One of the biggest decisions you’ll make as a parent is deciding to homeschool your children instead of sending them to a private or a traditional public school. Homeschooling is an attractive education option, and many choose it for various reasons. One of these reasons are the subjects available for children that traditional school systems don’t always offer. Some of these are the humanities subjects. The Homeschool Curriculum
The beauty of homeschooling is that you or your children and students are no longer bound by the class structure and format regular schooling follows or prescribes.

These arts can further be categorised in decorative, commercial, and the fine arts. Think museums and the different types of museums you can visit. o Performing Arts
As the name suggests, this is art which is performed in front of an audience and includes music, dance, and drama. Part of these arts are the musical instruments, hair, makeup, costume, and stage props that accompany a performance. Traditionally, this is taught by a certified instructor in a class setup where the voice, body, and facial expressions also have a strong presence on the stage.
o Applied Arts
“Applied arts” refers to the broad spectrum of art that includes the application of aesthetics and design in finding techniques and solutions for everyday practical things. Functionality comes into play in these arts, and this can be found in interior, fashion, and graphic design.

Is it possible to reduce the carbon print with Green Energy Fuel?
This is the same question that Aldo Steinfeld, Professor at ETH Zurich, stated around 15 years ago, and after a lot of work and research, he finally discovered a fantastic answer.
“For the first time, the thermochemical production of kerosene using solar energy, water, and CO2 is demonstrated in a fully integrated solar tower fuel plant. Solar-made kerosene can replace fossil-derived kerosene and further make use of the existing global jet fuel infrastructures and engines, which are particularly critical for the long-haul aviation sector. This pioneer technological demonstration, performed at a pilot scale relevant to industrial implementation, represents a critical milestone on the path toward the production of sustainable aviation fuels”, states the website cell.com in a paper published in its Journal Joule.
For Professor Steinfeld, the results of 15 years of hard work can be summarized in a sentence: “It’s simply thermodynamics”.

Let’s focus on the research: How was the discovery process?
The solar tower fuel plant, realized at IMDEA Energy in Spain, integrates three sub-systems: the solar tower concentrating facility, the solar reactor, and the gas-to-liquid (GtL) unit.
“In a two-year proof-of-concept test atop ETH Zürich’s Machine Laboratory building in Switzerland back in 2019, Steinfeld’s mini solar refinery first showed how the process works, and laid the groundwork to scale the project. Both carbon dioxide (CO2) and water are extracted directly from ambient air and split using solar energy, as Steinfeld describes his work in a new paper, published late last month in the journal Joule. The result is syngas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, which is then processed into kerosene”, states Popular Mechanics.

The website for the European Commission highlights that “At the moment the technology is still at the experimental stage, but researchers at the EU-funded SOLAR-JET project have proven for the first time that it works, and will now investigate whether it can be scaled-up commercially.
If they are successful, the breakthrough could mean that carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, could become the raw material for petrol, diesel, and jet fuel kerosene.
‘This technology means we might one day produce cleaner and plentiful fuel for planes, cars, and other forms of transport,’ said Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, the European Commissioner for Research, Innovation, and Science. ‘This could greatly increase energy security, and turn one of the main greenhouse gases responsible for global warming into a useful resource”.

Top 6 Programming Languages for Chatbot Development

If you’ve ever had to contact customer support for anything like a missing food delivery order or an internet outage, chances are, you’ve encountered a chatbot. While many companies offer support from people who can chat with you in real time, the wait times for that kind of service can often be frustrating. That’s where chatbots come in.
Chatbots can handle customer questions in seconds; and when they are asked a complex question, they can forward the chat session to a live agent. Companies see this as a big win: They can satisfy customers, keep them on their site, and save money on the support staff they have to hire. It’s no wonder why the global chatbot market, which was valued at $17 billion in 2020, is expected to grow to over $102 billion by 2026.
In other words, Chatbot Developers — people who create the software to automate communications for chatbots — are in high demand. So if you are looking for an exciting programming field where you will have plenty of opportunities, chatbot development is a good choice. To get into the field, you’ll need to have a good command of the programming languages used to develop chatbots, because certain languages are more suited to chatbot development than others.
6 programming languages for chatbots
Chatbots use machine learning (which gives computer systems the ability to learn from data) and natural language processing (the branch of computer science that gives computers the ability to understand text and spoken words). There are several programming languages that support these features either themselves or through third-party libraries — let’s take a look at them.
1. Python
Python is a preferred language for data projects, machine learning projects, and chatbot projects. It has a simple syntax that even beginner developers find easy to read and understand. Because Python isn’t as verbose as many other languages, it’s a relatively simple language to use to prototype chatbots and doesn’t require the extra compilation step that some programming languages need. Python also has an extensive selection of libraries for machine learning and natural language processing (NLP), including the powerful Natural Language Toolkit (NLTK), which many developers consider to be the best NLP library.

2. Java
Java is also a widely used language for chatbot projects because it’s a general-purpose, object-oriented language that is platform-independent and portable. One of Java’s claims to fame is that programs written in it can run on any system that has the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) installed, making it a versatile language. Java allows multi-threading, resulting in higher performance than many other languages in this list. It’s also used widely in enterprise development — meaning a chatbot written in Java can be easily integrated with enterprise ecosystems. Java also has a large selection of third-party libraries for machine learning and NLP, including Stanford Library NLP and Apache Open NLP.

3. Ruby
Ruby is another popular programming language for chatbots. It’s a high-level, object-oriented programming language that can make building chatbots simple. Like Python, its syntax is easy to read and understand. Ruby also supports a common algorithm design technique called dynamic programming, where you can modify the code at runtime to fit a system’s changing needs. Many developers swear by the language because of its clean syntax and third-party libraries that are user-friendly and well-documented. Ruby has a wide variety of machine learning and NLP libraries, including a complete framework called Stealth that was designed from the ground up for developing chatbots.

4. C++
You can also use C++ to create chatbots. It has the fastest speed of the programming languages in this list, so it’s often used when performance is a priority. However, it’s also a low-level programming language, so this increase in performance comes with a tradeoff. C++ is not the easiest language to learn, and there are not many high-level libraries in the language specifically for building chatbots, which means you will have to build a big part of a chatbot from scratch. Still, it’s unbeatable when it comes to speed and performance.

5. PHP
PHP was created for developing websites and web applications and has been around as long as web development has been. It’s also a great language for building chatbots. One of the advantages of PHP is that a lot of developers know it, and many websites already use the language, which makes it simpler to integrate a PHP chatbot into existing systems. In 2021, W3Techs reported that PHP was used in 79.2% of all the websites where they knew the server-side language, making it one of the most popular programming languages. There is also a framework in PHP called Botman, which provides all the tools you need to build a chatbot and integrate with other PHP web development frameworks like Laravel.

6. Clojure
Clojure is another programming language that is popular for chatbot development. It runs on the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and can integrate seamlessly with existing systems written in Java. Clojure is a functional programming language that is a dialect of Lisp. It uses recursive functions (which refer to themselves for execution) instead of loops to iterate through lists and arrays, a feature preferred by many developers for the data processing involved in NLP.

As a teacher, you carry the responsibility of sharing and shaping the minds of your students. The relationship between a student and their teacher sets the tone for improved engagement, achievement, and draws out their desire to learn. What better way to explore this relationship than by speaking to a member of this noble profession. This month, our Alison Publisher Spotlight is on accomplished teacher and author, Leigh Faulkner.
Please share with our learners a bit about your background.
I started my teaching career in my home province of Nova Scotia, Canada, when I was eighteen years old. Three years later I became a school principal. After twenty-seven years in public schools, I began university teaching – first in the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, Canada, then as a volunteer English curriculum developer in the teachers college of Danang University, in Danang, Vietnam, and finally, until retirement, as a tenured professor in Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, in Beppu, Kyushu, Japan. Since my official retirement, I’ve developed and facilitated workplace education programs, carried out organizational training needs assessments, and tutored public school, university, and apprenticeship students. For the last few years, I’ve been developing online courses, like those here on Alison.
In terms of my own education, I have a BA, a BEd, an MA, and an EdD, along with workplace education certification.
How did you get into teaching, education, and training?
As a child I was fascinated with airplanes. Career wise, I hoped to go into the air force and become a pilot. However, circumstances changed that because I was colourblind – and colourblind people do not fly planes, at least in the Canadian military. So, I made a last minute decision to attend the Normal College one-year program. In retrospect, I think it was a good career choice.
You’ve been a self-publisher with Alison for several years. What do you enjoy most about publishing on this platform?
The business model is student-friendly. Students around the world who might not be able to pay for courses have access to a vast array of courses here on Alison. A second powerful recommendation for Alison, in my opinion, is the attention to quality. What lessons or takeaways have you learned as a self-publisher on Alison?
Well, I always thought that I gave careful attention to each stage of the course development process, however, I’ve gained a new appreciation of the need to give extra careful attention to detail while creating courses. A simple example is the need to check carefully that audio and video are perfectly synced. I guess another takeaway is “Don’t make assumptions!”
How has being a self-publisher on Alison changed or impacted your life?
I’ve been a life-long teacher, and being a self-publisher on Alison has allowed me to continue teaching after my classroom career came to an end. I appreciate that.
How has the adjustment from face-to-face to remote video tutoring been for you?
I miss the face-to-face interaction, but, overall, the transition to remote video tutoring has been relatively easy. I enjoy technology, so crafting courses has been satisfying. In terms of one-to-one tutoring, I found that the wide range of online resources that the student and I could access enriched the tutoring experience.
How should learners approach remote video tutoring and learning?
That’s a difficult question, since people have developed a range of successful learning skills and may have to adjust them when taking online courses. Learning takes effort and time, so I think that learners need to be patient.
Learners need to consciously make connections between what they are learning and what they already know; in this way, they provide a foundation for the new learning.
Another thing to keep in mind is that no course contains everything there is to know about a topic, so the learner should be ready to consult other sources for additional information or different perspectives.
Who should take your courses?
Some of my courses are designed for students in high school or university. “Mastering the Academic Desk Research Paper” and “Deep Reading” are examples. “Facilitating Adult Learning Groups,” on the other hand, is for people, perhaps in business or in adult education, who want to understand more about the principles and processes of adult group facilitation, especially when the groups are noticeably diverse.
I would say that the course “Foundations of Effective Oral Communication” is for everyone from teen to adult. The course “Appreciating Metaphor” is intended for anyone who wants to explore the English language in a way and to a depth that perhaps they’ve never undertaken before.
Why should people be invested in continuing/furthering their studies?
I have a tagline on my personal website. It says, “Education changes everything.” I believe that’s true. I think that people can keep learning and growing and building a better future for themselves. I think there is an element of the unexpected, too, since we never know when a simple experience we’ve had or something we’ve learned will become important in defining the next life choice or career choice.
What’s the importance of studying your courses for those who aren’t pursuing careers in academia?
I like to think that all my courses are for those who are “pursuing a career in life.” That may sound flippant, but I don’t mean it to be. I have a firm belief that everything we learn, no matter how seemingly insignificant, has a place in helping to determine who we are and what our capacities are and what we can accomplish in life.
What feedback have you received from learners about your course?
I would welcome feedback, but I am still waiting!
For individuals interested in taking one of your courses, what can they expect to get from it?
In the course “Mastering the Academic Desk Research Paper,” for example, I map out in detail the processes involved, from assignment analysis, through development of a research question or thesis statement, information gathering and analysis, paper organization, the qualities of effective writing, editing and revision, and, finally, submission.
What words of advice would you give someone who would like to become a publisher on Alison?
I would say:
- Take stock of what you know well and what you have an interest in.
- Be prepared to carry out research to support—or correct—your ideas and to expand on them.
- Pay close attention to how you organize the information; there needs to be logic to the course development.
- Welcome feedback; your PAM and review team are tremendous supporters.
How does workplace training assessment affect employees and teams?
As a workplace educator, I’ve performed many organizational needs assessments (ONAs). These are designed to identify what skills workers have and where the skills gaps are. Central to the process is the awareness that effective teams are crucial to the success of an organization. As a result, whenever I write an ONA report, I always frame it in terms of individual and team development.
By the way, most of the courses I’ve recommended in the ONA reports are forty-hour courses spread over several weeks, with adequate time for participants to absorb the ideas and apply them.
What has been your most important lesson or discovery when it comes to education programmes?
There are so many, but one I haven’t mentioned yet is the value I place on the knowledge and skills that participants bring to the programs. I think that participants, themselves, especially within a cooperative or collaborative structure, are the single most important resource for program success.
Students learn from their teachers/tutors. Any lessons you have learned from your students?
There have been many lessons, and one of the most important is that I don’t know everything. Maybe when I started teaching, I thought that the teacher’s role was to be the source and dispenser of all knowledge, but not anymore. I think I learn something from each and every learner I work with. I’ve especially learned that humility isn’t a bad quality for an educator.
What else can Alison and its learners look forward to from you in the coming year to two?
Currently, I’m working on a course on academic learning resources. Among other things, I taught study skills at university. I came to the conclusion that many of the resources that can enrich the academic experience go underutilized. On the reverse side, I noted that students who took advantage of learning resources were more well-rounded learners. In other words, the additional effort needed to use available learning resources paid rich dividends. I want to capture this in the course.
Any last words, advice, or wisdom you’d like to share with our learners?
Be hungry! Learn everything you can. Enjoy the learning journey! And, above all, value yourself as a learner!

A brief explanation of the cognitive and neuroscience
We have an excellent neuroscientific understanding (1) of how long-term memories are stored and made more robust by retrieval practice. Explicit memory represents the memories and knowledge that we can consciously retrieve.
The subset of explicit memory, known as semantic memory, is the long-term memory of facts and concepts. These memories are stored in the synapses of a relatively small collection of neurons that may be close together or dispersed throughout the neocortex of our cerebral hemispheres.
These neuronal collections, which many scientists call engrams, are activated when we retrieve that long-term memory into working memory. When we retrieve this memory, the engram is activated. Because of our brain’s astonishing neuroplasticity, the synapses in that engram are strengthened, and even more incredible; additional synapses may develop. We have been able to directly image this effect (2) in living lab animals. Whenever you retrieve a memory, you make it more easily retrievable in the future. This is a prime reason why retrieval practice strengthens our ability to recall that piece of knowledge.
There is however another effect to consider. Each time we retrieve a memory, we do so in a unique context. This context is a combination of the place, time, emotional state, other thoughts and events, current sensory inputs, and many other potential parameters.
When we consciously retrieve a memory, the unique current context may create or activate engrams that overlap the engram of the memory we’re retrieving. After all, a neuron may have many thousands of synaptic connections. These create opportunities for a neuron to participate in many different engrams. This explains why one thought leads to another. Our brains think by association. It’s the embodiment of the old neuroscientific maxim, “neurons that wire together, fire together.”
Every time you retrieve a memory, the current context may create a new pathway for retrieving that memory in the future. The more routes we create through retrieval practice in unique contexts, the easier it’ll be in the future to bring that memory into consciousness on demand.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that there is another important type of memory called procedural memory which with worthy of a separate discussion, but we’ll leave that for another day.

What to include in a Machine Learning Engineer portfolio
A Machine Learning Engineer’s portfolio is similar to any other technical portfolio. You’ll want to include some information about you and your history in the machine learning field. Here are the basics:
Bio
This section allows you to tell recruiters more about who you are — the type of information that may not fit in a technical resume. Consider highlighting your passion for machine learning and explain why you got into the field. You can also include details about your current projects, your tech stack, and where you see yourself in the future.
Contact information
You’ll also want to let hiring managers know how to reach you, so don’t forget to add your name, email address, and phone number at the top of your portfolio. Then, you can use these insights to create projects that will stand out. It helps to pick a few diverse ones so you can add more variety to your portfolio. You don’t want every project to use the same type of data set or make your skillset look more narrow than it actually is.
Use the job descriptions and your interests to build projects you’re curious about. Then, when you’re designing your projects, keep in mind the following tips:
- Keep it relatively small. Your portfolio should include several projects, so try not to spend too much time on a single one.

If you already have some web development skills, your own domain, and a hosting provider, then building and hosting your own portfolio site is a great option. But if you don’t, no worries. Most Machine Learning Engineer roles don’t require web dev knowledge.

If you use Jupyter notebooks in your project, Github will automatically render the results of your notebooks, including charts and graphs. 8 Tips For Getting Hired After An Engineering Apprenticeship or Internship

When you’re trying to land your dream job in tech, getting your “foot in the door” at an organization is half the battle. One common way that aspiring developers break into tech and land entry-level positions is through apprenticeships and internships.
These programs allow people from non-traditional backgrounds to work (and get paid!) as an engineer at an organization for a period of time, with the goal of ultimately getting hired at the end. An internship or apprenticeship is a great opportunity to demonstrate your coding skills through hands-on engineering projects, forge relationships with devs who could become your colleagues, and experience what it’s really like to work at an organization. However, depending upon the specific program, a job offer is not 100% guaranteed for all apprentices and interns.
Here’s some advice from Codecademy Software Engineers who made the leap from apprentice to full-time employee. Whether you’re wrapping up a summer internship or just want some advice for an entry-level position, these tips will help you stand out and boost your chances of getting hired.
Ask questions
If you find yourself apologizing for asking “dumb questions,” we totally get it — but there’s nothing wrong with having questions and being curious. Learning and asking questions is a hugely important part of being a Software Engineer, so “you should get comfortable doing it,” says Ana Harris, a Software Engineer at Codecademy.
As an apprentice or intern, you might worry that your questions will reveal your inexperience, explains Sylvana Santos, a Software Engineer at Codecademy. Don’t let that fear keep you from asking important questions: The sooner you ask, the sooner you’ll get unstuck. “Always ask questions and don’t be afraid to feel silly,” Sylvana says. “Most of the time, you don’t sound silly at all. You just think you do.”
Act like it’s the “real deal”
Your workload as an apprentice or intern probably won’t change majorly after going full-time, says Jenesh Napit, a Software Engineer at Codecademy. Even though you’re “just an apprentice,” you should approach your work as though you’re already hired, Jenesh says.
“As an intern or apprentice we can often think that we are not capable of doing the work of other full-time engineers and that we are getting easy tasks, but don’t be fooled — you’re getting the real deal,” Jenesh says. “So just do your best and don’t think of yourself as ‘just’ an intern or apprentice. You are fully capable and ready for the next step in your career.”
Set goals based on competencies
Apprenticeship programs are often structured so that participants have a clear understanding of the competencies they need to reach in order to be considered for a full-time offer at the end. (A “competency” is another word for the measurable knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors that define success in a role.)
Ana recalls working with her mentor and manager from day one to establish those competencies and create goals that aligned with them. “We had a 30- 60- and 90-day plan, and we checked in on my progress every week,” she says.
Work with as many people as you can
Sylvana made a goal at the start of her apprenticeship to meet with as many engineers as possible, even ones who weren’t on her direct team, so she could learn about the different roles in the organization. She also mentioned this goal to her manager, who was able to keep an eye out for opportunities to work across different departments and could help facilitate introductions.
A good ice breaker if you want to get to know people outside of your department is to ask someone what they’re working on that they’re excited about. “I was very curious about what other people were working on,” Sylvana says. “I would be like, ‘Hey, I noticed you’re working on this thing. Would you mind if I shadow you and see what you’re up to?’”
Support your peers
The high-stakes nature of today’s job market can make you feel like you’re competing against your fellow interns and apprentices. While there may not be a guaranteed job offer for everyone at the end of the program, it’s important to foster a supportive environment with the other apprentices and interns, Sylvana says.
“We would help each other out if we got stuck, share tips, and give each other opportunities,” she recalls. “I think that was a big part of what makes this program successful and helped me to get the offer at the end.” Plus, you never know who you may end up working with down the line.
Get feedback from your mentor
It’s pretty standard for an intern or apprentice to get paired with a mentor who manages and guides them. Your mentor is there to help you, so “try to get their feedback and support from the very start and work with them towards a full-time position,” Ana suggests.
Mentors can also help with the less technical aspects of your career development. For example, Jenesh wishes he would have focused more on his soft skills, like communication, during his apprenticeship. “It’s hard to practice soft skills,” he says.
Keep in mind: Your mentor is also getting practice managing you, so everyone wins, Sylvana says. “A big part of being a Senior Engineer is enabling engineers who are more junior than you,” she says. “Helping people get unstuck and advising on projects is integral to them being able to move up [in their careers] as well.”
Voice your opinions
People experience impostor syndrome at every stage of their career — but it’s especially relevant when you’re first starting out. Looking back, Ana says she struggled to confidently express her opinions as an apprentice because she was so afraid of being wrong.
“I never in the past had issues with confidence or voicing my opinions, but in this particular situation — as a bootcamp grad, immigrant, non-native English speaker — I thought that I didn’t have enough knowledge and experience to be listened to,” Ana says. “Now I can tell that that approach was wrong, and that my way of thinking and understanding of engineering was most of the time correct.”
Integrating with the company where you’re interning or apprenticing can feel awkward at first (especially if you’re working remotely), but you should take advantage of any opportunities to connect with other people within your organization. Are there non-work activities that you could participate in, or clubs and ERGs that are open to apprentices?
For example, Sylvana recalls joining a book club and attending brown bag talks as an apprentice, which helped her get face time with engineers outside her team. “That was a really great way for me to show, like: Not only am I invested on the technical side and helping us get work done from an engineering perspective, but I also really like engaging in community, asking questions in those spaces, and sharing knowledge,” she says.
Hopefully this advice from people who successfully navigated the apprentice-to-engineer pipeline will help you feel confident going into an apprenticeship or internship. Remember: There’s no single path to finding a more fulfilling work life.
