If you’re in the market for a job in tech, there’s a good chance you’ve come across cybersecurity roles during your search. In the United States, there are an estimated 700,000 open cybersecurity positions that need to be filled.
There are a couple factors contributing to the current demand for cybersecurity professionals: The Covid pandemic accelerated the digital shift that was already taking place across industries. At the same time, organizations recognize that security breaches cost businesses millions of dollars, making cybersecurity a top priority. Companies need skilled cybersecurity pros to help organizations keep information secure and defend against constantly evolving threats.
Curious what types of careers you can have in cybersecurity? Here, we break down the cybersecurity jobs with the most demand, plus the online courses and paths that will teach you the skills you need to get hired.
Companies today generate huge swaths of data and rely on it to drive business decisions. Naturally, organizations need cybersecurity professionals to keep that data safe.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Information Security Analyst is one of the fastest-growing occupations, and the demand is projected to grow 35% in the next 10 years. Information Security, aka “InfoSec,” is a subset of cybersecurity that involves protecting information and information systems from attacks.
An InfoSec Analyst would be responsible for safeguarding an organization’s data (in any form) from landing in the hands of the wrong people. InfoSec Analysts use a range of methods to protect data, including installing and managing firewalls and developing security standards and best practices.
There are lots of job openings for Security Engineers, which are essentially developers who build secure systems and software, says Ricki Burke, founder of CyberSec People, a global cybersecurity recruitment and staffing company. Security Engineers assess potential threats to systems, design targeted solutions, and then implement them. Since Security Engineers are developing systems and auditing code, strong coding and scripting skills are a must. A Security Engineer’s role tends to be collaborative, so it’s a good fit for someone who likes to work in a team environment. They also need problem-solving skills and the ability to work in high-pressure situations.
GRC is short for “governance, risk, and compliance.” GRC Specialists are the people who establish and uphold an organization’s security frameworks, policies, and guidelines that protect an environment. Companies look for GRC professionals who have knowledge of a particular sector, and can understand how international, federal, and state laws and regulations for security affect the industry at a high-level, Ricki says.
GRC Specialists might use threat intelligence techniques to continuously gather and process data that could point to possible attacks in the future. Good to know: Cybersecurity professionals who work in the GRC domain often use data science and machine learning techniques to parse through data more efficiently.
Penetration Testers, also known as “pentesters” or “ethical hackers,” help organizations identify their vulnerabilities by attempting to breach their cybersecurity defenses — in other words, they’re hackers who use their skills for good. According to survey data from CyberSeek, Penetration and Vulnerability Testers are some of the top job titles requested by employers within the cybersecurity job market.
Pentesters use various techniques that malicious hackers use during a cyber attack, like phishing and social engineering, in order to test systems and identify weaknesses. A network is two or more computers or devices that are linked so they can share information. Network Engineers are one of the top job titles organizations are looking for within the cybersecurity market, according to CyberSeek data.

The daily responsibilities of a Network Engineer can include things like installing and configuring equipment like routers and switchers, troubleshooting network issues, and implementing security measures like firewalls, VPNs, and antivirus software.

Cloud computing is an emerging (not to mention lucrative) area within cybersecurity that’s worth having on your radar. More and more organizations rely on cloud computing services — software, analytics, servers, and storage that run over the internet — because the technology enables them to scale quickly. A 2022 survey from ISACA, a professional association for IT, found that cloud computing is one of the top skills employers seek in candidates.

Today’s employers are tasked with filling vast amounts of roles within their companies. However, Europe’s Digital Economy and Society Index reports that nearly 60% of employers say they are struggling to find the right people to fill available jobs. Meanwhile, 75% of workers surveyed by Salesforce in 2022 admitted they did not think they had the right skills for a digital-first world.
Furthermore, many workers now find themselves in roles that are increasingly vulnerable to shifts in the labor market, a situation that threatens to increase inequality and poverty globally.
We’ve seen first-hand at Coursera how workforce development leaders worldwide are developing reskilling programs that deliver digital skills training, prepare workers for in-demand roles, and provide opportunities to underprivileged or marginalized groups.
For instance, in 2021, Barbados partnered with Coursera to launch the National Transformation Initiative (NTI), which helped to upskill thousands of citizens through online training—and provided 20,000 scholarships for Barbadian women, many of whom did not have a degree.

More than 70% of consumers surveyed in the US, UK, and China had heard of the metaverse as of early 2022, compared to just 32% in July 2021. Despite that increased awareness and the metaverse’s long-term potential to create jobs, consumers remain largely uncertain about what this emerging technology is, who will build it, and how it will impact their lives.

There are an estimated 700,000 open cybersecurity jobs in the United States — and you might have the skills necessary to fill one of them.
As tech continues to transform our lives, more people are needed to defend these technologies and keep up with their advancements, says Okey Obudulu, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) for Skillsoft, the company that owns Codecademy. “The blatant attacks on companies’ networks have led more and more companies to really get serious around the demand for cybersecurity professionals,” he says.
Cybersecurity is an umbrella term for protecting computer systems, networks, people, and organizations from online threats and bad actors. The roles within a cybersecurity team range from Penetration Testers who hack into an organization’s network to uncover vulnerabilities, to Incident Response Analyst who are essentially detectives who solve crimes with digital data.
A lot of cybersecurity professionals get their start in other technical jobs, like Software Developer or Network Administrator, explains Ricki Burke, founder of CyberSec People, a global cybersecurity recruitment and staffing company. With the right cybersecurity skills on your resume, you can feel confident about breaking into the industry.
Curious which skills cybersecurity recruiters are looking for in job-seekers? Here are the programming languages, technical capabilities, and marketable skills you should know about to get a job in cybersecurity.
One of the most in-demand cybersecurity jobs is a Security Engineer, which is a programmer who can design secure systems and software, Ricki says. “When I talk to a lot of security companies, their version of a modern security professional can code, they can build, and they can problem-solve through automation,” he says.
The role of a Security Engineer is a lot like a Software Engineer, so coding and scripting knowledge is a must-have, Ricki says. It’s pretty common for developers to pick up some security-specific skills and then transition into the cybersecurity space, he says.
The more technical skills you grasp, the more opportunities you’ll have to contribute across a broader domain, Okey says. If you’re just starting your coding journey and wondering what you should learn, these are the programming languages that are used in cybersecurity:

According to Ricki, there are lots of opportunities for jobs within SecOps, which is the term for IT and security teams who work with the security operations center (SOC). “Security operations essentially are like the defenders of the company or organization,” he says. Threat Hunters, for example, are Security Analysts who proactively look for threats in systems. (You can think of Threat Hunters as kind of like security guards at a museum who are always on the lookout for intruders.)
Mature companies with robust cybersecurity teams often hire Threat Hunters to comb sources and accumulate “threat intelligence,” Ricki says. These people need to know how to gather intelligence and analyze it using techniques like packet-sniffing. In our course Introduction to Ethical Hacking, you’ll learn about the tools used in packet-sniffing and get to practice using the network analysis tool TCPDump to perform packet analysis.
In order to be successful in these types of roles, you need to have an in-depth understanding of not only the technology used to find threats, but also how your findings correlate to the industry at large. “Business context is fundamental,” Ricki says. “You can be the best hacker in the world, but if you can’t explain what the vulnerabilities actually mean for business, then it means nothing.”
Understanding automation can give you a leg up when you’re applying for cybersecurity jobs, because companies rely on automating security tasks (like identity and authentication) as they scale, Ricki says. For example, an organization might want someone who can develop automation APIs that allow them to detect and triage cyber threats faster and more efficiently. You can learn how to build web APIs in our course Create REST APIs with Spring and Java, or take your API skills to the next level with API Development with Swagger and OpenAPI.
People in cybersecurity use Python to automate lots of tasks, like pentesting and SOC analysis. In a malware analysis, for example, Python can be used to automate the process of searching through files and ports. Want to learn Python? “Cybersecurity is not just technology — it’s more of a risk management function,” Okey says. Organizations need people who can develop best practice standards around security and make sure people are following them. These jobs tend to be less technical, but they’re critical to a company’s safety, Ricki says. You can learn how to create industry-standard cyber resilience policies for individuals and organizations in our course Fundamentals of Cyber Resilience and Risk Management.
Larger companies typically have Governance, Risk, and Compliance (aka “GRC”) specialists within information security teams, Ricki says. These folks are responsible for establishing security frameworks, policies, and guidelines that protect an environment. For example, someone in a GRC role might train team members in specific security protocols, as well as assess the security risk of third-party vendors that an organization wants to use.
In certain sectors, like healthcare or finance, companies are looking for GRC professionals who have backgrounds in the field, because they have a high-level comprehension of the business’ broader needs, Ricki explains. “Say you’re a nurse who wants to become a security person: You know way more than some outsider coming into the business who has never worked in healthcare before,” he says. Don’t hesitate to leverage your past work experience or industry knowledge, because it could help you stand out in a pool of applicants.

Witnessing a live HackerOne hacking event for the first time was “mind-blowing,” according to Ariel Garcia, who is now the Senior Manager of Technical Community Programs at HackerOne. At the time, he was working as a Senior Cybersecurity Analyst for an Argentinian financial company, but being in Las Vegas, surrounded by talented ethical hackers who were hacking for three days straight energized Ariel.
HackerOne is a platform that connects businesses to penetration testers and cybersecurity professionals who can help find potential vulnerabilities and flaws by hacking their systems. Put another way: “We help companies avoid being hacked — by hacking them,” Ariel says. Some organizations that use HackerOne include tech giants like Uber, Twitter, PayPal, and Zoom.
A big part of Ariel’s role is recruiting hackers for HackerOne’s prestigious pentesting community and setting them up with pentesting projects. But the most rewarding part is bringing hackers together through live community events and introducing people to hacking as a career, he says.
“What I love the most about my job is that we are changing people’s lives, which sounds corny, but is true,” Ariel says. “I talk to hackers from our community every single day from different countries — India, Argentina, Romania, Pakistan, you name it — that may not have the same opportunities as everyone else. As long as you can hack and find a vulnerability, we pay everyone the same, and that’s life-changing money and opportunities right there.”
Here’s how Ariel learned how to ethically hack, got involved in HackerOne events, and landed a job working for HackerOne.
“In Argentina, you start working much younger than in the United States, usually while going to college at the same time. A lot of companies hire you without a degree, kind of betting on your future.
In my case, I studied information engineering — or IT — and I started working at 18 years old at a call center, then I got a job at a telecommunication company. I always liked computers and I’m kind of a geek. I started learning about a lot of technical concepts that gave me networking knowledge, like the IP and HTTP protocol there, routers, and VPNs.
There was a cybersecurity position open at Deloitte, one of the ‘Big Four’ accounting firms, and I got it. My main source of knowledge came from people teaching me on-the-go at the job. What helped me learn was hands-on hacking, seeing it in real time, and people explaining, ‘Oh, we found this vulnerability. This is how it works.’ The hands-on experience was extremely important, thanks to my colleagues.”
“In 2017, I was working for an Argentinian financial company and I went to DEF CON, the biggest hacking and InfoSec conference of the year, in Vegas. HackerOne was doing a live hacking event there, and someone invited me because my friend was participating as a hacker. I went, and instead of just drinking, having food, and getting free swag, I started connecting with people. I talked to a lot of people and I made friends that night — it was amazing.
If you go to a HackerOne event, you kind of get mind-blown, because there are hackers hacking and swag everywhere. I thought, Hey, I want these in Argentina, because we have a huge community of hackers, and I know a lot of them. I started working with someone on the HackerOne community team to plan a live hacking event in Buenos Aires, even though I had never done that before.
The event was a success: I got close to 35 local hackers to participate, and a lot of hackers made thousands of dollars in that hacking event, which spoke to the level of talent we have here in South America. Folks were happy with the results, and HackerOne’s VP of Marketing at the time said, ‘I love this. Do you want to come work with us?’ I thought it was too good to be true, but to my surprise, they hired me.”
“I’m a Senior Manager for Technical Community Programs, which is a wide umbrella of things. We basically recruit, onboard, and assist the pentest community at HackerOne. While our bug bounty program is open to anyone, the pentest community requires specific skills, certifications, and experience, so we target a niche area within our own community.
We source every hacker that needs to be on a pentest, and we specifically farm things based on languages, geolocation, and skills — it’s a bit of a puzzle. We also do a bunch of recruiting as a whole, for example, if we need more hackers in iOS, how do we recruit more hackers with that skill? We just came back from a live hacking event in Barcelona, where we’re basically putting a bunch of hackers from the community together in the same physical place, and they hack a customer non-stop for like 15 days.”
“You don’t need to get a degree or spend 10 years in college for somebody to start hacking,” Ariel says. “It’s never too late to learn.” Ariel’s advice is to approach hacking from an area of development that you’re already interested in. For example, if you’re an iOS Developer, maybe it would make sense to learn iOS hacking?
With so many free online resources available to learn how to hack, there are tons of ways to jump right in, learn at your own pace, and get hands-on hacking practice. HackerOne is a great place for hackers who want to learn how to hack and start earning money from bug bounty programs, meeting other hackers, and participating in Capture the Flag events.

Much like learning how to do a backflip or training to become a firefighter, you can’t just practice hacking anywhere — you need a safe and controlled setting, otherwise you could cause harm to yourself and others.
Ethical hacking is when a programmer has permission to use their technical skills to intentionally break into computer systems and access sensitive data to find common vulnerabilities within code that other people have written. The difference between ethical and unethical hacking usually comes down to consent and intent; a malicious hacker would use these same skills (without permission) to steal information or assets for financial gain or cause other harm.
To be clear, accessing data in a system without authorization is illegal, and one of the key principles of ethical hacking is to obey the law. So if you’re interested in having a career that involves hacking, like a Penetration Tester or Security Analyst, you might be wondering how you can get hands-on practice without, you know, breaking the law.
Here are some (definitely legal) resources that you can use to gain hands-on ethical hacking experience without putting yourself or others in danger.
It’s essential to understand the technical skills that are used in ethical hacking before you dive in. Our new course Introduction to Ethical Hacking covers some of the common tools and techniques that hackers use, including vulnerability analysis, exploitation, and packet- sniffing. Plus, this course will outline the differences between ethical and unethical hacking, so you won’t have to second-guess whether you’re violating the law.

Virtual machines that you download and run locally on your computer are ideal for practicing hacking, explains Austin Turecek, a Senior Application Security Consultant who contributed to Codecademy’s Intro to Ethical Hacking course. With a self-contained virtual machine, you can do whatever you want to a program, without worrying that you’re going to overstep.
“It’s a lot more forgiving,” Austin says. “If you break something in these boxes, you just delete it and start over. But if you delete the wrong thing in a company’s environment, even though your intentions may have been good, you could always cost the company large amounts of money.”
Start with VulnHub, which is a collection of sites that are vulnerable by design. “These systems are set up so you can run them locally on your machine to learn the tools, thought-process, and skills associated with hacking,” he says. Hack the Box is another platform where you can play around with gamified pentesting labs — they’re always adding new labs based on the latest vulnerability techniques. And PortSwigger, the company that makes the web security testing software Burp Suite, also has lots of labs covering vulnerabilities like SQL injection, cross-site scripting, and authentication.
As you get more experienced with ethical hacking, you might consider participating in bug bounty programs, where organizations give hackers permission to discover vulnerabilities or weaknesses in their systems for a monetary reward. You can find active bug bounty programs on sites like HackerOne and Bugcrowd.
Keep in mind: These are live and real systems, so you must stay within the scope of an organization’s bug bounty program and follow their rules around disclosing the vulnerabilities. “Make sure you have at least a little bit of knowledge about the different types of vulnerabilities out there before jumping in,” Austin says. “If you don’t, you’re probably not going to find anything. And if you do, you might go about it in a potentially dangerous way.”
Remember the playground game “capture the flag”? In cybersecurity, capture the flag (aka CTF) competitions are events where hackers team up to uncover “flags” or vulnerabilities within a program.
There are a few different types of CTFs: In Jeopardy-style CTFs, for example, participants have to complete tasks in categories like forensics, web exploitation, cryptography, and reverse engineering. Attack-defense CTFs, on the other hand, tend to be more complicated because they involve launching attacks and defenses against another team using a vulnerable server.
You can find a lengthy list of upcoming CTF competitions and read write-ups from past competitions on the website CTFtime. Not only are CTF competitions fun ways to get hands-on hacking experience, they’re also a way to network with other people in cybersecurity.
If you have any qualms about whether or not an action is ethical or legal, stop what you’re doing, and take a step back. “If you’re really not confident about something, generally it’s best to avoid doing it until you feel more comfortable or you have a better understanding of it,” Austin says. “Hacking is one of those areas where it’s very easy to cause damage to other things and yourself.”

Hackers get a bad rap. Usually, when people think of hacking, they imagine cybercriminals breaking into databases and stealing sensitive information to either sell or use for some other nefarious purpose. And while this does happen, hacking also has a more practical, beneficial application: It’s called ethical hacking.
Like regular hackers, Ethical Hackers also break into systems — but they do so with the organization’s consent. Ariel Garcia, a Senior Community Operations Manager for the penetration testing company HackerOne, explains how companies turn to Ethical Hackers to find and resolve security vulnerabilities, which helps keep their systems, data, and users more secure. “We help companies avoid being hacked — by hacking them,” he said in an interview.

Lastly, even if hacking isn’t your thing, a career in cybersecurity can still be a great choice. “While ethical hacking is definitely an exciting, flashy part of cybersecurity, you can still get into it without a technical skill set,” Sarai says. “There are lots of governance, risk, and compliance roles (among others) that are non-technical. Cybersecurity is a huge field, and there’s room for hackers and non-hackers alike!”
