” as possible just helps make sure no one accidentally or implicitly biases the results.)

Results

The results are short and sweet! Interleaving practice resulted in test performance that was almost twice as high as blocking practice. Students earned 72% on the problems they interleaved, whereas they earned 38% on the problems they blocked.

This experiment provides another example of effective learning strategies being tested in the classroom, and shows that interleaving even very different types of math problems led to greater learning than blocking them.

I have been learning a lot about neurodiversity and the way we think about divergence vs. disorders. I have appreciated learning about these areas so much, and have appreciated the opportunities to hear experts and those who have experience with neurodiversity (many different types of experiences!) discuss these issues. However, I feel that this is a topic that has long been ignored, and many of us have a lot to learn in this area. Older Adults

This is a summary of a review of research by Dr. Sarah Barber at Georgia State University demonstrating how stereotype threat can impair not only cognition, but motor tasks in older adults.

This describes a single research study that demonstrates the effect described above wherein older adults who are primed with negative stereotypes related to driving perform worse on a driving test.

Reading Strategies for College Students

Reading Strategies for College Students

As a memory researcher I was obviously interested in what reading strategies would leverage encoding to improve reading comprehension. My main area of expertise is in human learning and memory which does occasionally brush up with research on reading comprehension, but they tend to be separate fields. So I was excited to see some very familiar terms and strategies in this section.

The two main strategies that Lei and colleagues recommend here are outlining and concept mapping. Both really achieve the same purpose which is to help students organize and elaborate on their understanding of the material. They note that “the use of an outline presents the visual organization of a textbook that function to prepare readers for identification of major topics and relevant information within the text … The outline serves as a guide for facilitating information retrieval by providing specific cues that are applied during the learning experience” (pg 38). The authors recommend providing skeletons of outlines that students fill out with notes and other information to connect the outline to the text (5). 

Similar to outlines, concept maps also provide a visual organization of information. Based on the authors’ description of concept mapping, the benefit to reading comprehension seems to come from the process of creating the concept map – identifying the concepts, the links among concepts, and the hierarchy of concepts – rather than the concept map itself per se. In other words, to receive a benefit of concept mapping students need to create the concept map and not just be given the concept map. The authors also note that some students need instruction and practice with concept mapping before getting a benefit from them. Their discussion of concept mapping seems similar to what Megan has discussed with retrieval mapping

How I Plan to Implement These Strategies

In thinking about how to use these encoding strategies in my upper-level course I’ve settled on including outlining as an additional learning opportunity. In the “ungrading” approach I’m using, students will have to create Learning Portfolios throughout the semester to demonstrate their learning. There are a few required elements to the Learning Portfolio – indicating that they have read or watched all of the assigned material and submitting all required papers – but there are optional, additional learning opportunities that they may include in their portfolio to make the case for a higher grade. Creating detailed outlines are a great way to improve their reading comprehension and to demonstrate how they have worked to improve their understanding of course material.

Reading flexibility was the shortest section in Lei et al.’s review paper, but I found it to be the most interesting strategy. Lei and colleagues stress that “Students must learn to adjust their speed and style of reading to their reading objectives and the type of materials to be read… Some reading materials can be scanned, skimmed through, and read lightly, while others must [be] read closely and critically” (pg 40). 

Students are often shocked when I tell them NOT to read something closely. While I appreciate the default assumption that everything assigned is important and therefore deserves close and critical reading, it’s simply not practical nor is it reflective of how experts in the area read. In searching for articles on reading strategies I did not read the entirety of every article I encountered in order to determine if it was useful to me. Instead, there are several decision points I used to decide whether an article was useful for my purposes and whether I should continue to read it. Many were rejected on the basis of the title alone. If the article had a title that seemed like what I was looking for then I read the abstract. Again more were rejected at that stage. If the title and abstract looked good then I skimmed the article – generally reading a few paragraphs in the introduction to see if the background information and questions explored would line up with my interests, then skimming the methods to see which population was studied (I’m an instructor at an American University teaching young adults whose first language is primarily English), and finally jumping ahead to the conclusion to review the main takeaways. Only after doing that with several articles did I read an article critically – i.e. highlighting key points, noting connections in the margins and even looking up some of the cited papers. 

How I Plan to Implement These Strategies

From talking with my students this does not seem to be the approach they use. They sit down to read papers from start to finish, taking away what they can never to return again. The idea that you can read at different levels for different goals is somewhat novel. I plan to discuss reading flexibility with my students several times throughout the course. First, I’ll need to introduce the idea of skim vs critical reading noting that there are specific strategies to skim reading academic articles. Next, we’ll need to talk about skim reading as the first step in critical reading. Getting the big picture of a text to help guide you through a subsequent closer read. This seems like a natural point to start building an outline of a paper if students choose to do that as an additional learning activity. Finally, the notes and highlights you make while reading will depend on what you are trying to understand from the paper. For every reading I’ve included 2 or 3 guiding questions to help students read the papers more critically. 

Taken together, I found the strategies recommended by Lei et al. (2010) very helpful in preparing for my course this semester. I hope that providing some examples and discussion of my own course design process is helpful to others who are going through the same process as the fall semester is about to start.

I don’t regret the time I’ve spent on social media. I’ve met interesting people. I’ve had real-life adventures instigated by virtual relationships. I’ve been emboldened to challenge myself and grow as a person and, yes, clap back if you clap first.

But I have more of a life than I once did. I have a wife, a busy career, aging parents and a large family. I have more physical mobility and, in turn, more interest in being active and out in the world. I now spend most of my time with people who are not Very Online. November Vocabulary Challenge: Write a Story Using Our Words of the Day

Our story-writing challenge is back for a second school year. Middle and high school students are invited to choose four or more of the Words of the Day we published in October, then use them in a 50-word story. We will publish a few of our favorite submissions as examples for the January challenge.

Start by getting familiar with the vocabulary words published in October. It may help to read the linked definitions and examples of how the words have been used in The New York Times.

Then, create a 50-word piece of writing in which you correctly and creatively use at least four of the words. Submit your story (or poem, or song) by commenting on this post between now and Nov. 30.

Here is what we are looking for:

  • It is most important that you use each vocabulary word correctly — according to its definition. We will not consider any entries in which a word is used incorrectly.

  • Use as many vocabulary words as you can, but without crossing a line into gibberish or inanity. Do not simply list the words; we are looking for entries that demonstrate your understanding of the vocabulary.

  • Finally, we are looking for pieces of writing that are creative, original and make sense. Your comment can be fact or fiction, silly or serious; we care most that you learn new vocabulary and have fun.

And here are a few more rules:

  • Your story must be 50 words or fewer and use at least four of the listed vocabulary words.

  • Identify your vocabulary words by writing them in ALL CAPS (see the bottom of this post for examples).

  • It is acceptable to use a word in a different tense or to use the plural of a word that is listed in the singular.

  • However, you cannot change a word’s part of speech. For example, since the word “candor” is listed as a noun, you cannot substitute the adjective “candid.”

Weekly Accessible Learning Activities: Skateboarding, Six-Word Memoirs and Spooky Season

Each Wednesday we shine a spotlight on five student activities that support a broad range of learners. In this week’s roundup of accessible activities, we invite students to explore the world of skateboarding, write a six-word memoir about their pandemic experience, and try their hand at the New York Times Spelling Bee game.

1. Learn about skateboarding and reflect on communities where you can express your full self.

This Lesson of the Day brings students into the world of skateboarding through photographs and poetic language. Then, it asks students to explore the cardinal rule of skateboarding — “dare to be you” — as they think about a community where they feel supported and respected.

2. Write a six-word memoir about your pandemic experience.

In this Student Opinion, students learn about the six-word memoir, and then write their own about the last 19 months. In the comments section, they can submit their pandemic six-word memoirs and read hundreds of examples written by other students.

3. Watch a conversation with Native Americans on the topic of race.

This Film Club focuses on a 2017 documentary featuring seven people with a range of perspectives on what it means to be Native American today. Students will watch the film and respond to the questions, sharing their reflections in the comments section.

4. Participate in a New York Times Spelling Bee game.

While The New York Times’s best-known word game may be the Crossword, educators should not overlook its younger, less intimidating cousin: Spelling Bee. The hive-shaped Spelling Bee challenges readers to make as many words as they can from a set of seven unique letters. Students can try the five puzzles in this resource, organized from easiest to hardest.

5. Share what “spooky season” means to you.

In this Picture Prompt, students react to an image and describe what they love — or hate — about October, and this spooky time of year. They can share their descriptive writing in the comments section.

Technology has become a large part of the day-to-day operations of most businesses and government agencies. As a result, the security of data has become a priority for these organizations.

Ethical hacking involves identifying vulnerabilities and working to prevent malicious hackers from penetrating and obtaining sensitive information. In the U.S., the average salary for an Ethical Hacker is $101,750 a year.

Still, that rate can vary widely depending on factors like certifications, education, experience, and additional skills. Below, we’ll take a closer look at how these factors influence an Ethical Hacker’s salary and job opportunities.

Experience

Experience plays a huge role in an Ethical Hacker’s salary. While many jobs in ethical hacking don’t require a specific degree, many do require a substantial amount of job-related experience.

According to PayScale, an Ethical Hacker with less than one year of experience can expect to earn around $67,000 a year. Someone with a bit more experience, at 1-4 years, can expect about $81,000 per year.

Mid-career Ethical Hackers who’ve worked for 5-9 years earn an average of $100,000 annually. Finally, the highly experienced 10-19-year-long Ethical Hackers take in about $115,000 annually.

As an Ethical Hacker, with every year you work, your pay will increase as you learn new skills and techniques along the way. As an Ethical Hacker solves more problems and helps find new ways to protect an organization, their value within the company increases accordingly.

Location

Ethical hacking jobs in the United States vary depending on the region you’re working in. Just as with other jobs, when the cost of living is higher in a particular area, the pay rate generally increases to match.

For example, an Ethical Hacker working in New York City can earn 10.7% higher than the national average at $112,637, while someone in San Antonio, Texas, could earn 23.7% less at $78,652.

Some areas, like California, vary greatly even when their towns are only a short distance from each other. If you work in San Jose, you could make 27% over the average annual salary. But, if you live just a few hours south in Los Angeles, you’ll be making closer to 2% higher than average.

Job Title

Having a job as an Ethical Hacker can involve many responsibilities that often get categorized under different job titles. Along with the factors above, your job title may influence your salary. Here are a few examples of the different pay scales for Certified Ethical Hackers:

  • Network Security Analyst: $41,362 – $106,823
  • Penetration Tester: $50,845 – $127,714
  • Cyber Security Analyst: $48,086 – $118,991
  • Forensics Computer Analyst: $42,684 – $118,616
  • Information Security Manager: $73,241 – $153,163
  • Security Engineer: $56,017 – $132,536
  • Information Security Analyst: $48,522 – $107,004

Each of these positions has different requirements and responsibilities, so your salary can vary greatly depending on your specific role.

Education

There are many paths you could take to become an Ethical Hacker. Every company has its own criteria for what they’re looking for and what certifications (if any) they want you to have. But, if you want to stand out in a job interview and end up in a higher salary bracket, specific training will help.
