What Is the Coolest Thing You Have Seen in Nature?

Do you enjoy spending time outdoors? Are you fascinated by the natural world?

Have you ever seen something in nature that made you say “wow”? Perhaps a stunning sunset, a weird creature, an amazing rock formation or an extreme weather event?

In “Chasing the Yosemite National Park ‘Firefall,’” Johnny Diaz, a Times reporter, writes about a natural wonder that happens only once a year:

Students, read the entire article and then tell us:

  • What is the coolest or most memorable thing you have seen in nature? Where did you see it? What effect did it have on you?

  • Where have you seen especially interesting or beautiful natural wonders? In your travels? In your own backyard? At zoos or aquariums?

  • Crowds often gather to view Yosemite’s “firefall.” Do you prefer to spend time alone outdoors or share the experience with others? Why?

  • What other marvels, like the “firefall,” would you like to see someday?

  • Why are people so fascinated by the natural world? What about it excites or delights you, if anything?
