Coursera, UNDP, and MBRF Launch FutureSkills4All Initiative to Prepare Citizens across Arab States for Digital Economy

By: Jeff Maggioncalda, CEO of Coursera

Today, we are excited to announce that Coursera has partnered with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation (MBRF) to launch the FutureSkills4All initiative. This transformative program will provide scholarships for upskilling and reskilling thousands of citizens across the Arab States region, with the aim to boost their employability for digital jobs that will drive economic growth in the region.

The skills required in today’s job market are changing faster than ever before, largely due to the accelerated rate of digital transformation and advancements in AI. The WEF Future of Jobs Report 2023 found that while more than 60% of workers will need retraining by 2027, only half of these workers currently have access to adequate training opportunities.

“Skills development to meet the challenges of the 21st century requires robust collaboration and innovation. The FutureSkills4All initiative that we are launching today will shape a future where everyone has equal and easy access to quality continuing education and skills development,” said Abdallah Al Dardari, Assistant Secretary-General, Assistant Administrator and Director of the Regional Bureau for Arab States at UNDP. “We are confident that this initiative will pave the way for thousands of people to seize the opportunities of tomorrow and boost our pursuit of the vision of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the Arab States region.”

The one-year pilot program aims to provide thousands of people with the opportunity to develop in-demand and career-relevant skills, creating a more flexible and resilient workforce. In its initial phase, it will be available to 5,500 Arab States citizens in nine countries, including Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and the United Arab Emirates. It is open to recent graduates, entrepreneurs, and job seekers, with a specific focus on individuals in underserved and vulnerable communities. The program also aims to assist micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, as well as public institutions, in improving their employees’ skills.

“Partnerships like these reflect the United Arab Emirates’ vision of progress and innovation, empowering individuals with the knowledge and skills they need for the future. Together, we aim to foster an environment where every individual can thrive in the digital age,” said H.E. Jamal Bin Huwaireb, CEO of MBRF. “Launching this initiative with UNDP and Coursera not only underscores the commitment of our nation to the development of the Arab States region but also to global cooperation and knowledge exchange.

We’re proud to partner with UNDP and MBRF to equip thousands of citizens across the Arab States region with the in-demand skills and credentials needed to participate in the digital economy. The partnership also serves as an ideal blueprint for other regions to expedite job-creation, enhance employability, and advance workforce modernization.

Word of the Day: griot

Word of the Day: griot

The word griot has appeared in 25 articles on NYTimes.com in the past year, including on June 2 in “For Her New Play, Tori Sampson Revisited Her ‘Black Power Household’” by Naveen Kumar:

The narrator of “This Land Was Made,” the playwright Tori Sampson’s speculative account of the Black Panther Party’s powder-keg origins, is an aspiring writer named Sassy. “Consider me your time-traveling griot,” she tells the audience with wry buoyancy, evoking the West African tradition of storytellers who propagated endangered legacies.

The play, which opens on Sunday at the Vineyard Theater in Manhattan, is an act of oral history rooted in Sampson’s personal connection to the political awakening at its center. “Sassy is not me,” Sampson made clear during a recent interview off the courtyard of the Marlton Hotel, a short walk from the theater.

Can you correctly use the word griot in a sentence?

Digital Marketing Strategies for Small Businesses

Digital Marketing Strategies for Small Businesses

We live in a fast-paced and digitally advanced era. Every day, millions of people around the world use the internet for all sorts of things. The world has truly gone digital – from the way people shop, make friends, find new jobs, and learn. And the same goes for business. Digital marketing is a growing strategy big and small businesses can use to gain new audiences. However, to succeed in the digital realm, small businesses must utilise effective online marketing strategies tailored to their specific needs and resources. In this article, we’ll explore some key digital marketing techniques that can help small businesses thrive online.

What is Digital Marketing?

Digital marketing is another term for online marketing. It’s the digital channels individuals and companies use to promote and advertise their products and services to customers. These channels include websites, mobile apps, emails, social media, and search engines.

The Benefits of Digital Marketing for Small Businesses

Small businesses face both challenges and opportunities in reaching their target audience. The beauty of digital media is that it allows small businesses to compete on an even playing field with larger companies. Digital marketing offers numerous benefits to small businesses.

  • Cost-effective: Startups with small marketing budgets can compete with larger businesses without breaking the bank. You don’t have to have a big team with pro graphic designers on staff or copywriters with years of experience under their belt. With a few tutorials on platforms like Canva or using free writing and editing tools like ChatGPT, and HemingwayApp, you can create catchy content.
  • Targeting: Digital marketing offers precise targeting options that ensure that marketing efforts are directed toward the most relevant and potentially interested customers.
  • Analytics: A big part of any marketing campaign, traditional or digital, is knowing the numbers behind the campaigns. Tools like Google Analytics help you monitor web traffic, conversion rates, and user behaviour. These analytics let you know if your strategies are working, and the insights allow small businesses to make decisions based on real-time data and re-strategise to get better results.
  • Direct engagement: Another benefit of digital marketing is that it nurtures and creates opportunities to have direct engagement with customers. Social media platforms and email marketing help companies build lasting relationships and enhance brand loyalty.
  • Flexible: The flexibility and scalability of digital marketing allow small businesses to adapt and respond quickly to market trends, conditions, hot topics, and customer preferences.

These benefits help small businesses keep their fingers on the pulse of what their customers want, are talking about, and, ultimately, how to better service their needs.

How to Use Digital Marketing Strategies to Expand and Grow Your Business

Digital marketing is vital for enlarging small businesses and increasing their brand awareness. Here are some key tips to take you from novice to expert digital marketer and your business from a corner shop to a global powerhouse.

Create a solid online presence

Establishing a strong online presence is key to any digital marketing strategy. This means having a user-friendly website that is optimised for search engines (SEO), which means you improve the quality and quantity of your website visitors for search engines. A well-designed website not only enhances your brand image but also ensures that potential customers can easily find and navigate your site. You can go one step further and improve all your business profiles on the social media platforms such as Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

Tip: Maintain an active presence on these platforms by posting regular, high-quality content and engaging with your audience and other pages. This helps you build relationships with your audience and build a community around your brand.

Content Marketing

Content is king.” This is the golden ticket in digital marketing. Small businesses can just as well as larger companies, use content marketing to attract and retain customers. The secret is in the content. Start a blog on your website and create valuable, informative, and engaging content that speaks to your audience’s needs and interests. You can also create catchy content on your different social media platforms. This content can include articles, videos, infographics, and more. Once you have got a rhythm going and a great content calendar set, you can consider guest posting on industry-related websites or collaborating with influencers to expand your reach.

Tip: Consistently produce high-quality content, and you can position yourself as an authority in your niche and gain the trust of your target audience.

Email Marketing

Email marketing is a tried, trusted and cost-effective way to connect with your audience and nurture possible leads. Building an email list lets you send targeted communication, promotions, and updates directly to your subscribers. You need to ensure that your emails are personalised and provide real value to recipients. Utilise the automation solutions that are available to help you organise your email marketing efforts. These let you categorise your audience, send automated responses, and monitor the effectiveness of your campaign.

Tip: Always provide a simple way for users to opt out if they want, and keep the rules governing email marketing in mind.

Socia Media Marketing

Social media platforms offer a treasure house for small businesses to engage with their audience. Take time to plan and develop a social media strategy that aligns with your brand’s goals and target audience. Share relevant content, run contests, and respond to comments and messages in a timely. If you have extra marketing spend available, you can direct these to paid advertising on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. You can set your own budget and reach a larger audience. These platforms offer many targeting options and allow you to showcase your products or services to your followers and visitors to your page who are most likely to be interested.

Tip: Use your analytics to help you target your paid advertising for better results.

Online Advertising

Online advertising, including pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, can provide an immediate boost to your digital marketing efforts. Google Ads is a popular platform that allows you to bid on keywords relevant to your business. When users search for those keywords, your ads appear at the top of the search results.

Tip: If you can, consider display advertising and retargeting campaigns to keep your brand in front of potential customers who have visited your website but didn’t make a purchase.

Small businesses can thrive in the digital landscape by implementing effective digital marketing strategies. A strong online presence, content marketing, email marketing, social media marketing, online advertising, and data analysis are key components of a successful digital marketing strategy for small businesses. By consistently adapting and optimising these strategies, small businesses can connect with their target audience, drive growth, and remain competitive in today’s digital age.

How Much Do You Know About Albania?

How Much Do You Know About Albania?

Can you find Albania on a map? What else do you know about this Southeastern European nation with almost three million people?

Is It Time to Get Rid of Timed Tests?

0
Is It Time to Get Rid of Timed Tests?

Have you ever had to take a timed test, such as the SAT, the ACT, a pop quiz or a final exam? If so, what was the experience like? Did you worry about running out of time to complete all the questions? Did the stress distract you and cause you to make mistakes? Or did the time constraint not affect you? Did you finish the exam?

Do you think that students should be allowed to take as much time as they need on tests?

A few years ago, I started asking lecture halls filled with students to raise their hands if they had run out of time on the SAT. In each room, nearly every hand went up. I was surprised, but I shouldn’t have been.

For decades, educators have seen speed as a marker of aptitude or mastery, forcing students to scramble to finish tests. But a race against the clock doesn’t measure knowledge or intelligence. It assesses the much narrower skill of how well students reason under stress. As a result, timed tests underestimate the capabilities of countless students.

New evidence shows that although smarter people are faster at solving easy problems, they’re actually slower to finish difficult ones. They’re well aware that haste makes waste, and they don’t want to sacrifice accuracy for speed. You wouldn’t want a surgeon who rushes through a craniectomy, or an accountant who dashes through your taxes. Even for the many jobs in which people are judged on speed, there’s no evidence that doing algebra under time pressure is useful preparation. Although it pays to be quick, it also pays to be determined, disciplined and dependable.

Strangely, though, the tests that define students’ grades and help determine their educational and professional fates are rarely designed for deliberation. They evaluate students as if they’re applying to join a bomb squad or appear on “Jeopardy.” Time pressure rewards students who think fast and shallow — and punishes those who think slow and deep.

One fall, one of our daughters was pleasantly surprised by her grade on a math midterm. Despite being the longest and hardest test of the semester, it was her highest score. At first we were puzzled: She hadn’t changed her study habits or made a quantum leap in understanding. Then we learned that it was the first test where she didn’t feel pressed for time. Her teacher had allowed more time per question than usual.

On math tests, one of the few skills in which boys consistently outperform girls is mental rotation — turning 3-D shapes in their minds. But gender differences vary dramatically based on time pressure. Across several dozen studies, the more time students had to finish tests, the smaller the female disadvantage became. Shifting from short time limits to no time limits — or even just allowing more than 30 seconds per question — was enough to cut the gender gap in half.

It’s well known that the “girls can’t do math” stereotype can cause female students to underperform on math tests. The fear of confirming the stereotype can lead to test anxiety, draining working memory and disrupting cognitive processing. What we’ve overlooked is that time pressure can exacerbate these effects. When girls are distracted by doubts about their abilities, it takes them longer to finish problems. Having to rush leaves them more prone to choosing suboptimal strategies — and to possibly making mistakes. Even if they’re not anxious, female students tend to work more methodically than male students. When they have more time, they can rethink their approaches and double-check their answers. They also become more comfortable making educated guesses.

I tried this out with our daughter on practice tests at home. She’s an honors math student, but when she was under time pressure, she made distracted mistakes like plugging in the wrong formula on relatively easy algebra problems. It was the math version of a typo, and we ended up coining a term for it: a matho. But when there was no time limit, she excelled on difficult algebra problems — and mental rotation, too.

Time pressure doesn’t just underrate the math abilities of girls and young women. Having to hurry can obscure the abilities of anyone who has reason to worry. That might include boys who are expected to underperform in reading, immigrants who are doubted on verbal aptitude and Black students who face a host of questions about their intellect. It also includes students with learning difficulties such as dyslexia and ADHD — or mental health conditions, physical disabilities and sensory impairments.

A common solution to this problem is for schools to offer extended time to accommodate students with disabilities. But lately, this has created an accommodations arms race as parents and students try to game the system to get diagnosed with a learning difficulty or health condition. Why not give everyone enough time to complete the test?

Word of the Day: buoyancy

Word of the Day: buoyancy

The word buoyancy has appeared in 33 articles on NYTimes.com in the past year, including on March 31 in “From Flip-Flops to the Final Four, Georgia Amoore Commands the Court” by Remy Tumin:

Amoore, from Ballarat, Australia, has become a breakout star in the N.C.A.A. tournament, dominating the 3-point line and dancing across the court with a buoyancy and rhythm distinctly her own.

“She came here, and immediately I knew we had something special,” Virginia Tech Coach Kenny Brooks said on Thursday. “Her demeanor is one of confidence. The kids will follow her. She’s like the Pied Piper. If she said, ‘Let’s do this,’ the kids will do it. She’s the funniest kid on the team. She’s the most quick-witted kid on the team. And she’s our leader.”

How to actually write your resume, part two

0
How to actually write your resume, part two

Hi there!

This is it: the final resume stretch.

To recap our journey so far, you’ve contemplated your career goals, identified your key job skills, chosen your resume type, and started writing your resume. Today, we’re going to talk through more resume sections that you may want to include: education, certifications, hobbies, volunteer work, and skills.

Like last week, we’re covering a lot of ground, so let’s dig in.

Here’s part two of your resume breakdown, section-by-section.

Education

Your education section can be concise. All you need to include is your institution name and the degree you earned. If it’s relevant to your career path, you can also include your field of study. If a job requires a degree, these pieces of information are usually enough to show that you meet that requirement.

There’s generally no need to include your graduation year. Graduation year is one way unconscious bias (or ageism) can sneak into the application process, so it’s becoming more common for applicants to leave this information off.

An exception to this guideline is if you are a recent or soon-to-be graduate. In this case, including your graduation date or anticipated graduation date can help contextualize your experience. To demonstrate mastery of your subject matter, you can also include your GPA, as well as honors, achievements, relevant coursework, and extracurricular activities.

Certifications and certificates

Some roles require that job candidates have certain certifications—this tends to be common among advanced cybersecurity positions, for example—but outside of these instances, including your certifications or professional certificates on your resume can be one more way to demonstrate that you have the job skills necessary to succeed in a role. In this section, include the certification name, awarding institution, expiration date (if applicable), and skills associated with earning this certificate.

Career change tip: Certificates can be a great way to add resume keywords that you may not be able to include in your work experience section. For example, if you’re aiming to shift from an administrative support role into a decision-making role, you may take Wharton’s Business Analytics Specialization to show that you understand how to use data to drive positive business results. (Perhaps you’ll even include your capstone project in a portfolio!)

Hobbies and volunteer work

Sections for hobbies and volunteer work aren’t must-haves for every resume, but they can be beneficial if you use them strategically. Because these are less common, you have some freedom in the way you format them; a list of bullet points will typically suffice. The important thing, as always, is to tie the items in this section back to the role you want to get.

Skills

Some people like to add a designated skills section in order to incorporate the resume keywords that they suspect the applicant tracking systems are looking for—but throughout your journey in this series, you’ve already built your entire resume around your most desirable skills. At this point, your skills section will be more of a storytelling mechanism than a necessary strategic element, so you get to decide whether this section is worth the real estate on your page.

Typically formatted as a bulleted list of skills, you can place this section either toward the top of your resume (underneath your objective or summary statement) or at the bottom. At the top, this section will offer a preview of what recruiters and hiring managers can expect to see on your resume, and at the bottom, it will sum up everything you shared above. This repetition can help reinforce the skills you most want to be known for during this hiring process.

Now for some final quick tips:

  • Double-check that your margins are set to 1-inch all around and make sure your font size and spacing is easy to read.
  • Revisit your job skills list and confirm that you’ve included the most important skills for your desired role.
  • Edit your resume line-by-line to check your spelling and grammar.

Once you feel satisfied, give your document one final re-read from top to bottom. Take a moment to reflect on the series of accomplishments and gains that make up your career journey so far, and to feel proud of everything you’ve done. Imagine what you’ll be able to do next.

That’s a wrap on our resume writing series. To keep exploring, check out our resume writing guide and LinkedIn profile tips, or consider enrolling in SUNY Online’s How to Write a Resume course, which takes about five hours to complete. As always, feel free to drop any other resume questions you have in the comments below.

We’ll be back next week with something new. See you then.

What Are the Beige Flags in Your Relationship?

0
What Are the Beige Flags in Your Relationship?

Dunking Oreos into water. Posting only selfies on Instagram. Reciting random historical facts at the drop of a hat.

Deal breakers? Quirky and endearing? Benign, but baffling?

In “What Is a ‘Beige Flag’?” Callie Holtermann writes about the emergence of a new dating term to describe the kinds of odd traits of our romantic partners:

To sort through the chaos of modern dating, some taxonomically-minded singles apply a color-coded system to potential partners. Red flags are behaviors to avoid (deceit, poor dental hygiene). Green flags are go-ahead signs (honesty, owning floss).

So what is a beige flag?

According to the TikTok users who have latched on to the term in the past month, a beige flag is an odd trait in a romantic prospect that is not quite a deal breaker, but not exactly a plus, either.

Dunking Oreos in water instead of milk is a beige flag. So is turning on caps lock to type the first letter of every sentence, or maintaining a Lego obsession into adulthood, or being afraid of astronauts.

Benign but baffling, they are the kinds of things that might come up in a gentle roast. As one user put it, a beige flag makes a potential partner or a partner pause and say, “Huh?” for a few seconds before carrying on with the relationship.

“Everyone has their beige flags,” said Marisa Bertani, 29, an actor in Los Angeles. For example, her girlfriend of over a year moves her couch to a different spot in her apartment roughly every two weeks. Ms. Bertani said she did not mind the habit, but she did not understand it, either. “I’ve never met anyone in my life that can think of so many ways to rearrange a living room,” she said.

She posted a video about her partner’s quirks on TikTok, where the hashtag #beigeflag has more than half a billion views. The videos, which are often set to a schmaltzy saxophone soundtrack, function as a kind of humblebrag: They appear self-effacing while still serving as a flex of the poster’s relationship status.

Katie Chung, 17, responded to the TikTok trend, and the value of embracing beige flags, in a winning submission to our Summer Reading Contest:

What is a “beige flag?” One person I dated had a knack for reciting random historical facts at the drop of a hat; another had a penchant for organizing their bookshelf by the color of the spines rather than the author’s name. These traits were neither deal breakers nor instant attractions, but rather curious aspects that added individuality to their character: “beige flags.”

What fascinates me most about beige flags is their subjectivity. What may be an endearing quirk to one person could be utterly repellent to another. As I ponder beige flag TikToks and their comment sections, I witness a microcosm of the world’s opinions converging, showcasing the vast spectrum of human perspectives.

But the significance of beige flags extends beyond social media trends. It prompts us to reconsider the rigid expectations we impose on potential partners. In our quest for the perfect match, we tend to focus on red flags, fearing the pitfalls of poor compatibility. But in doing so, we overlook the beauty of embracing our partners’ quirks — the very things that make them unique.

Embracing beige flags means acknowledging that perfection is an elusive ideal, and relationships thrive on cherishing our differences. In an age marked by polarization and categorizing people as good or bad, welcoming the in-between becomes an effective tool for encouraging empathy; if we can extend this acceptance to other aspects of our lives, we can begin fostering a more compassionate society.

Students, read the rest of Ms. Holtermann’s article and then tell us:

  • What’s your reaction to the latest shade of flag in the sprawling lexicon of dating terms? Do you think it’s a helpful term? What are your relationship beige flags?

  • What about red flags (behaviors to avoid) and green flags (go-ahead signs)? Are there any that you feel strongly about?

  • Kimberly Moffit, a therapist in Toronto who specializes in dating and relationships, says that what is adorable to one person will almost certainly be repellent to someone else. Do you agree?

  • Our contest winner, Katie Chung, argues for the value of beige flags beyond social media trends: We should be careful not to overlook the beauty of embracing our partners’ quirks — the very things that make them unique. Does the quest for the perfect match keep us from cherishing our differences? Do you think that embracing beige flags can be an “effective tool for encouraging empathy?” Why, or why not?
