The term parallel play usually refers to young children playing independently alongside one another. It informs how toddlers learn to interact with others, share and become social beings. And some believe it can be beneficial for adult relationships, too.

The word demeanor has appeared in 185 articles on NYTimes.com in the past year, including on March 12 in “How Ukrainian Paralympians Pushed Through Fear and Worry” by David Waldstein:

By day, athletes raced and trained. By night, they spent time on their phones, connecting with loved ones under attack in Ukraine. Most of the athletes said they could not sleep from the worry and fear, and when they showed up to race, the mental strain was visible on their faces, and in their subdued demeanor.

Still, on the first day of competition, Ukrainians set the tone by winning three gold medals in biathlon and seven medals in total, including a sweep of the men’s vision-impaired sprint. They barely celebrated.

Medal ceremonies became both somber and uplifting moments, as athletes and observers alike were overcome by emotion and admiration. It was difficult to imagine what the skiers, like the gold-medalist Oksana Shyshkova, were thinking as they received their medals underneath Ukraine’s blue and yellow flag, or how they managed to focus on racing.

Let us know below what questions you have. There are no limits to what you can ask, as long as it’s related to climate. Your question can be as broad as “What will happen if the planet keeps warming at its current pace” or as specific as “I’ve seen this word in the news and I don’t understand what it means.” And don’t be embarrassed to ask something you feel like you should already know — if you’re wondering, other people probably are, too.

Between now and Earth Day, April 22, we will answer as many questions as possible. Other questions may form the basis of future reporting, helping us decide what to dig into.

Lesson of the Day: ‘Why Do We Change the Clocks, Anyway?’

On Tuesday, the United States Senate passed legislation that would make daylight saving time permanent. If the bill is approved by the House and signed by President Biden, the change would go into effect in 2023.

Do you get annoyed by the twice-yearly time changes? Would you like to see them done away with? In this lesson, you will look at the history of daylight saving, question who benefits from changing our clocks twice a year and look at the possible consequences of the legislation. Then you will write a letter to your congressional representative supporting or opposing the legislation.

Twice a year in the United States the clocks change: On the second Sunday of March we spring forward an hour to daylight saving time. On the first Sunday of November, the clocks turn back an hour to standard time.

Take a few minutes to discuss the following questions with your classmates, or write about them on your own:

  • Have you noticed if you feel different after the time changes? How so? We recently turned our clocks forward an hour. Has it been harder for you to get up in the morning when it is darker outside? Did it take you long to adjust?

  • Do you prefer daylight saving time, when it is darker in the morning and lighter in the evening? Or standard time, when it is lighter in the morning and darker in the evening? Why?

  • What is your initial reaction to the idea that we may no longer need to change our clocks twice a year?

Read the article, then answer the following questions:

1. Who is credited with initiating daylight saving time, and what were the reasons for it?

2. What are the benefits of daylight saving now?

3. What are some reasons to end changing our clocks twice a year?

The Times reports:

WASHINGTON — After losing an hour of sleep over the weekend, members of the United States Senate returned to the Capitol this week a bit groggy and in a mood to put an end to all this frustrating clock-changing.

So on Tuesday, with almost no warning and no debate, the Senate unanimously passed legislation to do away with the biannual springing forward and falling back that most Americans have come to despise, in favor of making daylight saving time permanent. The bill’s fate in the House was not immediately clear, but if the legislation were to pass there and be signed by President Biden, it would take effect in November 2023.

Gloat – Product Review

Gloat – Product Review

Gloat is not a learning system; it is more of job opportunities and projects (jobs) within the company. It ties into skills for a better part, some mentoring and “learning,” which I’ll get to shortly. I wouldn’t place this solution as talent management because it relies heavily on the opportunities/projects angle.

Gloat is quite popular, and I can see why that is, from a modern form of recruitment tapped into skills perspective.

Due to its popularity, I had to do a deep dive myself; here is my analysis.

The system bills itself as a “talent marketplace,” which to me, says here are a bunch of people who are “talent” in one place, and you can select them for specific job opportunities/projects (think a project like working on a new ad campaign or developing a workflow process). So that is what I think of first.

The system is around your employees – specifically full-time (this was mentioned multiple times). Still, the keys to their success come in skills management, mentors, and especially career paths and tracks.

When you purchase Gloat, you receive the base system.

After that, you can purchase any additional modules (one, a couple, or all).

  • Talent Agility – “Two-sided (their term)” marketplace with the abiilty to add projects, job opportunities (internal) and mentors
  • Career Agility – I liked this one the best, especially the career pathways (I’ll cover shortly), and career tracks
  • Organizational Agillity – I will see more of this, in the next few days, especially the analytics part, but it is the skills console including skill comptency framework, A.I. (their term, in reality though for all sytems it is machine learning) job architecture, workforce insights and expanded reporting) – I will provide an update after seeing the whole module
  • And coming in the second half of this year, Hiring Agility – which opens up the opportunity for having external candidates, enter into the system – as part of the entire process. This made sense to me, because it was clear once I saw the approach and manner of the system, that it seemed a natural next move – which was confirmed by Gloat to be the case.

I wanted to provide some screenshots, especially around the career pathways, because it is very cool, but Gloat did not respond to my request. This leaves me to describe it based on my notes.

Starting off

Underwhelming in the base platform. The “Content” cards that you see with so many systems, in a grid design, seemed dated. Learning is a tag.

End-User Profile

There were some nice pieces in an end-user profile, including

  • Ability to upload your resume
  • Update your “Availability”
  • Testimonial from a manager – not just text, but also a short video – I loved that
  • Featured Skills
  • Profile Strength – Which identifies what items may be missing. This is more around your Profile and less around how strong you are as a candidate. Reminded me of LinkedIn’s profile, which uses a “strength” thing when saying you can add this or that to improve it.

After all that (which the system shows steps via a pathway – I liked that too), the end-user is now ready to do a bit of job matching based on their role of interest.

The ability to add your Linkedin profile was a huge WOW for me. I also liked that the system could output the number of opportunities tied to the job roles they are interested in (but found it a bit redundant since they can select a part initially). The bonus factor is that the end-user can see “Suggestions” of other job roles that they may not be aware of, but their skills align to it.

UI/UX

The system goes from modern and easy to use to easy to use but dated. The whole “My Development” screen is a perfect example. I hope a redo in UI is in the works, especially with the icons they use – I swear one looked like some cartoon character with a crown on its head in the box marked Skills.

When the end-user searches for job opportunities, skills, and other items – on another screen, the output is noted as “Suggestions,”

This is another screen that needs a major UI/UX overhaul.

The tags (which the admin can change but default as “Learning,” “Mentor,” and “Projects” ) are dated too. Learning is in Red, Project in Blue, and Mentor in green. There is a thumbs up or down option – and I’m glad to see a system offer the “thumbs down” piece.

Learning

The way Gloat works is that the system does not house any content – not your content, not a third-party, zip, nada. So the Learning courses/content has to sit elsewhere and then API – which assumes that you are buying Gloat and have an existing learning system already – regardless of type.

Duration is noted on the card, but honestly, how would they know? They are relying on a 3rd party publisher – I saw this with Linkedin Learning, Udemy, Coursera – three visible publishers in the platform, all are additional costs.

If you lack a learning system and lack any 3rd party publishers that can be API into Gloat, then the tag “Learning” will be meaningless in the “content” blocks that appear on the home screen for the end-user.

This tells me that Gloat is focused on the Mid Enterprise (10,000 end-users) and Large to Very Large Enterprise. I say this because of the presumption that everyone has a learning system, which is inaccurate.

The Cards

Every card will have the following, regardless of they are a project, mentor, or learning.

  • Title
  • Screen shot or video or whatever they – the client choose to use – exception being Learning where it f it comes form a 3rd party publisher it pulls a screen from the course main screen
  • More details
  • Thumbs up or down icons.
  • Save and/or share

Not sure why Learning is the only one where the icons are thumbs down or “Interested” with the thumbs up icon. That made zero sense to me.

Projects

  • Location of the project, which can be a job opportunity or a “project” which are used interchangebly throughout the system – and yet messaged that they are diffreent – which I agree they are – yet in the cards, well, they are seen as the same. It can say remote or provide a specifc location.
  • Skill Match
  • Match experiences you want to gain

Mentor

  • Mentor location
  • Why the mentor can be a great fit for you

There are some additional items on the top of the opportunities screen.

You didn’t get the gig

Yes, the brutal rejection we all love to get. So personal. Actually, in this case, it can be because you can customize what it will say. Although, to be honest, it looked like it was some sort of template where you can change the verbiage, and it shows why they didn’t get it – which could be due to skills or experiences. The end-user can click to learn more. I did like that even though you get rejected; you can still view other opportunities. I found the “update your profile” a bit harsh as though this could be the crux of your problem.

Career Agility (add-on – fee-based)

If you buy any module, this is it. Whenever I look at a system, I always look for the hidden gems that a vendor can often miss as a wonderful bonus.

This is the one area, where the screens would be essential. As noted earlier, I requested, Gloat never responded.

I will say this – if you are looking at Gloat – Tell them you want to see Career Agility (which if you purchase it) will appear in your header as Career Planning). If you do not purchase it, it won’t appear in the header.

Career Journeys

I loved that it offered for types of pathways, however, only one “promoted pathway” gave the end-user the option to see what this meant. The others did not, which they really need. Especially the “Desired path” and “popular path”.

You can also save paths – I liked that too.

UI/UX is fantastic.

Career Tracks

A lot of information here, too much IMO – it can easily overwhelm the end-user.

UI/UX is not great. Actually, it’s below par.

Bottom Line

As an analyst, you always have to remain objective when providing insight to others. Even if the system has a lot of fanfare behind it, it isn’t necessarily perfect, or ideal for all.

Gloat will need to add more content, and at some point, be able to store it in their system. This is content from the client – for learning. Every vendor that I’ve seen who does the” we do not store any content when it comes to learning”, ends up down the road, doing so.

It isn’t necessarily because they want to.

It’s because they have to.

Final Verdict

Gloat4.8 out of 5 (Five being Elite)

For an internal recruiting platform – dubbed a talent marketplace (which will change when it allows external candidates, thus being a recruiting option – talent marketplace ) tapping into skills, experiences, and strengths in a new way, that many folks will love.

Gloat for Learning – 1 out of 5. (One being poor)

If you are using Gloat to empower learning as a core component to the whole marketplace, then there are better options.

Finally, this post is in memory of my brother-in-law, Jon who passed away due to brain cancer. He was 59. And an incredible talent that will be sorely missed.

In response, I’m pleased to welcome three top-tier universities in the Middle East as Coursera partners. Al Faisal University, Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), and Khalifa University will help us offer more rich and relevant content to our learners in the region. With these new additions, we take our number of university partners in the Middle East to eight.

World Water Day is observed and celebrated every on the 22nd of March, to raise awareness of people living without access to safe water. Combining awareness and education, we can create communities worldwide that are far more sustainable. UN World Water Development Report 2022

On March 21, 2022, at the opening ceremony of the 9th World Water Forum in Dakar, Senegal, the UN World Water Development Report 2022 “Groundwater – Making the Invisible Visible” was released. The theme for significant events and campaign actions throughout the year is set by the report and the conclusions of the report provide suggestions for governments all across the world.

Ground Water for World Water Day 2022

Groundwater is invisible, but its impact is visible everywhere-The water we drink, use to grow our food and helps replenish our lakes and rivers. In the driest parts of the world, it may be the only water people have.

Almost all of the liquid freshwater in the world is groundwater, supporting drinking water supplies, sanitation systems, farming, industry and ecosystems. While some groundwater contaminants are naturally occurring, unfortunately, most groundwater contamination is the result of human activity. In many places, human activities over-use and pollute groundwater. In other places, we simply do not know how much water is down there.

What is Groundwater?

Water covers more than 70% of the earth’s surface, but just 1% of that water is readily available for human use. Of that 1% of usable water, 99%  is buried beneath our feet as groundwater.

Water found underground in aquifers is known as groundwater. Gravel, sand, sandstone, or broken rock make up aquifers. The size of the gaps in the soil or rock determines the speed of groundwater movement.

Groundwater is almost everywhere. Depending on many factors, the water table may be deep or shallow and may rise or fall. Heavy rains or melting snow may cause the water table to rise. Heavy pumping of groundwater reserves may cause the water table to drop.

Why We Should Care About Groundwater

We all rely on groundwater in some way. Therefore we need to study and protect it before it’s too late.

Groundwater is being over-used in many locations. With more water extracted from aquifers than replenished by rain and snow. Groundwater contamination is a problem that might take decades, if not centuries, to remedy.

We don’t know how much groundwater is beneath our feet in specific locations, which means we might be wasting a valuable water resource.

What Must We Do About Groundwater?

We must prevent groundwater from being contaminated and use it responsibly. While balancing people’s and the planet’s requirements. The importance of groundwater in sanitation systems, farming, industry, ecosystems, and climate change adaptation must be acknowledged in sustainable development planning.

Studying, preserving, and harnessing groundwater sustainably, will be fundamental to surviving and responding to climate change and satisfying the needs of a growing population.

The UN aims to turn the 2020s into a decade of climate action and support, so it can be at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system, in a time frame which allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development.”

What Boolean Logic Is & How It’s Used In Programming

Boolean logic is a key concept in any programming language, whether you’re creating a video game with C++, developing the next best app in Swift, searching through relational databases in SQL, or working with big data in Python. In this article, we’ll cover what Boolean logic is, how it works, and how to build your own Boolean expressions.

What is Boolean logic?

Boolean logic is a type of algebra in which results are calculated as either TRUE or FALSE (known as truth values or truth variables). Instead of using arithmetic operators like addition, subtraction, and multiplication, Boolean logic utilizes three basic logical operators: AND, OR, and NOT.

TRUE and FALSE: There can only be two

Behind Boolean logic are two very simple words: TRUE and FALSE.

Note that a Boolean TRUE or FALSE is very different from typing the strings “True” and “False” into your code. In fact, programming languages put these two Boolean values into their own object type separate from integers, strings, and floating-point numbers. But while there can be practically infinite possibilities for a numerical or string value in programming, there are only two possible Boolean values: TRUE and FALSE.

How does this work? Boolean logic looks at a reported relationship between things and determines whether the relationship holds. For example, let’s take the equation:

2 + 2 = 4

Here, we have two parts, 2 + 2 and 4, and we’re reporting that those two parts are equal to each other. Is that right? Yes it is, so the Boolean result of this would be TRUE. In this example, the combination of the two parts 2 + 2 and 4, together with the relationship (= equals), is called a Boolean expression.

Let’s look at another Boolean expression:

10 – 4 = 5

Here, we’re reporting that 4 subtracted from 10 is the same as 5. Is that right? Of course not, and that’s why this Boolean expression would return a value of FALSE.

Building Boolean expressions

Keep in mind that Boolean logic only works when an expression can be TRUE or FALSE. For example, the expression 3 + 8 isn’t a Boolean expression because it’s not being compared or related to something else. But the expression 3 + 8 = 10 is a Boolean expression because we can now evaluate each side and see if the reported relationship between them is TRUE or FALSE (in this case, it’s FALSE).

We can build Boolean expressions with all kinds of data, including variables. For example, let’s suppose that we’ve assigned these values to variables x and y somewhere in our code:

y is 3

Now, we can build Boolean expressions using our variables:

Boolean expressions can also determine whether two strings are identical. Just remember that most programming languages are case-sensitive.

There are many other ways to build Boolean expressions, depending on the programming language. For example, you could use a Boolean expression to determine whether a number is contained within a list in Python or whether a text string is within a SQL database table.

Boolean operators

Now that you understand the basics of Boolean expressions, let’s look at another key aspect of Boolean logic: Boolean operators. There are three basic Boolean operators, AND, OR, and NOT.

To better understand how Boolean operators work, let’s suppose for a moment that we’re in an ice cream shop. Say we’re going to put together a two-scoop sundae with different flavors. But I’m a bit of a picky eater, so I may not accept every sundae combination that I get. We can use Boolean expressions and Boolean operators to figure out whether I’ll eat a sundae or not.

AND

The Boolean AND operator is used to confirm that two or more Boolean expressions are all true.

For example, in my sundae, I want the first flavor to be chocolate and the second flavor to be vanilla. We could turn this into a Boolean expression with an AND operator that looks something like this:

Flavor_1 = Chocolate AND Flavor_2 = Vanilla

This means that both the first flavor must be chocolate and the second flavor must be vanilla. Otherwise, I won’t eat the sundae.

We could organize this situation into a table of possibilities like this:

Tables like this are used in Boolean logic all the time. They’re called truth tables, and we can put one together for our sundae example. If something meets my picky sundae flavor conditions, then it’s TRUE. If not, then it’s FALSE.

Here’s how the table above would look like in truth table form:

The Boolean OR operator checks that either one condition or another is true.

For example, if I wanted either the first flavor to be strawberry or the second flavor to be mango, then the Boolean expression would be:

Note that the OR operator returns TRUE if one of the two Boolean expressions is true, but also when both expressions are true. For this reason, this OR operator is also known as an inclusive OR operator. Alternatively, there’s also the XOR (exclusive or) operator, which only returns TRUE when one of the two expressions is true.

NOT

The Boolean NOT operator is different from AND and OR as it only takes one argument. It tests if a value is FALSE or not. Put another way, it changes TRUE values to FALSE and FALSE values to TRUE.  For example, I hate Rum Raisin and absolutely will not eat anything with Rum Raisin in it. The OR clause within the parentheses will return TRUE for anything with Rum Raisin in it. Applying the NOT to it will change the OR expression’s value from TRUE to FALSE and vice versa. Much like operators in arithmetic, Boolean operators have an order of precedence: elements within a parentheses are addressed first, then the NOT operator, AND, and lastly OR. 4 Signs You’re Ready To Learn Another Programming Language
When to learn new programming language

If you wanted to learn how to speak a new language, like Spanish, it wouldn’t make sense to pick up a few vocab words and then decide to start learning Mandarin, too. It’d be confusing, right?

Programming languages are a different story, according to Alex Kuntz, Curriculum Manager at Codecademy. “You certainly don’t need to master one language before moving onto the next,” Alex says. In fact, it’s standard for programmers to toggle between different languages throughout their careers.

Pretty much all programming languages share core features, like variables, conditionals, loops, lists, and functions, Alex says. Once you have those fundamentals down, then you can absolutely dabble in another language — or several languages — and you’ll see how they utilize those same tasks, he says. Another big difference between spoken language and programming? You don’t have to memorize everything when you code — it’s very common to look up code snippets as you need them.

Don’t stress about learning everything there is to know about a specific programming language. “Instead focus on learning concepts, because those concepts will show up in almost every programming language,” Alex says. “And as long as you have a good grasp on the concepts in one language, it is relatively easy to master those concepts in a different language.”

Here are a few common instances when you would want to learn another programming language.

You’re starting a new project

One of the obvious reasons why you’d learn another programming language is if you’re tasked with a project that requires a specific language. Let’s say your employer wants you to create a mobile app: You’d need to know Swift to build iOS apps or React for Android. Or, perhaps you need a more efficient way to automate tasks at work? In that case, you might want to use Ruby, JavaScript, or Python.

Bottom line: Deciding what programming language you should learn boils down to your goal. For example, if you want to build a website, you might want to learn JavaScript, or if you’re working with data, it might make more sense to learn something like SQL or Python. Once you’re familiar with programming generally, you can dive into more advanced and specific features for the language that’s most relevant to you, Alex says.

You’re changing careers (or thinking about it)

If you have your mind set on changing careers to a specific role in tech, then figuring out what languages you need to learn is relatively straightforward. For instance, if you want to become a data scientist, you’d want to learn SQL and Python. An aspiring web developer, on the other hand, would be better suited to learn HTML/CSS and JavaScript.

Be sure to read job descriptions carefully, because they’ll typically list the technical skills and languages that are required for the role. For example, it might say something like, “Knowledge of Java required: JavaScript preferred.” In that case, JavaScript is a desired skill, but not a necessity to be considered for the position.

If you already have a job and are looking for ways to leverage a promotion, adding a language to your tech stack is a smart way to upskill.

Think: What technical skills would give you a leg up in your current role? Where are the gaps in your team’s knowledge, and how could you fill them? How can learning a new language streamline your company’s workflow so it’s more efficient?

You’re just curious

There’s a good chance you’ve heard the adage “programmers are perpetual students” before. That basically means that there’s always something new to learn. And with hundreds of programming languages out there, nobody knows absolutely everything there is to know about coding — that’s what makes it so rewarding and fun.

If you’ve hit a wall with a particular language or course, you might need to shake things up and start learning a new language to stay engaged. It may just be a matter of learning enough to try a project or code challenge to get more hands-on practice.

“It’s typical to stick with one language until you have those fundamentals down,” Alex says. “Then it’s a great idea to look at another language — or multiple other languages — to see how those languages handle those common features.”

In addition to trying different courses altogether, you can always adjust your long-term goal or amp up your weekly learning targets. As a cradle Catholic whose family foundation has donated millions of dollars to Catholic causes, including Catholic secondary school education and student endowments, he’s an unlikely gadfly.

Doyle’s mission is also personal. He began playing tackle football at 7 and had concussions in grade school, high school and college, leaving the team at Xavier after one especially nasty hit. Doyle wondered whether he might incur the same cognitive and neurological issues that N.F.L. players have faced.
