Nickolas Davatzes, Force Behind A&E and the History Channel, Dies at 79

Nickolas Davatzes, who was instrumental in creating the cable television networks A&E and the History Channel, which now reach into 335 million households around the world, died on Aug. 21 at his home in Wilton, Conn. He was 79.

The cause was complications of Parkinson’s disease, his son George said.

Mr. Davatzes (pronounced dah-VAT-sis) was president and chief executive of A&E, originally the Arts & Entertainment Network, which he ran from 1983 to 2005 as a joint venture of the Hearst Corporation and the Disney-ABC Television Group. He introduced the History Channel in 1995 and remained an aggressive advocate, both within the industry and as a spokesman before Congress, for educational and public affairs programming.

By the mid-1980s, A&E had emerged — mostly through buying programming and building a bankable viewer audience by negotiating distribution rights with local cable systems — as the sole surviving advertiser-supported cultural cable service.

“After 60 days here, I told my wife I didn’t think this thing had a 20 percent chance, because every time I turned around there was another obstacle,” Mr. Davatzes told The New York Times in 1989. “I used to say that we were like a bumblebee — we weren’t supposed to fly.”

But they did. A&E became profitable within three years by offering an eclectic menu of daily programming that, as The Times put it, “might include a biographical portrait of Herbert Hoover, a program about the embattled buffalo, a dramatization of an Ann Beattie short story and a turn from the stand-up comic Buzz Belmondo.”

“We don’t want to duplicate ‘The A-Team’ or ‘Laverne & Shirley,’” Mr. Davatzes told The Times in 1985. “There is a younger generation that has never seen any thought-provoking entertainment on television. They’ve seen a rock star destroying a guitar every 16 minutes, but they’ve never seen classical music.

“By network standards,” he continued, “our viewership will always be limited. But that is the function of cable — to present enough alternatives so that individuals can be their own programmers.”

Under the A&E umbrella, the network encompassed a broad mix of entertainment and nonfiction programming. It created a singular identity with scripted shows (“100 Centre Street,” “A Nero Wolfe Mystery”) and collaborations like its wildly popular co-production with the BBC of “Pride and Prejudice,” a mini-series based on the Jane Austen novel starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle.

The network continued to expand its scope to include documentary series like “Biography”; “Hoarders,” which might be classified as an anthropological study of compulsive stockpiling; and the History Channel’s encyclopedic scrutiny of Adolf Hitler.

Mr. Davatzes was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President George W. Bush in 2006. The French government made him a chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters in 1989. He was inducted into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame in 1999.

After his death, Frank A. Bennack Jr., the executive vice chairman of Hearst, called him “the father of the History Channel.”

Nickolas Davatzes was born on March 14, 1942, in Manhattan to George Davatzes, a Greek immigrant, and Alexandra (Kordes) Davatzes, whose parents were from Greece. Both his parents worked in the fur trade.

After graduating from Bryant High School in Astoria, Queens, he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1962 and a master’s in sociology in 1964, both from St. John’s University, where he met his future wife, Dorothea Hayes.

In addition to his son George, he is survived by his wife; another son, Dr. Nicholas Davatzes; a sister, Carol Davatzes Ferrandino; and four grandchildren. Another son, Christopher, died before him.

After serving in the Marines, Mr. Davatzes joined the Xerox Corporation in 1965 and shifted to information technology at Intext Communications Systems in 1978. A friend introduced him to an executive at the fledgling Warner Amex cable company, who recruited him over lunch and had him sign a contract drawn on a restaurant napkin. He went to work there in 1980, alongside cable television pioneers like Richard Aurelio and Larry Wangberg.

The Arts & Entertainment Network took shape in 1983, when he helped put the finishing touches on a merger between two struggling cable systems: the Entertainment Network, owned by RCA and the Rockefeller family, and the ARTS Network, owned by Hearst and ABC.

His strategy in the beginning was twofold: to focus on making the network more available to viewers, and not to be diverted by producing original programs, instead focusing on acquiring existing ones.

“If you’re in programming, we know that 85 percent of every new show that goes on the air usually fails,” said in a 2001 interview with The Cable Center, an educational arm of the cable industry.

“Our overall approach is to create a sane economic model,” Mr. Davatzes said in 1985. “I like to tell people working for us that we don’t eat at ‘21.’”

MongoDB is one of the most popular databases behind modern applications. We sat down with Rachelle Palmer, a Lead Product Manager at MongoDB, to ask a few questions about MongoDB, product management, what she’s working on, and more!


Hi Rachelle 👋 Thanks for joining us! Let’s start with the basics — in your own words, how would you explain MongoDB to someone who’s not familiar?

The simplest way to explain MongoDB: it’s a database — a place to store your application data — where the data is stored in the form of JSON documents instead of columns and rows.

How did you first learn about MongoDB?

Years ago, I had an NLP project to scrape text from Twitter and then analyze it, and the Lead Engineer wanted to use MongoDB. He raved about it, trying to convince the rest of the team.

This is pretty typical of MongoDB — individual engineers who bring us into their work projects. That was my first time hearing about it, I think…

Fast forward to 2013, I applied for a job at MongoDB. I installed it the night that I got the email saying I had an interview, opened up a terminal, and set up my first cluster. That really opened my eyes to the technology itself, that I could get going so quickly. It was definitely unlike my experience using other databases in the past.

You’ve held a lot of different roles at MongoDB — can you tell us a little bit about your career progression and how you ended up where you are now?

Sure! When I joined, I was a Program Manager for our Cloud team. Back then, the Cloud team was just forming, so Program Managers did everything except write code. I wrote docs, helped users, gave webinars, tallied up revenues in excel — whatever was needed.

Once we had traction, it became clear that what we really needed was a support team for these new products. I led and built that team, which grew to 20 engineers in North America. Once Atlas was launched, I became the lead and grew that team worldwide, ending up with a team of 49 engineers across Europe, India, North America, Israel, Australia, Buenos Aires, etc.

I loved my team and the camaraderie and what we’d accomplished, but I wanted to do something different. So, in early 2020 I moved over to our product team, where I now focus on drivers, libraries, framework integrations, and the overall developer experience of using MongoDB.

What kinds of technical skills do you think are most valuable for Product Managers, both thinking about your role specifically and more broadly?

Oh well… it sort of depends on what kind of Product Manager you are. I personally am a data monster. Thou shalt make no decisions without data!

Technical skills that are invaluable are Python scripting, skills in statistical analysis, and advanced Excel. Otherwise, understanding how certain tools and technologies work together — what gaps they fill and utility they provide — as well as having a solid baseline of understanding around development in general.

Your focus as a Product Manager is on “Developer Experience.” Can you tell us a little more about what that encompasses?

Being the Product Manager for DevEx means I think about:

  1. Using MongoDB in whatever stack you’re comfortable in. If that’s PHP with Laravel, C# with Unity’s game engine, or managing MongoDB with Kubernetes — does it all work? Where’s the friction?
  2. Using MongoDB products together. We have tools like our VS Code Extension, Compass (a database GUI), and then ODMs to make life easier. Do they all work seamlessly together in an obvious way? Do users know these things exist?
  3. Helping developers do their jobs. Once you’ve built an application with MongoDB, what happens when it becomes a wild success? Do developers know how to scale that application and their database? This is basically helping developers ‘do’ DevOps.
  4. And the end-to-end journey of getting started with MongoDB to being a long-term user who is performing an upgrade of your server, driver, and updates to application code. Do developers have everything they need to succeed — tools, tutorials, and everything in between?

What kinds of problems are you working to solve for MongoDB developers?

Lately, I’m spending a lot of time on a few things, so I’m going to pick at random:

  • The Python developer experience, particularly when using data science tools like Jupyter, pandas, and Numpy. We recently released a library for this (pymongoarrow), and we’re working with a partner, Coiled.io, on a really sweet integration with Jupyter and Dask.
  • For C#, a MongoDB extension for the Visual Studio IDE and a rewrite of our LINQ provider.
  • For Node.js, we just released our new driver, which is actually in Typescript. I’m working on a blog post on how we went about rewriting the driver, which was a scary idea that frankly went much better than we imagined it would.
  • For Rust, performance enhancements! Because why not make Rust applications that much faster than everything else?

Initially, with the craze of MEAN/MERN stack, the bulk of developers using MongoDB were Node.js devs, but that’s changed over time. There are huge MongoDB communities for Go, Ruby, PHP, Rust, and all the languages in between.

So, first, there’s much more variety, more growth, and therefore more to build, which is great. Second, the biggest observable trend is the blurring of the lines between developer roles and what that means. In a recent survey where ~80% of the respondents were Software Engineers, the SEs said that (despite their title) they were expected to do database admin tasks, sysadmin tasks, or data analysis tasks.

This sort of reminds me of how we’ve seen shifts of developers to being full-stack, then developers being tasked with moving to cloud platforms. Basically, developers are increasingly being asked to do more than one job, and they must do them all well.

I anticipate that tools will evolve to become more developer-focused even if their function is not purely “for” developers and that solutions like serverless and cloud services like Atlas that can be operated purely from APIs and CLIs will continue to grow.

We teach a bit of MongoDB with Javascript/Node.js in our course on testing, but MongoDB works with a lot of different languages. What do you think is the most underrated MongoDB/language pair, and why?

Underrated… Well, I try to view the languages more like chess pieces — where the goal is to understand each piece and value each one equally. That being said, my recent favorite is probably Dart. I don’t know if that qualifies, but I was really excited for MongoDB to build a Dart/Flutter SDK for Realm (our mobile solution), and I’m really hopeful that this language will continue to grow.

And last but not least, is there any advice you have for our learners who are interested in working with MongoDB for the first time?

There are great resources and tutorials everywhere you look. We also host our own courses through MongoDB University (check out MongoDB Basics), tutorials on DevHub, and resources for educators and students through MongoDB for Academia.

10 Swift Coding Challenges for Beginners

Learning Swift or any other programming language can be exciting and fun, but lessons can only get you so far. To truly master coding, it’s important to apply your new skills to exercises and projects that build on all your previous knowledge. That’s why we put together these 10 exercises for Swift beginners.

Before you get started, we recommend that you first understand the fundamental concepts of Swift before taking on these challenges. And it never hurts to understand some foundations of coding to make sure you’re developing good habits from the start.

10 Swift coding challenges

Below are 10 coding challenges for beginners that’ll help you become more familiar with Swift. Half involve strings, and half involve numbers. For each exercise, we’ve also included a slightly more difficult challenge to take on once you’ve mastered the basic exercises.

1. Singular or plural?

Create a function that accepts a string as an input. If the string ends in “-s,” then the string should return TRUE to indicate that the word is plural. Otherwise, it should return FALSE. Keep in mind that the function should return a Boolean value (TRUE or FALSE) and not a string value (“true” or “false”).

We like this challenge because it’s easy to step up the difficulty if you’re feeling up for it. Your function can include cases that handle irregular plurals — “women,” “children,” “geese,” and so on. You can do this using conditional statements within your function.

2. Reverse a string

Come up with a function that takes an input string and reverses its order. For example, “I love Codecademy!” should return “!ymedacedoC evol I.”

For an added challenge, switch capitalization so that each new word is capitalized. So, “I love Codecademy” outputs as “Ymedacedoc Evol I.”

3. Isograms

An isogram is a word that has no repeated letters. For example, “today” is an isogram, but “tomorrow” is not. Create a function that accepts an input string and returns TRUE if the word is an isogram and FALSE if the word is not.

As an added challenge, if the word is an isogram, output the repeated letter or letters instead of outputting TRUE. So, an input of “tomorrow” would output [“o”, “r”].

4. Find the palindrome

You may remember that a palindrome is a word that’s spelled the same backward and forwards — like “mom” or “racecar.” Create a function that accepts a string as input and returns TRUE if the string is a palindrome.

For an extra challenge, find a way to check whether a phrase or sentence is a palindrome — for example, “Taco Cat” or, “Too bad I hid a boot.” You’ll have to find a way to remove spaces in your phrases to get the function to work.

5. Name cards

Imagine that you’re creating name cards for a group of international guests. Their names and home countries can be stored as key-value pairs in a dictionary:

guests = [ “Mike” : “Canada”, “Jane” : “Australia”, “Angela” : “Germany”, “Robert” : “Nigeria”]

Create a function that accepts a name as an input string and outputs a name card greeting that includes the person’s name and country. For example, “I’m [name], and I’m from [country].” So, inputting Robert’s name would output, “I’m Robert, and I’m from Nigeria.”

If a name isn’t in the dictionary, then the output should just include the person’s name.

Looking for a further challenge? If a person’s name isn’t already in the dictionary, display a message like, “New name detected. Please enter country,” and prompt the user to enter a country name. The name and country should then get added to the existing dictionary. Hint: use readLine() to accept user input.

6. Factorial challenge

Remember factorials from high school? The factorial “!” operator means that you should multiply a number by all the whole numbers that come before the number. So, 4! is equal to 4 x 3 x 2 x 1, or 24.

Create a function that accepts an integer as input and calculates the factorial of that number. If the number is 4, then the output should be 24.

Looking for more of a challenge? Try validating the user input. If a number is less than zero, then display a message that says, “Input cannot be negative.” If the input is 0, then the output should be 1.

7. Ascending order

Create a function that outputs the numbers in a positive numerical input in ascending order. For example, an input of 9462 should output 2469.

To give yourself more of a challenge, add an argument to your function that accepts the strings “ascending” or “descending.” Depending on the input of this argument, your function should sort the array in either ascending or descending order.

8. Is there a higher number?

For a given array and number, n, create a function that returns TRUE if a number in the array is greater than n. For example, for an array [24, 32, 42, 34] and n = 50, the output should be FALSE.

For an added challenge, if there are multiple numbers in the array higher than n, return an array of the higher numbers in ascending order. So, for an array [24, 32, 42, 34] and n = 27, the output should be [32, 34, 42].

9. Evens and odds

Create a function that splits an input array into two arrays — one with only even numbers and the other with only odd numbers. For example, an input of [3, 45, 9, 80, 1, 306] will output [[80, 306],[3, 45, 9, 1]].

To make the exercise more challenging, add an additional argument to your function, n. Numbers divisible by n are put in the first output array, and all other numbers go in the second output array. For example, for the input array [3, 5, 18, 10] and n = 3, the output array should be [[3, 18], [5, 10]].

10. Digit length filter

For a given input array and number n, create a function that only outputs numbers with n digits. So, an input of [34, 29, 99, 434, 1, 3] and n = 2 should only output [34, 29, 99].

For an extra challenge, create a function that filters out numbers with a given number of decimal places.

10 Python Code Challenges for Beginners

One of the best ways to test and practice your skills with Python is by solving coding challenges. You can learn a lot from books and online courses, but coding isn’t an armchair activity. You have to write some code to make genuine progress.

Coding challenges are perfect for this. Coding challenges are small problems you can solve with code. Just because they’re small doesn’t mean they won’t put your knowledge to the test. Each bite-size challenge will focus on skills that you’ll use later working on complete software projects.

In this article, we’ll give you 10 beginner Python coding challenges to get you started. Try one or two a day to keep your Python skills sharp. And if you want to continue challenging your Python skills, we’ll show you how you can do that at the end of the article.

Top 10 beginner Python code challenges

These are beginner-level challenges, but you need to know the Python programming language to complete them. If your Python skills are a little rusty, check out Learn Python 3 for a course that’s suitable for beginners.

You can code your solutions locally if you have a development environment already set up. If not, try out one of the many sites that will allow you to execute Python code in the browser. And if you get stuck, search Google for help solving the problem, but don’t do it too soon. Give it your best shot first.

1. Convert radians into degrees

Write a function in Python that accepts one numeric parameter. This parameter will be the measure of an angle in radians. The function should convert the radians into degrees and then return that value.

While you might find a Python library to do this for you, you should write the function yourself. One hint you get is that you’ll need to use Pi in order to solve this problem. You can import the value for Pi from Python’s math module.

2. Sort a list

Create a function in Python that accepts two parameters. The first will be a list of numbers. The second parameter will be a string that can be one of the following values: asc, desc, and none.

If the second parameter is “asc,” then the function should return a list with the numbers in ascending order. If it’s “desc,” then the list should be in descending order, and if it’s “none,” it should return the original list unaltered.

3. Convert a decimal number into binary

Write a function in Python that accepts a decimal number and returns the equivalent binary number. To make this simple, the decimal number will always be less than 1,024, so the binary number returned will always be less than ten digits long.

4. Count the vowels in a string

Create a function in Python that accepts a single word and returns the number of vowels in that word. In this function, only a, e, i, o, and u will be counted as vowels — not y.

5. Hide the credit card number

Write a function in Python that accepts a credit card number. It should return a string where all the characters are hidden with an asterisk except the last four. For example, if the function gets sent “4444444444444444”, then it should return “4444”.

6. Are the Xs equal to the Os?

Create a Python function that accepts a string. This function should count the number of Xs and the number of Os in the string. It should then return a boolean value of either True or False.

If the count of Xs and Os are equal, then the function should return True. If the count isn’t the same, it should return False. If there are no Xs or Os in the string, it should also return True because 0 equals 0. The string can contain any type and number of characters.

7. Create a calculator function

Write a Python function that accepts three parameters. The first parameter is an integer. The second is one of the following mathematical operators: +, -, /, or . The third parameter will also be an integer.

The function should perform a calculation and return the results. For example, if the function is passed 6 and 4, it should return 24.

8. Give me the discount

Create a function in Python that accepts two parameters. The first should be the full price of an item as an integer. The second should be the discount percentage as an integer.

The function should return the price of the item after the discount has been applied. For example, if the price is 100 and the discount is 20, the function should return 80.

9. Just the numbers

Write a function in Python that accepts a list of any length that contains a mix of non-negative integers and strings. The function should return a list with only the integers in the original list in the same order.

10. Repeat the characters

Create a Python function that accepts a string. The function should return a string, with each character in the original string doubled. If you send the function “now” as a parameter, it should return “nnooww,” and if you send “123a!”, it should return “112233aa!!”.

Messi wants to stay at Barcelona, the only professional home he has ever known, and Barcelona desperately wants to keep him. Maybe your school started in early August, like schools in Atlanta. Or maybe, like schools in New York City, your first day isn’t until mid-September. You might be wearing a mask or you might not. Or you might live in a place where the rules keep changing.

For those of you who have started school, what is it like to be back? If you haven’t returned yet, what are you looking forward to when you do? What, if anything, are you dreading?

In an Aug. 20 article, “A Pandemic First Day of School in California,” our colleague Soumya Karlamangla shares first day of school images from across the state, as well as some of the emails people sent her about how the big day went. She writes:

The first day of school is stressful under the best of circumstances: picking the right outfit, navigating hallways and making new friends.

And that’s when there isn’t a pandemic.

Across California, millions of children have returned to classrooms, including more than 600,000 students in the Los Angeles Unified School District who started classes on Monday.

The first day, for many the first time back in a classroom since March 2020, was both monumental and oh-so ordinary. Yes, there were masks and staggered lunches, but also reunions among buddies, tearful goodbyes with parents and confusing math problems.

The article includes a poem by Ashley Ko, a high school senior in Saratoga, Calif. Here is an excerpt:

Walked into school, 9-12 swarming like bees
(Luckily, I did not get a heart attack)
I was pretty close to the parking lot, had many thoughts
Of turning back until …
“ASHLEY I HAVEN’T SEEN YOU SO LONG!”
(Do I hug? Uhh, do I awkwardly stand 6 ft away?)

Sitting in AP Language & Composition, forgetting
that I walk into a classroom.
Not a ZOOM link.
30 minutes into class.
(I miss my cat.)
40 minutes into class.
(I miss going to the bathroom
Without an e-pass.)
50 minutes into class.
(I miss my snack pantry,
quite desperately)
60 minutes into class.
(I need to switch my pants
Into sweatpants, RIGHT NOW)
70 minutes into class
(I can not wait to go home.)

But,
I still have 2 more classes to go.”

It also includes these thoughts by Jesus Gonzales, a high school statistics teacher:

“By the end of the day, having students in my class, all masked correctly, talking to each other and discussing a statistics problem; eating lunch with my fellow teachers; hearing announcements over the intercom — I felt something that I have been missing this last year and a half: hope as well as an inner sadness for lost time.”

Students, read the entire article, then tell us:

  • Has school started for you? Were you nervous to return? How is it going so far? What has been especially good — or especially bad — about being back?

  • If you have just returned to school after months of attending class online, can you relate to some of what Ashley Ko writes in her poem, above? What internal thoughts were you having as you went about your day?

  • If you haven’t started the school year yet, what are you looking forward to — and what are you dreading?

  • The article describes the normalcy of school this year as “both monumental and oh-so ordinary.” If you are back, do you agree with that description? Why or why not? Did you feel anything like the “hope as well as an inner sadness for lost time” that Jesus Gonzalez describes above?

  • Whether you’re back or not, take a minute to think about the role of school in your life. What do you think you personally gained and lost over the last 18 months as a result of having ordinary school disrupted? Why?

Where to go. That’s where I was this morning, actually the day before. Normally, I have an idea of what to write. Other times, an epiphany that zings into my brain on the day of the post. Then there are “this is what I will write” only to change my mind at the last second.

Never though a total conundrum.

Should I write a follow-up to a webinar that I co-presented whereas nearly 500 people attended, even though webinar and online meeting fatigue has set in? (Which I thank all those who did push pas that)

Should I dive into specific topics that were covered, such as the premise that initial LMSs were driven by HR – which I strongly disagree – I saw no proof of that, but then again, I wasn’t flying all over the country to validate it.

Should I write how EdTech scored a huge F this past year, with their continued believe that synchronous based learning is effective? It is so effective, supposedly, that way too many people, students, teachers, politicians all pushed towards back into the classroom, and repeatedly ripped into “virtual learning”.

Should I write about the debate on whether commercial authoring tools are starting a decline, with the masses (due to COVID-19) and the anyone can build content being the key narrative – leading to an extensive amount of bad courses and content (simply due to the lack of sound instructional design knowledge -a cause to push quickly and you have to do it – because we need it, even though you lack those skills) – an irony, because rapid course authoring tools broke the market, under the premise of anyone can build quickly (and caused the demise of solutions such as Authorware, Dazzler Max and similar).

Should I write about the CLO role (not everyone but plenty) who push hard on new learning technologies because their companies can afford it – such as custom VR content, even though, overall other companies can’t – creating a have and have not? OR some CLOs who are leery about e-learning, but have to add it, still they are driven by OD to such a degree, that it impedes the overall growth (IMO).

Should I write that the reason VR has not taken off is due to the reality that great VR content requires custom development which easily can run into the 100 of thousands of dollars? With some custom shops who create wonderful VR setting back companies, a price point that is out of reach to so many?

Should I write about the potential liability concerns with VR headsets being used at someone’s home, knowing that they (the individual) needs to mark out (ahead of time) the space they will use, so that they do not bang into a wall or door or trip over a toy, and decide it is the fault of the company who supplied the headset in the first place? (Even though, the employee should have read the directions).

Should I write about the cost of VR headsets and again, the have and have-not is clearly defined as a result? I mean, big companies can buy them for a chunk or all their employees if they so desire. A small company or even mid-size has to find the budget to do so.

Should I write about whether e-learning, and even learning technologies are creating an exclusivity atmosphere to such an extent, we – as a collective are spurring this on, without realizing it?

Should I write that while the industry around internet access can fix itself by governments investing in broadband infrastructure, even though at least in the U.S., we still can’t pass a 3 Trillion dollars infrastructure bill to fix our crumbling highways, bridges (which everyone gripes about), invest in solar and other green technologies to counter climate change.

Should I write that some companies are willing to invest in their front line workforce, blue-collar workforce with engaging, interactive e-learning and learning technologies, but again, it is not universal. Creating, once again, a have and have not situation.

Should I write about systems who excel at deep configuration, and systems that even offer it, compared to those who really don’t? Deep configuration offers the client, the ability to strip the system down to the studs (using a house metaphor) and re-build it. It’s not cheap, with average pricing ranges running from 75 thousand dollars to more than 500, 000 thousand dollars (USD). Once again limiting companies, businesses, associations, and so on, to a few and not all?

Should I write that authoring tools themselves are pricing in many cases, out of the range to businesses, or entities entering the space for the first time, or causing a line item that requires a budget change, and potential impact to other learning technology initiatives? Again, have and have not.

Should I write how L&D and Training departments are still being stripped of funds, despite more than ever the need for learning systems with the push around upskilling and re-skilling at the forefront? Causing a do we do this and buy this OR sacrifice that – at the cost of their own learners?

Should I write about the implementation fees, with many systems, going far higher than in the past, for the usual items, including basic configuration – of skinning, adding your own logo and perhaps a tweak in your system? Plus the updates and maintenance component, which everyone gets?

OR how such basics as white labeling is an extra cost for so many, even though if you are customer education, especially selling B2B and B2C, the majority want to see only their name and not that of the vendor.

Should I write that there are vendors today who still lack a mobile app (iOS and Android) but espouse that their system looks great on mobile and more people are accessing mobile to take content? Should I add, that there are are vendors who have a mobile app for iOS (iPhones) but still lack one for Android, even though the latter has over 70% market share worldwide?

Should I write how there are learning system vendors who will white-label their mobile app (native) to the client’s brand name, which is an added plus when your learners are searching for your WidgetU in the Apple or Google Play stores, rather than the name of the vendor? Should I write that some vendors charge as low at 10 thousand dollars and others a King’s ransom?

Should I write that there are a handful of learning system vendors today who allow the sharing of content on What’s App which is used by over 1 billion people worldwide or that there are only a handful that can share content (created by your learners) on Instagram? And that the number that offers video content sharing by your learners on Tik-Tok is zero (to my knowledge), despite this social medium being red hot?

Should I write as you see repeatedly my very grave concern around have and have not, that so many of us believed would never cross into e-learning, even though it is rampant in society? Should I add that this is not limited to e-learning, rather learning (on-site) in general?

Should I write that way too many vendors think one session to train your administrator(s) is enough to learn the system and if they want more they pay for it? Or to offset the “fee” feel free to read our manual (PDF) or knowledge base or by golly our outstanding chat bot that they themselves may get frustrated with, on other web sites (which data continues to support that people as a whole, hate chatbots for support.

Should I write that there are learning system vendors whose own system that offers learners the ability to select skills tied to their job role or one they are interested in, often will not include skills or even the job role for an Instructional Designer, Instructional Technologist, even a training or L&D executive? Including, CLO?

Should I write that learning system vendors as a whole who push learner content creation, do not provide any basics on how do to that OR even for those who are using their built-in authoring tool, some common Instructional design techniques to help them? The assumption being people who are interested while search for it, ignoring the fact that in today’s business environment, the majority of people creating the courses have zero knowledge around training or learning, even what is ID?

Should I write that assigned learning exists not just in LMSs, but LXPs – and has for a few years? Or that learner-centric the narrative LXPs pushed in marketing, doesn’t exist when all your are offering to your learners is assigned learning?

Should I write about a few learning systems that I can'[t understand why anyone would want to buy them, when there are far better systems out there- even within your budget?

Should I write that “everything you may want especially around skills capabilities” may not be available with your budget and thus you have to compromise? Then have to listen to the CEO or whomever who can’t understand why the system for the company isn’t like so-so, as though you are intentionally doing this? As if undermining is the goal (which, uh its all about the budget you have been given).

Bottom Line

Perhaps, I shouldn’t.

Too late.
