In response, Israel has been pummeling the Gaza Strip with airstrikes that have wiped out entire neighborhoods and brought the medical system to the brink of collapse, and it has also cut off electricity, food, and water supplies. Officials in Gaza said at least 2,808 people had been killed as of Oct. 16.
