Each Wednesday we shine a spotlight on five student activities that support a broad range of learners. In this week’s roundup of accessible activities, we invite students to meet an 11-year-old reporter, think about what book they would want to write, visit a TikTok-famous bodega, look closely at an intriguing photograph and write a short story.

1. Read about a young reporter.
In this Lesson of the Day, students learn about Jazlyn Guerra (known to her fans as Jazzy), a self-styled “kid reporter” who has scored interviews with celebrities including Alicia Keys, Tom Holland and Jay-Z. Then students come up with questions for their own dream celebrity interview.
2. Consider: If you were to write a book, what would it be about?
Dillon Helbig, a second grader in Boise, Idaho, created a rich tale about Christmas and time travel. It’s in high demand at a local library and has inspired other young authors. For this Student Opinion question, students think about what they would want to write a book about.
3. Watch a short film about a TikTok-famous bodega.
This 13-minute video in our Film Club profiles Rahim Mohamed, a TikTok star with more than two million followers who manages a bodega in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Watch him come up with wild sandwich combinations for his never-ending stream of customers, and reflect on the local businesses that make your town special.
4. Make observations about a photograph.
What’s Going On in This Picture invites students to look closely at a photograph published in The Times, and try to figure out what is happening in the image. Students can read what other students have noticed in the image, as well as moderator responses, in the comments section.
5. Tell a story.
Use your imagination to write the opening of a short story or poem inspired by the photo in this Picture Prompt — or, tell us about a memory from your own life that this image makes you think of.
