Join the Global Classroom: The University of London

The University of London and member institution Goldsmiths have partnered with one of the world’s largest online learning platforms, Coursera, to offer a brand new suite of computer science degrees.

“One of the biggest advantages of online study is how flexible it is – take advantage of that.”

If you’re considering applying and wondering how online learning compares with traditional face-to-face teaching, then look no further – we asked some of our new BSc Computer Science students for their top tips on how to make the most of being part of the global classroom.

Be self-disciplined

“If you’re balancing your studies with work or other commitments, then make sure you set aside time each week to login and complete your assignments.” – Alexeia Wiesner, BSc Computer Science (Web and Mobile Development), South Africa

“The course is demanding and you must plan your week to fit it in. Personally, I have an hour’s commute to and from work each day and I listen to the classes on my phone in the car and then go back and review the materials when I get home.” – Marcello Pires dos Santos Ferreira, BSc Computer Science (Data Science), Brazil

“Read the University’s guidelines on how many hours you should spend studying per semester, per course and try to stick to that. Otherwise you could end up with a work debt and have to catch up.” – Dilpreet Singh, BSc Computer Science (Data Science), Canada

Take advantage of the flexibility

“One of the biggest advantages of online study is how flexible it is – take advantage of that. At the beginning of the programme I was really busy with work and couldn’t start studying immediately but then I could spend a weekend working through a couple of weeks’ study to catch up. Just make sure you’re organised and manage your time.” – Amanda Maria Bizzinotto Ferreira, BSc Computer Science (Web and Mobile Development), Brazil

“This degree is a win-win for me. I haven’t had to quit my job and take time out of my career – I’m working and studying on my own schedule.” – Dilpreet Singh

“With traditional face-to-face teaching you can take notes but sometimes you might miss something. With online learning you can always watch the video again. And I like that I can travel around and still access my studies – it’s good not to be tied to one place.” – Ricardo Diaz, BSc Computer Science (Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence), Peru

The more you put in, the more you get out

“If you’re new to online learning take time to watch some of the videos twice – that way you can layer your understanding and make sure you don’t miss anything.” – Dilpreet Singh

“I work full time and I don’t always have a lot of extra time to study so when I get the chance I like to dive right in and access as much content as I can. With this programme I can complete four or five weeks’ work in a few days, which is great.” – Ricardo Diaz

“Don’t just watch the materials and complete the assignments – partake in the discussions too. Slack is a great resource if you get stuck.” – Alexeia Wiesner

Remember that you’re part of a community

“My classmates all have different backgrounds and different levels of experience and I’m finding that people are really willing to take the time to explain things. No question goes unanswered on the slack channel.” – Amanda Maria Bizzinotto Ferreira

“I always think you learn something better when you teach it to someone else. With the slack channels and the discussion forums there are lots of different ways to interact. And the teachers encourage you to engage with other students, setting team work. It’s a really good culture.”  – Ricardo Diaz

“I think a lot of my classmates have done some foundation study before this degree or are working in the field so they have a lot of knowledge, which is great for shared learning.” – Marcello Pires dos Santos Ferreira

Enjoy it!

“This course is great because they’ve put a lot of effort into making the content interesting and engaging. There’s one module that’s themed around working as a detective and solving puzzles using the skills you’re learning – so you’re having fun while you’re studying.”  – Alexeia Wiesner

“I’ve already completed around 30 courses on Coursera – it’s a really well-structured platform that encourages you to study every week. And the content from University of London and Goldsmiths is fantastic. I’m studying in a totally different way and really enjoying it.” – Marcello Pires dos Santos Ferreira

“The lectures are great. The videos are never too long so it’s easy to stay focussed. I’m looking forward to what’s still to come.” – Amanda Maria Bizzinotto Ferreira

Meet Estella: An Up-and-Coming Journalist Passionate about Social Change

Coursera for Refugees launched in 2016 to provide free access to Coursera’s catalog to refugees around the world. Today more than 26,000 refugees are learning on Coursera, including Estella.

Estella is a 25-year-old aspiring journalist living in Rwanda after she had to leave her home in Burundi. She participates in Coursera for Refugees through the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). In her own words, here’s her story:

I had heard about Coursera from a friend who was talking about learning platforms and opportunities offered by UNHCR-Rwanda. That same day, I enrolled in my first course: Become a Journalist: Report the News! from Michigan State University.

I had always wanted to take journalism courses, but Burundi universities don’t have journalism departments. When I arrived in Rwanda, life was not exactly smooth sailing. I couldn’t afford to attend the school of my dreams, but I wasn’t going to give up.

“I am passionate about social change and journalistic reporting.”

In 2015, I participated in a church writing group for the Africa Haguruka Magazine, where I got my first taste of journalistic writing. Later, I worked as a writer for Diva Magazine, which celebrates women’s achievements and innovations. While this was a great start for my budding career, I realized I couldn’t go further without more knowledge about the field.

“Finding Coursera was an incredible opportunity for me. I saw it as the beginning of a new journey. I have completed four courses and plan to continue learning in order to achieve my dream of becoming a journalist!”

Coursera and UNHCR-Rwanda have made it easy for me to continue my education. The skills I learned on Coursera give me confidence that will open new doors and job opportunities for me. I don’t plan on stopping here: I’ll keep learning in order to become an even better journalist and communicator.

My next courses will be “Transmedia Writing” from Michigan State University and “Transmedia Storytelling: Narrative Worlds, Emerging technologies, and Global Audiences” from UNSW Sydney.

Meet Ehab: A Peace Advocate Building a New Life in Germany

Coursera for Refugees launched in 2016 to provide free access to Coursera’s catalog to refugees around the world. Today more than 26,000 refugees are learning on Coursera, including Ehab.

Ehab is a 26-year-old student resettling in Germany after fleeing Syria. He participates in Coursera for Refugees through Kiron Open Higher Education, a non-profit organization that grants access to higher education for refugees and asylum seekers. In his own words, here’s his story:

“I study and learn because my country needs help. We need to encourage Syrian youth to participate in the peace-building process, to work towards democracy, and to fight for social justice.”

My name is Ehab and I’m originally from Homs, Syria. In 2013, I began working with young people around the world in peace-building efforts through the United Nations.

When I arrived in Germany in 2015, I had practical experience leading youth advocacy, but I lacked the formal academic knowledge that could take my work to the next level.

I started looking for opportunities to enter a German university, but it was harder than I expected due to language barriers, registration requirements, and documentation issues.

I began searching for ways to study political science online, and I discovered Kiron, a non-profit that provides refugees with access to higher education.

“Through Kiron, I learned about the Coursera for Refugees program which opened doors for me. I was amazed by the selection of educational content available online from top universities.”

Through Coursera for Refugees, I’ve taken many courses including:

These courses helped me build important soft skills like organization and project management. This improved the quality of the work I do with the Syrian Youth Assembly (SYA), a platform I helped establish to encourage young Syrians to work together on peace-building and development projects. We were able to partner with Coursera for Refugees to provide access to more than 13,000 refugees around the world, giving them the opportunity to start careers in fields like web development, graphic design, and application programming.

“One day, I dream of becoming a peace ambassador so that I can advocate for peace all over the world. ”

Ehab is currently studying Economics, Politics, and Social Thought with a focus on Peace-building and Youth Participation at Bard College in Berlin. He plans to continue his work with the Syrian Youth Assembly.

Perception in the E-Learning World

0
Perception in the E-Learning World

Hyundai had a problem.  They were about to launch a luxury vehicle in the 40K range, in the United States to attract the customers of BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus (to name a few).  They recognized though that these same customers were unlikely to buy because they would be unlikely to have a Hyundai in their driveway.  Back then, the brand was different.

What then should they do?  They came up with a solution to solve the perception problem.  Remove any mention of the brand Hyundai on the car.  Give it a logo that is eerily similar to a Bentley logo.  Then launch it.

The name of the vehicle? Genesis.

And where at one time, the name Hyundai was mentioned in the ads for Genesis, just recently that is no more.

Perception issue  – solved.

In the e-learning space there continues to be in some sectors, a perception problem. Often self-inflicted by the vendor themselves, it nevertheless continues rampant. From Talent Management systems with learning as a component, to learning systems in general, to new learningtech tools, perception really creates conflict, where it doesn’t have to be that way.

Let’s first take a look at the term e-learning itself. When coined all those decades ago, it was an umbrella term for online learning.  And under that umbrella, was LMSs, LCMS, authoring tools, assessment tools, web conferencing and so forth.

Nowadays?  Vendors use the term as a term itself, calling content within their learning systems as e-learning, to differentiate from classroom training (i.e. ILT).

That is a perception problem, that isn’t totally solved, rather it is a band-aid solution.  Why not reference it similar as WBT compared to ILT?  Or just call it courses, videos (which they do) and so forth, since you will be viewing it uh, online.  Then ILT is face to face or call it classroom training.   Systems will refer webinars as webinars and seminars as seminars, so the whole online learning courses are the only ones where the term itself creates confusion.

Authoring Tools

One sector that implies that it doesn’t have a perception problem are authoring tools, and in some ways it is true.

When a vendor calls themselves an authoring tool, consumers looking for an authoring tool, knows what that means.  Now, they may not know the functionality or capabilities, but they know this tool enables them to create courses.

Brand recognition of course is very strong in the authoring tool space, so much so, that many buyers are only aware of a couple of vendors that have been around a long time.  Yet, I have never heard of a fellow vendor or even a consumer say, “you know, I do not want a traditional authoring tool or we are not a traditional authoring tool.”

There are plenty of authoring tools that try different things, and some have come up with some original ways of trying to appear one way versus another.  Many buyers of Articulate think that Storyline is an online authoring tool, it isn’t.  You can upload a Storyline built course into Articulate’ online tool, but you are not building the course 100% online.  Storyline is still a desktop authoring tool.

Lectora on the other hand, has an online authoring tool, but for whatever reason continues to have it lag behind in features to their desktop tool, and continues to push their VR authoring tool more so, in my opinion, then the authoring tool itself.  Strong proof of this was seen at Learning Solutions, whereas their main authoring tool was not the focus, it was the VR authoring tool.

Many authoring tools have removed the ability to use storyboards as part of their product, but talk to any instructional designer or e-learning developer and a storyboard is a very useful tool.  Simulations is all over the board in authoring tools, with some vendors showing it in a better way to do it, others in an awful way.

Remember when I said authoring tools imply there isn’t a perception problem and that in some ways that is true?  Well, in other ways it isn’t.

However, the perception that an authoring tool will enable you to create an unbelievable course is there.  The reality though is you need to have certain skill sets (which you can learn), to achieve that.

So, vendors in the authoring tool space pitch the perception that creating a course is easy to do.  Fast and thus, by doing this, their product will have a course that your end users will love.

That is false.  Easy sounds great, but I’ve never seen a course built in two hours that will get folks to come back to it.   It just won’t happen.

The perception though is far from different.

Web Conferencing Tools

Ahh, no perception issues here.  Every web conferencing tool will enable you to do a webinar.  Some do a better job than others.   The perception issue though isn’t what a web conferencing tool does or it, it is that many vendors refer to web conferencing as a virtual classroom.

Why not call it, what it is?  A platform to have webinars, which are similar to seminars, but online.   Seems to resolve that perception that a virtual classroom is somehow vastly different than uh, doing a webinar.

In the corporate space, if someone says “seminar” consumers know it means in a physical location.  Now, not everyone knows the term “ILT”, but pretty much everyone knows that term, seminar.

A virtual classroom, reeks of education and especially K-12.  And when you think about that, how good is that memory to you, especially if you received a lot of spitballs to your face during that time?

Assessment tools

A perception issue exists. Again, not from the name itself, well the tool itself, but, the name.  Assessment is a scary term in the eyes of anyone who has every had one.  Some people perceive them as a personality or business assessment, like so many people are required to do at the job.

Mention assessment in a course, and many end users, freak out thinking that somehow this is going to impact their job, if they do poorly.

Training folks know that the term “test” isn’t much better, so some call it a “quiz” as if the term seems so much less of pain.  This is due to the fact that in school, a test would send shivers down your back, a quiz?  Not so much.

Vendors in this space would do so much better if they conjured up a term that shows the positives of what an assessment can do, rather than the implication of negative.  If you call it Skills Improvement or something like that, nobody would perceive the negative connotation of an assessment, and the same applies to you having it with your course.

Digital Learning Platforms

No idea.  No, I mean the perception here is that no one has any idea on what this really means. It is so ambiguous that it could mean you have gone back to the days of online radios with how to play hang-man.  Vendors for some reason, think that calling a learning system, a digital learning platform makes it sound so groovy and modern that folks will flock to it.

Digital Learning isn’t what you think it means, this post explains why.  And here lies the biggest issue in the entire e-learning space, learning systems.

Learning Systems

If there was a way to create a perception problem, congrats to the many vendors in this space, because they themselves have created it.

There is no other sector in the e-learning industry that creates more confusion, more issues and significant perception issues, as the learning system space.

Terms alone add to this confusion and this perception, because what the space calls something doesn’t always mean what folks think it means.

Mobile learning.  Most consumers think it means the vendor has a mobile app.  It doesn’t.  It simply means you can access their system via your mobile web browser.

Mobile-First?  Means nothing.  It just is great marketing copy.  Mobile responsive? Everyone can do that.  Means nothing.

Social – ahh, folks think it means something so different than, what you think it means.  The term social learning was established based on a simple premise – social media tied to learning, equals social learning.

Discussion boards, forums, chat rooms?   Been around since the early 90’s and isn’t really social as much, unless you think chatting in the lunchroom at your workplace is a form of social learning.

Vendors embraced “Facebook” like, and blogs and wikis – to reinforce social.  Yet, social as I often note, still is stagnant.  A stream of people communicating with one another, isn’t social hip, it is been there, seen that.  How many vendors offer an Instagram like experience?  The same number who offer social engagement on steroids? Zero.

Analytics?  You might think it means extensive metrics, but it doesn’t in the learning system space.  It just means a few metrics, often ones, that will not help you with effective analysis to deliver better results with your employees or customers.  Views means nothing, unless you are into SEO and see that as a measure of learning.

Data visualization?  Vendors love to pitch it, but it does not mean a histogram, graph or pie chart that you can do in Excel.

An LRS?  Don’t even get me started.  What it was created for, and what it is being used for, are two different things.

Learning System Types

Oh, the worst.  The absolute worst.  No wonder the entire planet of people are confused.  A huge perception problem.

Instead of making it simple, vendors have found new ways to make it difficult, so much so, it creates confusion even before people start to look.  I won’t blame vendors alone for this issue, plenty of “experts” and others, have only stoked this confusion, leading buyers to perceive one thing, when in reality it is far from different.

I note often, traditional as one such term, which has been driven so often into folks, that they actually think it is synonymous with systems that have been around for a long time and thus means they are antiquated.

When someone says traditional, I know they are thinking of SumTotal, SuccessFactors and Cornerstone.  Yet, on my NexGen grid for 2018, Cornerstone was in the upper right quadrant (the best quad to be in).

And to be fair, each of the platforms are HCMs (Human Capital Management systems), where learning is a key component, and in most cases the one that drives the most revenue.

None of them have a built-in business intelligence tool, yet 99% of the learning system space, even the newbies, do not either.  One vendor who does? Spoke.  And they are not brand new to the space.

Learning Systems Market

One vendor I know was quite accurate when they said that if they were to ask their customers what they were  (i.e. type of system), it would be all over the place.  An LMS. An LXP. A digital this. An employee that.

And yes, that is fair.  But to be quite honest, it happens because the vendor themselves fails to stay true to what they are.

If you are an LXP, say it and stay with it.  If you have features that are over 90% like an LMS, then you are in essence an LMS.  You don’t look at a car and say, well it has 90% of features like a truck, but it is a car.  No, you will say, it has features like a car, but it is a truck.

LMS for whatever reason, has a huge perception problem in the space, and I refer back to the folks who jumped in early on (as if that is a bad thing), built up huge brand awareness, which in some ways surprisingly been a detriment to them.

It is weird to say the least.   Do you know which vendor in the learning system space (online) has been around the longest?

Blackboard.   Yet, I never hear those same terms that are tossed towards the folks such as Cornerstone and SumTotal.

Consumers will tell me frequently that they are confused when it comes to learning systems.   Ask them if they have heard of Sales Enablement Platforms for sales training? Blank stares.   LMS? Yes.  LXP? Mixed, with most unaware.  Learning platform? Ambiguous enough to work.

Training management system?  Sure, but it is more of use for training operations, such as scheduling much more so than for you to conduct online training courses, like an LMS, LCMS, or LXP.

I saw a briefing last week by a well-known vendor who had on their ‘content’ marketplace page, a training management system.  I mentioned it, and I think they were surprised, since I surmise many people are unaware – i.e .consumers, if they show that to prospects.

The learning system space also has a problem attracting folks who what a system specifically for customer training.  I know some vendors call it customer education, but it is customer training.  Customer education sounds dated, and refers back to well, education.  Yuck.

But, talk to folks who walk the trade show, and so many will say they can’t find a system that focuses on customer training or B2B/B2C.  Why?  Because the vendor themselves and their salespeople push employee training and learning as the primary.  Their literature, messaging, marketing all say employee.  And while it is true, that there are employee only systems, that message often gets lost in marketing speak.

If I provide only customer training for my system, say it.  If I do B2B, say it.  If I offer B2B/B2C and employee training or learning, then that is what I offer and say it.  Don’t call it workforce learning platform, because it implies you only offer employee training.

When a vendor calls themselves a mentoring or coaching platform, many buyers know what that means or at least have an inkling.

But even there, those vendors seem to thrive on terms that make zero sense.

Bottom Line

If your learning system can do quite a bit, why not call it a learning ecosystem?  It says that it can do this now, but you can build on as you grow and expand.

That vendor I saw last week, has decided to slide their LXP under the header of their name and the term “cloud”.   Why?  I’d follow the Hyundai route and give it something new, and exciting.

I know vendors who have “learning” as part of their company name.  It screams to me custom development shop.

Drop the learning part.

Want to change the perception of your brand?  Replace the name with something that attracts attention and exudes whatever you are trying to say.

It isn’t that difficult.

In fact, as authoring tools like to point it,

It’s easy.

5 key take-aways from the 2019 Election

0
5 key take-aways from the 2019 Election

To the surprise of the nation, it was the Coalition that won over the majority of voters back in May, and is now in for a second term.

Predictions had completely missed the
mark in predicting a Labor win. For a campaign that waged a war on the
high-earners and tax dodgers, as well as fighting to better protect the
environment and jobs, it didn’t deliver a knockout punch for voters.

A Liberal win was seen as a win for wealthy Australians, and seemed to signal business as usual for the party on most policy fronts, including the environment. The environment was meant to be an election-swaying agenda – either continue down a path of inaction or face up to the facts. In the end we voted to continue to do very little, if anything at all.

So with our pollies set to return to Parliament in July, let’s take a look at what the Coalition’s second term means for you.

1. Home owners

With the uncertainty of the election
having passed, and yet another rate-cut (the lowest in history), things are predicted to settle in the months after the election.
Though overall it’s the slowest it’s been in 12 years, people continue to turn up in the major cities on auction day.

If you’re a first home buyer, the First Home Loan Deposit Scheme will help you purchase a home without a 20% deposit. The scheme will provide access to loans from financial institutions, without the need for lenders mortgage insurance. The scheme can be used in conjunction with state-based First Home Owners grants, if borrowers and the property meet eligibility requirements.

What’s interesting to note is that even
Scott Morrison considered overhauling the negative gearing
policy
before switching and
attacking Labors policies during the 2019 federal election campaign.

The new policies could serve to benefit
the property market and hopefully Australia’s housing landscape. Or it could
continue to fuel the demise without taking more drastic action.

2. The music industry

The Coalition government has pledged plenty to help live music flourish, despite restrictive policies at state levels like in NSW.

$22.5 million will help small
businesses host more artists and cover the cost of equipment and performances.
While Women in Music will facilitate mentorship programs, assisting women to
make inroads in their careers. This is a great vote of confidence for the music
industry in Australia, which is often underserved.

3. The Environment

The environment will be a major loser
as a result of the election. This sticking point was supposed to secure the
election for Labor, since the coalition has what some are saying, “no effective climate and energy
policy”.

Many believed that voters would finally cotton on to the climate emergency, however this
was not the case. We simply thought the cost of the environment was too high
for our hip-pockets, ignoring the ultimate price we’ll all pay in the future. This is a loss for all Australians
unfortunately.

4. High income earners

Those who are in the high-tax bracket
dodged a bullet with their taxable incomes remaining safe under the Liberal’s
tax rate freeze.

Lower-income earners will receive a tax
offset, while 94 per cent of taxpayers will continue to pay 30 cents in the
dollar in income tax. Some taxpayers can expect a break of
just over $1000 come tax time in June.

Labor planned to collect more income tax to fund much needed services for all Australians, living up to the “advanced Australia fair” creed.

5. SMBs

Small-to-medium business and family-run organisations will face lower taxes, boosting productivity, and helping level the competitive playing field at the same time. The corporate tax rate for small-to-medium businesses will drop to 25% by 2022, and the asset write-off will also be lifted to a value of $30,000 and apply to businesses earning up to $50 Million. This should help improve cash flow in businesses and stimulate reinvestment which will be a boon for the bottom line of smaller operations around the country.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the second term, and whether or not Scott Morrison will emerge still as the leader, or be usurped. Knowing what the policies mean for you, and how they’ll impact you in different ways, can be complicated and convoluted but it’s important to keep updated in changing times.

Aditi’s New Passion: Making the Internet More Healthy and Safe

Aditi is a student at the Georgia Institute of Technology completing the M.S. Cyber Security program. She is also interning at Microsoft as a software engineer. Aditi is taking courses on Coursera to supplement her university learning and to further explore subjects of interest.

When Aditi was 11 years old, she was diagnosed with a degenerative eye disorder, Retinitis Pigmentosa, that left her completely blind by the age of 15. In her own words, she shares how she’s used learning to explore passions and overcome obstacles:

Technology transforms the way people do things, and I’m acquainted with this truth in every aspect of my life. After I lost my sight, I equipped myself with various assistive technologies which changed the way I accessed the world.

I use screen reading software like JAWS, NVDA and ORCA to access computers and Talkback to use my Android phone. Fascinated by the powers of technology, I decided to make it my career. I completed a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Information Technology from the University of Mumbai and started working for a data center security company in India.

If tech was my fascination, cybersecurity became my passion. My college had taught me programming, but to become a cybersecurity expert, one needs expertise in multiple domains of IT.

I was introduced to Vision-Aid, a Boston-based NGO that provides career training. I enrolled for their Python programming online course to learn a new language and connect with fellow visually impaired techies. Vision-Aid uses content from the University of Michigan course “Python for Everybody” — that’s how I found a whole new world of learning on Coursera.

I continued to explore content on Coursera including:

Learning on Coursera not only helped me professionally, but also helped me make the transition back to being a student.

At Georgia Tech, most of our assignments are in Python. After learning Python from Dr. Chuck, one of the finest teachers on Coursera, they were easy to tackle.

In my current software engineering internship with the Microsoft Security Response Center team in Redmond, I am applying concepts that I learned in IBM’s Data Science course. I joined that course out of curiosity, but today I feel so glad to have completed it.

The content and access are open to the public according to the “Open Access” and ” Open Access ” Atlantic International University initiative. Participants who wish to receive credit and / or term certificate , must register as students.

Lesson 1: Quality

Quality assurance (QA) refers to the engineering activities implemented in a quality system so that requirements for a product or service will be fulfilled. It is the systematic measurement, comparison with a standard, monitoring of processes and an associated feedback loop that confers error prevention.

This can be contrasted with quality control, which is focused on process outputs. Two principles included in QA are: “Fit for purpose”, the product should be suitable for the intended purpose; and “Right first time”, mistakes should be eliminated. QA includes management of the quality of raw materials, assemblies, products and components, services related to production, and management, production and inspection processes.

Video Conference
Lecture Materials

Lesson 2: Quality Administration

A quality management system (QMS) can be expressed as the organizational structure, procedures, processes and resources needed to implement quality management. Early systems emphasized predictable outcomes of an industrial product production line, using simple statistics and random sampling. By the 20th century, labor inputs were typically the most costly inputs in most industrialized societies, so focus shifted to team cooperation and dynamics, especially the early signaling of problems via a continuous improvement cycle. In the 21st century, QMS has tended to converge with sustainability and transparency initiatives, as both investor and customer satisfaction and perceived quality is increasingly tied to these factors. Of all QMS regimes, the ISO 9000 family of standards is probably the most widely implemented worldwide – the ISO 19011 audit regime applies to both, and deals with quality and sustainability and their integration.

Lesson 3: Quality Management

Quality management system (QMS) can be expressed as the organizational structure, procedures, processes and resources needed to implement quality management.

Lesson 4: Process Monitoring and Measurement

Process management is the ensemble of activities of planning and monitoring the performance of a process. The term usually refers to the management of business processes and manufacturing processes. Business process management (BPM) and business process reengineering are interrelated, but not identical. Process management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, techniques and systems to define, visualize, measure, control, report and improve processes with the goal to meet customer requirements profitably. It can be differentiated from program management in that program management is concerned with managing a group of inter-dependent projects. But from another viewpoint, process management includes program management. In project management, process management is the use of a repeatable process to improve the outcome of the project. ISO 9001 promotes the process approach to managing an organization.

Lesson 5: Strategies and Procedures Quality of Service

A customer may or may not also be a consumer, but the two notions are distinct, even though the terms are commonly confused. A customer purchases goods; a consumer uses them. An ultimate customer may be a consumer as well, but just as equally may have purchased items for someone else to consume. An intermediate customer is not a consumer at all. The situation is somewhat complicated in that ultimate customers of so-called industrial goods and services (who are entities such as government bodies, manufacturers, and educational and medical institutions) either themselves use up the goods and services that they buy, or incorporate them into other finished products, and so are technically consumers, too. However, they are rarely called that, but are rather called industrial customers or business-to-business customers. Similarly, customers who buy services rather than goods are rarely called consumers

Lesson 6: Total quality management

Total quality management (TQM) is the organization-wide effort to install and make permanent a climate in which it continuously improves its ability to deliver high-quality products and services to customers. While there is no widely agreed-upon approach, TQM efforts typically draw heavily on the previously-developed tools and techniques of quality control. As a business phenomenon, TQM enjoyed widespread attention during the late 1980s and early 1990s before being overshadowed by ISO 9000, Lean manufacturing, and Six Sigma

Lesson 7: Iso 9000

The ISO 9000 family of standards is related to quality management systems and designed to help organizations ensure that they meet the needs of customers and other stakeholders while meeting statutory and regulatory requirements related to the product. The standards are published by ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, and available through National standards bodies. ISO 9000 deals with the fundamentals of quality management systems, including the eight management principles on which the family of standards is based. ISO 9001 deals with the requirements that organizations wishing to meet the standard have to fulfill

Lesson 8: Lean manufacturing

Lean manufacturing, lean enterprise, or lean production, often simply, “Lean”, is a production practice that considers the expenditure of resources for any goal other than the creation of value for the end customer to be wasteful, and thus a target for elimination. Working from the perspective of the customer who consumes a product or service, “value” is defined as any action or process that a customer would be willing to pay for. Essentially, lean is centered on preserving value with less work. Lean manufacturing is a management philosophy derived mostly from the Toyota Production System (TPS) (hence the term Toyotism is also prevalent) and identified as “Lean” only in the 1990s. TPS is renowned for its focus on reduction of the original Toyota seven wastes to improve overall customer value, but there are varying perspectives on how this is best achieved. The steady growth of Toyota, from a small company to the world’s largest automaker, has focused attention on how it has achieved this success.

Lesson 9: Six Sigma

Six Sigma is a set of strategies, techniques, and tools for process improvement. It was developed by Motorola in 1986. Six Sigma became famous when Jack Welch made it central to his successful business strategy at General Electric in 1995. Today, it is used in many industrial sectors. Six Sigma seeks to improve the quality of process outputs by identifying and removing the causes of defects (errors) and minimizing variability in manufacturing and business processes.[5] It uses a set of quality management methods, including statistical methods, and creates a special infrastructure of people within the organization (“Champions”, “Black Belts”, “Green Belts”, “Yellow Belts”, etc.) who are experts in the methods. Each Six Sigma project carried out within an organization follows a defined sequence of steps and has quantified value targets, for example: reduce process cycle time, reduce pollution, reduce costs, increase customer satisfaction, and increase profits

Lesson 10: Zero Defects

(or ZD) was a management-led program to eliminate defects in industrial production that enjoyed brief popularity in American industry in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Quality expert Philip Crosby later incorporated it into his “Absolutes of Quality Management” and it enjoyed a renaissance in the American automobile industry—as a performance goal more than as a program—in the 1990s. Although applicable to any type of enterprise, it has been primarily adopted within supply chains wherever large volumes of components are being purchased (common items such as nuts and bolts are good examples).

Funciones a Desarrollar:
