This Sunday the 12th of May is International
Nurses Day – a day where the world pauses to reflect on the incredible
contribution nurses have on our lives.
The event is dated to coincide with Florence Nightingale’s birth – the woman known to many as the mother of modern nursing. Florence set an incredible standard of care as a manager and trainer of nurses in the Crimean War.
While Florence lived in the 19th Century, the principles of care she once coined still fill the rooms of hospitals today – making nursing the most trusted profession across the globe.
An industry that continues to grow
Unlike many industries that ebb and flow due to factors
such as technology, nursing is one field that continues to grow.
In fact, 60,000 new nursing jobs are predicted in
the next 5 years alone. It’s no wonder Department of Education data has
highlighted undergraduate nursing as the most popular external area of study.
Just ask Brenda Bruce, a nurse who completed her
Master of Industry Management with Curtin University, through Open Universities
Australia.
A nurse on a mission
Brenda is a Clinical Nurse Consultant for Safety and
Quality at Alice Springs Hospital, and a proud graduate.
Determined to move her established nursing career
into management, Brenda completed a Graduate Certificate, before taking on a
Masters – all the while relocating across the country for her husband’s career
countless times, getting engaged and married, and having children.
For Brenda, balancing study with her existing career
and family life was key. The flexibility that Open Universities Australia gave
her allowed her to find that balance – focusing on twelve weeks of study at a
time and taking breaks for the important milestones in life when needed.
After nine years, Brenda made her dreams a reality
and graduated. Today, she is living proof of the passion nurses have for their
field.
