Film Club: ‘Oasis’

Oasis,” a 13-minute Op-Doc video, is a subtle but powerful film about the bonds between twin brothers — one with developmental disabilities — as they come of age. At the dawn of their teenage years, the connection between the twins Raphaël and Rémi begins to weaken. But for one last summer, perhaps, time seems to stand still.

Do you see your sibling relationships in theirs? What can we learn about growing up from the two boys — the power of familial bonds and the need for independence?

Students

When I was younger, I used to babysit the twin brothers Raphaël and Rémi. They were inseparable best friends, but as the years passed I noticed that a distance was slowly starting to form between them. As they entered their teenage years, Rémi was feeling guilty about growing up “faster” than his brother, who has developmental disabilities. Raphaël struggled to follow Rémi and adapt to this new reality.

Witnessing this changing dynamic, I wanted to capture the essence of their relationship as it was, before life pulls them in different directions. In this short documentary, the brothers spend the summer swimming and playing together, echoing the togetherness of their childhood. In small moments, however, we see how Rémi is pulling away, and we sense that this might be the last summer of their shared memories. As a director, I was inspired by how the subtle changes in their relationship expose the fine line between childhood and adulthood.

3 Ways to Get a Hiring Manager’s Attention Without a Degree

Our recent UX hiring manager study found that people hiring for entry-level roles see degrees and certificates as “a positive signal, but not a deciding factor” for candidates. So what does that mean for folks without degrees from traditional four-year institutions? How do you tailor your job search, optimize your resume, and build your network without a formal degree? 

To get some tips, I chatted to Louise Ogilvy, founder of the recruitment agency Develocity. Her agency specializes in hiring for roles at developer tools companies, so she’s worked with hiring managers from across the industry (including software engineering, UX, and developer relations).

Research companies before you apply 

The obvious place to start is by limiting your search to companies that prioritize skills-based hiring. That way you aren’t doing things on hard mode! “Job adverts quite often will specify whether a degree is preferred or essential,” Louise says. “There are some great AI search tools that can match you to jobs based on your background and preferences.” (Talentprise, for example). So you can try to narrow your focus to companies without strict education requirements. (While you’re at it, check out some other ways you can use AI to streamline your job search.)

Learn something new for free

Of course, you can’t know how those companies are weighing skills vs degrees in practice. While unfortunately there isn’t a single source of truth for which companies are more open to candidates without a traditional degree, you can narrow down the list yourself before you submit your application. 

“If there’s a company you’d like to work for, view the list of their employees on their LinkedIn page and have a look at the employees’ profiles,” Louise says. “Does everybody there have a degree? Or, if there’s a real mix, that tells you the company is probably a little bit more open-minded.” Pro tip: As you’re browsing people at a company on LinkedIn, you can also search “Codecademy” in the schools section to see how many team members also learned with Codecademy.

Make LinkedIn your super power

Louise is especially passionate about the power of LinkedIn as a networking and job search platform, so her number one piece of advice is to make sure you set up a profile there. Your LinkedIn profile should mirror your paper or PDF resume, says Louise. If you don’t have a formal education or relevant work experience, you are probably wondering what on earth you put there instead.

Craft a skills-based profile

What does having a degree signify to hiring managers and recruiters? Often it’s not actually about the subjects you studied, but showing your skills, motivation, and commitment. So how can you replicate that with your own profile?

“Think back to your previous roles,” Louise says. “What are some of the same skills that you developed and put to use? If you’re looking for a software engineering job, can you think of examples from a previous role where you really had to pay attention to detail?” These are all examples of transferable attributes and skills that will serve you well in a tech role. Even if you’ve never had a job, there might be skills and experience from extracurricular activities and clubs you’ve participated in that you can highlight. Don’t assume that a hiring manager or recruiter will pick up on these — make it easy for them to see why you’re a good fit for their role.

“LinkedIn can be your personal sales tool to highlight projects that you’ve done,” Louise says. “Use the Featured section on your profile to draw attention to side projects or an app you might have created as part of your studies.” Don’t have anything to share? Grow your network

Now you’ve built out your LinkedIn profile, it’s time to make the right connections. Luckily, you don’t need to go to college or a coding bootcamp to build a solid network. 

“There are some fantastic groups you can join on LinkedIn around early stage careers, in just about every industry you might be interested in,” Louise says. These groups can be helpful for sharing advice and growing your peer network. You can also take a more targeted approach: “If there’s a company you particularly want to work for, find a couple of people who work there, send them a connection request and say, ‘Hey, I’m new to [your industry], and I’m trying to build up my network,’” Louise says. “Human beings have an innate desire to help other people. Particularly as they advance in their careers, you do find a lot of people are very willing to support others who are just getting started.” Feel awkward cold messaging folks? Open-source contributions can help show your dedication and commitment to follow through from the course you’ve completed,” Louise says. There are a lot of companies that actively build their products on top of open-source software or even run open-source projects, in which case, that experience will actually be far more relevant than a computer science degree. Those hiring managers are almost certain to check out your GitHub profile to see how you engage with the open-source community. The maintainers and contributors you collaborate with are likely to work for the kinds of companies you’re interested in, so becoming a regular contributor is a great way to build your network. 

Code contributions aren’t the only way to get involved either — contributing to Docs can showcase your commitment and interest, and give you valuable experience with Git and GitHub. October is a great time to get started with open source because it’s Hacktoberfest, the tech world’s month-long celebration of open-source software. Beginners are encouraged to participate in open-source projects during this time.

What Is a Kernel?

A kernel is the central or essential part of a computer’s operating system. It’s the main layer between the software running on your computer and its hardware. Ahead, we’ll explain what a kernel is, the various types of kernels, and what they do in an operating system.

Where the kernel fits in an operating system

You can break most operating systems into these three layers:

  • Hardware. This comprises the physical parts of a computer, including its RAM, CPU, and input/output devices like hard drives, network devices, and graphic cards. The CPU performs the computations for the computer and reads and writes memory.
  • Kernel. The kernel is the core of the operating system. It is software that stays in memory and it sends instructions to the CPU and other hardware.
  • User Processes. User processes (or just “processes”) are the running applications in the computer. Another of the kernel’s jobs is to manage these processes and allow them to communicate with each other.

Kernel mode vs. user mode

Kernel mode and user mode are the two ways a computer’s CPU can execute code. When code is run in kernel mode, it has unlimited access to all the hardware on the computer. User mode restricts this access to the CPU. The computer’s memory is also separated this way and divided into user space and kernel space.

Because of this separation, when a process fails while running in user mode, the damage it can inflict on the system is minimal, and the kernel can recover the process. A process that runs in kernel mode, on the other hand, can crash the computer. This separation of user and kernel processes is a safeguard that keeps the system running and stable even if a user process fails.

What is kernel panic?

Errors and crashes can still happen on a computer system, even with this separation between user and kernel processes. Since the kernel has complete control over the system, a crash in a kernel process will bring down the entire system. A kernel panic is a safety measure that an operating system takes when it detects a crash or if continuing to run could cause data loss or hardware damage.

Kernel panics are usually caused by communication issues between devices and hardware. To recover a system in kernel panic, it must be rebooted.

The term “kernel panic” is used in Unix, Linux, Mac OS X, and other Unix-like systems. On the Microsoft Windows operating system, the same type of event is called a “stop error,” but it’s more commonly called the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).

What are the functions of a kernel?

The kernel performs many jobs in a computer system. Its main responsibilities include:

  • Resource management: The kernel allocates a computer’s resources between the various applications running on it and also controls communication between processes.
  • Memory management: The kernel has complete control of a computer’s memory or RAM. Every computer process requires some memory, and the kernel uses virtual addressing to allocate memory to running processes. Virtual addressing segments the memory and keeps the memory used by each process from overlapping the memory used by other processes.
  • Device management: The kernel keeps a list of available devices connected to the system and communicates with these devices using their drivers. Device drivers are computer applications that run in kernel mode and allow the OS to communicate with devices like mice, keyboards, and monitors. The kernel manages all communications between user processes and these devices via these drivers.

Types of kernel

While the features of kernels are similar, the designs of specific kernels can vary widely depending on what they are used for. Kernels come in five main types.

Monolithic kernel

In a monolithic kernel, there’s no separation between user mode and kernel mode. Both user processes and kernel processes use the same memory space and run in the same thread.

Most of the work in a monolithic kernel is done with direct system calls. This gives applications quick access to hardware and resources and can increase the performance of user processes. Monolithic kernels are also smaller applications and take up less memory since they don’t have to handle both user and kernel modes.

But, monolithic kernels also have a few drawbacks. If a process crashes, it can bring down the whole system since it doesn’t have the safeguards of a separate kernel mode. Also, to add new services to the operating system, the operating system has to be modified and rebooted.

AIX, HP-UX, Linux, Unix, and Solaris all use monolithic kernels.

Micro kernel

In a micro kernel, the user processes are executed in the user space, and system processes are executed in the kernel space. Processes in the user space can make calls to various operating system services to obtain access to system resources like RAM. Other services like networking run as programs in the userspace.

Micro kernels are easier to maintain than monolithic kernels, but the number of system calls and message passing will come with more overhead and make the system slower. Still, micro kernels can recover when user processes crash, and new software can be tested on them without having to reboot the system.

Mach, L4, AmigaOS, Minix, and K42 all use micro kernels.

Hybrid kernel

Hybrid kernels are also known as modular kernels and combine the features of both monolithic and micro kernels. They’re used in most commercial operating systems, and they extend the functionality of micro kernels with additional code in kernel space to increase performance.

Windows, Netware, and BeOS all use hybrid kernels.

Nano kernel

A nano kernel is extremely small and only provides direct access to hardware and resources. To save memory space and increase performance, nano kernels delegate all services to device drivers and don’t have any system services. The Mac OS operating system used a nano kernel in its Power PC days for versions 7 through 9 before the OS X versions.

Exo kernel

Exo kernels are an experimental kernel design being developed at MIT. In this kernel, the management of resources is separated from their protection. This allows the kernel to be customized for specific applications. They provide no abstractions on top of the hardware they interact with, which allows developers to decide how to allocate resources to applications running on the system.

Exo kernels are also really small but provide developers with a library operating system that has all the functionality of a traditional operating system. This means that users of an exo kernel must build the rest of the operating system from scratch, which can be complex and comes with a lot of risks. This is a major reason why exo kernels have not become mainstream.

Teachers teach all other professions. This is why teaching is considered by many people as the noblest of all professions. Teaching moulds the minds of the next generation, shaping minds, nurturing potential, and inspiring students to leave the classroom with confidence and a passion for learning. While the perception of teaching differs from person to person, what everyone agrees on is that educators play a vital role in moulding the next generation. In this article, we’ll delve into why teaching is considered a noble profession and why teachers deserve our utmost respect and admiration.

What Makes a Great Teacher?

Teachers are educators, mentors, and instructors. Many of us recall our favourite teacher, one who went above and beyond, who impacted their life in and outside the classroom and left a mark through their devotion, hard work, and energy. Teaching is a skill that goes beyond being an expert in a subject. There are a lot of qualities that make a great teacher.

  • Passionate: A great teacher is passionate about their subject. They enjoy teaching and learning about the subject and imparting this knowledge to their students. Their passion ignites a curiosity about the subject in the students.
  • Inspiring: Teachers possess the ability to inspire, motivate, and instil a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom. Students are motivated to put time and effort into their studies and excel.
  • Empathetic: Understanding each student’s learning styles, challenges, and feelings lies at the core of their interactions. Being empathetic allows teachers to connect with students personally, by recognising their special needs, and providing tailored support.
  • Patient: Great teachers are patient, adaptable, and resilient in the face of challenges. They look for creative and innovative ways to engage their students and keep them interested, walking together with them on their journey.
  • Open: Teachers are intentional about creating a positive and inclusive learning environment where all students feel seen, heard, respected, challenged, and supported and every student has a chance to succeed.
  • Lifelong learners: Teachers don’t just impart knowledge to their students. They are lifelong learners themselves, continuously improving their knowledge, improving their skills, conducting educational research, technology, and teaching methodologies, and staying up to date with educational advancements.

Ultimately, what makes a great teacher is their enduring impact. Great teachers leave an indelible mark on the lives of their students, shaping them into responsible, compassionate, and empowered individuals.

What Makes Teaching a Noble Profession

Teachers shape the minds of a country’s future leaders, industry movers and shakers, entrepreneurs, innovators, and responsible citizens of society. Every subject taught, every lesson shared, and every piece of wisdom passed on contributes to the collective knowledge of the next generation. A teacher’s influence extends beyond the classroom, as the values and skills they instill in their students ripple through each generation, ultimately, shaping a nation.

Foster Personal Growth

Teaching is also about personal development. Teachers provide a safe and nurturing environment where students can learn, make mistakes, and grow as individuals. They are role models, and guide students in navigating the complexities and challenges of life, both academic and personal, teaching them essential life skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication.

Promote Equality

Teachers have the power to bridge gaps and promote equality in society. They ensure that each student, regardless of their background or circumstances, has access to education. They are committed to their students and their commitment to ensuring all students have the tools and resources that help break down societal barriers. In doing so, teachers advocate for the rights and opportunities of all students, regardless of their race, socioeconomic status, or abilities.

Build Character

Beyond academics, teachers instil values and character in their students. They teach empathy, tolerance, and respect for others, helping to create a generation of compassionate individuals who can contribute positively to their communities. These lessons are often valuable, and some consider them more valuable than the academic knowledge they impart. They mould students into responsible and ethical citizens who value integrity and contribute to the betterment of society.

Leave a Lifelong Impact

The impact of a teacher often lasts a lifetime. Many successful individuals attribute their accomplishments to the guidance and inspiration they received from their educators. A single teacher can spark a passion for a subject, inspire a career choice, or instil a lifelong love for learning. Resilient

Teaching is not without its challenges. Educators must adapt to changing curricula, teaching methods, and the diverse needs of their students. In many countries, they face budget cuts, pressure, scepticism about the value of education, pay disputes, and more. Yet, they push through it all, displaying remarkable resilience and dedication to their profession and the students whose lives they touch.

Inspire Others

Teachers inspire not only their students but also future generations of educators. Many teachers are inspired by the mentors who shaped their own lives and in turn want to pass this legacy to the next crop of teachers. They often become mentors to new teachers, creating a cycle of inspiration and knowledge sharing. This is invaluable because it ensures that the torch of knowledge and inspiration continues to be passed on from one generation of educators to the next.

It’s essential that we recognise and honour the vital role teachers play in our society and provide them with the support and respect they deserve. Rule 17: Omit needless words. — “The Elements of Style,” William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White

Of all the commandments contained in “The Elements of Style,” the ubiquitous writing guide by Cornell professor William Strunk Jr. and his former student, and author, E.B. White, Rule 17, “Omit needless words,” has proved to be the most pertinent in my writing classrooms.

When I was new to teaching writing to young adults and teenagers, I theorized that social media, texting and even our shortened attention spans meant that I should be ready for terse correspondences, malnourished prose and final assignments that just barely made the required word count.

I was way off.

Indeed, my experience teaching nonfiction writing to undergraduates and high school students has taught me that today’s nascent writers hand in assignments just as full of redundancies, unnecessary prepositions and fluff as those Cornell students presented to Strunk over a century ago.

In this lesson, students will learn the importance of concise, clear writing as well as techniques for spotting and omitting those pesky “needless” words.

Educators will need a whiteboard or whiteboard app such as Web Whiteboard or Whiteboard.fi to share definitions, examples and student responses.

Wordy sentences are sentences that contain more words than they require to clearly communicate a point or idea.

When teachers write “wordy,” “bloated” or “verbose” in the margins of a paper, they aren’t saying that a sentence is too long, nor that its structure is too complicated. Rather, they are stating that “needless” words are hindering the clear communication of the students’ ideas.

If you haven’t used “The Elements of Style” in your classroom, give students a synopsis of the book’s history (“‘The Elements of Style’ Turns 50” by Sam Roberts is a great resource for this) before sharing and explaining the dictum to “Omit needless words.”

Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts. This requires not that the writer make all sentences short, or avoid all detail and treat subjects only in outline, but that every word tell. — “The Elements of Style,” William Strunk, Jr. and E.B. Divide your class into small groups of three to five students. Ask each group to carefully read the above quotation before answering the questions below.

  • What does it mean to “omit needless words”?

  • What does it mean “that every word tell”?

  • Why is wordy writing problematic?

  • What are tactics you can use to spot wordy writing?

  • Can wordiness ever be a good thing?

Invite a member from each small group to record students’ responses on the classroom whiteboard or online whiteboard app. Bring the class together to discuss what the groups have shared.

If students did not come up with the following thoughts on their own, educators will want to add them to the whiteboard during discussion.

Wordiness is problematic because …

  • it can hinder the clear communication of ideas.

  • it can lead to readers losing interest.

  • it can make the text sound as though the writer is adding more words merely to meet a page or word-count quota.

This exercise helps students identify wordiness in their own writing by asking them (in small groups) to make a Times article wordy, then challenge their peers to edit the piece back to clarity and concision.

Have each group select a recent New York Times article to make verbose.

If students have a Times subscription, they can choose their own articles. Encourage them to focus on headlines that seem to promise light subject matter (the Style section is a great place to start). Overall, your goal during this step is to avoid trivializing breaking news stories.

Here are some examples of articles that would work well:

On the Coney Island Boardwalk, It’s the Summer of Snakes (and a Wallaby)
Are You Ready? The Nu Metal Renaissance Is Upon Us.
A Long, Shining River of Verse, Flowing From a Rower and Writer

And if you’re looking for short, but engaging, articles students can get through quickly, have them choose a Tiny Love Story from the Modern Love column or this handy teaching resource. Are your students taking part in this year’s 100-Word Personal Narrative Contest? Ask them to select a work from among the 2022 contest winners.

Once groups have chosen a piece, each member should read it carefully before discussing the following questions:

  • What’s the article about?

  • How would you describe the article’s style?

  • Are there any places where the author uses more words than necessary?

Once students have discussed their piece, take some time to go over common wordiness culprits. Come armed with plenty of examples, including some from students’ own work (be sure to redact anything that might identify the writer, or ask students beforehand for permission to use their work).

Here is a starter list of common wordy phrases that educators can share with their students and expand upon.

  • Redundancies

    Repetitive expressions decorate our conversations so seamlessly that it’s no wonder phrases like “8 a.m. in the morning,” “join together,” “close proximity” and “A.T.M. machine” find their ways into student papers.

  • Needless or unintentional repetition

    When repetition is used deliberately it can be a powerful communication tool, adding cadence to speeches, emphasis to ideas and poetic pauses that force readers to slow their pace. However, when students repeat ideas, words or phrases unthinkingly, repetition becomes a wordiness issue, leading to tangled sentences and confused or annoyed readers.

    Sometimes bad repetition is obvious:

    I have been playing soccer most of my life and it has played a significant role throughout my life.

    The feeling I felt after the competition will stay with me forever.

    Other times, identifying it requires students to slow down and think about the words they’ve chosen and their meaning:

    I volunteered to coach illiterate adults who did not know how to read.

  • Lazy verbs

    Strive to use active instead of passive verbs: I wrote the paper is easier to read than The paper was written by me.

    Whenever possible, avoid using “to be” as your main verb: My sister is quick to reply to my texts, versus My sister replies to my texts promptly.

    Watch out for nominalization (converting parts of speech such as verbs and adjectives into nouns) as it leads to clunky writing. For example, Margot made a distortion of the story, which made her plot difficult to follow, is three words longer than Margot distorted the story, which made her plot difficult to follow.

  • Preposition overload

    Look for places where excessive prepositional phrases have caused bloat:

    Students will understand the reason for the assignments being due exactly on the first of April once the latest version of the rubric for the assignment has been dispersed among all students.

    Often, prepositions can be eliminated without changing a sentence’s meaning.

  • Add-nothing adjectives and adverbs

    Adjectives and adverbs add nothing to a sentence when they’re redundant, nonsensical or simply not needed.

    For example, the first of the following two sentences contains an unnecessary modifier, which the second version eliminates: Flynn yelled loudly for help after he saw the two cars collide, versus Flynn yelled for help after he saw the two cars collide.

    No matter what the rules are, what matters is getting rid of words and phrases that are only taking up space. If they add nothing, they’ve got to go.

Now the fun begins.

Have students take the articles they’ve chosen and make them more wordy by replacing terms or phrases, adding modifiers, pumping up the prepositions, and doing whatever else they can do to increase sentences’ word counts without changing their meanings.

For example, from the article “On the Coney Island Boardwalk, It’s the Summer of Snakes (and a Wallaby),” I took this delightful sentence:

The variety of wildlife available for photographs at Coney Island made headlines this month when a young man’s pet wallaby, that kangaroo-adjacent animal native to Australia, was seized on the boardwalk by the police. (34 words)

And made it into a barely readable behemoth:

The variety of different wildlife animals made available for photographs at Coney Island made attention-grabbing and interesting headlines this present month when a young man in his early 20s had his pet wallaby, that kangaroo-adjacent animal that comes from the country of Australia, seized and taken by police who were assigned to patrol Coney Island and who were on the boardwalk at the time the wallaby was spotted. (68 words)

Have students put away their selected articles before asking groups to exchange the bloated sentences they’ve created with one another. Challenge student groups to revise their classmates’ wordy sentences until they’re clear and concise.

Ask students to compare their revised sentences to their counterparts in the published articles.

Did students’ reworked versions come close to the original writing?

Did students’ versions fail to catch any needless words or phrases?

Do any of their sentences improve upon the original work?

I’ll leave you with a final thought: Can wordiness sometimes work? Sure, but as I tell my students many times a semester: You must know the rules before you can knowingly break them.

Would You Ever Want to Live on the Moon or Mars?

Can you envision yourself living on the moon or somewhere else beyond Earth? If so, why? What is compelling about traveling to other worlds in space?

In “Maybe in Your Lifetime, People Will Live on the Moon and Then Mars,” Debra Kamin writes about NASA’s plans to build houses on the moon by 2040:

The moon is a magnet, and it is pulling us back.

Half a century ago, the astronauts of Apollo 17 spent three days on that pockmarked orb, whose gravitational pull tugs not just on our oceans but our imaginations. For 75 hours, the astronauts moonwalked in their spacesuits and rode in a lunar rover, with humanity watching on television sets 240,000 miles away. The Apollo program was shuttered after they splashed back down to the Pacific Ocean in December 1972, and since then, the moon has hung, uncharted and empty, a siren in the sky.

NASA is now plotting a return. This time around, the stay will be long-term. To make it happen, NASA is going to build houses on the moon — ones that can be used not just by astronauts but ordinary civilians as well. It believes that by 2040, Americans will have their first subdivision in space. Living on Mars isn’t far behind. Some in the scientific community say NASA’s timeline is overly ambitious, particularly before a proven success with a new lunar landing. But seven NASA scientists interviewed for this article all said that a 2040 goal for lunar structures is attainable if the agency can continue to hit its benchmarks.

The U.S. space agency will blast a 3-D printer up to the moon and then build structures, layer by additive layer, out of a specialized lunar concrete created from the rock chips, mineral fragments and dust that sits on the top layer of the moon’s cratered surface and billows in poisonous clouds whenever disturbed — a moonshot of a plan made possible through new technology and partnerships with universities and private companies.

“We’re at a pivotal moment, and in some ways it feels like a dream sequence,” said Niki Werkheiser, NASA’s director of technology maturation. “In other ways, it feels like it was inevitable that we would get here.”

The article continues:

Among the many obstacles of taking up residence on the moon is the dust — fine powder so abrasive it can cut like glass. It swirls in noxious plumes and is toxic when inhaled.

But four years ago, Raymond Clinton Jr., senior technical adviser of the science and technology office at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., pulled out a whiteboard to sketch the idea of houses, roads and landing pads. The dust is a problem, yes. But it could also be the solution.

If homes on Earth could be successfully 3-D printed from soil made from the minerals found here, he thought, homes on the moon could be printed from the soil up there, where temperatures can swing up to 600 degrees and a vicious combination of radiation and micrometeorites pose a risk to both buildings and bodies.

NASA is calling its return to the moon Artemis, named after the twin sister of Apollo. Last November, Artemis I, the first of five planned moon missions, blasted off from Kennedy Space Center with only robots on board, circled the moon and returned safely to Earth. Artemis II, which will carry four human crew members on a 10-day flight around the same path — including the first woman and the first Black person in history to make this trip — is scheduled for November 2024. That mission will be followed up one year later by Artemis III, when humans will land on the lunar surface. Two more crewed missions are planned before the end of the decade.

Dr. Clinton, 71, says he knows that average Americans may not be living on the moon during his lifetime, but for those just a few decades younger than him, it’s a real possibility.

Browse AI 

Browse AI is a data extraction and monitoring tool that you can use it to keep an eye on new job postings at the companies you want to work for. Just click the “Monitor Company Info on LinkedIn” function, paste the URLs to the company’s LinkedIn page, and set your preferences. The tool will check the page at your set intervals and send you an email when it detects changes. 

Resume.io 

Much of the initial hiring process is automated as hiring managers and recruiters use applicant tracking software to find candidates that best align with the job posting. That’s why pros recommend customizing your resume and cover letter for each application.

Google’s Interview Warmup AI provides interview questions created by industry experts and uses machine learning to evaluate your responses. Its algorithm parses your answers for field-specific terms and key talking points so you can go over them later and better tailor them to the role you’re applying for (if necessary). 

ChatGPT 

ChatGPT is one of the biggest AI tools on the market, and you can use it throughout much of your job search. Its text generation features can create optimized resumes and cover letters that you can tweak for different positions.

ChatGPT can even help you prepare for behavioral interviews by providing relevant, job-specific questions.
