What Students Are Saying About Waking Up in the Morning

It has always been a struggle for me to wake up in the morning. Though the smell of pancakes and bacon is tempting, the bed has always won the clash. The light shining through the blinds like the sun although silent is pleading for me to start my day — again tempting — but to no avail. I have so many alarms set in the morning that I swear everyone else in my house hears them but me. The snooze button is an old friend of mine. One of my biggest problems seems to follow me for only the first 30 minutes of my being awake. The grogginess chases after me until something just clicks in me and suddenly it whisks away — like it was never there to begin with. A never-ending cycle, morning after morning, battling with the notion that another 20 minutes wouldn’t hurt.

I’m definitely not a morning person. As such, waking up in the morning can be difficult, but it’s hard not to do with my mom around. She has somehow managed to perfect the art of getting me and my sister to wake up. First, she has to make staying in bed less comfortable. If it’s too comfortable I’ll never get up. So she comes into my room announcing it’s time to wake up, turning on my light and turning off my fan. Seems simple enough, but I rarely wake up to this step alone. So, around five to ten minutes later, I can expect to receive a text asking if I am awake yet. If I do not respond, that tells her I’m still asleep. I will then receive a phone call. As someone who sleeps with their phone next to their pillow, that is pretty hard to sleep through. This will usually wake me up. However, she’ll still send texts, periodically giving minute warnings about how long we have until we have to leave for school or work. It’s become so routine that if she misses a text, my sister will send it before her just for fun. Though on the weekends, I just sleep until noon.

Every morning at exactly six o’clock I slam my hand down against my phone screen. Trying to make the aggravating noise stop before my ears bleed out. I roll over and drift back to sleep in complete comfort. After a couple minutes the aggravation returns and by this point in time I’ve had enough. I turn my alarm off, throw my phone across the room, and roll back over in my heavenly bed. A little while passed and I’m disturbed once again, but this time by my parents. Either my mom or dad comes into my room and tells me I need to get up. I shrug them away and tell them I’m up, which is obviously a lie. I go back to sleep. The next time they come into my room they aren’t so happy. They scream at me until I’m forced out of bed. I groggily walk out of my room and through the house getting ready, making no interactions with anyone. This leaves me little to no time to get ready. I brush my teeth, throw on some sweats, and head out the door. Once I’m in the toasty car and have my luscious seat warmers on, I struggle to keep my eyes open. So, of course, I drift back into slumber until we tragically get to school.

My sister wakes me up around 6:30 (it takes her a lot of tries to do so) for morning prayer and it takes me like 20 minutes to finish my prayer reading the Quran … I don’t need an alarm because my sister is my alarm. She is annoying and she won’t let me sleep, either.

I start every morning with the same dreaded, incessant noise meaning I have to get out of my warm bed and into the cold morning. Though I try to avoid hitting the snooze button, if I do, then I am more at risk of falling back asleep because I am not normally the type to jump right out of bed. Therefore, especially during wintertime, I delay as long as possible because I want to stay in a warm cocoon … I notice that when I wake up later and jump out of bed immediately, I feel more alert but consciously more like I am not ready to start my day yet, whereas when I stall with the snooze button, I feel more tired and less cognitively alert.

Cool Job: I Code Easter Eggs & Games on Google Search

Every so often, when you search specific terms or topics on Google, you’ll find a delightfully surprising feature called an Easter egg. Search puppy,” for instance, and you can click the paw icon in the right-hand panel to see a puppy paw reach across your screen and hear an adorable bark sound. When you search “pi,” a calculator appears that’s actually a playable memory game. Or type “Wordle” in the search bar and watch the Google logo change to mimic the popular word game.

Emma Freeman is a Software Engineer on the team that comes up with and codes these entertaining and unexpected features, which are aptly named “delight” features. “If you search for something on Google and you see something you weren’t expecting, like a little animation or a surprise, that’s what my team does,” she says. Like the Google Doodle, many of these hidden features are ephemeral and tied to a topical pop culture moment or holiday.

As an engineer, Emma gets to help ideate and execute the timely features. For example, for Taylor Swift’s re-release of her album 1989 (Taylor’s Version), the team built a scavenger hunt word scramble puzzle that revealed the titles of the vault tracks on the album. After it launched, Emma scrolled social media for reactions, and saw tweets from Swifties who said they stayed up all night working on the puzzle. “People are so passionate about Taylor Swift, and it’s lovely to be able to reach people on that level,” Emma says.

The team built 89 hidden word puzzles in Google Search to celebrate Taylor Swift’s album 1989 (Taylor’s Version).

Another rewarding and memorable project: When the Scooby-Doo character Velma was first portrayed as a lesbian in the cartoon series, Emma’s team added celebratory lesbian Pride confetti on Google Search queries for the character. “The response that we got made me feel like I was doing something very meaningful for people,” Emma says. “It’s such a small and kind of particular role, but you have a lot of impact weighing in on all these cultural conversations from a really public setting.” Here’s how Emma launched this cool career in tech, what it’s like to work at Google, and her advice for landing a similar role.

What got me interested in the job

“I went to Wesleyan University for undergrad, and that was the first time I ever wrote code. I studied computer science and I double-majored in art. I was really focusing on digital art and how to code creatively to make animations, art, and games with code.

A lot of what we learned [in college] was theory and logic, like how code works and how computers work, but it wasn’t a lot of technical hard skills. The computer science major at Wesleyan is explicitly not trying to teach you to go into the industry, it definitely prepares you more for an academic side of things. I actually ended up coding a lot more in my art classes.

I only had one relevant summer job with Girls Who Code’s summer immersion program, which I completely loved. I had a lot of work experience in retail and service, but I’ve never had any software engineering jobs or internships. I kind of tried to find any area where I could write code for a job and took on as many side projects as I could. I worked in my school’s digital lab, which was working a lot with 3D printers and art related technology, but not explicitly coding. I worked for my school’s library doing some web archival work.”

How I got in the door

“I’ve never met anyone who had less experience than I did coming into this career. I applied online for a new grad position called the Engineering Residency program, which is now deprecated. It was a one-year fellowship for people with less of a technical background. So that was the route that allowed me to get into Google. Without that, it would have been much harder for me to find a path there.

I knew that I didn’t have a lot of technical background, so I found myself very, very stressed out with trying to become this perfect technical student in a very short amount of time. I was like, I don’t have any experience, but I need the experience. I almost felt like I’d run out of time without having internships.

Don’t be afraid to be a non-traditional candidate. Oftentimes it can really be a strength.

Software Engineer at Google

Technical interviews are notoriously intimidating, and I had all that standard advice of reading Cracking the Coding Interview, and all that. I found Cracking the Coding Interview to be one of the most depressing books I’ve ever read. I did a bunch of LeetCode questions to try and span a breadth of topics. I knew I was not going to have perfect technical answers to every question, but I know what I am good at, which is answering questions in job interview settings, communication, and asking the right questions.

I kept coming back to the question: If I’m in an interview setting where I don’t know an answer, what can I do? Things like asking the interviewer questions, or saying things like, ‘I think this question can be solved in n^2 time, but I’m not sure if it can actually be solved in linear time,’ to try and make the interview more of a conversation. Because of those skills, I was able to get to a point where I could get a decent answer on paper. Bad interviews happen and you’ve just got to be okay with it. That mindset made the process a lot more bearable.”

What I actually do all day

“There are days where I have a stand-up meeting and then am coding all day. I work a lot in TypeScript and a fair amount in Java and just your standard HTML/CSS. Occasionally, I’ll use some C++. I typically fall more on the front-end side of things, but I end up doing some back-end things as well.

Often, I’m touching base with someone about an ongoing project, whether that’s just like a doc review or a quick meeting. We do a lot of brainstorming and feature planning meetings where we give input into the design and the UX. That’s not typically something that I would expect to be involved in as an engineer. Getting to have exposure into that makes my work feel a lot more personal, and not like I’m just implementing something that was handed off to me.

I also spend a good amount of time trying to scour the internet for what people care about that week. If there’s a good opportunity for an Easter egg, then I’m trying to come up with something that we can launch quickly and well.

A lot of the times we’re building features for holidays or movies, so there’s a lot of personal emotion and meaning that goes into the work that is very key to the success. All of my coworkers are very attuned to that. I find myself so thrown into my features that I’m thinking about them all the time — but that’s because I think it’s interesting.”

Here’s what you need to get started

Emma’s biggest piece of advice for folks who are searching for jobs in tech is to embrace whatever your individual strengths are instead of trying to shoehorn yourself into your idea of a model developer. “Don’t be afraid to be a non-traditional candidate,” Emma says. “Oftentimes it can really be a strength.”

It’s also great if your individual strengths are unrelated to technical skills: “My particular soft skills have undeniably made me an asset on my team,” Emma says. (Want to work on your soft skills? Here are ways to practice and improve soft skills like problem solving and planning.)

Lastly, don’t limit yourself to only going after jobs in the tech industry, because there are lots of other sectors that need to hire people with technical skills. “Keep an open mind,” Emma says. “You can always have side projects that are more aligned with your interests until you find something that you want to do full time.”

Why I chose to learn to code

“I started my tech journey from class 11 or 12. I started learning HTML and CSS basics, because at that time it was on my course. Just before joining college, I did a Microsoft certification in Python.

I did my bachelor’s in technology in the field of computer science from Vellore Institute of Technology. Like everyone, I started learning the basic languages my first year in my college from C++, then Java, then Python. In my second year the Covid pandemic came, and we started doing our classes in the online mode.”

How I learned with Codecademy

“I joined Codecademy and there I started learning more about Java, HTML and CSS, and JavaScript. Earlier I used to [build] only the basic pages but Codecademy really helped me learn how to make responsive pages and how a program runs. If someone doesn’t know Java, C++, or anything in any programming language, I most definitely suggest Codecademy as the place where you can at least learn your basics.

There was a Codecademy club in our college, with around 200-250 people, and one of my friends was an ambassador. I joined that club and I started teaching my juniors about web development and Java. We used Codecademy as a teaching platform, so I taught students JavaScript entirely from Codecademy only. Codecademy’s learning platform is just like a playground where you can play with the languages. So, it won’t feel stressful learning a programming language, it just is like you are playing with the code.”

How I got in the door

“I did three or four internships between my second and third year of college. After teaching so many students in the Codecademy club, I got confidence in teaching. The first internship I did was in as an Assistant Professor or teacher at a startup. Then I moved to Software Developer Intern.

From my campus placements only, I started my journey at IBM. I had a Software Developer internship [and now I am a] full-time Software Developer. Currently I am working at IBM as a Software Developer, and I am building chatbots powered by AI. My focus is currently now on full stack in the field of AI and machine learning.”

How long it took me to land a job

“In my fourth year [of college] I stopped internships, because that’s when the [campus job] placements started coming. I just focused on my development side.”

How I nailed the interview

“I had a Codecademy account and I bought a premium of their Java course. I just prepared their coding questions and practiced some questions on HackerRank and LeetCode.”

How day one and beyond went

“I was so happy to join IBM. Two days before [I started work] I came for the first time to Bangalore from my hometown Lucknow. In Bangalore the weather is always especially [nice] and I went to few restaurants.

Our first day was very special. On the first day of work, we got to cut a cake because like almost 20-30 people were joining at the same time. We got goodies and we got to know more about IBM. After that, we got our laptops, we met our team, and then at the end of the day we played games.”

What I wish I knew before I started learning

“Focus on two things: One is the programming language; choose any programming language and prepare data structures and algorithms in it. Another side you should pick up is some development, which can be web development, Android app development, or data science. At the same time, you should be aware about the new technologies which are coming into the market.

If you are writing a single line of code, first learn how it is working in the back end, how machine level code is converted to the binary code, and then how our systems are processing it. If you know about that, then you will get more interested towards coding.”

Spaced Practice and Working Memory

If you need another reason to love spaced practice, Ouhao Chen and colleagues (1) provide yet another one. They conducted two experiments to investigate the relationship between spaced practice and working memory depletion. First, I’ll provide a primer on working memory and resource depletion, and then I’ll describe the experiments and results.

Working memory is the cognitive system that we use to hold information in our minds while we are consciously using it. For example, as you are reading this blog post, you are holding onto the words as you are reading in order to make sense of them. When you solve algebra problems, you hold onto the components of the problem and actively update the values as you complete various operations.

There are a few features of our working memory system that are important here. First, working memory has limited cognitive resources; you can only hold on to, or “work with”, so much information at once. You can, however, retrieve information from long-term memory into your working memory to use, and long-term memory has no known limit on its capacity. So, once you learn something well, you can retrieve it and use it without really taking up too many of your working memory resources.

Second, complex tasks that have a lot of elemental interactivity, or elements that need to be processed simultaneously, place a greater demand on our working memory. Chen and colleagues (1) provide a nice pair of examples of this in their paper. Learning to solve complex mathematical equations has high elemental interactivity. All the symbols within the problem need to be processed together to understand the problem as a whole, and if you are still learning how these symbols operate, then the task has a higher working memory load. Learning new vocabulary tends to have a lower working memory load. Even though the vocabulary terms are all new and the task may be difficult, they can be processed one at a time, and so the demand on working memory resources is lower.

We have limited cognitive resources, and if a task requires that we use a lot of those resources, then resource depletion can occur. What does this have to do with massing or spacing practice? With massed practice (cramming), engagement with the material is more continuous than when we space practice over time. With continuous cramming, working memory resources may end up depleting, which could result in less learning as we push through the cramming session. Chen and colleagues (1) tested this hypothesis with primary school children in their authentic classrooms.

Experiment 1

In their first experiment, ten-year-old primary school students (Year 4) in China learned how to add two positive fractions with different denominators (a new area for these students). They participated as part of their classes, so randomization was not possible. One class participated in the massed condition and the other in the spaced condition. (A quasi-experimental design; this is not as strong a design as a true randomized experiment. Experiment 2 addressed this problem.)

During the learning phase, students in the massed condition practiced solving all the problems in one sitting during class. Immediately after the learning phase, they took a working memory test and then a post-test to measure learning of the math operations. Students in the spaced condition practiced the same problems as those in the massed condition, but they were spread out across three learning days. Then, on a fourth day, the students in the spaced condition completed the same working memory test and the same post-test to measure learning.

The students in the spaced condition had higher performance on the working memory test and the post-test compared to those in the massed condition. The results showed a spacing effect (spacing led to greater learning than massing) and provided support for their hypothesis that massed practice leads to working memory depletion.

Experiment 2

In the second experiment, primary school students (Year 5) learned two discrete areas of algebra. The students learned problems in one area during week 1, and the other during week 2. This was done so that the researchers could counterbalance the learning materials and experimental conditions in a within-subjects design, resulting in more confidence that any differences between conditions is due to the manipulated variable (see this post on research methods). The overall procedure was largely the same as in Experiment 1, but one group of students learned using massed practice during week 1 and spaced practice during week 2, while the other group learned using spaced practice during week 1 and massed practice during week 2.

The results from Experiment 2 supported the results from Experiment 1. Working memory performance was higher for students in the spaced condition than students in the massed condition, indicating that massed practice led to more working memory depletion. Students in the spaced condition also showed greater performance on the post-test than students in the massed condition. The students in this experiment were also asked how difficult they thought the working memory test was. When students were in the massed condition during week 1 and the spaced condition during week 2, the working memory test felt a lot easier during the second week (after spaced practice). When students were in the spaced condition during week 1 and the massed condition during week 2, the working memory test felt a lot harder during the second week (after massed practice).

Summary

Overall, these experiments show that spaced practice leads to greater learning than massed practice in a real classroom setting with primary school children, and show that working memory resources are more depleted after massed practice. Avoiding working memory depletion could be one reason why spaced practice is beneficial! When sitting down to engage in a spaced practice session, working memory resources are more likely to be fresh and ready to go. These experiments also provide objective empirical evidence for what many of us have probably experienced: cramming for long periods of time can feel really draining.

Growing up, I was very close to my grandmother. I’ve always admired the wisdom and humor of my elders, and she instilled in me a profound appreciation for their company. Unlike the prevalent notion that aging is negative, my perspective on growing old — very old — was different.

When I emigrated to Canada from Brazil in 2010, I was no longer in regular contact with the seniors I loved so much. Soon after, I decided to make a documentary exploring aging and the experiences of women. A friend of mine, who used to teach fitness courses at a retirement home, introduced me to Madeleine. It was love at first sight. I cannot explain how we could feel so close to each other despite our substantial differences in age and backgrounds.

When I met her in March 2017, she was 102 years old. She was in good health and completely autonomous, but she refused to leave the house. She had decided, at the age of 100, that she would stay in the house and save her energy for her daily activities. She would tell me, “You cannot understand, not because you are not intelligent, but because you are simply not old enough to understand.”

Even as we became closer friends, her determination to remain indoors and live solely in the present didn’t waver. We frequently discussed going on a road trip, so I decided to bring her out in the only way I could: through animation. This short documentary was completed when Madeleine was 107 years old, and I consider myself very fortunate to have known her.

Have you ever been fooled by the bluster and hype of a fake or misleading online review?

The internet has democratized the ability to review. No longer do we have to wait for a select group of experts to give its stamp of approval. Instead, anybody can write what he or she thinks online. But who exactly is writing the reviews we read? How reliable are they?

After Dr. Mark J. Mohrmann completed a successful orthopedic procedure in 2019, his patient turned to Yelp, the review website, to share his appreciation.

“Dr. Mark made me feel that I was in safe hands,” the patient wrote in a five-star review.

Only the writer was not an actual patient, and there was no procedure. His review was fake — part of an effort to boost the online ratings for Dr. Mohrmann’s business using phony positive reviews, according to an analysis by Fake Review Watch, an industry watchdog. Last month, Dr. Mohrmann agreed to pay a $100,000 penalty to settle with New York’s attorney general on charges of deceiving the public with fake reviews.

The fake review for Dr. Mohrmann is just one example of the billion-dollar fake review industry, where people and businesses pay marketers to post fake positive reviews to Google Maps, Amazon, Yelp and other platforms, and deceive millions of customers each year.

Fake reviews are as old as the internet itself, and they are illegal and banned by online platforms. But fake review businesses have continued to blossom anyway.

Now, for the first time, a wave of regulation and moves by tech companies are coalescing in a more concerted effort to turn the tide.

This summer, the Federal Trade Commission proposed a sweeping rule that would punish businesses for buying or selling fake reviews, among other restrictions. In October, several online platforms, including Amazon and Expedia, announced a coalition that would share information and resources among companies to combat review fraud. And late last month, New York’s attorney general, Letitia James, issued her own warning across the state, saying in a statement that fake reviews were “illegal and unacceptable.”

Experts warned, however, that the fake review problem may be so enormous that it is insurmountable, and note that fake reviewers survived previous crackdowns.
