‘Where We Are’: A Photo Essay Contest for Exploring Community

The Covid-19 pandemic closed schools and canceled dances. It emptied basketball courts, theaters, recreation centers and restaurants. It sent clubs, scout troops and other groups online.

Now, many people have ventured back out into physical spaces to gather with one another once again. What does in-person “community” look like today? And what are the different ways people are creating it?

In this new contest, inspired by “Where We Are” — an immersive visual project from The New York Times that explores the various places around the world where young people come together — we’re inviting teenagers to create their own photo essays to document the local, offline communities that interest them.

Using The Times’s Where We Are series as a guide, create a photo essay that documents an interesting local, offline community. Whether your grandmother’s Mah Jong club, the preteens who hang out at a nearby basketball court, or the intergenerational volunteers who walk the dogs for your neighborhood animal shelter, this community can feature people of any age, as long as it gathers in person.

We encourage you to choose a community you are not a part of for reasons we explain below, in the F.A.Q.

Whichever community you choose, however, it’ll be your job to interview and photograph them. Then, you’ll pull everything together in a visual essay, which will tell the group’s story via a short introduction and a series of captioned photographs.

Your photo essay MUST include:

  • Between six and eight images, uploaded in the order in which you’d like us to view them.

  • A short caption of no more than 50 words for each image that helps explain what it shows and why it is important to the story.

  • A short introduction of up to 300 words that offers important background or context that complements and adds to the information in the photos and captions. You might consider the introduction the beginning of your essay, which the photos and captions will then continue. Together they will answer questions like who this community is, how it came to be, and why it matters. (Our forthcoming How To guide will offer more detail about this.)

  • At least one quote — embedded in either the introduction or one of the captions — from a member of the community about what makes it meaningful.


In addition to the guidelines above, here are a few more details:

  • You must be a student ages 13 to 19 in middle school or high school to participate, and all students must have parent or guardian permission to enter. Please see the F.A.Q. section for additional eligibility details.

  • The photographs and writing you submit should be fundamentally your own — they should not be plagiarized, created by someone else or generated by artificial intelligence.

  • Your photo essay should be original for this contest. That means it should not already have been published at the time of submission, whether in a school newspaper, for another contest or anywhere else.

  • Keep in mind that the work you send in should be appropriate for a Times audience — that is, something that could be published in a family newspaper (so, please, no curse words).

  • You may work alone, in pairs, or in groups of up to four for this challenge, but students should submit only one entry each.

  • Remember to get permission from those you photograph, and to collect their contact information. Learn more about this in the F.A.Q. below.

  • You must also submit a short, informal “artist’s statement” as part of your submission, that describes your process. These statements, which will not be used to choose finalists, help us to design and refine our contests. See the F.A.Q. to learn more.

  • All entries must be submitted by March 20, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific time using the electronic form below.

QUESTIONS ABOUT CREATING YOUR PHOTO ESSAY

What is a photo essay? How does it differ from just a series of photos?

A photo essay tells a story through a series of images. These images work together and build on each other to explore a theme of some kind. The photo essays in the Where We Are series, for instance, focus on the themes of community and coming-of-age, but each through a different lens, as the three images published here illustrate. Together they are beautiful examples of how visual collections can investigate ideas by illuminating both the “big picture” and the tiny, telling details.

How do I choose a good subject for this?

Our Student Opinion forum can help via its many questions that encourage you to brainstorm local, offline communities of all kinds.

Can I be a member of the community I photograph?

You can, but we encourage you not to. Part of the point of this contest is to help you investigate the interesting subcultures in your area, and expand your understanding of “community” by finding out about groups you otherwise may never have known existed.

But we also think it will be easier to do the assignment as an outsider. You will be coming to the community with “fresh eyes” and relative objectivity, and will be able to notice things that insiders may be too close to see.

If you do choose to depict a community you are a part of, we ask that you do not include yourself in the photos.

I’d like to work with others to create this. How do I do that?

You can work alone, with a partner, or with up to three other people. So, for example, in a group of four, two people might act as photographers, while the other two interview community members. When you are ready to edit your material and write up what you have discovered, the interviewers could use their notes to handle the short introduction, while the photographers could edit their shots into a meaningful visual sequence, and help collaborate on the captions.

Please remember, however, that you can only have your name on one submission.

Do I need permission to photograph the people in this community?

You do. It is good journalistic practice to tell the people you are photographing why you are taking pictures of them, and to ask their permission. They should also know that, if you are a winner, their image and name may appear online.

Though you do not have to have a signed permission sheet from every participant, if you are a winner and we publish your work, we will need to be able to reach those depicted, so please get their contact information before you take their pictures. (If you are photographing young children, this is especially important. Secure a parent or guardian’s permission first.)

An important exception to this: If you are taking photos of crowds in public places, such as at a sporting event, a community meeting or a local fair, you don’t need to worry about permissions, as it would be impossible to get them from all attendees.

I don’t know where to begin! What advice do you have?

Once you’ve chosen a community to photograph, begin by introducing yourself to ensure the participants are open to your project. Then, devote a bit of time to just observing, noticing how and where the members of this group spend time, what they do together, and how they relate to each other.

Who is eligible to participate in this contest?

This contest is open to students ages 13 to 19 who are in middle school or high school around the world. College students cannot submit an entry. However, high school students (including high school postgraduate students) who are taking one or more college classes can participate. Students attending their first year of a two-year CEGEP in Quebec Province can also participate. In addition, students age 19 or under who have completed high school but are taking a gap year or are otherwise not enrolled in college can participate.

The children and stepchildren of New York Times employees are not eligible to enter this contest. Nor are students who live in the same household as those employees.

Why are you asking for an Artist’s Statement about our process? What will you do with it?

All of us who work on The Learning Network are former teachers. One of the many things we miss, now that we work in a newsroom rather than a classroom, is being able to see how students are reacting to our “assignments” in real time — and to offer help, or tweaks, to make those assignments better. We’re asking you to reflect on what you did and why, and what was hard or easy about it, in large part so that we can improve our contests and the curriculum we create to support them. This is especially important for new contests, like this one.

Another reason? We have heard from many teachers that writing these statements is immensely helpful to students. Stepping back from a piece and trying to put into words what you wanted to express, and why and how you made artistic choices to do that, can help you see your piece anew and figure out how to make it stronger. For our staff, they offer important context that help us understand individual students and submissions, and learn more about the conditions under which students around the world create.

I’m not an art teacher. Can this work for my students too?

Yes! Though this is a new contest for us, we chose it in part because the theme of “community” is such an important one in subjects across the curriculum. In fact, we hope it might inspire teachers in different curriculum areas to collaborate.

For example, students in social studies could investigate the role of community locally, learning about the history of different influential groups. An English teacher might support students as they interview and craft their introductions and photo captions, while an art teacher could offer tips for photo composition. And, of course, a journalism teacher could guide the full project, or work with other teachers to publish the most successful results in the school paper.

How do my students prove to me that they entered this contest?

After they press “Submit” on the form below, they will see a “Thank you for your submission.” line appear. They can take a screenshot of this message. Please note: Our system does not currently send confirmation emails.


Please read the following carefully before you submit:

  • Students who are 13 and older in the United States or the United Kingdom, or 16 and older elsewhere in the world, can submit their own entries. Those who are 13 to 15 and live outside the United States or the United Kingdom must have an adult submit on their behalf.

  • All students who are under 18 must provide a parent or guardian’s permission to enter.

What is Pseudocode? Here’s What You Need to Know

Pseudocode is an effective tool that programmers can use to break large problems down into more digestible sections. Imagine a writer who plans to write a novel. There are many elements to consider, like the characters, plot, setting, scenes, and so on. Without a way to plan the story’s direction, the novel can become a collection of disconnected ideas. That’s why most writers plot out the basic details in an outline. 

Pseudocode is like a writer’s outline, only it’s a roadmap for writing code. It takes some basic programming knowledge to understand what you’re looking at when reading pseudocode. But since pseudocode isn’t an actual programming language or tied to a specific syntax, even beginners and non-programmers can grasp the high-level basics of the application’s outline or rough draft.  

Ahead, we’ll explain how pseudocode can come in handy when building various applications. And if you’re more of a visual learner, check out the video below.

Why programmers use pseudocode 

Pseudocode lets programmers write their application plans in plain English before transferring it to a programming language, like Java. This makes it easier to determine user flows and eliminate top-level flow errors. 

​​Developing software​ is a collaborative process. Along with programmers, you also have product designers, marketing managers, and other teams who have a stake in the application’s development. Resolving problems among team members with varying levels of programming knowledge can eat up a lot of resources, which is one reason why pseudocode helps dev teams save both time and effort. 

Pseudocode helps devs find pitfalls and problems before development begins. Once the pseudocode outline is complete, it’s usually inspected and verified by other programmers or system designers. In short, pseudocode makes it easier to write algorithms that work with minimal issues and deliver the desired result before you get to the nitty gritty coding work.

Using pseudocode to solve problems 

Pseudocode serves as a versatile tool that aids in various aspects of the coding journey, like problem-solving. With pseudocode, you can break down complex problems into manageable, bite-sized pieces or subgroups and get closer to identifying the core problem an application aims to solve. Pseudocode acts as a document for high-level solutions and provides a structured overview of the planned approach. Plus, pseudocode can be valuable when you’re evaluating the success of a project because you can compare your end product with the initial intentions. 

Here are some more advantages of using pseudocode​​: 

  • Better readability. Pseudocode makes communication clearer for people from an array of disciplines, such as mathematicians, business partners, and managers. 
  • Better code construction. Pseudocode makes it easier to convert those principles into code written in any programming language faster. 
  • Faster development: Outlining a project with pseudocode helps solidify an idea and expedite production. 
  • Easier bug detection and repair. The ​higher-level​ format in pseudocode makes finding and repairing bugs faster and smoother before the first line of code is even written. 

In addition to all of these benefits, pseudocode can be used to create user scenarios and stories, avoid bugs, crashes, and other error messages. It’s flexible and doesn’t follow the same formal standards as writing code, so it allows you to discover more efficient solutions, iterate quicker, and create a more refined coding process overall. 

How to write pseudocode 

The cool thing about pseudocode, especially for beginners, is that it’s not tied to a specific programming language or formal standards. Technically anyone can write pseudocode, but you need some fundamental programming knowledge to understand what it is you’re describing or reading. In our free course Learn the Basics of Programming, you’ll acquire foundational programming knowledge and hone your pseudocode writing skills. This course also helps you identify the programming language that best suits your goals.  

Pseudocode is typically written in uppercase, and the six primary parameters (or keywords) of pseudocode are: 

  • SEQUENCE. It means a sequence performed right after another. 
  • WHILE. With a condition at the beginning, it is a loop. 
  • REPEAT-UNTIL. A loop with a condition at the bottom. 
  • FOR. Additional way to enact looping. 
  • IF-THEN-ELSE. ​Directs an algorithms flow.​ 
  • CASE. A generalization of IF-THEN-ELSE. 

These basic commands are enough to write sufficient pseudocode, but some projects may require two additional commands. The first one is CALL, which is used to invoke a function. The other deals with code handling exceptions, so the command EXCEPTION, WHEN keywords might be used. 

Here’s an example of what a pseudocode snippet for a simple Python program that finds the larger of two numbers:

Tips for writing good pseudocode  

Pseudocode is meant to be easily understood by anyone who needs to understand the direction of your application build process. ​Some common practices include:​ 

  1. Capitalizing the initial word or main command (usually one of the parameters listed above). 
  1. Writing one statement per line. 
  1. Indenting to clarify a hierarchy (if there is one) and make your pseudocode easier to decipher. 
  1. Ending sections with the END keyword (ENDIF, ENDWHILE, etc.). 
  1. Making programming language statements independent. 
  1. Naming the problem domain. In other words, try to be specific and avoid vagueness. 
  1. Keeping it simple, to the point, and easy to read. 

Get started with pseudocode 

To recap, pseudocode stands out as a powerful tool for several reasons. It’s English-like format makes it clear and accessible across a wide variety of audiences. Writing pseudocode comes with no associated costs or additional expenses to a tech team — in fact, it accelerates and streamlines the application building phase. Above all, pseudocode allows for error correction before any actual code is written, contributing to a more robust development process.

I know some might think it’s boring, but personally, I think it’s perfect for creating a stylish and sophisticated look. This color scheme would be great for modern office decor or for a minimalistic business website.

When you’re working with monochromatic color palettes, you might feel like having five colors is too much, but don’t worry, I included them all so you have plenty of options! Minimalistic designs usually only need a couple of colors, but I thought it would be helpful to give you a larger color palette so you can easily experiment and see what looks best. Let’s get creative!

Top 20 Spring Interview Questions (Plus Answers) to Review for Your Interview 

If you’re interviewing for a job that uses the Java framework Spring, you’ll likely face questions about its utility and related concepts — so you’ll definitely want to prepare ahead of time. Here’s a quick list of some of the most common Spring interview questions and tips on how to answer them.

1. How would you explain the Spring framework? 

Spring is an open-source Java framework you can use to build websites, apps, and cloud-based services. It provides a basis of reusable code to make it easier to create a Java app or website from scratch. 

2. When would you choose to use Spring? 

Spring is useful when building web applications that are designed to perform a particular function. Instead of having to write the code that makes these functions possible, Spring pre-loads them for easy re-use. Outside of web development, Spring can also be used for testing and data management. 

3. What are GET requests in Spring? 

A GET request is an HTTP request used to retrieve information from a server. 

4. What are POST requests in Spring? 

Similar to GET requests, a POST request is an HTTP request used to add information to a server.

5. What are Spring Projects? 

Spring Projects are sub-frameworks within Spring that you can use to accomplish various tasks. Some of the most common include: 

  • Spring Data: Enables access to various databases. 
  • Spring Cloud: Commonly used to build microservices. 
  • Spring Shell: Makes it easier to create REST applications. 

There are several sub-projects in Spring, including core, web, JDBC, and ORM integration. 

6. What is a configuration file? 

In Spring, a configuration file is an XML file that describes how the classes created in a Spring project should be configured and where they can be used. 

7. What is a REST API? 

REST (Representational State Transfer) is a set of standards for computer systems to communicate with each other via the web. A REST API is a set of functions that allows applications to communicate with RESTful web services. 

8. How does dependency injection work? 

Through dependency injection, you can spend less time writing code and simply describe how objects are created. The inversion of control (IOC) container then fills in the blanks to wire the components so they work properly. Together, these two components act as the foundation for many of the features you can put into the apps you build. 

9. What is Spring Boot, and when is it used? 

Spring Boot is an extension that you can add to the Spring framework that allows Spring beans and other key parts of the app you build to be autoconfigured, cutting down on the time it takes to develop the app and the overall amount of code you need to write. 

10. What are beans, and when are they used? 

A Spring bean is a term you can apply to any object that falls under the Spring Inversion of Control controller. Everything from wiring the component to its configuration and management of the bean is done by the IOC container based on the XML code or Java annotations. 

11. What are the supported bean scopes? 

There are five bean scopes, including singleton, prototype, request, session, and global session. However, request, session, and global session can only be used with Application Context containers. Singleton is used when there’s only one bean per IOC container, while prototype is suitable for multiple instances in the same IOC container. 

12. When would you use the persistence API? 

You can use the persistence API to update a database efficiently because it eliminates the need to write individual queries. 

13. What is the Spring H2 database? 

H2 is a Sprint Boot in-memory database that doesn’t persist. It’s mainly used for unit testing. 

14. What is Spring Data JPA used for? 

You can use Spring Data JPA to help integrate a database into the API you build using Spring. It’s an abstraction layer that makes it possible to cut down on the number of SQL queries you must write into the code yourself. 

15. What is a microservice architecture? 

A microservice architecture is an application architecture in which the app is designed as a collection of loosely-coupled services that work together. This architecture is more modular, so services are often easier to debug, maintain, test, and update. 

16. How do Spring transactions work? 

Spring transactions manage the changes that happen within the system. The basic code needed for these changes, such as starting or stopping a transaction, is already provided in Spring Boot. If you choose to use Spring without Spring Boot, you have to activate transaction management by annotating the application class, or transactions won’t track properly. 

17. What is Spring DAO? 

Spring DAO (data access object) is a built-in support system to make working with data access technologies simpler. 

18. What is Spring Security? 

Spring Security is a Spring Project that uses Java-based applications’ authentication methods to decrease security vulnerabilities. It helps protect apps from cyber attacks like clickjacking, and it’s easily customized for specific use cases. 

19. Explain the Spring MVC framework 

Spring Web MVC is the original web-based framework that is by default included in each Spring framework. MVC stands for model view controller, and each of these three — model, view, and controller — represents the three core elements Spring Web MVC uses to design apps. It also sets the protocol for how HTTP requests are handled within the Java apps you create. 

20. Explain reactive programming and how it works 

Reactive programming is an event-based system designed to work with the modern network by keeping latency low and workload throughput high. By accounting for back pressure flow control, the system stays elastic and better handles the decoupled elements that make up the system components.

When we think about people with strong leadership skills, certain titles may come to mind: managers, CEOs, presidents, professors, and other designations of expertise. But the truth is that anyone can be a leader, regardless of titles or positioning on an organizational chart.

Simply put, a leader is someone (anyone!) with the ability to encourage, empower, and enable people around them in order to achieve a shared goal.

What makes a good leader?

A good leader is one who moves a team closer to their goals. Beyond that, the traits and characteristics that define good leadership will vary depending on who you ask.

There are several different management styles, like authoritative, democratic, transformational, and collaborative. Perhaps you work best with an authoritative leader who makes decisions and tells you how to execute their plans; or maybe you prefer collaborative leadership, where everyone’s ideas are shared freely and considered equally.

Depending on the work environment, someone can become a good leader by leaning into a singular management style. The best leaders, however, will excel in several management styles and know when to employ each one in order to effectively motivate their team.

How to become a leader

There are four fundamental skills for effective leadership: communication, influence, learning agility, and self-awareness. If you practice these skills, you’ll be more prepared to step into a leadership position next time the opportunity arises.

Communication skills enable you to participate in clear dialogue with others across verbal, written, visual, and non-verbal mediums. As a leader, you may use your communication skills to give directions, share expectations, and actively listen to your teammates—all of which can be important to trust-building.

Influence is the ability to persuade others as you move toward your shared goals. This skill involves building and managing relationships. When you know your teammates well, you’ll be better equipped to motivate them in ways that encourage your desired outcomes.

Learning agility has to do with the way you seek, acknowledge, and apply new information. Acknowledging your own growth path and striving for continued development can enable you to expand your viewpoint as a leader and consider new perspectives and paths forward.

Self-awareness and the ability to reflect inward can enable you to show up as the leader you want to be. When you know how to motivate yourself, your biggest strengths, and your areas of weakness, you’re better equipped to navigate stressful situations or unexpected roadblocks.

Once you feel confident in these guiding principles, identify opportunities to practice being a leader. After all, you may not need a title to become a leader, but you do need people to lead. So, how do you plan to show up?

Here’s What You Need to Know About Port Forwarding

Port forwarding is a crucial concept that often comes into play when engaging in certain activities. Whether you’re setting up a game server to facilitate seamless gaming experiences, hosting your own website directly from your home, or ensuring remote access to security cameras while you’re away, port forwarding plays a pivotal role. 

​​​The examples above all involve setting up servers to be accessed from an outside source. Port forwarding establishes a connection between a router’s public IP address and the IP addresses and ports of services on a network. ​But what exactly are you doing when you ​configure​ your router? Why is port forwarding necessary? What else can it be used for?​  

We’ll cover all that below, but first, let’s look at how a router works and what these ports are.

How a router works 

A router connects the devices in a network by forwarding data packets between them. This allows devices to communicate with each other and the internet. The router tracks all the devices on the network by assigning a local IP address to each one. In the early days of the internet, a modem sufficed for single-device connections, but with the prevalence of multiple connected devices, routers became essential. 

When you browse the internet, router forwards your request to the modem. When the response comes back, the router routes it back to the right device using its assigned IP address. This forwarding is necessary because only by the router knows the local IP addresses assigned to each device in the network. Any data traveling to your device never ​gets​ there directly. It must be forwarded. 

What are ports? 

Local IP addresses are assigned to each device connected to a router. These IP addresses are only known by the router, unlike public IP addresses that are used by DNS servers to connect you to the right server or the one that your router uses to connect to the internet. 

But there is another number that works with the IP address that allows you to connect to the website: the port number. When you browse an insecure site, one that begins with http, you are connecting to port 80 on the server. When you visit a secure site, one that starts with https, you are connecting to port 443. 

Just like an IP address maps all the devices on a network so they can receive data meant for them, ports map all the services and applications on a computer so that data reaches the intended service. For data to be transferred across a network, both an IP address and a port are necessary. 

Here are the default port numbers of some common applications: 

  • 22. ​for ​Secure Shell (SSH)​.​ 
  • 80. ​for ​HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP)​.​ 
  • 110. ​for ​Post Office Protocol (POP3)​.​ 
  • 443. ​for ​HTTP with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)​.​ 
  • 3306. ​for ​MySQL database​.​ 
  • 5432. ​for ​PostgreSQL​.​ 

When you connect to any one of these services, you have to know the port number. There could be dozens of services running on the same machine or at the same IP address, and without the port, the device doesn’t know where you want the data you are sending it to go. 

What is port forwarding? 

Port forwarding is a map between a router’s public IP address and the IP addresses and ports of the services running on a network. It tells your router to relay data that it receives on a specific port to a specific port on a specific private IP address on the network. 

​​W​hen you set up a server to host your website at home, you have to add port forwarding rules to your router. You do this by finding the IP address of the computer running your website and setting a rule to forward all traffic on port 80 to that IP address. You can also specify the port you forward the data to. For example, if you run the website on port 8080, you can forward it to that port. 

Some applications only require one port to be forwarded, like the website example. Other applications use a whole range of ports for the many services they run, and you have to forward this range in the router to the device. 

Many consumer applications have a feature called UPnP, or Universal Plug and Play, which will automatically set up these rules in your router. For other applications, you will have to log in to the admin screen of your router and enter the port forwarding rules manually. 

Why is port forwarding important? 

Your router is designed to let you connect to any service on the internet. It routes your data to the internet with the IP address and the port and allows the router on the other end of the connection to handle the details of connecting to the right server and service. When you get a response, the router knows you made the request and routes it back to you. 

But what if you wanted to host a website on your home computer? People from outside your network would have to connect to your device on port 80 using an IP address only known to the router. You can set up a DNS server to point to your public IP address, but that only gets as far as your router. And your routerl has no clue what is going on. In fact, many are designed to block connections on certain ports with a firewall by default for security. 

Port forwarding with TCP compared to UDP 

​​There are also two types of ports that you can forward: ​​​ 

  • ​​​Transfer Control Protocol, or ​TCP​.​​ 
  • ​​​​User Datagram Protocol, or ​​UDP. ​     ​​ 

​​​Both of these​ protocols run on top of the I​nternet​ ​P​rotocol. The choice between TCP and UDP for port forwarding depends on the specific requirements of the service or application being used. When you are forwarding a port number, it’s also important to specify the type of port you are forwarding. ​ 

TCP is the most common protocol on the internet. It’s the one we use to browse websites, and it guarantees the delivery of data. Every packet of data sent to a recipient is acknowledged by the recipient so the data can be put back together reliably. 

UDP doesn’t care about ​acknowledgements​. It just sends the data out and doesn’t worry about any missing data. This allows the data to stream to the device faster because it doesn’t have to go through all the back-and-forth communication that TCP does. And streaming is one of the main things UDP is used for, both for videos and video games. 

What else is port forwarding used for? 

​​​P​ort forwarding is necessary whenever a device outside a network must connect to a service or application running on a device in the network. Its application extends to various scenarios, like facilitating remote desktop access to your home desktop from a different location, directing traffic to your server within the network when running a public website, and hosting a VPN to enable remote internet browsing using your home network’s IP address. In these instances, port forwarding is the mechanism that ensures seamless and secure communication between devices across diverse network environments.​

All services you connect to on the internet not only have an IP address but also a port number. Both are necessary to make sure data gets to where it is going. Port forwarding allows communication to get to the right device and application on a private network by mapping a router’s public IP to ports on devices running in the network.
