Ancient Arrow

A recent Times article reports:

Espen Finstad was trudging through mud in the Jotunheimen mountains of eastern Norway this month when he happened upon a wooden arrow, bound with a pointed tip made of quartzite. Complete with feathers, it was so well-preserved that it looked as if it could have been lost just recently.

But Mr. Finstad, a glacial archaeologist for the county of Innlandet, knew better. By his estimate, the arrow is probably about 3,000 years old.

The find is among thousands of artifacts and remains that have emerged from melting ice in recent years, as climate change thaws permafrost and glaciers around the world.

We have so many blogs about retrieval practice. In fact, it is the most common tag we use on our blog. If you’re new to this conversation, you can find some summary information about the benefits of retrieval practice here and some additional resources here. In short, there is a wealth of research demonstrating that retrieving information helps individuals retain information better than restudying.

But not always…

One thing that we try to emphasize is that there are no silver bullets. It’s so important to understand the mechanisms that underlie any strategy we’re recommending because when you go to apply it the why it works becomes super important. No strategy works all the time. Not even retrieval practice. (You can see other times we’ve talked about that fact here and here.

Today I want to share a new Open Access article (so you can go read it for yourself if you’d like!) that *spoiler alert! found a situation in which restudying was actually better for retention than retrieval (1).

This study used Swahili-English word pairs for their materials. This is a pretty common strategy when we’re trying to figure out basic mechanisms. Most of our participants don’t have a background in Swahili so it allows us to see how they learn something from scratch instead of worrying about people who might have already known something when the experiment began. Still, there are some limitations here because most of us do not ask our students to memorize foreign language vocab pairs exclusively or at all.

In this study, there were a few experiments. I’m just going to tell you about the first one here. In the first experiment, people were recruited online and participated in five sessions. During the first session, they studied the 40 word pairs. Then on Days 3, 5, and 7 they were given the words in different ways. Some of the word pairs were restudied, but for others the Swahili word was presented and students either just thought about or wrote down the English pair before being shown the correct answer. They labeled these Restudy, Covert Retrieval, and Overt Retrieval. After each restudied word, participants were asked, “Would you have remembered the correct translation?” and rated it out of 100. For the Retrieval groups they were asked how close they were to the correct answer (again, out of 100).

On Day 9, everyone took a final test. And the strangest thing happened…

What Students Are Saying About Barbie

The dolls ‘used to lack diversity quite a bit.’

My overall view of Barbie dolls is that it used to lack diversity quite a bit, which is something that’s very important to me, however in recent years they have gotten much better in terms of diversifying their toys. I can understand why many people might have a negative view of Barbie, and why they believe that she isn’t the best role model for young girls. The doll has mainly had one image for the past few decades and that has been a white woman with blonde hair and blue eyes. Things like this can help push that white is the norm in the USA, especially to girls of color that enjoy playing with Barbies. There was a time when you could walk into a store and only see dolls that looked the exact same, which was white, blonde, and skinny. However I feel like more progress is being made as time goes on. Despite all of this I feel that the movie handled a lot of these issues in a pretty good way.

‘I would have loved to see Barbies who … weren’t all that into pink.’

Personally, when the Barbie movie came out, I had never been interested in the sort of products the brand offered nor was the movie something I was excited about watching. However, when a friend of mine insisted we should go see the film, I begrudgingly said yes and fished to grab my one pink button-up out of my closet. Wow! I was really pleasantly surprised by this movie! Though Barbie has a very light tone, it managed to discuss important issues in a way that definitely made me think. Part of the movie is the fact that it should make you uncomfortable, which forces you to take a good look at the real world. Additionally, the character Alan was very dear to me because he symbolized the experience of not fitting into the “Barbie” or “Ken” category. However, I do feel that the film oversimplified the varied experiences of women. Stereotypical Barbie was just that: stereotypical. I would have loved to see Barbies who didn’t necessarily have high heels and dresses, weren’t all that into pink, and didn’t necessarily partner up with a Ken. Overall, while the movie certainly isn’t perfect, it was definitely something I will keep watching again and again.

‘Without Barbie, I wouldn’t value my culture as much as I do today.’

As a child, my bedroom floor was almost always haphazardly covered by a plethora of Barbies. I even remember begging my parents to go to Toys “R” Us only to browse the Barbie aisle. I was obsessed with the idea of having a “perfect” toy. Something about her ubiquitous, embellished features captivated me. Eventually, however, this admiration became envy. Having a reminder of what was “perfect” — only to look back at the mirror and find no similarities — was incredibly dispiriting. Living as an Asian immigrant, I always strived to look like what was most represented — being a white, skinny girl — which I was neither. How could I begin loving myself if the media didn’t? Thus, I started to hate Barbie. The designated Barbie pile I once had was trashed. I assimilated into American culture, disregarding my mother tongue. Rejected my food, my words, and my culture. Gradually though, I began appreciating my identity and ethnic features. It wasn’t a magical change. I had to learn my culture again as if it was an old hobby. I like to think of Barbie as a hallmark. It is representative of the pain I felt, so displaced in a world where I felt like I didn’t belong. But it also represents the progress and change I have gone through. Without Barbie, I wouldn’t value my culture as much as I do today. I wouldn’t cherish my features as much as I do today either. And I love Barbie for that reason.

How Responsive Web Design Keeps Your Apps Consistent

Even before all the ubiquitous IoT tech we have today, websites needed to be able to adapt to various monitor sizes. Today, we have a wide range of devices that connect to the web — like smartphones, tablets, laptops, watches, and refrigerators. 

Luckily, web developers don’t need to build unique apps for every single device. (Can you imagine the cost? It’d be unsustainable.) Instead, they use responsive web design to provide their users with a consistent, seamless experience across all of their devices. 

We take a closer look at responsiveness in our free course Learn CSS: Responsive Design — but here’s a quick breakdown.

What is responsive design? 

Responsive design ensures a website can adapt to users whether they’re viewing content on a phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop, through Cascading Style Sheets or CSS. In CSS, you use various settings to serve different styles depending on the user’s device. 

Responsive design means the website is automatically configured for the device it’s being viewed on. The fonts, images, and other elements are scaled to make the best use of the screen. 

Why responsive design matters 

Responsive design matters for both users and web developers. For users, it ensures a smooth experience regardless of what device you use to view a website. For developers, it allows you to make one website that users can view on multiple devices rather than just a computer — which is crucial because most web traffic comes from mobile devices. 

Instead of building responsive web apps, some people use redirects to point users to the appropriate version of the website for their device. But this option is clunky and slow and can potentially impact the user experience. It’s also more work for the developers, so creating one well-designed website is a better experience for everyone. 

Why learn responsive design 

If you want to become a web developer, or even just build efficient websites, you’ll need to provide a smooth experience for every device. The design should translate across multiple screen sizes and continue to look visually appealing. 

How HTML and CSS are used in responsive design 

Responsive design uses HTML (HyperText Markup Language) and CSS. HTML determines the content and structure of a web page, while CSS controls how the HTML is designed and displayed. 

With responsive design, each device receives the same HTML. CSS is what alters the appearance of the page. It adjusts the page to conform to the screen in use. 

Responsive images 

One way to see how HTML and CSS work together for responsive website design is by looking at images. For example, you might add an image to a website with the following  HTML:

You can also set a class that you can customize with CSS:

You include CSS as a separate stylesheet file. You can use CSS to manage the width of all images using the following:

img { 

width: 100%; 

height: auto; 

}

This means that the image will scale down when necessary to fit onto the screen, but it won’t scale up to larger than its original size. 

You can also control a specific class using the following syntax: 

. full-width-img { 

width: 100%; 

height: auto; 

}

Background images should also be responsive. One way to do this is by setting the background-size property to contain, meaning the background image will scale to fit the content area, but it will also keep its aspect ratio (original proportions). Here’s what it would look like using an animated image, image.gif

div { 

width: 100%; 

height: 400px; 

background-image: url(‘image.gif’); 

background-repeat: no-repeat; 

background-size: contain; 

border: 1px solid blue; 

}

Another option is to set the background size to 100% 100%, which stretches the background image to cover the content area. It looks like this: 

div { 

width: 100%; 

height: 400px; 

background-image: url(‘image.gif’); 

background-size: 100% 100%; 

border: 1px solid blue; 

}

You can also change the background size to cover, which will scale and keep the aspect ratio, but it may clip the image. 

Setting the viewport 

The viewport is the visible area of a web page. It will be larger on computer screens than tablets and smartphones. Developers can control the viewport by using an HTML tag. 

The example above sets the width of the page to follow the width of the device’s screen. And the initial-scale attribute sets the zoom level when the page is first loaded. 

Responsive grids 

Websites are typically designed using a grid, which divides the page into columns. Grids make it easier to place elements on a page and see how they relate to each other. A responsive grid is fluid, which means the elements can change and move based on the user’s viewport. 

One popular grid option is the Flexbox grid. It uses a 12-column layout in which each column is 8.33% of the layout. You can also build a responsive grid using CSS. If you want to learn more about responsive grids, check out our free course Learn CSS: Flexbox and Grids

Media queries 

Media queries, changes to CSS properties if certain conditions are met, are another cornerstone of responsive design. They allow you to add a breakpoint or threshold at which parts of the design will behave differently. For example, you might have a three-column layout on desktops but a one-column layout on smartphones. 

It’s common practice to design for mobile first and then scale up. Here’s what a media query would look like in that case: 

/* For mobile phones: */ 

[class*=”col-”] { 

width: 100%; 

} 

@media only screen and (min-width: 768 px) { 

/* For desktop: */ 

.col-1 {width: 8.33%;} 

.col-2 {width: 16.66%;}

You can also use media queries to change the layout of the page based on its orientation, as well as change fonts or hide elements depending on the screen size. 

Bootstrap 

Another option for responsive web design is using a framework like Bootstrap. A framework provides a foundation that you can personalize and build on. Bootstrap is a free, open-source, front-end framework built on HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It saves you the time of having to write all of the code yourself and includes a responsive grid, code for responsive images, and code for other elements like navigation bars. 

Bootstrap also has extensive documentation and an enthusiastic community. You can also find Bootstrap templates, which simplify the responsive design process even more. 

Getting started in responsive design 

To learn responsive design, you need a solid grounding in the basics. First, you’ll need to know HTML. Our Learn HTML course is a beginner-friendly course that introduces you to common HTML tags and how to create tables and forms. 

Once you’ve mastered HTML, it’s time to add in CSS. Our Learn CSS course teaches you visual CSS rules, the Box Model, CSS rules for display and positioning, and colors and fonts. 

After you’ve learned HTML and CSS, you have several options. One is to continue building your CSS knowledge. 6. To learn more, read “What Is War to a Grieving Child?” Mona El-Naggar, Jonah M. Kessel and Alexander Stockton, the filmmakers, write:

Kids didn’t start the war in Ukraine. They aren’t fighting it. They won’t be responsible for ending it. They have had little say in the matter, yet they have suffered deeply.

In the Opinion video above, we hear from Ukrainian children who have lost a parent during the conflict. A team from Opinion Video met them in western Ukraine, at a two-week retreat intended to give grieving kids the space and support to confront their pain and begin to heal.

The program, called Wonder Camp, is part of a support mission in Ukraine by an international organization, Children of Heroes Charity Fund.

“These kids are not part of this war, but they are casualties,” said Brice Espino, the chief executive of Children of Heroes, which provided the funding for the camp and gathered the participants. (Ahead Foundation, a Ukrainian group, supplied the camp’s personnel and ran the program.)

Children of Heroes is supporting more than 5,000 Ukrainian children who have lost a parent in the war. The group provides them with educational, housing, legal and psychological support until they turn 18.

“All they want is a normal life,” Espino continued. “We want to remind them there is a bigger world outside of this.”

The children’s accounts in the video, and the emotional wounds they reveal, are moving and powerful testimonies to the horrors of war and the damage the conflict has inflicted on Ukraine’s most vulnerable — and most innocent — population.

What Is Object-Oriented Programming? 

Every programming language has its own syntax and features, and many of them also use different paradigms or styles of writing and organizing code. 

The most common programming paradigms are procedural, functional, and object-oriented programming. Object-oriented is the most popular, and the one most often taught in programming courses.  

Object-oriented programming is a software development approach that focuses on defining and sculpting named classes as entities with attributes and behaviors. One key benefit of object-oriented programming? It makes reusing and maintaining code easier. Ahead, we’ll break down what you need to know about object-oriented programming and the courses to take if you want to get started.

The building blocks of object-oriented programming 

The object-oriented programming paradigm uses the following building blocks to structure an application: 

Classes 

Classes are user-defined data types used as a blueprint or template for the objects a software program will use in its operation. Classes define the methods and attributes that each object created from them has. Most object-oriented programming languages use classes, though some (like Go, for example) do not. 

Modern JavaScript has classes now, but it didn’t originally. It first used a similar concept called prototypes. 

Here’s an example class in JavaScript:

class Cat { 

    constructor(name, type) { 

        this.name = name; 

        this.type = type; 

    } 

    getTag() { 

        console.log(`Hi, my name is ${this.name} and I am a ${this.type}.`); 

    } 

    speak() { 

        console.log('meow'); 

     }  

}

Objects 

In an object-oriented language that uses classes, objects are instances of those classes created with specific data. To create an object with the Cat class above, we would use the following code:

const myCat = new Cat('Morris', 'Tabby');

When the myCat object is created, it calls the constructor method with the parameters we specify and sets the name and type attributes of the object. We get the following output when we call the methods we’ve defined above: 

​​​​​myCat.speak(); // Prints "meow" 

myCat.getTag(); // Prints "Hi, my name is Morris, and I am a Tabby."

Methods 

Methods are functions stated inside a class that define the behavior of the objects created from the class. They perform actions like returning information about the object or modifying the data contained in the object. The Cat class we created above has two methods: speak() and getTag()

Attributes 

Attributes are variables defined inside a class that describe what data the objects created from the class will contain. In our Cat class, we have two attributes: name and type. It’s common to set these attributes in the constructor of the class as we did above. 

The main principles of object-oriented programming 

There are four primary principles of object-oriented programming, including encapsulation, abstraction, inheritance, and polymorphism. 

Inheritance 

Inheritance allows a class to inherit the features of other classes. The original class is called the parent class, and the class inheriting the features is called the child class. Inheritance provides reusability. The child class can also add new attributes and methods. 

Inheritance is often used to create generic parent classes and child classes that have more specific functionality. Here’s an example using our Cat class as a parent class: 

class Tiger extends Cat { 

    huntGazelle() { 

        console.log('hunting');  

    }  

}

This new Tiger class has all the methods and attributes of the original Cat class but also has a huntGazelle() method.   

Encapsulation 

This principle means that all the important data and functionality of an object is contained within that object. Only select information that is needed outside of the object is exposed to the outside world. When an object is created from a class, the methods and attributes are encapsulated inside the object. Encapsulation also hides the implementation of this code inside the object. 

Encapsulation requires that you define some attributes and methods as public or private. “Public” dictates that the attributes and methods can be accessed, modified, or executed from the outside. “Private” limits access to use from inside the object. Attributes and methods can also be defined as protected. This means that classes that inherit from the parent class can also access these attributes and methods, just like the parent class. 

Encapsulation also adds a layer of security by preventing attributes from being changed or methods from being executed by the outside world, which can cause unintended data corruption. Here’s an example:

        // This is a private attribute 

        const #sound = 'meow'; 

    constructor(name, type) { 

        this.name = name; 

        this.type = type;  

    } 

    getTag() { 

        console.log(`Hi, my name is ${this.name} and I am a ${this.type}.`)  

    } 

    speak() { 

        console.log(this.#sound); 

    }  

}

The sound attribute is hidden from the outside world in this class. This ensures that the class can’t be modified by other code, like code to make the cat bark.

Abstraction 

Abstraction is a means for providing a higher-level interface for interacting with objects. It extends the encapsulation principle by making only key attributes visible to a user and hiding the remaining complexity. This suggests that the complexity of the actual object can be represented by a simple class with a limited number of methods you can execute or attributes you can access. 

One way to imagine the concept of abstraction is to think about driving a car. To make the car turn right, you only have to turn the steering wheel right. The driver doesn’t have to know how the tires, rack and pinion, or power steering pump works — they just turn the wheel. Having to manage all of those other things while driving the car would cause chaos and a lot of accidents. 

Polymorphism 

Polymorphism means objects can share behaviors and can take on more than one form. So far, we have created two classes: Cat and Tiger. If another part of our program has a random list of objects created from these classes, we know we can loop through them and call the speak() method on any of them.​ ​Because of polymorphism, we know that any of these objects contain that method. 

With inheritance, a child object can also override the functionality of the parent object. Remember when we created the Tiger class, but the tiger still meowed like a cat? We can fix that by creating the class like this instead: 

class Tiger extends Cat { 

    huntGazelle() { 

        console.log('hunting');  

    } 

    speak() { 

        console.log('roar');  

    }  

}

Here we simply override the speak() method of the parent Cat class, and now our tiger will roar. Inheritance is what allows methods and attributes to carry over, but polymorphism allows those elements to take another form in a new class. 

The benefits of object-oriented programming 

There are many reasons the object-oriented paradigm is the most popular programming paradigm. Here are some of the main benefits: 

  • You can represent complex objects with simple, reproducible classes. 
  • The same object you create in one object-oriented program can be reused in other software. 
  • You can use polymorphism to define class-specific behavior. 
  • By encapsulating all the information about an object within the object, object-oriented software is easy to debug.
  • Encapsulation protects data from being modified from unexpected events and actions. 

Which programming languages are object-oriented? 

Simula, which was developed in the 1960s, was the first object-oriented programming language and influenced many of the programming languages we have today. While some languages are either purely procedural or functional, most of the popular ones support the object-oriented programming style in some way. Here are some of those languages: 

  • Java is a general-purpose programming language used widely in enterprise development and is object-oriented. 
  • Python is a popular programming language used for a wide variety of tasks that supports object-oriented, procedural, and functional programming.
  • Ruby is what is called a “pure” object-oriented language where everything in a program is an object. 
  • JavaScript is an object-oriented language that used prototypes instead of classes in its earlier days. 
  • C++ was created as an extension of the C programming language and is designed to be object-oriented. 
  • C# is an object-oriented language developed by Microsoft to run either in the .NET framework or the cross-platform .NET Core framework. 
  • Go is an object-oriented programming language that doesn’t have classes. Instead, you build up objects using composition.

What’s Your Take on Beige Flags in Relationships?

Dunking Oreos into water. Posting only selfies on Instagram. Reciting random historical facts at the drop of a hat.

Deal breakers? Quirky and endearing? Benign, but baffling?

In “What Is a ‘Beige Flag’?” Callie Holtermann writes about the emergence of a new dating term to describe the kinds of odd traits of our romantic partners:

To sort through the chaos of modern dating, some taxonomically-minded singles apply a color-coded system to potential partners. Red flags are behaviors to avoid (deceit, poor dental hygiene). Green flags are go-ahead signs (honesty, owning floss).

So what is a beige flag?

According to the TikTok users who have latched on to the term in the past month, a beige flag is an odd trait in a romantic prospect that is not quite a deal breaker, but not exactly a plus, either.

Dunking Oreos in water instead of milk is a beige flag. So is turning on caps lock to type the first letter of every sentence, or maintaining a Lego obsession into adulthood, or being afraid of astronauts.

Benign but baffling, they are the kinds of things that might come up in a gentle roast. As one user put it, a beige flag makes a potential partner or a partner pause and say, “Huh?” for a few seconds before carrying on with the relationship.

“Everyone has their beige flags,” said Marisa Bertani, 29, an actor in Los Angeles. For example, her girlfriend of over a year moves her couch to a different spot in her apartment roughly every two weeks. Ms. Bertani said she did not mind the habit, but she did not understand it, either. “I’ve never met anyone in my life that can think of so many ways to rearrange a living room,” she said.

She posted a video about her partner’s quirks on TikTok, where the hashtag #beigeflag has more than half a billion views. The videos, which are often set to a schmaltzy saxophone soundtrack, function as a kind of humblebrag: They appear self-effacing while still serving as a flex of the poster’s relationship status.

What is a “beige flag?” One person I dated had a knack for reciting random historical facts at the drop of a hat; another had a penchant for organizing their bookshelf by the color of the spines rather than the author’s name. These traits were neither deal breakers nor instant attractions, but rather curious aspects that added individuality to their character: “beige flags.”

What fascinates me most about beige flags is their subjectivity. What may be an endearing quirk to one person could be utterly repellent to another. As I ponder beige flag TikToks and their comment sections, I witness a microcosm of the world’s opinions converging, showcasing the vast spectrum of human perspectives.

But the significance of beige flags extends beyond social media trends. It prompts us to reconsider the rigid expectations we impose on potential partners. In our quest for the perfect match, we tend to focus on red flags, fearing the pitfalls of poor compatibility. But in doing so, we overlook the beauty of embracing our partners’ quirks — the very things that make them unique.

Embracing beige flags means acknowledging that perfection is an elusive ideal, and relationships thrive on cherishing our differences. In an age marked by polarization and categorizing people as good or bad, welcoming the in-between becomes an effective tool for encouraging empathy; if we can extend this acceptance to other aspects of our lives, we can begin fostering a more compassionate society.

5S and Beyond 6S: Enhanced Workplace Safety and Efficiency

Most likely, you’ve heard of 5S. If so, you are aware that it is a technique for setting up a workspace to boost productivity and efficiency while minimising waste. It’s also one of the initial measures that many businesses take in their quest to become “lean.” If you didn’t already know that, you do now. In addition to helping a company become leaner, 5S can enhance workplace health and safety. Below, we’ll learn more about the 5S and/or 6S and how to apply them to make a workplace that is more orderly, effective, productive, and secure.

What is the 5S Programme?

To give you a general idea of what 5S is, here are a few definitions. It is a cyclical methodology that stands for Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardise, and Sustain. It is a lean thinking method used to achieve continuous improvement. The American Society for Quality (ASQ) defines 5S as “a methodology that results in a workplace that is clean, uncluttered, safe, and well organised to help reduce waste and optimise productivity”[i]. 5S is a system that emanates from Japanese industries and culture consisting of five concepts Seiri (sorting), Seiton (organising), Seiso (cleaning, shining), Seiketsu (sanitising, standardising) and Shitsuke (sustaining)[ii].

Examining the 5S in More Detail

What Constitutes a 5S? The 5S method consists of five steps or phases, each of which starts with the letter S, as you probably have guessed. Each “S” in 5S is the first letter of a Japanese word because it was invented in Japan. To the delight of English speakers, each of those Japanese terms has been translated into an English word that likewise starts with the letter “S”.

  1. Sort (Seiri): When you sort, you take away anything from the workspace that is no longer required for the present stage of production. This could imply that you place them somewhere for long-term storage or even that you discard them.
  2. Straighten (Seiton): Another name for putting everything in order. After the extra objects have been cleared out, arrange the remaining goods in the most advantageous arrangement. Put items in their proper places to make them accessible when needed and to aid with waste reduction and efficiency.
  3. Shine (Seiso): Another name for sanitising or sweeping. Clean up the workspace once all necessary items have been rearranged and superfluous items have been removed. Don’t do this just once. Instead, create a cleaning schedule for each day. Daily cleaning has the advantage of allowing you to check the workspace and equipment for wear and damage.
  4. Standardise (Seiketsu): After you’ve sorted, straightened, and shone, it’s time to standardise (Seiketsu). This entails determining best practices to maintain the status quo and developing standardised procedures to ensure that tasks are completed effectively. Sort, straighten, and polish should be included in people’s job descriptions in order to ensure consistency.
  5. Sustain (Shitsuke): The fifth and last component of 5S is to maintain the practice. To maintain the 5S technique and practices current and prevent things from getting out of hand once more, use signs, posters, meetings, and other forms of communication. If you don’t keep the 5S message fresh in their thoughts, individuals may have a tendency to revert to the old practices. Keep in mind that changing a company’s culture is not simple.

Adding Safety to 5S: Even if 5S has “built-in” safety advantages, the narrative is far from over. Including safety in 5S can be as easy as remembering to prioritise safety during each 5S phase. Over time, a new “S” has been added to the 5S system to generate 6S systems. The 6S methodology is a result of the addition of Safety to the 5S methodology. This is also known as lean 6S safety, lean 6S, 6S, or 5S+.

Examples of the 6thS Relevant to EHS

The word “safety” can also refer to a distinct phase that comes after “sort,” “straighten,” and “shine,” but before “standardise,” and “sustain.” When straightening, you can arrange things not only to maximise productivity but also with a focus on safety. Don’t just put measures in place to increase worker productivity. For instance, you can also think about safety/EHS issues like worker strain due to ergonomics. So, perform a separate round of safety inspections after sorting, straightening, and shining. Additionally, you can include EHS considerations in a cleaning checklist for employees to complete during the Shine phase.  Practically, you can ensure that toxic canisters are closed when cleaning and organising. Next, select Standardise and Sustain. Basically, it’s a good idea to include safety in each of the five Ss.

EHS is Still Beyond 5S for Big Conglomerates & Medium Scale Industries

It’s great to have safety when implementing the 5S programme but occupational health safety and environment is still a big area that needs specialised efforts as well in medium-sized and big companies. S5 and S6 make sense. There will be fewer risks in an organised, tidy workplace and better housekeeping will result in fewer tripping hazards. If the workspace has been set up with better tool and machine placement, your employees will face fewer ergonomic risks.
