How to Get Your Network Engineer Portfolio Noticed

How to Get Your Network Engineer Portfolio Noticed

Network Engineers play a crucial role on their teams — they’re entrusted with designing, setting up, and managing their company’s computer networks, which are often the backbone of their business. If a company’s network has an outage or goes down, the Network Engineer is usually charged with getting that network back up and running. On top of all that, a Network Engineer also has to maintain the network, optimize its performance, and ensure its security.

That means that, whether you’re an experienced Network Engineer or a beginner in this field, there’s a huge range of skills you’ll need to show off when you’re interviewing for a role. A great way to accomplish this is by crafting a detailed professional portfolio.

So how do you do that? Here, we take a look at the experience you should showcase when you’re applying to Network Engineer roles, along with the best ways to make that experience shine on a resume and portfolio.

What should you include in your Network Engineer portfolio?

When you’re putting together a portfolio, you can either use a template, or build one yourself using coding. The latter can be a great way to showcase your technical ability, but it’s not a necessity.

The portfolio should have elements similar to a resume, like sections of information about you (with headers to make it easier to find them). It should also have a domain name (it’s a good idea to get your own personalized domain to use), and links to professional profiles from LinkedIn and similar sites.

Bio

A good bio shows who you are as a person, and includes information about you that might not fit in a resume. For example, you might discuss your professional journey, or hobbies (both related and not related to network engineering). If writing isn’t your thing, here’s our guide to writing a bio in five easy steps.

Contact info & resume

Your portfolio should include your contact information at the top so that potential employers and/or clients can find it right away. You’ll want to include:

  • Your name
  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • Professional social media accounts
  • Resume

Skills and experience

To craft a Network Engineer portfolio (and a related resume), think about the experiences, knowledge, and examples you are going to include. If you’re new to the field, it can help to add any relevant certifications or education you might have. And you’ll certainly want to apply any past professional experience to what you’ll be doing in the Network Engineer role, even if it’s totally unrelated — don’t discount how your soft skills can translate.

If you already have professional experience in the field — particularly experience in related roles like a Network Technician, Network Analyst, Network Operations Associate, or Technical Support Engineer — you’ll likely have work examples that will apply to Network Engineer roles and can be included in your portfolio. If you have experience in a related but more advanced role, such as Network Administrator, Network Specialist, Network Manager, or Network Solutions Architect, these would also yield work examples for a portfolio. (More on portfolio projects below.)

When it comes to your skills as a Network Engineer, there are specific aspects of the role that should be listed in your portfolio, according to Zippia. These include:

  • Protocols: Writing, designing, or configuration of network communications.
  • Troubleshooting: Fine-tuning wireless communication or network latency issues.
  • Infrastructure: The design or redesign of network hardware or video networks and analysis of network infrastructure data.
  • BGP: Configuring border gateway protocols.
  • OSPF: Designing and implementing interior gateway protocols in networks.
  • LAN: Designing, engineering, or configuring local area networks.
  • Juniper Network: Working with the Juniper Network’s networking products and software.
  • TCP/IP: Creating or configuring systems for network transmissions and internet protocols.
  • EIGRP: Designing and implementing enhanced interior gateway protocols.
  • IOS: Specialization in all aspects of network technology for the Apple iPhone Operating System.
  • MPLS: Redesigning connectivity for multiprotocol label switching, including the configuration of necessary lines and routers.

Being armed with these industry terms will show that you have the credentials and capability and will help get your portfolio noticed.

Projects

Because a Network Engineer is a technical role, you’ll be crafting a technical portfolio, the heart of which will be the projects you present within it. You can share these according to the different types of projects you might have taken on, such as:

  • Open-source: Unsolicited contributions to sites and systems that rely on open-source design and programming, like Firefox.
  • Individual: A sample project that you create to show what you can do in an area of interest to you personally, like gaming.
  • Group: A project where you worked with a team, which can show how well you collaborate with others.
  • Product clones: A deliberate copy of a site or system of the prospective employer intended to show the employer what you can do.
  • Verticals: A project or sample project in specialized areas, such as testing or access to systems.

If you’re looking for more project ideas for your portfolio, we have free portfolio projects that enable you to apply what you’ve learned so you can show off your skills.

Certifications

For any kind of Network Engineer role, whether general or specialized, you should know programming languages like Python and Java. If you complete a Codecademy course or path, you’ll get a certificate, which you can list on your portfolio, resume, and LinkedIn profile.

You would also do well to have certifications in facets of network engineering, such as:

  • Cisco networks
  • Linux operating systems
  • IT management certifications
  • CompTIA certifications covering Windows, cloud computing, and networking.

All of these skills and accomplishments are worth pointing out somewhere in your portfolio.

Specializations

In addition to the general responsibilities we discussed, Network Engineers may also perform more specific roles within a company. Here are some common specializations for a Network Engineer:

  • Cloud Networking Architect: Specializes in operating hybrid cloud environments, migrating to cloud networks, deploying systems in the cloud, and troubleshooting cloud services issues.
  • Network Security Specialist: Searches for security vulnerabilities to keep the network ahead of them.
  • Wireless Network Engineer: Specializes in the wireless equipment parts of network systems.
  • VOIP Engineer: Voice over internet protocol blends calls, online meetings, and in-house chat rooms. Also serves as a replacement for landline phone systems. A network engineer can be dedicated to just this kind of system alone.
  • Data-Center Networking Specialist: Data centers house data critical to a company or organization. They also feed email and other key functions and systems. These specialists focus on network and storage infrastructure that is the foundation of data centers.

If you have any of these specialized experiences, you will want to highlight it in your portfolio using the specific terminology, whether that’s in your bio, project section, resume, or anywhere else that’s relevant.

Take your Network Engineer portfolio to the next level

To take your portfolio even further, it helps to have an established online presence when you apply for a role. While that may sound intimidating, in practicality, it’s not as involved as it may sound. It can really just be a matter of creating and/or updating your LinkedIn profile with your work experience. This will help you connect with recruiters and find work in the field.

If you want to take it a step further, you can show your engagement and passion for your field by posting relevant thoughts and news on social media platforms like Twitter or LinkedIn. You can also publish longform blog posts, either on your portfolio, your LinkedIn, or another site. This can be a good way to showcase yourself as a thought leader.

Of course, by no means should you feel like you have to start posting to social media or writing blogs, but just know these can be great ways to demonstrate your enthusiasm and knowledge if you’re comfortable with putting yourself out there in these ways.

How Much Does a React Developer Make?

Anytime you’re using a website or an app of any kind, you’re likely benefiting from the work of a React Developer.

React is a JavaScript front-end framework that was developed by Facebook and quickly became one of the most popular frameworks in use today. It’s used by React Developers to essentially design and implement user-facing features for websites and apps, a huge component of the tech industry. As such, there’s plenty of demand for this role, and React Developers are relatively well-paid.

According to ZipRecruiter, the national average salary for a React Developer in the United States is $108,485, but your individual pay can vary depending on a few factors.

Location

Like many other positions, location can affect the average salary. With a lot of technical jobs going fully remote, it may seem like location may not matter as much, but the location of the company you work for still plays a big role. Plus, many remote-friendly companies have specific salary bands based on an employee’s location — meaning, cities with higher costs of living come with higher salaries (and vice versa).

Here are some of the cities with the highest salaries for React Developers, according to ZipRecruiter:

  1. Atkinson, NE: $138,117
  2. San Jose, CA: $132,949
  3. Frankston, TX: $131,444
  4. Oakland, CA: $131,412
  5. Seattle, WA: $128,477
  6. Barnstable Town, MA: $127,537
  7. Concord, CA: $126,565
  8. Inverness, CA: $126,492
  9. Wasilla, AK: $125,193
  10. Seaside, CA: $124,455

Experience

Salary can also vary by experience. Here’s a rough estimate of what you can expect to make at each level as a React Developer, according to Glassdoor:

Entry level (1-3 years): $110,922

Early career (4-6 years): $114,203

Mid-career (7-9 years): $117,414

Experienced (10-14 years): $121,860

Late career (15+ years): $128,112

Company

Often, salaries can vary according to the company you work for, though Glassdoor shows fairly similar averages for pay for a React Developer from company to company.

Here’s a more detailed breakdown of the companies offering the highest salaries for React Developers:

Google: $124,612

Apple: $114,815

Microsoft: $114,108

American Express: $108,701

Of course, wherever you land a job, you can definitely negotiate your salary. And while pay is important, there are plenty of other factors to consider with a job offer, like stock options, remote work flexibility and health benefits.

While many developers begin their careers with a bachelor’s degree in computer science, specialized degrees and higher education are not always requirements. There are plenty of other ways to build your educational background, like online courses. Our Learn React skill path, for example, will teach you the fundamentals of this powerful front-end framework and earn you a certificate that you can list on your resume, LinkedIn, and in your portfolio.

You can further your skills with our Create a Front-End App with React course. Redux is a common library used with React, and our Create an Advanced Web App with React and Redux course will teach you how to use both of these libraries together to build complex web applications.

Testing your code is an important part of being a developer, and our courses can put you on the path in your career as a React Developer. Not sure where you want to start? Try our sorting quiz to see which languages suit your interests and skills best.

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly of Cover Letters

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly of Cover Letters

Applying for jobs can be an arduous process. One way to get noticed by recruiters and hiring managers is by presenting a professionally crafted resume. Alison’s new Resume Builder takes this stress away by building you one that will get you noticed. It’s free and simple to use. Your resume is your factsheet. It tells a prospective employer or hiring manager about your skill set and experience level.

The second half of the job application process is writing a winning cover letter. Your cover letter should highlight your future and tell the recruiter how you will use your past to enhance and achieve your future goals, but what makes you the ideal candidate for the role and why you believe you’re a great fit for the company. Let’s look at everything you need to know about the good, the bad, and the ugly of cover letters.

What Is A Cover Letter?

A cover letter is a one-page document that accompanies your resume and tells the recruiter why they should hire you. Your cover letter adds  a personal touch to each application and demonstrates all your achievements, experience, qualifications, and most importantly, what makes you the ideal candidate for the position and the best person for the job.

The Benefits Of Writing A Cover Letter

Depending on the job or company, a cover letter is optional. If this is the case, always opt to include a cover letter. It not only shows your interest in the company but allows you to sell yourself to the hiring manager. Writing a cover letter has advantages that make it worth the time spent to craft one.

  • Gives your application a personal touch

Your resume states the facts of your formal qualifications, background and work experience. A cover letter gives the recruiter a better sense of who you are and highlights the exact skills and values you believe will be beneficial to the company you want to work for.

  • Expresses your interest in the company

Hundreds of people will be applying for the job. But if optional, only a handful will add their cover letter. By taking time to specially craft one for the company shows you’ve done research on the company and have an interest in more than just the paycheck.

  • Demonstrates your abilities

The biggest skill your cover letter will showcase is your attention to detail and impeccable writing skills. Communication is a big part of any job and a valuable transferable skill to have. Your cover letter and how well you write it, further shows your suitability for the job, it kick-starts your relationship with the hiring managers and tells your future employer that you are hardworking and willing to go the extra mile.

There are dos and don’ts of cover letters that will either get you to the next stage or send your application to the bin. Here’s everything you need to know about what to do and not do and how to fix it.

The Good

  • Keep it brief. Recruiters don’t have time to read an essay or anything more than 400 words. When written well, 200-400 words should be enough to get your message across.
  • Highlight the relevant skills that will help you excel in the role you’re applying for.
  • Be original. A copy-paste job from your favourite website says nothing about you and the effort you took to apply for the position.
  • Research. Do more research about the position you’re applying for and the company’s needs. You can then match your skills, value and experience in the cover letter to these needs.
  • Include job-specific keywords.
  • Proofread. A perfect cover letter is one without silly mistakes, typos, structural and grammar errors. It speaks to attention to detail – a quality every employer is looking for.

The Bad

You very rarely get a second chance to make a good first impression. More so when your dream job is on the line. These listed examples are cover letter no-nos.

  • Sending one cover letter to all positions you are applying for. Recruiters have a sixth sense for the ‘one-size-fits-all’ letter.
  • A cover letter longer than one page.
  • Not including your unique selling points. Simply saying you are applying for the position is not enough. So are the 101 other applications they’re receiving.
  • Concluding your letter with a passive ending. Don’t just sign off your letter but add something like, “I will follow up in a few days to find out if you have additional questions. Until then, you can find out more about me on my Alison profile and contact me on 555 555-5555 for any questions.

The Ugly

  • An error-laden cover letter. Proofread what you’ve written a few times. You can also ask a friend or family member to give you feedback.
  • No research on the position and company. Your cover letter should show that you’ve read up on the company, its values, the culture, and the qualities, skills and requirements they’re looking for in a candidate.
  • Very casual tone – using text lingo is a big RED flag.
  • Using the wrong company information in the letter or addressing Mr Jones as “Mrs Davids”.
  • Repeating the content of your resume.
  • Talking only about you, you and you. It’s good to let them know who you are. It’s terrible if your entire letter speaks only about you and nothing about the company.
  • Underselling yourself. Drawing attention to your lack of skills or knowledge is a sure-fire way to not get hired. Focus on what you have and what your future employer will be impressed by.

Always double check your letter before pressing ‘send’. You may spot something in that final check that you missed before. Remember, your resume looks at your past. Your cover letter should highlight your future and tell the recruiter how you will use your past to enhance and achieve your future goals. By applying these to your cover letter, you’ll be well on your way to begin preparing for your interview. If your resume is your elevator pitch, then your cover letter is what will take you to the top floor. Add icing on the “cake” by including your Alison Public Profile to your application and send it along. Your dream job awaits.

Comment on Traditional ways of resolving conflicts by Joao Zeferino Almoco

Comment on Traditional ways of resolving conflicts by Joao Zeferino Almoco

Introduction

This article will discuss some of the means to be utilized in Conflict Resolution. There are several approaches one could take to resolving conflict. This article will focus on the following methods; retortion, reprisal and reconciliation by regional agencies, conciliation and arbitration. We will begin by defining conflict and then we will explore some causes of conflict and approaches one can take in resolution.

What is conflict?

According to Collins dictionary conflict is, “a serious disagreement and argument about something important. If two people or groups are in conflict, they have had a serious disagreement or argument and have not yet reached agreement”. Conflict can also be defined as a situation in which misunderstanding exists between two parties.

What causes conflict?

According to https://www.accipio.com/, possible causes of conflict are:

  1. When two people have different perceptions about something
  2. Differences in religion
  3. When two people have different styles of doing something
  4. When one party violates the right of another party
  5. When one person feels cheated

As mentioned before, there are several ways that conflicts can be resolved. There are two peaceful approached that can be taken; arbitration and conciliation.

Arbitration

Arbitration is considered to be a peaceful method that involves bringing in a third party to help to resolve a conflict between two parties. This person is usually referred to as an arbitrator. It’s the job of an arbitrator, to serve as a go-between, for parties that are at an impasse. Secondly, a judicial settlement of a conflict is another method that may be employed. The court, like the International Court of Justice (ICJ) located in Hague, plays a vital role in ensuring that conflict is brought to an end and has contributed to resolving conflict on a larger scale around the world. For example, this International Court of Justice, played a vital role in resolving the conflicts of several countries, such as Cote d’Ivoire as well as other African nations.

Conciliation

Conciliation speaks to a form of mediation from a third party in an effort to placate the parties of a conflict. This method of conflict resolution may sometimes involve the formulation of a commission by the parties involved, with the members of the commission working to bring the parties to resolution.

Conflicts can also be resolved through coercive means like war, reprisal and retortion.

War

There are times when a conflict seems to be unending between two parties and it only through the rigors of war that such a conflict can be resolved. The Nigerian Civil War also known as the Biafran War, was fought between the government of Nigeria and the secessionist state of Biafra. Biafrans were trying to secede from Nigeria, and consequently the Nigerian government employed the use of force to end the conflict. The Biafrans eventually gave up because the leader of the revolt fled the country. It is believed that sometimes for peace to exist, a war must be fought.

Reprisal

Reprisal, as another means of coercive conflict resolution, speaks to the act or practice of resorting to force; short of war in retaliation, for damage or loss suffered. Reprisal to acts may be deemed illegal if taken alone, but may become legal when adopted by one state in response to the doing of an earlier illegal act by another state.

Retorion

Retortion is a term that is predominantly used in international law and speaks to an act perpetrated by one nation upon another in retaliation for a similar act done by the other nation. It is different from a reprisal in that it is almost always an action in compliance with international law but it can in many instances be considered unfriendly.  For instance, Country A may feel offended by an action of country B. Country A may therefore decide to withdraw its ambassador from country B. South Africans offended Nigeria by executing some of its citizens who were living in the country. In response, Nigeria withdrew its ambassador who was in South Africa.

Conclusion

We can conclude that the means of resolving conflict can be both peaceful and coercive.

How will this affect me as a Civil Engineering professional?

It will not affect my professional at all.

How can the subject be related to Civil Engineering?

It has not related.

Why is it important for me?

It is important to me because, the work of civil engineering will not be possible in an environment where there is so much conflict. The importance of resolving conflict to engineer cannot be over emphasize, this means that civil engineer can only do what he knows how to do when a particular conflict is resolved.

Comment on EDUCATION AS A HUMAN RIGHT by Hugo Frez

Comment on EDUCATION AS A HUMAN RIGHT by Hugo Frez

Education has been affirmed as a fundamental human Right
under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This is after the realization
that education is a prerequisite for the realization of other Human Rights,
such as the Right to Health and Wellbeing; the Right to Freedom of Expression, Freedom
of Religion; and the Right to Access to Clean Water, among others.

Education empowers human beings to enjoy full rounded
development. It aids in poverty reduction and enables improved livelihoods. It enhances
gender parity; and it enhances reduction in child mortality, maternal mortality
and lowers disease burden.

Education as a Human Right entails free, compulsory,
universal and quality primary education; quality secondary education that is
accessible to all, non-discriminative, and quality higher education (UNESCO,
2007).

The definition of Education as a product is the sum
depository of knowledge, skills, and all other cognitive achievements a person
has acquired through formal, informal, structured, or unstructured settings
through which he or she is able to apply in understanding and solving
challenges or problems they encounter.

The definition of Education as a process is the
procedure of acquiring of knowledge, skills, and other cognitive abilities to
equip one to participate in alleviating problems encountered by humans and to
enable continuous improvement of human life. Through education, humans are
equipped with competences that enable them to participate in divine actions
such as environmental protection; sustainable development, such as sound
agricultural practices, and respect for human life; physical conservation and
promotion of social equity.

Through education, humans can nurture a balanced set
of capabilities to be economically productive, to nurture sustainable
livelihoods, contribute to peaceful and democratic societies and enhance
individual well-being in health and wealth. Education enables continuous
conveyance of communally significant experience from proceeding to subsequent
generations. Any method that enables people to improve their status in
whichever sphere of life falls within the domain of education (Arthur, 1991)

Since creation, education has always existed; reasons
for its achievement have remained constant though the means and modes of
delivery have advanced with technological advancements. For instance, whereas
education in the traditional African setup was laced with culture and packaged
through stories, parables, idioms, the aim was to enlighten the recipients by
use of common and familiar occurrences so that they could relate the knowledge
and its intended use.

Today the same education is offered through books and
other ultra-modern media such a digital space. In both cases of delivery, the
need for education remains enlightenment for active participation in solving
human problems as well as for welfare improvement.

In my view, education is achieved through the process
by which information and knowledge is packaged and passed to those learning
from those who have learnt in the society. Knowledge, being the integral
component of education, has been created through continuous discovery of
methods of solving individual and societal problems, as well as methods of
advancing individual and societal welfare.

Through time, these discoveries have been compiled
into a repository of knowledge, skills and competences and have developed into
norms, beliefs, values, habits, and procedures. Through replication and
application of these sets of norms, beliefs, values, habits and procedures,
education is achieved regardless of the mode of delivery (Arundhathi et al,
2016).

For instance, in the mediaeval times, education was passed
through contact and the “seeing is believing” method, but with the advancement
of technology, education is passed remotely through broadcasts,
telecommunications, books, journals, internet and can be passed to multitudes
of people in the whole globe at once.

Furthermore, currently, there is never a need to make
any physical contact for education to be delivered. Occurrence such as the
COVID-19 pandemic have pushed imaginations further in that almost all forms of
knowledge and skills can be passed virtually, and that as technology advances,
there will be no need to physically know those passing on education as long as
you can connect remotely through the digital space.

This is one way that has made the AIU method of
learning unique and admirable. Nowadays, person do not need to drive to school.
It is the other way around – someone will have to drive away from school to
acquire education safely.

In my view, education will be best achieved if we all
agree that everyone is unique, and has something to offer to the world, and
that technology has allowed us this opportunity. We also need to acknowledge that
education can take place in formal or informal settings, and any experience
that has a formative effect on the way one thinks, feels, or acts ought to be
considered education.

Comment on CAN MONEY MAKE YOU HAPPY? by Amiakhor Ejaeta by Fatima Pereira

0
Comment on CAN MONEY MAKE YOU HAPPY? by Amiakhor Ejaeta by Fatima Pereira

Can money buy you happiness? The answer to this question will depend largely on the respondent’s state of mind, economic situation, expectations, values, desires, needs, experiences, and several other factors.

There are several schools of thought on this topic: some agree that money can buy happiness, while others disagree, and yet others believe that the happiness money can buy never lasts for long.

Money can’t buy happiness, but it can make you awfully comfortable while you’re being miserable.” – Claire Luce

Money has never made man happy, nor will it, there is nothing in its nature to produce happiness. The more of it one has, the more one wants.” – Benjamin Franklin

We may never fully understand this saying until we can define what money and happiness are.

What is Money?

The Economists define money as a generally accepted medium of exchange for the purchase of goods and services. This description explains where money originates and how much it is worth.

According to Wikipedia, Money is any item or verifiable record that is generally accepted as payment for goods and services and repayment of debts, such as taxes, in a particular country or socio-economic context.”

What is Happiness?

To many people, happiness can mean different things.

Happiness is an emotional state of mind consisting of feelings of joy, satisfaction, contentment, and fulfillment. Although happiness has many distinct definitions, it is frequently associated with positive emotions and a sense of fulfillment in life.

Joy, gladness, pleasure, contentment, enthusiasm, optimism, and pride are all examples of different types of happiness.

Then, what is the relationship or connection between money and happiness?

Human needs are insatiable and they usually take the form of goods and services. Once a need is met, there is joy, gladness, pride, a positive or pleasant emotion; this can be translated to mean happiness.

If getting a need met by spending money will make one happy, then we can conclude that money can buy you happiness, but to some extent, this is partly because what happiness means to one person is different from what it means to another. Different strokes for different folks, you would say!

Psychologically, the three principles below can be of help if you intend to make a purchase or pay for a service with the intent to having satisfaction or getting happiness:

  1. Wealth does not necessarily lead to happiness – Although having more money translates into having access to much more than your basic needs, it also puts a demand on your time. This is due to the fact that, in order to live up to standard, more time is required as you earn more money and acquire more wealth.  For this reason, you see people taking up two to three jobs a day, attending several meetings, or not having time to spend with family and friends. At the end of the day, you are able to make more money but have little time to rest and be happy.
  • Experiencing and Having – Being able to purchase physical objects, such as vehicles, wristwatches, the latest phones, and so on, brings satisfaction and happiness, but these things quickly become obsolete as new versions are unveiled. On the other hand, having experiences like going for a vacation with family and friends, or attending a get-together, also brings a sense of satisfaction and happiness that tends to last longer. This is because experiences can be remembered, and shared in a way that one is able to re-live the experience, especially pleasant experiences, and this translates into more happiness, just by remembering!
  • Does spending on others makes you Happier? – Researchers have discovered that spending on others gives better satisfaction and happiness than spending on oneself. This is because giving to others, such as through charity or donations, makes you feel better about yourself: this is Happiness!

At this point, it is obvious that having the money to handle your needs is not enough, the satisfaction you gain from meeting the needs, how you go about meeting the need, and several other factors should be taken into consideration if your goal is to achieve happiness at the end of the day.

In summary, everyone responds differently to the issues about Money and Happiness. Balance is the key, and seeking help from financial experts will go a long way to help you give the right answer to the question “Can Money make you Happy”?.
