Lazy Days

Lazy Days

These last weeks of summer are “one last chance to be lazy” says a Times writer.

Do you like loafing? Or are you someone who would rather keep busy? Why? How do you spend a day when you have nothing to do and nowhere to be?

Does our society value idleness or despise it? Why do you think that is? Do you think our views of laziness should change?

Tell us in the comments, then read the related article to hear loafers and idlers, including the heads of the Lazy Butt Club, extol the virtues of the not-so-busy life.

Who Is the GOAT?

0
Who Is the GOAT?

Who is the GOAT?

No, not those cute animals with the horns and the beards. The Greatest of All Time.

Tom Brady. Serena Williams. LeBron James. Lionel Messi. Muhammad Ali. Roger Federer. What about Novak Djokovic, who just won his 24th Grand Slam? Or is it impossible, even foolish, to say?

In his essay “GOATs Are Everywhere in Sports. So What Really Defines Greatness?” published in July at the start of Wimbledon, Kurt Streeter considers how sports heroes become transcendent and why we have become so obsessed with the question of who is the greatest:

If you are reading this column, I have great news: You’re the GOAT!

That’s right: Among those who have happened upon this space, I deem you the Greatest Reader of All Time.

Then again, if you’re LeBron James, or Serena Williams, or Nikola Jokic — with that sparkling N.B.A. championship ring — well, you already know you’re the GOAT. Everyone has been saying so.

“Bahhh, bahhh, bahhh,” goes the bleating of a goat. It’s also the sound made by James’s Los Angeles Lakers teammates when he walks into the locker room. GOAT hosannas are practically the soundtrack of his life.

Driven by its pervasive usage around sports, five years ago the wordsmiths at Merriam-Webster entered the term GOAT in the dictionary as an acronym and a noun.

LeBron James is considered by many to be the GOAT in men’s basketball.

Defining the term as “the most accomplished or successful individual in the history of a particular sport or category of performance or activity,” a Merriam-Webster editor nodded to the pervasive use of Tom Brady’s name along with GOAT in a popular search engine as an example of why the acronym had become dictionary official.

Yeah, I know — this GOAT thing, it’s a little confusing. To be the greatest implies singularity, no? But now there are GOATs everywhere we turn.

Even worse than the acronym’s overuse is its doltish simplicity. There’s not enough nuance. Too much emphasis on outright winning, not enough on overcoming.

What are our options here? Maybe we should ban the use of the term outright in sports, following the lead of Lake Superior State University, which cheekily ranked the hazy, lazy acronym No. 1 on its 2023 list of banished words.

Mr. Streeter reflects on the origins of the term GOAT, and on the “craziness” of trying to identify the GOAT in a particular sport — but also on “the foolishness and the fun of it.” Then, after all of that ruminating, he goes on to name his list of GOATS:

Who’s the GOAT?

Well, to be honest, I’ve got four. Willie Mays. Joe Montana. Williams. Federer.

I can remember each for their sublime victories, of course. But also their stumbles. A 42-year-old Mays lost in the outfield. A fragile Montana in his twilight, playing not for San Francisco but Kansas City.

I was on hand to see Williams struggle and come up short as she chased that elusive last Slam. I sat feet from Federer as he held two match points against Djokovic in the Wimbledon final of 2019. Then the Swiss crumbled in defeat.

“For now it hurts, and it should — every loss hurts at Wimbledon,” Federer said at the post-match news conference. But, he added, he would persevere. “I don’t want to be depressed about actually an amazing tennis match.”

No one escapes disappointment and frailty. But if we do it right, we soldier on.

You know what that means? It means all of us can be GOATs!

Bleat on, my friends. Bleat on!

Students, read the entire article and then tell us:

  • Who’s the GOAT? Make your case for the best player of an individual sport — like basketball, tennis or hockey — or for the single greatest athlete of all time.

  • What’s your criteria for greatness? Is the greatest player the one you want to be batting in the seventh game of the World Series, with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning? The athlete with the most rings — victories, championships or titles? The most impressive longevity? The biggest effect on sports, and the world beyond?

  • What do you think of Mr. Streeter’s nominees for GOAT — Mays, Montana, Williams and Federer? Would any make your Mount Rushmore of sports heroes? Why do you think his essay mentions seeing these four superstars in moments of “disappointment and frailty”? How do they figure in the intricate calculus of GOAT-dom?

  • Does the GOAT really matter? Should we care who is the best at something? Or should the acronym be banned from sports debates for being overused, “hazy” and “lazy”? Why do you think people love to argue about the GOAT?

  • If you’re not an avid sports fan, tell us who you think should be considered the greatest of all time in another field: The greatest rapper? Guitar player? Writer? Chef? Teacher?

Word of the Day: zenith

0
Word of the Day: zenith

The word zenith has appeared in 34 articles on NYTimes.com in the past year, including on Aug. 4 in “Acropolis Will Limit Visitor Numbers as Europe Tackles a Tourist Crush” by Niki Kitsantonis and Isabella Kwai:

Greece will start capping the number of visitors to the Acropolis, government officials said, an effort to curb overcrowding at its most popular archaeological site amid wider worries about the impact of tourists thronging European attractions.

… The restrictions on the ancient citadel above Athens come during a travel renaissance in the wake of the pandemic’s peak, with visitors converging on European destinations during the season’s zenith in July and August, undeterred by high airfares and hotel prices.

Can you correctly use the word zenith in a sentence?

Based on the definition and example provided, write a sentence using today’s Word of the Day and share it as a comment on this article. It is most important that your sentence makes sense and demonstrates that you understand the word’s definition, but we also encourage you to be creative and have fun.

Then, read some of the other sentences students have submitted and use the “Recommend” button to vote for two original sentences that stand out to you.

If you want a better idea of how zenith can be used in a sentence, read these usage examples on Vocabulary.com.

How to Add Images to WordPress Sidebar

How to Add Images to WordPress Sidebar

Adding Images to WordPress Sidebar

Adding images to the sidebar of your blog or website can really enhance the overall look and feel. It’s a great way to make your site more attractive and highlight any important links or information you want to share with your readers. Today’s tutorial will walk you through how to add an image to your WordPress sidebar.

Adding Images to WordPress Sidebar

If you are running the newest version of WordPress and your design supports blocks in the sidebar (like our WordPress themes!), the whole process is straightforward and similar to creating WordPress posts.

#1 Find your sidebar

All sidebars are located in your WordPress Dashboard. To find them, locate the Appearance tab on the left and click the Widgets tab.

In the Widgets window, you will see all the available sidebars for your design. By default, the Primary Sidebar is the right column of your blog. And just in case you have some widgets that you’re not using right now but think you might want to use them in the future, you can keep them in the inactive widgets tab.

#2 Pick a widget type

To add an image (or any other widget) click on the plus icon, and from the drop-down menu, choose the widget you need. If you are looking for something specific like the image widget, you can easily find it by using the search bar. And if you want to explore all the options available, just click on “browse all.”

#3 Setup your widget

After adding the widget, it’s time to add some content! If you’re using the image widget, it’s super easy. All you have to do is upload an image from your computer or choose one from the media library.

#4 Play with settings and save

Now you can browse all block settings on the right and in the small tool panel above your widget. You will find there: an option to change your image size, add links, change image shape, and more!

Once you are happy with the results, remember to click the Update button in the top right corner.

And that’s all! Your image widget is now added to the sidebar of your choice!

Adding Images to WordPress Sidebar in classic editor

If you haven’t updated to the latest version of WordPress yet (or your design does not support blocks in sidebars), just a heads up that adding content to your sidebar might look a little different. No worries, though, you can still find all your sidebars in the Appearance tab. Just keep in mind that the widget window might have a different look and feel.

All the widgets will now be listed next to the sidebars, and all you need to do is find the Image widget and click on it. A drop-down will appear, asking you to select where you want the image placed. Click the sidebar of your choice (for the right blog column pick Primary Sidebar) and then click Add Widget.

You’ll see that the image widget has now been added to your sidebar. By default, the widget will be added to the bottom of your sidebar. If you wish to reposition the widget, simply click on the image widget and drag it up into the position in your sidebar you want it.

Now you need to add the image you wish to appear on your sidebar, so click on the “No image selected” box to choose your image.

Follow the instructions to upload an image or pick one from the media library. Once your image is visible in the widget, don’t forget to click the save button in the bottom right corner.

Now go to your live site and check out your new sidebar image! If you need to make any changes to the image in the future, you can easily go back to Appearance > Widgets and then find the Image widget in your Primary Sidebar to make your changes.

I hope that now adding images to the WordPress sidebar will be easy. If you have any questions, let me know in the comments.

Why You Don’t Have to Major in CS to Be a Software Engineer

Why You Don’t Have to Major in CS to Be a Software Engineer

You don’t have to major in computer science to be a developer. Plenty of people teach themselves technical skills and bring their unique life experiences into their tech roles.

In fact, many engineers on our team at Codecademy studied other disciplines in school — from theater to biology and everything in between. “We have senior engineers and engineering managers who started as apprentices and are doing a great without CS degrees,” says Ana Harris, Senior Software Engineer at Codecademy.

Curious how people got their start in tech after choosing completely different majors? Ahead, Ana and other Codecademy engineers share their different educational backgrounds and explain how they helped prepare them for their current roles.  And if you’re a college student and want to learn coding, check out our Student Center where you can get access to Codecademy Pro features for a discount.

Learn something new for free

English

Codecademy Senior Software Engineer Cass Spain was an avid book reader in college, so they majored in English with plans to work in the publishing industry. But their affinity for coding and problem-solving led them in another direction.

Cass picked up programming at a young age. “I started with HTML and CSS on Neopets and MySpace,” they say. “Then in college, I worked as an intern for a book company and did a lot of the HTML and JavaScript coding for the ebooks.”

After the book company, Cass found a job helping improve systems and processes as an operations manager for a catering company. “I’m a very lazy person, so I automatically look for ways to make the fewest mistakes possible — and if you give that to other people, all of a sudden you have these standard operating procedures,” they say.

These experiences helped hone Cass’ ability to think like a programmer, and after a brief stint in art handling, they enrolled in a bootcamp. Later, they came to Codecademy, where the communication skills gained from their English degree allows them to collaborate effectively with other engineers and write clear code documentation

“How do you explain what a design system is to people? How do you explain how our system is different from others’?” they say. “That’s one of the biggest things I took from my English major — how do I communicate what this does in three words that are two syllables long?”

Economics

Neil Daftary has spent the past eight years coding for Codecademy — and the last two as an Engineering Manager. But in college, he wasn’t too into programming. Instead, he followed in his father’s footsteps and majored in economics with plans to work in finance. After graduating, he landed a job as a copywriter for a mobile app startup, which inspired Neil to make his own app.

Still uncertain about committing to software engineering full-time, Neil started small. “I decided to go for a night class on HTML, CSS, and Ruby on Rails,” he said. “After completing the course and two short unpaid internships, I landed a paid internship and have been in the industry since!”

Neil came into the industry with some data analysis skills after using R and running ETL (extract, transform, load) workflows during an economic research internship. “I’d say the main transferrable skills were from the math and microeconomic courses where I learned and practiced breaking complex problems down into smaller pieces,” he said.

Even if you don’t want to be a developer, programming and analytics skills can prove useful for economics and finance professionals who work with large volumes of data. Check out our courses like BI Dashboards with Tableau and How to Analyze Business Metrics with SQL to learn more.

Political science & foreign languages

Before becoming a Senior Software Engineer at Codecademy, Ana Harris studied Russian language and literature in Serbia and traveled to Scotland for a master’s in political science and East European studies. She’d intended to pursue academia and never really considered alternatives; working outside of your field of study is less common in European countries, she says. “It’s still kind of crazy for me, coming from a very different work culture, that you can just do a course and get a job,” she says.

When her husband, a software engineer with a liberal arts degree, suggested coding, she found herself drawn to the flexibility, work culture, and opportunities for continued learning in the field. “Even now, four years into software engineering, it can still be frustrating when you’re learning new things — but you gain the confidence to do it,” Ana says. “And when you start having those ‘aha!’ moments, and you make something or connect the dots on certain things, it feels really good.”

Ana’s academic background laid a great foundation for her work at Codecademy. As part of her degree, she worked with different age groups and learned different teaching methodologies that directly translate to her current role. “A lot of it is really just: How do you transfer your skill to someone else?” she says.

Plus, Ana’s language skills help distill complex subjects and information, which comes in handy when writing technical documentation. “I’m not a native English speaker, which can be an advantage, because you tend not to use extremely complicated words and sentence structures,” she says.

Discover your next passion

There’s no one path to a fulfilling career in tech, and your “non-technical” educational background could be an asset. The more skills and perspectives there are represented in the tech industry, the more innovative and inclusive we can be.

If you want to see how your specific skills and interests can help prepare you for a tech career, check out our free course Choosing a Career in Tech. You might be surprised to discover how blending your passions with tech can lead you to different ways of thinking or even a fulfilling new career.

If you’re not sure what you want to learn, just try one of our free programming courses.

“Learn to code for free and see if you genuinely like it,” Neil says. “Try to build something that solves one of your own problems. There are so many free resources like Codecademy where you can try out coding at your own pace.” The free courses Learn to Code with Blockly and Choosing a Programming Language are great places to start. There’s also our Computer Science career path that covers the essentials of what you’d learn in a college CS course.

And no matter what your goals are, remember to be patient. Lots of self-taught developers have switched careers and landed jobs in just a few months, but it can take time to get your foot in the door. “Don’t get discouraged, because getting your first job is the hardest thing,” Cass says. “It’s all gravy after that.”
