Guide to help you choose between WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org - differences, pros and cons.

Many clients have come to us with WordPress.com blogs wanting us to do custom design work for them. While it is possible to do some customization, we are so limited in what we can do with the layouts we have chosen to work only with self-hosted, WordPress.org websites, and blogs. Today we will help you answer which WordPress is better for you by showing the pros and cons of using both WordPress options.


Let’s start from the very basics and answer the significant question:

What is WordPress?

WordPress is a content management system (also called CMS) that will power your site or blog and let you manage everything without the need to learn any coding language. There are other systems available; however, WordPress is currently the most popular one next to Blogger

For your website or blog to be visible on the internet, you need:

  • a hosting,
  • CMS,
  • a domain name (optional). 

I would compare it to building a house. Hosting is your plot (or your piece of the internet in this case), CMS (like WordPress) is your house you will build on the parcel you bought, and the domain is an address to help people find you.

WordPress itself is free! Web hosting is the thing you need to pay for.

Why should you choose WordPress?

WordPress offers you almost unlimited options for growing your site. Because of that, you can use it both for a simple blog or huge shop with the forum and advanced website. Our site is built on WordPress too!

You should remember that ‘with great power comes great responsibility,’ and the more your site can do, the more you need to do to keep it safe and working properly. Because of that WordPress can be a little bit scary for beginners.

How can I know which WordPress it is?

The general rule of a thumb is that if someone is telling you about WordPress, he means the self-hosted WordPress, also known as wordpress.org. Getting a WordPress is easy, and we have covered it in our 4 step guide on how to start a blog.

Pros and Cons of Self-hosted WordPress

Below I will list a few essential pros and cons of having a WordPress.

Pros

  • Complete control over your site
  • You can use any Theme you want
  • All plugins are available
  • Complete control over coding
  • Freedom with Adsense and other ads

Cons

  • There are monthly (or yearly) hosting costs ($2,95 a month with our link)
  • You are responsible for spam control
  • You have to do your own back-ups and upgrades

WordPress.com – what is it?

WordPress.com is just a version of self-hosted WordPress. The main difference is that you do not need to buy hosting for it. WordPress.com is a company that sells you access to WordPress installed on their hostings (it is a huge simplification but explains how it works). It means that you no longer need to worry about your hosting safety or pay for it, but instead, you may need to pay WordPress.com for some additional features.

Getting WordPress.com is free; however, with the free plan, you are very limited with options. To get possibilities similar to self-hosted WordPress you need to pay from $5 to $59. There is even a vip package for $1700 a month!

Pros and Cons of WordPress.com

To help you decide which WordPress is better for you here are a few pros and cons of WordPress.com so you can make your own conclusions.

PROS

  • Free and easy to set up
  • upgrades, spam and security are all taken care of for you
  • back-ups are done automatically
  • Info is hosted on WordPress.com servers, so you are much less likely ever to have your site crash or go down

CONS

  • Tons of generic themes are available, but you cannot use a custom theme like a Designer Blogs theme
  • You need to pay to use plugins
  • Require a premium package to use ads
  • You do not have access to your WordPress files
  • For larger sites, it is more expensive than self-hosted WordPress.

WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

In my mind, I find WordPress.com to be very similar to Blogger. You have a nice, simple, budget-friendly setup. But if you are a serious blogger and want to own your content and have complete control of your design, self-hosted is going to be the route you want to go.

Which WordPress is better?

I will never recommend WordPress.com simple because I think that it will be more expensive for you if you are creating a website or think seriously about blogging. In other words, self-hosted WordPress should be cheaper in the long run.

If you are a beginner and want only to blog and do not care about all those technical stuff the choose Blogger. It is completely free and easy to use. Moreover, it is very beginner friendly.

I would recommend WordPress.com only if you are thinking about starting a WordPress blog and would like to see how it works before buying a hosting. However, with the current prices (only $2,95 per month for hosting plans), it may be better just to buy a hosting and start working on creating a proper site from the very beginning.

Fat Got Your Tongue?

Twenty-two million Americans stop breathing in their sleep without knowing. Snuggling up under their covers and swirling to the beautiful chaos of a new dream, their upper airway muscles stealthily relax, pinching off any aperture to oxygen. As breathing momentarily cuts off and reflexes violently kick in, their bodies unconsciously embark on a workout of raucous snoring, sporadic wake-ups and high blood pressure. For many struggling to get sufficient rest after a full night of what is known as obstructive sleep apnea, or O.S.A., their troubles may be attributed to one key culprit: fat tongues.

When you stick your tongue all the way out while looking in a mirror, can you see your entire uvula? If not, you may suffer from bearing an unusually large tongue, which falls back against the back of your throat as you sleep, effectively closing the airway and suspending respiratory activity for more than ten seconds.

While this increasingly common condition occasionally affects slim folks, overweight people make up around 70 percent of those with sleep apnea, according to a study published by Surendra Kumar Sharma in the journal Chest. With obesity continuing its unrelenting climb among adults today, weight loss is key for treating apnea.

Supporting this idea is a recent study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, where researchers gathered 67 people suffering from obesity and severe sleep apnea. Taking MRI scans of each participant’s pharynx as they lost around 10 percent of their body weight, the analysts observed tongue fat reduction to be the primary link between weight loss and apnea relief.

“No one really understands the relationship of obesity to sleep apnea, and no one knows much about tongue fat in general,” said Dr. Richard Schwab, senior author of the study. “But the correlation between the three is significant.” In his final statistical report, Dr. Schwab disclosed how losing weight reduced tongue fat by an average of 20 percent — a change greater than that of any other airway structure — and consequently, a 31 percent improvement in sleep apnea scores. Essentially, the slimmer the tongue, the more the disorder’s symptoms improved.

Acknowledging the agent and solution to this condition is critical in improving the quality of many lives, as apnea left untreated is a serious matter, according to Jonathan Jun, a sleep medicine specialist at Johns Hopkins. “We’re talking about car accidents in the daytime, lost productivity at work, mood swings, and falling asleep in class,” he said. In a more long-term perspective, sleep apnea also instigates heart disease, stroke and metabolic issues like diabetes.

The scariest part? You might not even know you have this prevalent disorder. With nine in 10 patients still undiagnosed, as reported by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, Dr. Jun encourages everyone to simply avoid trouble by maintaining a healthy weight.

“It’s nothing new, really, to ask people to keep an eye on their weight,” he said. “But now, we know tongue fat is a risk factor for O.S.A., giving us a unique therapeutic target for future testing that we’ve never had before.”

Quorum Sensing: What We Can Learn From Eavesdropping on Bacteria

The sun has long disappeared over the horizon, but a deep glow emits from inside the ocean. The shimmering water takes on an unnerving shade of electric blue. To many mariners over the past centuries, this rare occurrence was proof that the ocean had fantastic creatures hidden in its depths that we had yet to explore and understand. And they weren’t entirely incorrect.

This phenomenon, known as the milky seas, is due to the bioluminescence of the bacteria Vibrio fischeri. In 1970, the scientists Kenneth H. Nealson and John W. Hastings of Harvard University were running tests on these vibrant Vibrio fischeri bacteria when they noticed something rather strange. A lone bacteria, in dilute suspension, would not emit any light. However, when allowed to grow to a certain cell population size, they would all light up, as if someone had flipped the switch on a string of Christmas lights.

It’s as if the simple bacteria are able to coordinate and act in perfect synchronicity with each other! How can this be? Welcome to the world of quorum sensing. Essentially, quorum sensing is the system that bacteria use to communicate with one another and regulate their gene expression based on population density.

To understand why bacteria use quorum sensing, imagine this: A single bacteria invading a host body doesn’t stand a good chance of succeeding because the immune system can easily stop a low-volume attack. So, it’s in that bacteria’s best interest to wait quietly until it knows that there are enough bacteria accompanying it. Then, they can virulently infect the host cell all at once. Sneaky, but effective. How do they do it?

Essentially, like humans, bacteria have their own languages. They communicate using chemical signals known as autoinducers. Autoinducers are secreted by the bacteria, and once the autoinducers are present at a high enough concentration, they can activate the transcription of certain genes, such as luminescence. In fact, according to research done by Stephan Schauder and Bonnie L. Bassler, each bacteria type uses a slightly different autoinducer so that the messages don’t get mixed up. However, they also found that there is a common five-carbon molecule that is produced by every single bacterium. Dr. Bassler dubs it the “bacterial Esperanto” because it is used to communicate among different species of bacterium!

The bacterial Esperanto and common bacterial sensors may be the future of combating viruses, especially as bacteria begin to develop antibiotic immunity. As Andrew Pollack writes in his New York Times article, “Drug Makers Listen in While Bacteria Talk,” researchers are working to design molecules that will clog up bacterial sensors. Like putting on noise-canceling headphones, these molecules would muffle the impact of the signaling molecules, limiting the ability for virulent bacteria to communicate.

Quorum sensing is a fascinating framework that can help explain glowing oceans and nasty colds, as well as having promising implications in fighting infections and antibiotic immunity. The bacteria are talking. All we have to do is listen.

Imagine climbing a skyscraper — but while lugging an elephant. Or with a team of five others, lifting the weight of the Eiffel Tower and three Statues of Liberty. As Sisyphean as this sounds, functional equivalents of these incredible feats have already been accomplished by ant-inspired microrobots. And these examples are only the tip of the anthill.

As the ants keep marching on, dominating as a massive superorganism that has colonized nearly every landmass on Earth, researchers are increasingly turning toward ants as inspiration for biomimicry-based robots. An army of ants boasts the ideal physical anatomy and biological organization for transforming the capabilities of microrobots in the real world — from leading in search-and-rescue missions, to mapping previously unexplored terrain on earth and in space.

At the base level, simple math and physics govern the tremendous strength of the individual ant. From the square-cube law, ants have an optimum ratio between surface area and volume: analogous to the ratio between strength and mass. This allows ants to exert more force per milligram of weight. The physiology of ants are another asset to explore. Researchers at Ohio State University reported on the astonishing power of an ant’s neck joint in the Journal of Biomechanics in 2014. By measuring how much centrifugal force was required to separate the ant’s body from its head (the same force you feel on “rotor rides” at the carnival — minus the decapitation, of course), they discovered that the joint could support 3,400 to 5,000 times the body weight of the ant!

But their biological and social coordination is what really sets ants apart. Not only are ants able to pool their strength into a collective unit, but they also practice decentralized communication through chemical signals called pheromones. This protean system functions similarly to a chain of ripples in water, and it effectively allows for cohesive teamwork even across wide distances.

When a combination of these abilities is applied to swarm robotics, the results are impressive. MicroTug robots created at Stanford University are one example. They made headlines when a team of six — weighing just 3.5 ounces together — pulled a car weighing 3,900 pounds. Synchronizing the bots’ movements so that each used three of their six legs, much like how ants cooperate in real life, made this act possible. Tribots, an invention of Switzerland’s École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and Osaka University, are another instance. Based on trap-jaw ants, division of labor and leadership is a core component of Tribots. So, if one robot fails, the system of “fault tolerance” means that the success of the mission won’t be adversely affected. Both MicroTug and Tribot robots hold immense potential in emergency relief and exploration and navigation missions.

“Just like insects, small robots can be powerful,” says Jamie Paik, lead researcher at EPFL, echoing a growing sentiment among the research world. And given the breadth of ant abilities still untapped by microrobots, it won’t be long before there are more queen robots in the field.

Six Strategies for Effective Distance Learning: A Summary for Teachers

Currently, in 2020, most of us are engaging in some sort of distance learning, and planning to do so in the near future. So, in the most recent podcast, Episode 47, I talked about emergency distance instruction and a few ways that the six strategies could be implemented in distance courses. For today’s blog, I decided to fill these explanations out in written form—producing multiple modes of presentation AND spacing! In this guide to distance learning, I am starting with the blog that I wrote last year summarizing the six strategies for effective learning for teachers. Some of the content is similar or even identical. However, I went through the entire blog and rewrote sections with an eye towards distance instruction.

Introduction

Cognitive psychologists have identified six key strategies that promote learning in many situations, and this research can be implemented to promote long-term durable learning. These six strategies have been heavily investigated for decades, and there is a lot of evidence to suggest their effectiveness in a variety of situations. These situations can include distance learning!

Before digging into the specifics of each strategy, it is important to note that they are very flexible. This is a good thing, in that it means they can be used in a lot of different situations. However, this also means that there really isn’t a specific prescription we can provide that will “always work.” Instead, understanding the strategies and how they work can help instructors and students. Instructors can implement them in their distance learning environments (whether that be synchronous/virtual/remote or asynchronous/distance) in ways that will foster student learning that works best for their course, and students can infuse their study sessions with these strategies in a way that will promote long-term learning. There are also countless ways that the strategies can be combined to be used together. For example, explaining concepts to one another in an online discussion board often uses all 6!

The strategies

Spacing or spreading out learning opportunities over time improves learning. For example, students will learn and retain more if they study 30 minutes M-F, rather than for 2.5 hours all on one day. Students should create a schedule with brief study sessions each day and stick to it. Blocking off time works best because it is easy to procrastinate when an exam or assignment is not immediately due.

Creating a schedule and sticking to it is especially important in distance courses, where students are often required to move through more of the work at their own pace. In these cases, the students need to schedule time to complete their assignments (e.g., watching videos, readings, taking quizzes) AND study and review the content later. The flexibility of allowing students to create their own schedule and work through material at their own pace can be very convenient for students with busy schedules (e.g., those who are working a lot, have children at home, etc.). However, it then becomes easy for those students to put off assignments until right before they are due, when there might not be time to get it all done. This can also lead to cramming (the opposite of spacing). Instructors can help with this by guiding the students to create a schedule and spreading out the assignments and the review sessions. It is also beneficial for instructors to spread out the topics being covered across multiple weeks so that there is a space between the repetition of the same ideas. In lecture videos or virtual video chat lectures, instructors can repeat the most important concepts; the spaced repetition really helps!

Interleaving basically means jumbling up ideas. Students learn more when they can switch between different topics. Doing this helps students learn the similarities and differences between different ideas. In math, for example, students learn more when they solve many different types of problems during practice rather than solving the same type over and over. This typically leads to more mistakes during practice, but in the long-run, the students retain their knowledge much longer. When giving students homework assignments to do, require them to work on material that is both new and old (creating both spacing and interleaving). When engaging in video lecture discussions or online discussion boards, pose prompting questions that require the students to integrate knowledge across topics.

Retrieval practice involves bringing information to mind from memory. This happens when students take practice tests or quizzes, but it can be done in other ways too. For example, students can just write out what they can remember on a blank sheet of paper, or even draw ideas. The key is that they should bring the information to mind from memory. So, copying one’s notes would not be very helpful, but trying to summarize their notes from their memory would be very beneficial. The students do not need to remember everything and can check their notes or course materials after retrieval to fill in gaps.

In distance courses, instructors can utilize frequent low-stakes or no-stakes quizzes through course management systems. Because students will have access to their course materials, it is a good idea to write questions for which the students will not be able to find the answer word-for-word. Some research does show that open-book retrieval opportunities can be effective (1) and that multiple-choice questions can be written to be just as effective at producing learning as short-answer (2, 3). Write questions that require students to apply concepts to specific examples, or identify components within an example. You can also use time limits so that students are less likely to be able to look everything up or talk to one another while the quiz is happening. Finally, I like to write a larger number of questions and have the quiz randomly pull from the larger bank of questions so that not everyone gets the exact same question. This also allows me to let the students take the quiz twice for extra practice (and I keep their best score, or the average of their two scores depending on the course).

Concrete examples are often used by instructors. Concrete information is easier to remember than abstract information, and so concrete examples foster learning. Importantly, research shows that multiple examples of the same idea, especially with different surface details, helps students understand the true idea the example is intending to illustrate. This is because novices tend to remember surface details. Imagine teaching about scarcity and using airline tickets as an example. Students later may remember scarcity was about flying, but not the rest. Using other examples that have nothing to do with tickets (e.g., water during a drought) and making the link between the examples explicit for the students helps them understand the underlying abstract idea. Multiple concrete examples can be used in lecture videos. Instructors can even make short videos explaining additional concepts to be released to the students after the primary lecture (producing additional spacing).

Elaboration involves asking “how” and “why” questions about a specific topic, and then trying to find the answers to those questions. The act of trying to describe and explain how and why things work helps students understand and learn. Students can also explain how the topics relate to their own lives, or take two topics and explain how they are similar and how they are different. This strategy can be assigned alone or for pairs of students. In a distance situation, students can utilize elaboration in online discussion boards or in virtual groups via video chat. Provide the students with prompting questions (especially those that require the students to integrate information across different content, introducing more spacing and interleaving) and ask the students to work through the answers to those questions together.

Dual coding is all about combining verbal representations of information (words) with visual representations of information (pictures/diagrams). When we combine these, it is easier for us to understand the information being presented. Importantly, this is not the same thing as learning styles. While students do have preferences, matching these preferences does not help them learn. Instead, we all learn best when we have multiple representations of the same idea. Importantly, make sure the students have enough time to digest both representations. When students are studying, they should use multiple representations and try to explain to themselves how the different representations show the same idea. Dual coding can be implemented in online video lectures by presenting visual representations on the screen and voicing over the material. Just remember to avoid cognitive overload. Slow down and make sure to explain all aspects, or pause in the video (as awkward as it may feel) and ask the students to try to explain it to themselves out loud with the images on the screen. You can also encourage the students to pause and rewind when they are confused. Try to break the lecture videos up into smaller chunks so that students can work through “bite-sized” pieces.

A note about difficulty

Importantly, all of these strategies have a couple of very important things in common:

  • They are all difficult. The research consistently shows that this difficulty is a good thing; the strategies that feel easy are the ones that do not promote learning in the long-run.

  • They all promote long-term learning. This is important to remember. Often when using the strategies, it feels to students (and instructors) as though they are not promoting learning. This is probably due to the difficulty. However, the research shows us that, in the long-term (even 1-2 days later), these strategies work very well. Conversely, the strategies that feel easy and feel as though we “really know it” promote “learning” that is almost immediately forgotten (even by the next day).

Keep this in mind when implementing the strategies, and highlight these points for the students. This is especially important in distance scenarios where students are taking more control over their own learning! While we make judgments about what we think we are learning in the moment, what we really care about is what we can remember and apply in the future. The strategies should feel difficult, but not so difficult that the students cannot actually do them. This is where flexibility comes in, and adjustments can be made so that the students are challenged and not getting everything perfectly right, but are still somewhat successful.
