Recognising Bold Innovators across EMEA’s academic community

More than 1.6 billion students were disrupted due to abrupt campus closures at the peak of the pandemic. Things are slowly getting back to normal, but disruption was a wake-up call for higher education institutions worldwide to find new and innovative ways to deliver learning to their students. The pandemic has forever changed the way students learn and educators teach. We’re humbled by how more than 4,000 higher education institutions around the world embraced Coursera for Campus to accelerate their digital transformation journey, offer blended learning, and integrate job-relevant content into their curricula. 

Today, we’re proud to recognise Bold Innovators across EMEA who played a critical role in driving academic innovation and creating job-ready students amid a rapidly changing skills landscape. Their hard work and passion turned the crisis into an opportunity and laid the foundation for a more inclusive experience for the learner community. These innovative educators were recognised during the region’s first Coursera for Campus forum meeting.

Bold Innovators were recognised under five categories:

Digital Content Creation 

Institutions driving accelerated engagement and enrolment with online learning content.

Africa Nazarene University (ANU) – Kenya was recognised under this category for guiding students to online learning by creating more than 10 Guided Projects and courses in partnership with Coursera. The effort resulted in over 1,000 enrolments in a short period of time.

Faculty Adoption of Online Learning

Universities driving the adoption of online learning via their faculty and academic staff. 

We’re pleased to recognise the University of Salzburg – Austria and the leadership of Professor Wolfgang Pree. Professor Pree teaches several Computer Science courses at the University of Salzburg. He quickly designed online courses and motivated learners by giving ECTS credits for completion. More than 90% of students enroled in all the prescribed courses and 67% completed four or more courses. 

Skills Transformation

Institutions driving the highest number of learner completions 

With more than 10,000 unique learners and over 6,000 course completions, University 20.35 from Russia has been leading the way in preparing students with the skills required to launch their careers in high-demand fields. 

Curricula Transformation

Institutions with the most innovative and impactful use of Coursera to supplement their curriculum.

We’re thrilled to recognise the Morocco Consortium, a group of universities across Morocco dedicated to up-levelling skills. Professor Hayar, University President at University Hassan 2 de Casablanca, led this effort. Under her leadership, 14 Moroccan universities collaborated to offer Coursera as part of their curriculum to improve student employability. 

University Transformation

The most diverse and innovative use of Coursera by a university. 

We’re excited to recognise Covenant University – Nigeria for its effort to create Africa’s first blended curriculum with a skills-first approach to learning. They redesigned the academic experience to include industry-relevant learning and entrepreneurship. Covenant partnered with Coursera to deliver a wide range of skill-based learning to more than 9,000 students. In the first year, more than 85% of students completed a course from the catalogue.
