‘Wild’ Ice Skating

Elaine Glusac, the Times Frugal Traveler columnist, chronicled her adventures last year wild skating — outdoor skating on naturally formed ice — on the pristine frozen lakes of southern Alaska, with 10-story glaciers looming above her.

She writes of the terror and magic of skating on “unblemished patches of ice so precisely reflective of a nearby mountain that the lake looked as if it had been surfaced by a Zamboni.”

Does that sound (and look) fun? Scary? Magical? Would you want to wild skate in Alaska or elsewhere?

What outdoor thrills do you enjoy most? Hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, kayaking, snowboarding or camping? What excites you about this activity? What tips would you give to novices about how to get the most out of the experience?
