There was a time when paper business cards and printed resumes were the only way to network — but nowadays job-seekers have a whole slew of online tools to get discovered and hired. In addition to making profiles on sites like LinkedIn and Dribbble, having your own website is a smart way to showcase your personal brand and share your resume and experience with potential employers.

What you display on your resume website depends on your specialty and expertise within tech, explains Francesca Galbo, Codecademy Talent Director. For example, someone in the design field, like a UI/UX designer or a web designer, would want to have a stylistic website that’s easy to navigate and demonstrates their technical skills, she says. A data scientist, on the other hand, might want to include links to data visualizations and projects that they’ve created.

You should think of your resume website as a case study for recruiters or hiring managers who want to see a sample of your work, Francesca says. There are things you can communicate through your website that may not come across on a standard resume or CV. Here are the relevant details and helpful features that Francesca recommends including on a personal resume website.  

Projects you’ve built

If you’re applying to any type of technical position — from software developer to data analyst — you’ll need a professional portfolio that has examples of projects you’ve worked on.

How you organize your portfolio is up to you: Some folks might have a dedicated page for each project with details about what technology they used or their role in the project, while others prefer a list with links and a brief sentence about their contributions. “Having some sort of visual portfolio to connect to the work that you’ve done is exceedingly helpful,” Francesca says.

Still building out a portfolio that you can use to apply for jobs? With portfolio projects, you’ll also get a list of tasks and a Kanban board to keep you on track, plus lots of external resources and information you might need to complete it.

Including a link to your GitHub profile is an easy way for technical recruiters to see the open-source projects that you’ve contributed to, Francesca says. Your GitHub profile shows how comfortable you are writing and reading code, plus gives a glimpse into how you collaborate with other developers. Make sure your GitHub profile is updated and visible to potential employers.

The programming languages you know

Your resume website is a great place to list all the programming languages you’ve learned. Not sure how to organize all the skills in your arsenal? These guides explain what to put on a full-stack developer resume and how to list the most relevant developer skills.

A writing sample

Sometimes recruiters will ask candidates to share a writing sample as part of a job application. If writing isn’t your strongest suit, don’t stress — Francesca says writing samples are just meant to give people a sense of your communication style.

Examples of writing samples for job applications can be things like a bio, personal statement, blog post, article, or even research paper from a class or job, Francesca says. Just make sure to proofread your writing sample for any grammar or spelling errors before you post it on your website.

It might seem redundant to add a link to your LinkedIn on your resume website, but Francesca says it’s a must-have on any resume whether it’s on paper or digital.

Recruiters often operate within the LinkedIn platform when they’re gathering candidates for a position, Francesca says. “It’s so much easier when we can actually pull up a LinkedIn profile and save that person to a project or archive them,” she says. (FYI, this is also why a job application might require that you provide a link to your LinkedIn profile.)

To that end, if you want to make sure recruiters are seeing your professional website, it’s a good idea to add the link to your website somewhere on your LinkedIn profile — fish where the fish are, so to speak.

Make sure people who visit your website have a way to get in touch with you. Add a contact form or list your email address directly on the site, with some sort of instruction about ways you can work together.

Your resume website should contain enough information and evidence of your past accomplishments to tell your story and make yourself stand out as a candidate. To recap, you’ll want to include: past projects you’ve completed, links to open-source contributions, a list of the programming languages and frameworks you know, plus a writing sample and your contact information — including a link to your LinkedIn.

How To Talk About A Company’s Mission During A Job Interview

A key step when you’re preparing for a job interview is doing some internet sleuthing to learn about the company that could soon employ you. That includes Googling the people you’ll be meeting with, getting acquainted with the company’s product portfolio, and checking the brand’s social media channels for recent news.

In your research, don’t forget to read up on the company mission — because it will likely come up in your interview, explains Francesca Galbo, Codecademy Talent Director.

A “mission” is a concise description that explains why a company exists outside of making money. You can look up a mission statement on a company’s website, and sometimes it’s included right in a job listing.

Here are the mission statements for a handful of tech companies you’re probably familiar with:

  • Meta: “Give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together.”
  • Netflix: “At Netflix, we want to entertain the world.”
  • Google: “Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”
  • Codecademy: “Codecademy’s mission is to empower inspiring careers in technology.”

So why do job-seekers need to be aware of a company’s mission before they even get hired? One of the first questions a recruiter or hiring manager will ask you during a job interview is: “Why do you want to work at this company?” That’s your chance to demonstrate how the company’s mission resonates with you personally, Francesca says.

The way you answer that question completely depends on the company and your own personal connection to it. You don’t have to prepare a monologue about the company, or make up a story for the sake of the interview, Francesca says. But think about a way you can tie in the mission to your work experience, life, or other interests.

For example, Francesca recalls applying for a position at an app that teaches kids to read. In the interview, she weaved in the fact that she was an English major and has loved literature since she was a young child.

“I brought that anecdote into that interview process and said, ‘This is something that is very, very important to me,’” Francesca recalls. “Not only was I able to anecdotally pull and connect with the mission, but I was able to prove that I know what the company does and why it’s so important.”

Candidates who understand and connect to the organization’s purpose and mission are typically the ones who stand out the most to recruiters, Francesca says. With so many people searching for new jobs these days, recruiters can quickly sniff out people who are just flinging their resume at any company that’s hiring, versus the ones who genuinely want to work there.

“We don’t want to hire people that want any job — we want people that want this job,” Francesca says. If you don’t feel passionately about a company’s mission, then maybe it’s a sign that you shouldn’t apply for the position, she says.

While talking about a company’s mission might seem like performative corporate gobbledygook, it’s a good exercise for anyone in the market for a new job to think about the types of places where they want to work. Research has shown that when employees feel that their purpose aligns with their organization’s, they’re happier, healthier, and tend to stay at an organization longer.

Ask yourself: What values are important to you? How do you want your work to contribute to society or impact the world? For example, you might be most interested in companies that are developing technology to mitigate the effects of climate change. Perhaps there’s a role at an organization that’s uplifting marginalized communities. Or maybe you want to work for a company that’s at the forefront of entertainment and pop culture.

The survey revealed that students’ self-reported level of competence in science skills increased steadily through the study, with competence significantly higher at the midpoint survey than baseline and significantly higher at post survey than midpoint. A similar pattern emerged for students’ engagement with science outside of the program, however the only significant difference was from post survey to baseline. Finally, based on the analysis of the structured interview, Habig and Gupta were able to classify the students’ level of interest development (4). Given that the requirements for the program were that students have an interest in science, it is unsurprising that none of the students were categorized as having triggered situational interest by the end of the program. Two students were categorized as having maintained situational interest . These students expressed interest in participating in science program again if given the opportunity, but were less confident about their ability to do science activities on their own. The majority of the students, 15, were categorized as having emerging individual interest. These students demonstrated mastery over the content, engagement with science outside of the program, and a strong desire to continue to engage with science in the future. For example, one student reported “…before doing these research projects, I wouldn’t really so much look into science articles… it never really crosses my mind. But, doing these research projects and searching up articles, you know, I realized that there’s such fascinating research out there that I would like to learn more about and especially now. Sometimes my parents and I will discuss biology and like I’ll search up articles and I’ll show it to them.” Finally, 2 students were categorized as having well-developed individual interest . These students scored highly in every dimension of interest – frequency of engagement, depth of understanding, voluntary engagement, and propensity for independent reengagement. For example, one student responded “I write for a teen science journal … I recently wrote an article about climate change and lobsters.” (4)

This research provides a really useful tool for understanding how interest, particularly interest in STEM, can be supported. I think there were several key aspects of this program that helped to make it successful. First, it focused on authentic science research, which the authors defined as “experiences in which students engage as practitioners of science, that is, where they develop research questions and use specific tools and practices of science in real-world contexts to collect and analyze data, and to communicate their findings.” (4). Second, this was supported by training in skills and background knowledge through workshops. Finally, the program took place from July through December, allowing for both the development of foundational background knowledge as well as spacing of material.

Angelica Ross

Angelica Ross is an actress, singer, and self-taught programmer who, as a transgender woman, faced discrimination and tokenization throughout her career before finding solace and opportunity in tech. She created the organization TransTech to help other transgender and gender-nonconforming people build new skills and launch careers in the tech field.

“So many times LGBTQ+ and marginalized people aren’t afforded the opportunities to dream and be creative because life is always at our heels,” Angelica said in an interview with People. “But technology is the one thing that can give you your creativity back.”

Why you should follow: Angelica uplifts LGBTQ+ people by sharing TransTech success stories and using her platform to address issues facing the community on Twitter. (And as a multi-hyphenate singer and performer, she often posts news about her music and concerts, too.)

If you’re a fan of nifty gadgets, Bug (aka Queerbots on TikTok) shares adorable 3D-printed objects and cool engineering projects, like this vibrating robot and 3D-printed octopus. The 26-year-old genderqueer robotics engineer also gives us a peek into life as a nonbinary person working in tech.

Arlan Hamilton

Arlan Hamilton went from experiencing homelessness to spearheading a multimillion-dollar venture capitalist fund. After learning that minority-led startups struggle to receive funding, she was inspired to make a change and created Backstage Capital — a fund that invests in women-, POC-, and LGBTQ+-owned startups.

“Eight percent of funding goes to women and people of color, which has gotten much better over the past few years, but it definitely has a long way to go,” Arlan told Rocketship.fm.

Cool Job: I'm A Data Scientist At Shopify

When Siphu Langeni describes her journey from working in healthcare to working in commerce as a data scientist, she tells people: “I went from saving lives to saving livelihoods.”

Siphu is a data scientist at Shopify, the platform that merchants and entrepreneurs use to start, grow, market, and manage in-person and online businesses. Before switching to tech, she worked in a clinical setting as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.

A major life event, plus “a healthy combination of confidence and a little bit of crazy,” prompted Siphu to start over and enroll in a data science certificate program. She dove into her data science coursework and watched video tutorials about coding in her spare time. “I felt like I couldn’t get enough,” she recalls.

Siphu landed an internship with Shopify in the summer of 2021, which gave her hands-on industry experience, and ultimately led to a full-time job as a data scientist in Shopify’s commerce algorithms and product understanding department.

Starting over in a new industry was tough initially, but it was a much-needed change, Siphu explains. “Everybody is job-seeking — and that’s cool,” she says. “But when you’re looking for a career, you need a thing that’s going to keep you coming back every day. I felt like the problem spaces within data science were so impactful.”

What got me interested in the job

“I wanted to do something different, but I didn’t know what that was necessarily. Working in healthcare, especially in very high acuity areas, there’s a tendency to run into burnout, so I knew it was a very real risk. I was at a point in my career where I felt really good; it’s comfortable to be in a place where people see you as kind of an expert at what you do.

I was getting a lot of exposure to decision-makers and policy-makers, and I found that I always seemed to provide the most compelling story or argument when I was able to back it up with data. I was incorporating a lot of data, but I wasn’t calling it ‘data’ at that point.

I decided to go back to school full time and study for an advanced diploma in data science. The stars aligned where the opportunity presented itself, and I was mentally ready to be in a position of starting over — because it’s tough.”

How I got in the door

“Imagine moving from one completely different space to another. There’s a lot of ambiguity, a lot of questions, a lot of blanks that need to be filled in.

After leaving school, I needed something that would allow me to be more industry-ready and employable. One of the ways I was able to do that was through a mentorship program called SharpestMinds. I was crawling going into that, and when I came out of it, I was running.

I was paired with a mentor working in the industry, and we were able to produce an end-to-end data science project. The project was related to the NLP (Natural Language Processing) space, so using language to predict certain things. I needed annotated data, so in the process, I actually created and authored my first Python package. That project let me learn a lot of technical skills and build confidence.

I started at Shopify as an intern, which ended up being a really great experience for me. It gave me hands-on experience to better understand the role of data science and what it even is. Fortunately, my team thought I was pretty good, so they kept me and I stayed on board. I’m actually on the same team that I interned on.”

What I actually do every day

“If you ask 10 data scientists what they do, they’ll all give you 10 different answers. One of the reasons why Shopify was one of my top choices is because I did want to be practicing data science and be very close to the coding side of things.

I love trying to figure out a problem, then translating that to code, pushing it to production, and actually seeing it do something cool. I feel really great when I’m working on coding.

The team that I’m on specifically is called ‘leverage,’ which focuses on giving our merchants the ability to leverage the scale that Shopify has and that network effect that they could never otherwise have on their own. That involves working very closely with product, engineering, and UX, building products that help make it easier for merchants to do that.

One example of something we’ve worked on is a product classification model. This is a really cool machine-learning model that inputs text and image features, and is able to categorize products appropriately. In order for businesses to have good SEO, to be discoverable, and to have proper taxation, their products have to be categorized correctly. This is one of those things that we provide to make it easier for merchants to be able to get their business going.”

Here’s what you need to get started

Like lots of data scientists, Siphu primarily uses Python as her main programming language. Working with software engineers, Siphu realized that she writes “production-grade code” that’s not reusable without solid documentation. “Good documentation has saved me on many occasions,” she says.

Shopify is all about empowering entrepreneurs and using data to level the playing field. With billions of products sold on its platform, Shopify works with a ton of data — “petabytes worth,” according to Siphu. So she uses SQL to access and manipulate the large volume of data. A strong understanding of SQL is very valuable as a data scientist, because you’re often using advanced queries to access data. “Data isn’t useful just by nature of it being there,” she says. “You have to be able to turn it into something that you can pull insights out of.”

Data science is a rapidly growing field, with roles like Data Scientist and Machine Learning Engineer ranking high on top job lists from LinkedIn and Glassdoor.

And the industry is only getting bigger, according to Codecademy Data Science Domain Manager Michelle McSweeney. “We’re seeing data transform our society and everything we do, whether it’s measuring how well something performed or deciding what we’re going to do next,” she says.

Data science involves leveraging data to find actionable and business-advancing insights. If you’re interested in analyzing data to figure out why things happen and find big-picture solutions to problems in our world, or you want to work with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, a career in data science could be right for you.

Ahead, we’ll explore seven popular roles in data science and their responsibilities, plus help you get started on your journey to landing a job in the field.

What is data science?

Data science sits at the intersection of probability, statistics, math, and software engineering. It allows us to make sense of and utilize the huge amounts of data we create every day, and it’s used in virtually every industry.

In finance, for example, data science helps banks identify risks and fraudulent behavior. In healthcare, data science underlies wearable tech devices (like Fitbits and insulin pumps) that monitor your health and help physicians assess and treat health conditions. And you’re probably already familiar with data science’s use in entertainment: Every time you get a suggestion from Netflix or Spotify, that’s data science at work.

The jobs you can get in data science

Here’s a look at the different types of roles and specialties within data science, and the programming languages and skills you need to pursue them.

Data Scientist

Data Scientists help organizations make the most of their data. Their daily tasks range from analyzing data to find insights and forecast future trends, to building machine learning models, algorithms, and applications. They also may use data to discover potential improvements and optimizations for their company’s systems and processes.

A Data Scientist’s scope and specific responsibilities depend on what the company does, how the data team works together, and the questions or problems they’re trying to solve, Michelle says.

Broadly speaking, “Data Scientist” is an umbrella term used to encompass four specializations: Analytics Specialists, Inference Specialists, Machine Learning Specialists, and Natural Language Processing (NLP) Specialists.

Analytics Specialist: Also known as Data Analysts, Analytics Specialists collect and analyze data to find patterns, trends, and insights that help guide decision-making. Their primary tool is SQL, which is used to manage relational databases, and they also need top-tier communication and data visualization skills to present their findings. “If you want to make beautiful dashboards or communicate data with a story, data analytics is the place to be,” Michelle says.

Analytics Specialists are the most in-demand and versatile of the Data Scientists as practically every organization creates and manages large volumes of data.

Inference Specialist: Inference Specialists help businesses understand what their data is telling them to do, Michelle says. They’re responsible for finding the why — figuring out how specific variables influence and drive business outcomes and results.

These Data Scientists mainly work with R, a programming language designed for statistical analysis, and may run hypothesis, statistical, and A/B tests. “If you’re wowed by statistics, inference is the place to be,” Michelle says. Good to know: There’s a huge demand for Inference Specialists in banking and financial institutions.

Machine Learning Specialist: Machine Learning Specialists build machine learning models and algorithms, and they may also be tasked with feature engineering, tuning hyperparameters (which guide the machine learning process), and identifying users who might be at risk of churn.

These Data Scientists use Python for predictive analytics and cluster analysis, and they need a solid understanding of data structures and algorithms.

“Machine Learning Specialists are at the forefront of what we’re able to do with data,” Michelle says. ”Machine learning, plus the computing power we have today, is pushing our capabilities beyond what we would have thought possible.”

NLP Specialist: NLP Specialists serve more of a niche role, working primarily with text and AI to teach computers how to understand and interact with humans. They typically work with programming languages like Python and Java, and their responsibilities might include cleaning and formatting unstructured data and building chatbots. “If you want to learn about language and apply text to machine learning without getting too deep into the math behind it, NLP is the place to begin,” Michelle says.

Machine Learning Engineer

Distinct from (yet similar to) Machine Learning Specialists, Machine Learning Engineers build machine learning systems and applications like facial and speech recognition software. They apply machine learning to streaming data at both input and output, and they primarily rely on Python and its machine learning libraries like pandas and scikit-learn. They also often work with big data, and they’re in high demand with organizations that sell consumer goods that require recommender systems (like TV streaming or e-commerce websites).

The main difference between Machine Learning Specialists and Machine Learning Engineers is that Machine Learning Specialists use machine learning to better understand their data, and Machine Learning Engineers turn machine learning models into products that end users can engage with.

Take Netflix as an example. The preview images used for different shows are based on a cohort analysis, which are performed by Machine Learning Specialists. The recommendation engine that suggests things you might like is created by Machine Learning Engineers.

Business Intelligence Analyst

Business Intelligence (B.I.) Analysts are more focused on practical outcomes than other data science roles, and their primary duties include answering business questions and delivering business-advancing insights to stakeholders. To do so, they need a deep understanding of their industries and departments. Michelle describes the role as “part domain knowledge and part technical knowledge.”

B.I. Analysts typically don’t need as much programming experience as other data science roles. They still use SQL, but their insights are shared with B.I. tools like Microsoft Excel (which you can learn how to use in our Analyze Data with Microsoft Excel course) and Tableau.

According to Michelle, this is the fastest route to a career in data science. “You don’t have to go deep into statistics or machine learning, you just need to understand the basics of how data and databases work and those two B.I. tools,” she says. “With that, you can start making a huge contribution to an organization because it allows you to ask and answer questions with data.”

How to know what kind of data scientist a company is looking for

Most Data Scientist job postings don’t distinguish between specializations. So it’s important to read the job description carefully.

Michelle recommends making a list of companies you want to work for and reading through their Data Scientist roles to get a sense of what they’re looking for. Here are some clues and keywords to look for:

  • If the listing mentions data visualization and SQL, they’re looking for an Analytics Specialist.
  • If a job description includes predictive analytics, machine learning, and processing large amounts of data, they’re looking for Machine Learning Specialists.
  • If a posting talks about A/B and hypothesis tests, they’re looking for Inference Specialists.

Keep in mind that the line between Data Analysts and Data Scientists is very blurry, Michelle notes. The titles are often used interchangeably in job postings, so unless you’re pursuing NLP or machine learning roles, look for Data Analyst jobs as well.

Forget Buying Multiple Systems – Go One with All

There is a wonderful ad out there from Expedia, where Ewan McGregor talks about how much we love stuff. And he is 100% right. I love stuff. Tech stuff. I buy way too much of it, most of it sitting somewhere at my home, in closets or storage. Show me some Los Angeles Rams stuff, and if the interest is there, zing – I own it. So much so, that I turned my office into a Rams Shrine, and another room in the house too. There is so much, that again, I have some waiting in a closet to be added to the collection. Autographs? Check. Rare collectables? Check. Rams pins? Check. Season Ticket stuff I get? Check. Pennants? Check – even one from the 50’s. Signed Jerseys? Check. Football Cards, with some players who were awful? Check. And the list goes on. Way too much stuff.

I surmise that you have a collection or collections of stuff. A percentage is viewable, and the rest? Closet or garage or storage. It is who we are, I think as humans – although my dogs have a lot of stuff too, and we continue to buy them stuff, because, they need more stuff. If you have a pet, I bet they have lots of stuff.

When you go to a trade show, I bet you get a lot of stuff. Most hits the garbage can before you even leave the hotel – again, all about what ever you are checking out at the show. Then add in that stuff they shove in those bags you receive, it is a lot of stuff.

I blame this whole thing around stuff, due to college and grad school. How many of you, purchased textbooks that you never opened, but were afraid to sell back, because the professor may one day, mention it? I had a grad school professor once recommend I read an article in a textbook, to provide futher enlightenment on something I was doing. He asked me, if I still had the textbook. I did. I used it for a door holder.

In the learning system space, there is equally a lot of stuff, some of which you either have purchase, plan to purchase or are considering purchasing. Authoring tools. Learning Tools. Digital mentoring or coaching solutions. Web conferencing offerings. Assessment tools and the list again, goes on. You might even have stuff you are not using. Manuals anyone? Who can recall the manuals we provided employees or members thinking they love this stuff? (Hint, they didn’t, and most used it as a backstop for their chair)

We provide our employees with a lot of stuff – called content. We ignore the fact that a large percentage of that content will never be opened, because it is a lot of stuff. How many out there, have a swath of courses/content on your learning system? How many of those courses and content are sitting there – on a virtual shelf, with virtual dust added.

It’s all stuff.

I bring up the stuff argument because your company, organization, school, entity or association may unknowingly have a lot of stuff – when it comes to the number of learning systems you own.

Learning Systems are like Streamers everyone has more than one

If you have two or more learning systems which one of these categories do you slide under?

  • Department – Every department/division at your company has their own learning system
  • One for me, one for you – One learning system for your employees, and a completely different one for your customers/partners
  • We Share – unless it is you – Departments may share one system, other departments share a different system
  • Government – We are a state or a county or a province and every different department/office has their own learning system. We gripe how much it costs, but hey, did we mention everyone has their own system?
  • Association – We have chapters – congrats – everyone has their own learning system

Connections

For the two or more, have you experienced any of these issues?

  • HRIS can’t connect to one of the systems, it connects with others
  • You want the systems to talk to each other – vendors claim they can do it – they can’t. Then you are in a quagmire with zero options, except Slack, Teams or e-mail sharing. Awesome.
  • You need to connect to a variety of other systems (non learning) but at the company – and everything has to be connected with the other learning systems all tied to the same solutions, invariably, not all can do it, data gets missed, or lost in transition and then the blame game happens
  • You can L&D or Training, put the system in charge of some other department, who knows nothing about learning or training, so they pick a system similar to tossing darts, and that system is not like the other systems already in the company. The key here – the system they have is antiquated, and employees gripe privately, will other employees love the system the other entity has.
  • SharePoint is our Friend – You tap into SharePoint, but have other learning systems. The reason being? It’s SharePoint, we always had it, and we know how to use it. This premise goes over like someone still trying to use a Diner’s Club credit card at a fancy restaurant in 2022. Fail.

Role the Tape

The details are in the pudding, as they say – they say that right? Who remembers the episode where Frank Burns says he loves the raisins in the pudding, to which Jamie Farr’s character says, “What raisins”?

  • A company I once worked for, had 46 different learning systems. Each department got to select their own, the contracts always favored the vendor, pricing was nuts, and none of these departments had any real sense of what was really going on.
  • Vendors love to tout Big Name companies when they make your pitch to you. Based on my experience, I have found that the majority have more than one learning system in there, and you will know this if you ask the vendor – sadly, the vendor won’t tell you, unless you do.
  • Vendors who are in Google, love to mention they have Google. See above for what is really going on.

Can this be resolved?

Absolutely. You can have your cake and your ice cream too. Because I’m going to let you in on an option, that will resolve everything you saw above in the “use cases”.

Multi-Tenant -The Answer you have never considered

The old school, legacy term is “extended enterprise”, but this term is often used when referring to customer education or partner training. Not so much with the above use cases (sans the customer education angle).

A multi-tenant follows this approach (I won’t get into the tech stack or other technology angle here, rather I am going to focus on the capabilities/features and tap back into the use cases).

It’s usually is a copy of the instance of the learning system (i.e.) same features, capabilities, etc. The difference? Each sub-tenant can have their own look, logo, branding, theme.

  • Some vendors refer to multi-tenant as portals and sub-portals, or business hierarchy with separate tenants. I always prefer saying Parent and Child, where there is one parent, but each sub-tenant is a child. You can have as many children as you want (i.e. sub-tenants).
  • As the parent (the main tenant), you can assign rules to each sub-tenant, which means you decide what they can and cannot do in their own tenant.

If you want X number of tenants to be able to upload their own users, but others cannot – you can set that rule. If you want the sub-tenants to be able to add their own content, 3rd party or created themselves, etc. – you can. You can even do the user angle, but with content, so X can upload/add and others cannot.

If you have an employee or member or student and want them to be not just in one tenant, but in another tenant you can. Again, you set the rule.

If you want to have X or all sub-tenants be able to see their own data and what data specifically, you set the rule (as the main tenant, i.e. parent). A sub-tenant can only see themselves, they cannot see any other sub-tenant (think child). You as the parent, can see everything, all the sub-tenants, all the data, etc.

If you want to allow each sub-tenant or specific sub-tenants the ability to have SSO, or people can go right to the sub-tenant and register/login – you set the rules to do so (again, as the parent).

If you want to have e-commerce is one tenant, and not the other – you can do this. Some systems it is a simple click – turn off for that sub-tenant. Other systems will do this for you, as part of your setup.

Want to change the labels, tabs, etc – for each sub-tenant or a group of them? If the system allows you to do this as a parent – i.e. as the main system (some vendors do not offer the ability to change labels), you can do this for each sub-tenant.

The connections issue? Goodbye. Because the system, the one learning system is connected to those connections you need, and the data streams are all pulled (for each sub-tenant) into your HRIS, ERP, CRM, birthday contact list, as a push-pull. The multiple purchase system angle and issue is gone.

Multi-tenants are the top option for customer education, because you may have clients who want their “own look and feel” and not your look, so you can have them as a sub-tenant. The rules, etc. still exists, and they can see only themselves and no one else. Ditto on data. Ditto on the ability to upload their own users and content if you so choose.

Custom domains? Again, a vendor with multi-tenant usually can do this – always check with the vendor, but the ones I am huge fans of, can.

Common Questions

When folks are considering going with a learning system that offers multi-tenant, I find these to be the most common.

Q: Does it cost extra for sub-tenants aka sub-portals aka as children?

A: Totally depends on the vendor, but there are many that there is NO COST for any of the sub-tenants aka children. You can have as many as you want. There are other vendors who will give say five for free, or the first child for free, then charge either as a bundle for the next set or per. I know of a vendor who gives 20 children for free, then charges thereafter.

Q: If we wanted to brand each child, with a different logo/skin, is there an additional fee?

A: For the majority the answer is no. However, there are vendors who charge a flat yearly fee for white-labeling when you go multi-tenant. Personally, I am against the “charge extra for white-label”.

Q: What about security and privacy, any difference or impact?

A: No. The same level of security and privacy you receive from the learning system itself, covers the children too.

Q: Does it take longer to implement when you go multi-tenant?

A: If you require the vendor to do customization beyond the usual skinning/branding and basics, then perhaps – plus it costs for that. But for the vast majority, there is no difference compared to the time it takes if you went with the learning system, without choosing to use the children (sub-tenants).

Q: I have content already, and we plan to purchase 3rd party to provide to our learners. Can we push this down into the sub-tenants/children if we want to?

A: Yes. The time to do so doesn’t take that long to do. And it is simple(for the majority of systems).

Q: Can we integrate our LXP with a multi-tenant learning system?

A: Yes. You can integrate an LXP, an SIS, HRIS, HCM, Payroll, SaaS Authoring tool, etc. to use with the multi-tenant.

Q: Does every learning system offer multi-tenant (with sub-tenant/portals/children)?

A: The majority do, however, not everyone does a great job at it. I find that many vendors do not understand the term multi-tenant from a learning/training experience, and instead think you are referring to multiple servers or tech stacks. Thus, saying parent-child or portal-sub-portal, may have to be used, if they can’t figure out the term. And yes, there are LXPs that are multi-tenant.

Q: Do you have any favorites, where you as doing an excellent job?

A: Yes. Absorb, D2L, Thought Industries, Eurekos, Schoox, Bridge, Cornerstone LMS. Gyrus Aim, Learn Amp, Fuse, OnPoint Learning and Performance System, Pluralsight, Docebo, LearnUpon, Biz Library, Access LMS, Knowledge Anywhere, The Brainer LMS, Skill Jar, Intellium, Valamis, SAP Litmos, Top Class, enabley, Meridian KSI, SmarterU, Learning Cart and Talent LMS.

You will notice that systems that are customer-education primary are on this list. They do accept employees (i.e. non customers) as clients, they are just heavily tilted on the CE side of clients. Still, I would recommend them. As for ZERO fees for additional tenants(children) and skinning – my favorites are Bridge, Eurkeos, D2L and Schoox.

Pricing

Okay, you are eyeing the multi-tenant and are wondering to yourself is this going to cost more compared to the multiple systems I have. Assuming you are not using Moodle or another open source system OR you landed a deal where every user is 25 cents, then one system with a multi-tenant should be lower. I say should, because you can still pick the wrong vendor OR you need mass configuration, which is never free. In my experience though, one system with lots of children is still less expensive than multiple systems.

As for administrators, the need of having one for each system, can go bye-bye. If you have five systems, with five administrators, and you move to one system that does multi-tenant, you could easily drop two administrators at the minimum. Number of users will always drive the admin numbers and what is entailed.

Bottom Line

We love stuff.

We love it so much, that we purchase multiple systems, under the guise that you have to have one for this unit or this division or employees only versus customers or multiple institutions (under one main institution).

But what we are failing to realize is that this stuff, isn’t necessary, when one system with multi-tenant (aka multiple instances, sub-tenants, children, portals), can handle it all.

The decision is in your court.

As a LGBTQ+ job-seeker, the thing that’s often top of mind (besides, I hope I get the job) is assessing how safe you are bringing your identity and lived experience into the application and interview process.

While lots of tech companies are making strides to show up for LGBTQ+ employees, the job search can present extra challenges, hurdles, and nuanced situations for members of the LGBTQ+ community, according to Josh Torres, an executive leadership and career coach in Oakland who works with historically marginalized communities in tech.

From a legal perspective, LGBTQ+ individuals are protected from employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or transgender status. But it can still take a lot of mental energy to try and answer the interview questions while representing yourself the best that you can, explains Chris Rollins, a career coach in Tampa who specializes in LGBTQ+ leadership.

Here are some tips from career coaches who work with the LGBTQ+ community for navigating the job-search process and landing a job at a company that celebrates you.

Look at the company’s public presence

Take a look at how the company or organization outwardly supports the LGBTQ+ community. For example, “it’s a major red flag if a company does nothing for Pride or is not talking about LGBTQ+ issues in their workforce in some way,” Josh says.

Find out more about who’s in charge, like the company’s CEO and senior leadership team. “Do your research to find out as much as you can about who that person is at the top,” Chris says. “The way that they make decisions, share information, and work with their team all trickles down directly to their leaders.”

Some other broader questions to consider: Is corporate social responsibility baked into the company’s mission and work? Does the company sponsor events that support the LGBTQ+ community? And is advocacy consistent throughout the organization, or is it still lacking?

Ask questions about benefits

The type of benefits that a company offers often reflect how a company prioritizes inclusion, Chris says. For example, do company-sponsored health insurance plans cover gender-affirming care options and medical necessities for people who are trans? Is the parental leave policy equitable and extensive for parents and caregivers of all genders? And does the company cover adoption fees? What about IVF and other reproductive assistance?

All of these topics are fair game to ask a recruiter or hiring manager in a job interview (BTW, you should definitely ask questions in a job interview).

Beyond benefits, if you’re returning to an office environment, find out more about how amenable the workplace is to LGBTQ+ people. Ask if there are gender-neutral restroom options available, Josh says. “Or is there a place where you can feel safe as an employee going if you don’t necessarily identify as male or female,” he says. Though these things may seem insignificant to some, they can have a major impact on your daily work life.

Talk to current employees

Throughout the interview process, you typically get to speak to a panel of people who work in various roles at the company, which is a great way to get background information about employees’ experiences, Josh says.

If there isn’t someone on your interview panel who represents the lifestyle or aspect that you’re trying to find more information on, you can always ask to speak to someone on the company’s employee resource group (ERG) for LGBTQ+ people, Josh says. Think of this as a “gut-check” to get a sense of how LGBTQ+ folks really feel working at the company, he says.

Not sure who the right person is to talk to? “Do a search on LinkedIn for an LGBTQ+ or Pride ERG and see if any employees at the company have that mentioned in their profile,” Chris says.

Chris suggests asking each of the people you’re interviewing with about the company values to see how they embody them. “You can do your own assessment there to see to what extent they take [equity] seriously, and is it actually part of the culture,” he says.

Share as much as you’re comfortable

Ultimately, it’s up to you what you share with an interviewer or even a future employer down the line, Josh says. For some folks, there may be aspects of their gender identity and expression that are visible in a job interview or in the workplace, while others prefer to wait until they’ve developed a foundation of trust to open up or come out to coworkers.

“In an interview where you are creating a narrative around yourself, is [your LGBTQ+ identity] pertinent to your story?” Josh says. “Is it something that is going to bring a different lens to the work that you’re doing and add value?” More often than not, your diverse lived experience and identity are assets that will only enhance the work that you do at an organization. “If you are comfortable stepping into that identity, there’s a lot of power in it as well,” he says.

Any time you create a new post, you should find natural ways to include links to related posts within your site.

It’s also important to remember to edit old posts to include links to any new content you create that might be related.

Be sure when using internal links that you only include links that are related to the topic and that truly add value for your visitors. Taking advantage of internal linking will significantly increase your page views and will drive visitors deeper into your site.

5. Speed up your site

There is nothing more annoying to a visitor than a slow-loading site. Having a website that takes longer than a few seconds to load will absolutely destroy your bounce rate because visitors will immediately hit the back button. You’ll also be penalized by Google by having a slow-loading site, so do everything you can to get your site speed up.

6. Create easy navigation

Another key way to keep visitors on your site longer is to have a simple, well-organized navigation menu. This makes navigating around your site and finding information easy for your visitors and will keep them around longer.

Many websites have complicated menus with too many links and drop-downs which can be confusing for visitors. Keep your main menu simple and focused on the key pages you want your visitors to visit. Drop-down menus are helpful in offering more options under the main menu option, but try to limit the number of links in the drop-down portion to no more than ten, if possible. You can also effectively add navigation menus to your blog sidebar, but again, it’s important to keep them simple.
