Finding out that you didn’t get a promotion that you spent time and energy preparing for can be a huge bummer. You might’ve been daydreaming about getting a bump in pay or envisioning all the exciting work you’d get to do with a more senior job title, only to find yourself back at the drawing board.  

So should you dust yourself off and try again or start looking for new jobs? It’s complicated, because everyone has different circumstances to consider after they’re passed over for a promotion. You should definitely talk to your manager, get some answers about why you weren’t promoted, and create a plan, explains Francesca Galbo, Codecademy Talent Director.

It might feel like a daunting conversation to have when your emotions are already raw, but it’s necessary: “Unless you ask and communicate, you will never get what you want,” Francesca says. Here’s an actionable plan that you can use to keep your head up and land that promotion the next time around.

Find out why

In the heat of the moment, it’s easy to feel defensive or jump to conclusions about why you didn’t get a promotion (or agonize over why someone else did). But you won’t know the actual reasoning until you have an honest conversation with your team leader.

You have every right to get feedback on why you weren’t promoted, Francesca says. Keep in mind that you typically need to meet at least 75% of the competencies at the level above your current role in order to get promoted, according to Asif Kumandan, Codecademy’s People Operations Business Partner.

Ask your manager to point out the gaps in your knowledge base: Are there specific programming languages or technical skills that you need to master in order to achieve those higher-level competencies? Is it a matter of honing your leadership skills or spending more time mentoring junior members of your team? Or do you need more experience collaborating with other teams within the organization?

Make a plan (and put it in writing)

Once you have a clear understanding of why you didn’t get the promotion you were vying for, it’s important to chart your path forward. Talk to your manager about the specific steps you need to take and determine a realistic timeframe based on your organization’s performance and compensation review cycle, Francesca says.

Set some SMART (stands for “specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound”) goals and objectives with your manager. If you’re not sure how to broach the subject again, Francesca suggests saying something like: “Can we discuss my potential trajectory and up-leveling if I’m able to accomplish these tasks in 3-6 months?”

Show tangible growth

Make sure to get your plan in writing. That way, you can reference it when it’s time to check in again, Francesca says. “As long as you have specific metrics down on paper, you can point to them and say, ‘Hey, remember when we had this discussion?’” she says.

In the meantime, keep a running list of your contributions and positive feedback you’ve received, so you have tangible points to use as you build a business case for your promotion. This could include everything from establishing a more efficient code review process for your team of devs, to learning a new framework, or becoming the go-to person for debugging code.

Think about what you want from your career

For some folks, getting passed over for a promotion might be the push you need to start exploring opportunities at other organizations or planning a career change. Rather than having a knee-jerk response, take time to reflect on the feedback you’re given, what you want in your career, and whether there’s room for you to grow at your current organization.

Francesca’s advice is to run towards a new job, rather than away from the one you already have. “You shouldn’t be immediately fleeing just because the performance review cycle didn’t turn out the way you wanted it to,” she says. “You have to at least try to have a conversation first before you decide, Okay, this is no longer serving me.”

Whether you use iCloud to store photos or you put your files into Google Drive, you’ve probably relied on cloud computing in one way or another. Cloud computing refers to storing and accessing data and programs on the internet, instead of on your computer or your computer’s hard drive.

When you think about how ubiquitous the cloud has become in our lives, it’s easy to see why companies hire cloud computing professionals, specifically, to help them efficiently share information and accomplish tasks by accessing information from anywhere.

To that end, salaries for cloud computing professionals tend to be relatively high. ZipRecruiter estimates that the average annual cloud computing salary in the U.S. is around $119,779. Of course, your individual pay can vary. Let’s take a look at the range you might expect to make in the cloud computing field, based on a few variables.

Factors that affect a cloud computing salary

As with any other job, there are a few factors that play into your salary. For starters, the more professional experience you have in the field, the higher pay you can expect. Plus, specific job titles can come with accompanying salary expectations (more on that below).

Educational background can also play a part. You might generally be able to get a higher salary for your first job if you have a bachelor’s degree in cloud computing. That said, a specialized college degree is certainly not a prerequisite, and there are many paths to becoming a cloud computing professional.

For example, online courses can give you the foundational skills you need to get in the door. A big part of cloud computing is being familiar with database work, something that SQL can help you with. Learning other relevant programming languages, like Java and Python, can also give you an edge. The cloud computing world is fairly vast, which means that there are lots of opportunities to break into the field. Of course, that means that each role has its own salary range. Keep in mind that salaries often vary from company to company, so there’s no one-size-fits-all in cloud computing. But knowing the average pay for a job title can help you negotiate a salary that feels fair. Here are some roles within cloud computing and the accompanying average pay:

Computer and Information Systems Manager

A Computer and Information Systems Manager is responsible for analyzing a company’s computer needs and making recommendations based on this information. In this role, you’ll help plan, coordinate, and direct cloud systems and recommend the best services. According to Zippia, the average salary for this position is $114,028 a year.

Computer Network Architect

A Computer Network Architect, also referred to as a Cloud Architect, is responsible for designing and building data communication networks, like local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and Intranets. In addition to knowing the foundations of cloud computing, it’s also helpful to know some cybersecurity basics, which you can learn in our Introduction to Cybersecurity course. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that an average annual salary for this position is $120,520.

Computer Systems Analyst

A Computer Systems Analyst studies an organization’s computer systems (including cloud systems) and designs ways to improve their efficiency. According to Glassdoor, the average salary for this position is $103,630 annually.

Cloud Administrator

A solid background in cloud computing is essential for Cloud Administrators, who maintain the functionality of cloud systems. In this role, they tackle transitioning locally hosted infrastructure to the cloud, and customize cloud environments to meet a company’s needs. Glassdoor reports that Cloud Administrators have an average annual salary of about $88,649.

Cloud Engineer

A Cloud Engineer is a Software Engineer who specializes in cloud software, and is responsible for overseeing cloud migration and maintaining the new cloud system. The average salary in the United States, according to Indeed, is $121,118, but can depend on experience and location. As with all software engineering roles, having a large knowledge base of programming languages in your toolkit can boost salary prospects.

Cloud Consultant

A Cloud Consultant helps a company identify and act on their potential cloud needs. Indeed reports that a Cloud Consultant salary is an average of $124,074 per year.

Daniel Wei, 15, from Marvin Ridge High School in Waxhaw, N.C., chose an article from the U.S. News section headlined “One Small Step for Democracy in a ‘Live Free or Die’ Town” and wrote:

What happened in Croydon, N.H., is happening all over America — people are realizing how little their voices matter. My civic literacy teacher has always urged us to get involved, to encourage our parents to vote, to actively support issues on social media and, eventually, to vote ourselves.

Many of my classmates, however, do not care about politics — but the parallels to Croydon reveal the perils of this approach. Croydonites passively allowed an outspoken political minority to make all decisions for them, leading to a halving of their school’s budget and the slashing of extracurricular activities. Today, we are seeing similar trends unfold on a national scale.

Take the recent Supreme Court decision to curb the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority to check emissions for power plants, which goes against the wishes of 80 percent of Pew-surveyed Americans. Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that one of the most conservative courts in American history would make a decision pandering only to its billionaire stakeholders rather than considering ordinary citizens.

So, how can we galvanize ourselves to rectify this mistake? Protesting could work, but it may not be enough. Instead, we must emulate the people of Croydon — who, through targeted community activism and patient participation in local government, were able to reverse their school’s budget cuts.

If you’re thinking about getting into game development, there are different paths you can take — you can try to find a full-time game development role or go freelance. While full-time employment certainly has its benefits, being a Freelance Game Developer can offer flexibilities like setting your own hours, or working fully remotely.

That being said, there are nuances to being a Game Developer and being a Freelance Game Developer, specifically. Let’s take a look at what Game Developers do, the qualifications you’ll need in order to be one, and dive into how to build a career as a Freelance Game Developer.

What do Game Developers do?

Game Developers create concepts and designs for computer and video games played on mobile phones, tablets, desktop computers, and gaming consoles. They may also be involved in the technical side of development, which means they code and program the game as well as test and maintain it.

Developers also need to pay attention to things that fall outside of technical and computing areas, like the mood or feel of the game, the sound effects, who the target audience is, how the game could be marketed, and the artistic look of the characters and environments of the game.

What qualifications do Game Developers need?

The essential qualification of game development is programming. So while you don’t necessarily need a degree to be a Game Developer, you can’t be one unless you are proficient in programming. You’ll need to be familiar with the languages most frequently used to code games, including C++, Java, Python, JavaScript, and HTML5.

Beyond these languages, a Game Developer should have math and physics knowledge to translate their ideas into the game’s experiences. Developers should know how to document their work and communicate with supervisors or teams about the game or their ideas. They should also be versed in gaming engines like Unity and Unreal, which are the frameworks used to build games.

There are a few ways to earn experience as a game developer. You could build your own games and put them into a portfolio to show potential employers — here are some tips for how to create a Game Developer portfolio. You could also gain experience with internships or game-tester roles at a gaming company to get a foot in the door.

Freelance vs. full-time

Generally, there are basic differences between working full-time for a single employer and freelancing for multiple companies or clients for any kind of computing or technology development. The first obvious difference is that Game Developers who work for a single company full-time are solely focused on that company’s product(s). Freelance Game Developers, on the other hand, work on projects independently and likely balance a mix of companies and products over time.

Those who work full-time for a company benefit from a consistent stream of work, which can make them experts in a specific kind of programming for a specific purpose. Freelancers may need to learn new practices, programming, and ways of working, depending on the requirements of the jobs or projects they are given.

Full-time roles generally offer more stability, and if you want to eventually be a freelancer, starting in a full-time role can enable you to get experience, build up a portfolio of work, and gain contacts — all of which make it easier to start freelancing.

Freelancing, on the other hand, has some great perks, like more flexibility and more autonomy in the projects you take on. If you’re the type of person who likes to work on a variety of projects, rather than focusing on just one, freelancing is a good way to diversify your day-to-day. Not to mention, if you’re looking for a full-time job and haven’t gotten one yet, freelance or part-time work may be an opportunity to showcase your skills and pay the bills in the meantime.

How to find work as a Freelance Game Developer

Without a track record, trying to find game development work can be very challenging, Dim Bulb Games founder Johnnemann Nordhagen told Forbes in a 2019 interview. Veteran developers most likely can land work based on their reputation, their portfolio, and their contacts, while developers who are newer to freelance game development might find it useful to browse project boards like Upwork, Fiverr, and Freelancer.com.

Either way, Freelance Game Developers also need to think about how they are, in effect, operating as a one-person business, so they must also take on sales and finance functions. This means selling clients on their ability to complete projects, administering their income tax, determining how much to charge clients, and setting and enforcing boundaries and contracts with clients concerning payment terms and delivery milestones.

It’s also important to note that a Freelance Game Developer is different than an Independent Game Developer, as game designer David Fried noted to Quora in 2016. A Freelance Developer is working for others, while an independent might just be one person, but they have creative control over whatever projects they do — and a stake in their success or failure. Fried adds that Freelance Game Developers should be prepared for lean times and try to save funds from their earnings to cover these times.

As Ehfaz Rezwan, a coder with nine years of experience, shared on our forum: “Most people applying to projects on sites [sites like Upwork and Fiverr] will do so by copy/pasting an existing cover letter. What I do instead is research on what the client wants. I’ll take an average of 3 days to write up a detailed proposal, highlighting intricately EXACTLY what I plan to deliver.”

Moral of the story? When you’re a Freelance Game Developer, it’s not just about your tech skills — you need to prepare to write proposals and sell yourself on a regular basis. So sending a generic, existing cover letter or application for a project doesn’t show what you can do or how you, specifically, would do it. In addition to proactively applying to projects, it’s also a good idea to have a professional website, complete with a programmer bio that explains your particular approach to and passion for the work. This can legitimize you to prospective clients and set you apart from your competition.

If you’re considering a career as a Back-End Developer, you might’ve heard about Node.js. Node.js is an open-source, server-side runtime built on Google Chrome’s V8 JavaScript Engine.

Before Node.js, the programming language JavaScript could only be executed in the browser. Developers had to rely on other languages for server-side development, including Apache HTTP Server, Python, PHP, and Java. After it was developed in 2009 by Ryan Dahl, Node.js allowed developers to run JavaScript on a server or locally on their computer.

This quickly made Node.js an extremely popular platform because it gave Front-End Developers the ability to write back-end code for their applications in the same language — and it’s still popular today, ranking first in Stack Overflow’s list of the top web frameworks and technologies. What is Node.js used for?

Node.js can be used for all types of applications, but it’s commonly found in back-end, real-time, and IoT (Internet of Things) applications.

Back-end applications

As we explained earlier, Node.js enables developers to use JavaScript in both the back end and the front end. This makes it popular with companies who would prefer to work with one programming language across their tech stack.

It’s also well-suited for microservices architecture, which involves breaking up a large monolithic service into smaller services that can scale easily. Many companies — both large and small — have switched from back-end services written in other programming languages to Node.js. Studies show that it’s currently used in over 30 million websites.

Real-time applications

Another common use-case for Node.js is real-time applications. Node.js is event-driven and asynchronous, meaning it handles heavy input/output operations quickly and efficiently.

This makes it perfect for real-time applications like chat apps and chatbots. Socket.IO is a Node.js library used in chat and other real-time applications because it allows bidirectional  communication between a browser and a server. And when more processing power is needed, Node.js microservices can scale more quickly.

In 2018, Netflix switched many of its APIs to Node.js to make streaming more efficient. Its asynchronous, non-blocking input/output abilities make it the perfect choice to stream videos and music without buffering or slowing down.

Node.js is also a great platform for IoT development, which has been growing in recent years. IoT devices are constantly sending data back to a server for processing. Node.js can process the billions of concurrent requests created by IoT devices and process event data seamlessly without bogging down.

  • Scalable architecture: Node.js features allow microservices architecture to break an application into multiple services to scale up.
  • High-performance for real-time applications: The single-threaded, event-driven architecture of Node.js allows it to process many concurrent requests without slowing down the application.
  • Saves development time and money: When you use Node.js for your server-side code, you only need JavaScript developers to work on both the front-end code and the back-end code instead of hiring two separate teams.

What are the disadvantages of Node.js?

Like any other technology, Node.js also has some disadvantages. They include:

  • Lowered performance for heavy computing tasks: The single-threaded, event-driven features of Node.js aren’t well-suited to heavy processing tasks. Node.js added “worker threads” in 2018, but it still falls short of other programming languages when it comes to CPU-bound tasks.
  • Frequent API changes: The API for Node.js changes frequently when there are updates to the runtime. This often means that code written for one version of Node.js may not work for a new version and will have to be updated.
  • Inconsistent NPM libraries: NPM is a package manager that Node.js uses for third-party libraries. While many of these libraries are top-notch, some can be of poor quality and not documented well.
  • More demand than developers available: The demand for Node.js developers is growing faster than the pool of developers who know the technology. This means it can be hard for businesses to find the right developers, but it’s also a good thing if you’re considering becoming a Node.js developer because your skills will be in demand.

The Most Useful Programming Languages for Business Analysts

Business Analysts spend a lot of time pouring over spreadsheets and putting together slide presentations. But these roles are evolving as more complex data streams and advanced analysis, like data analytics, become more common.

That’s why it’s helpful to have some background programming knowledge. As a Business Analyst, strong programming skills can help you leverage powerful tools that streamline day-to-day tasks and set yourself apart in a competitive job market.

Ahead, we’ll explore five programming languages that you might want to consider learning if you want to be a Business Analyst.

1. SQL

Structured Query Language (SQL) is a programming language used to manage relational databases. And since Business Analysts spend so much time searching through databases, SQL should be the first addition to your toolkit.

With SQL, you can easily query and extract data from databases to analyze in a spreadsheet program or with one of the other programming languages noted below. Plus, its simplicity and easy-to-understand syntax make it relatively easy to learn.

2. Python

You also might want to consider learning Python. Business analytics involves working with increasingly larger datasets that are beyond the capabilities of traditional spreadsheet programs, and Python makes it easier to process and analyze big data.

It also has statistical modeling capabilities that allow Business Analysts to make much more sophisticated demand and price forecasts. Python even makes data collection faster by easily integrating with SQL databases and automating tasks like web scraping — and its powerful machine learning libraries, like scikit-learn and TensorFlow, help detect trends and patterns from big data. And libraries like seaborn help communicate data insights and results with data visualization tools.

3. R

Like Python, R is an excellent tool for working with big data, and it can also be used for machine learning and complex statistical analysis. It also offers thousands of libraries that give Business Analysts access to tools for time-series analysis, forecasting, and advanced data visualization.

In fact, one of R’s biggest advantages is its sophisticated data visualization tools, which allow you to easily create interactive graphs for websites, report-ready panels of multiple graphs with comments, or customized PDFs.

4. VBA

Not every Business Analyst needs to learn VBA (Visual Basic for Applications), but it can be helpful. Imagine how many monthly, weekly, or daily reports you might need to prepare as a Business Analyst. Sure, they all have different information, but you can save yourself a lot of time with VBA when they’re formatted in the same way.

Business Analysts use VBA to generate custom summary tables in Excel, periodic reports in Word, or slide decks in PowerPoint. And since everything in Microsoft Office is integrated, it’s easy to combine everything — for example, creating a monthly report based on data in Excel, then using the contents of that report to automatically generate slides with bullet points in PowerPoint. Business Analysts who know VBA can save themselves a lot of time in their daily tasks.

5. The language of your team

While Business Analysts aren’t expected to get into software development, it does help to learn a bit about the language your company or team uses every day.

Are you working for a start-up game developer? Learn the basics of C++. Applying to an Android app developer? Pick up some Go or Kotlin. If you already know one or more of the programming languages above, it’ll be easier for you to pick up on some of the other languages used in software development.

When you can grasp the fundamentals of the code your team uses, it’s easier to understand the impact of business decisions on the technical side of things. It also helps build a better relationship with your colleagues and teammates when you’re willing to “speak” their language — literally.

Order matters

When it comes to learning programming languages for Business Analysts, some languages are more in-demand than others.

SQL is at the top of the list. In fact, most hiring managers will rank your SQL knowledge higher than any other language.

After mastering SQL, we recommend learning Python or R. These languages will round out your Business Analyst technical skills by allowing you to do more in-depth statistical analysis and generate sophisticated data visualizations.

Finally, learning VBA can potentially be a great way to work more efficiently with creating spreadsheet summaries, reports, and other administrative tasks if your team uses the Microsoft suite.
