Connecting the Dots: Dr. Barbara Oakley on the Science of How We Learn

The science behind how we teach others and how we learn ourselves is nothing short of a fascination for many of us. As much of the world moved to online work and study out of necessity and safety, that fascination has only grown deeper. 

While it’s tempting to call online learning a necessary but secondary replacement for face-to-face learning, Dr. Barbara Oakley disagrees, and she has the science to prove it. Oakley focuses on the fundamentals of how people learn, combining neuroscience and social behavioral analysis to pinpoint the exact learning processes that lead to stronger outcomes. She believes that when online learning is done well, it not only matches the outcomes that are possible in a classroom but has the potential to surpass it. Oakley thinks that the way educators should teach when online is no longer just an option; it’s the only option.

Oakley is a professor of engineering at Oakland University and the creator of “Learning How to Learn: Powerful mental tools to help you master tough subjects”, one of the most popular courses on Coursera. Recently, we hosted a webinar with Dr. Oakley to learn more about her research on the science of how we learn. We sat down with Oakley to learn a bit more about her path, and ask how teachers (and students) can apply these neuroscientific insights to learn better.

Tell us about your teaching journey. How and why did you get into the field?

Teaching is the last thing that I would have ever thought I’d get into. I’m a shy person, and I remember looking at my professors and wondering how they could speak in front of people so calmly. While I was finishing my Ph.D., I applied for a teaching job, not thinking I would get it. Then, I got it—and there I was, teaching a class that had been one of my worst when I was a student.

Those first few teaching years were tough. My initial approach to teaching was to get the information as clearly and efficiently as I could. I found that when I was very clear in my teaching, I could run away more quickly after class—which inspired me to explain even more clearly. 

I would also make bad jokes to break the ice. To my surprise, the students seemed to enjoy them—and they then forgave me many an error in my teaching!

All teachers start somewhere; not everything comes naturally. There are many solutions  available to teach yourself how to be a better teacher. An upcoming specialization we’re developing will explore these techniques. 

Why did you decide to pursue a career that uncovers the connections between the brain and how we learn? 

I initially started working in the area of learning because of one of my engineering students. He’d found out I had flunked my way through elementary, middle, and high school math and science and had received my first Bachelor of Arts degree in Slavic Languages and Literature—he wanted to know how I changed my brain. I thought my students’ question was a good one—so good that it inspired me to begin researching the neuroscience and cognitive psychology behind how we learn.

I remember back when I was first trying to learn calculus, saying that I won’t turn the page until I understood that page. I spent three hours poring over those words. Then I accidentally turned the page—and there was the answer! I thought, “Can’t someone teach me how to learn better?” Little did I know that I would become a person to write the kind of books on learning that I wish I’d had.

Plus, part of my turning to this new path was just the lucky confluence of being able to work with Terry Sejnowski [who’s researched neural networks and computational biology]. Together, we’ve wanted to explain why different teaching approaches work or don’t work and look at the science behind it. I want to combine the research from cognitive psychology and neuroscientific findings on learning and explain them in a way that’s easy to understand.

There have been some great revelations about learning from neuroscience. For example, direct instruction—a mixture of lecture and student-led active learning—is the most effective way to teach (rather than all lectures or all student work). How can teachers combine these approaches effectively?

When you’re learning something, you connect neurons together, and they become better connected as you practice more. The brain learns through the declarative system and the procedural system, with each system making neural connections—but neural connections that work slightly differently in your long-term memory.

The declarative system takes information from your working memory through the hippocampus into your long-term memory. The procedural system, on the other hand, puts information into your long-term memory via the basal ganglia. Declarative type learning is faster to do, but later on, it’s slower to use (think of cramming for an exam). Procedural learning, on the other hand, takes more time to learn, but once you’ve got it, it’s very fast to use (like speaking your native language, or a foreign language you’ve learned very, very well—you don’t even need to think about it). You may have a hard time explaining something you’ve learned procedurally, like how to solve a Rubik’s Cube. But once you know something procedurally, it can become as easy as tying your shoe (tying your shoe, after all, is learned procedurally!). The declarative system might be able to recall the complicated steps of a proof with difficulty, while the procedural system can allow you to speak your native language without even thinking about it. 

A teacher can best teach using the declarative system through explanations, such as a lecture. The procedural system is taught with student-led active learning, such as through homework or active class exercises. A good instructor knows how to naturally combine these two learning systems in the classroom. I think teachers feel guilty about explaining material in a lecture, but they shouldn’t. It’s a crucial way to share information. Lectures are as important as active exercises.

In an online setting, having main room lectures and then breakout rooms for smaller, active-learning assignments is one of the best ways to combine both procedural and declarative forms of learning. You can engagingly present your materials and then have students take part in active-learning exercises. This approach can work even better online than in person, thanks to advancements in teaching and video conferencing tools.

What about the concept of “working memory capacity”? How can a teacher best assess a student’s working memory capacity and help them succeed?

Everyone is born with a certain working memory capacity, and there’s little change that can be made to this. I like to think of “working memory” as an octopus with four arms because people have, on average, four arms in their working memory. Your working memory can reach in and gather sets of neural links, holding them as you’re manipulating information to solve a problem. You can also think of your working memory as holding balls of information—that is, sets of neural links. Working memories vary in size. Some people may be able to juggle five balls of information at a time (in other words, they have a high working memory capacity); others may only be able to juggle three balls. The trick is to be able to accommodate both sizes of capacities in your classroom.

But it’s important to remember that higher capacity working memory is not necessarily better than lower capacity working memory. A person with a smaller memory capacity may need to consume smaller chunks of information at a time, but they can still move that information into long-term memory. They just need more practice. Once they’ve got the neural links of learning in place and in long-term memory, they can recall this memory just as well or even better than the student with a higher-capacity working memory. 

Your research also dives deeply into why taking or giving little breaks during the learning process is actually a very big deal. How can teachers administer breaks effectively, especially with remote learning?

Your hippocampus needs small breaks to be able to unload the information in the long-term memory through the declarative system. Short breaks in classroom teaching allow students to retain the information better. Even just breaking up a lesson for a few seconds with a small joke can be enough time for the brain to reset and let more information make its way into long-term memory. 

You can break up your learning with active learning sessions, where students practice with the material.  Practice is sometimes denigrated as “drill and kill,” but we should perhaps instead call practice “drill and chill” because this procedural, habitual type of learning through practice ultimately means you don’t even have to think about what you’ve learned. Practice-based learning is also handy because once you’ve learned something procedurally, you can focus your declarative learning on the new and more complex aspects of the material.

What is one area that you would like more educators to focus on to enhance their teaching effectiveness?

I would like to see teachers inserting bits of insight about how to learn effectively into their instruction. A little effort to improve students’ abilities to learn has a significant impact. When I was at a high school in Qatar, for example, I discovered the teachers had worked with an AP biology class, taking three days at the beginning of the course to teach students how to learn effectively. Teachers interwove ideas related to learning through their entire course. It paid off in spades.

Why do you think online learning platforms like Coursera are a useful resource for teachers? 

It’s terribly time-consuming to create all your own course material, but it’s fantastic when you  have someone that has really taken the time to construct the materials. Then you can put the material into your own class and devote your resources to helping the students learn it. There is a big payoff to having quality online materials and pulling from the work of others who have done the hard work to create those online materials. 

We, teachers, do this “pulling from others” all the time with books, so it shouldn’t be different with other multimedia materials. With online learning platforms, you have economies of scale in online learning that teachers just don’t have, such as creating video content. We want students to become engaged with the materials, and there’s evidence that content such as well-made videos can lead to higher engagement. Using well-made videos is also one of the easiest ways for students to learn materials.

What advice do you have for faculty who are just starting to teach online? 

If you’re a teacher going online for the first time, you should be stealing ideas from other great teachers. I would first watch some online teaching from platforms like Coursera because you’ll get ideas on how to improve your abilities in doing this virtually. In doing this, when you see strong material, you should note and use this material in your own teaching! 

Finally, I would say to go and make a video of yourself first, just for you, before you have to get in front of a whole online class. You can’t do everything live; practice makes (almost) perfect, after all! I didn’t start out as a strong teacher—it took practice, and that same mindset can be applied to online learning. You’ll get there!

The Unbounded University: Identifying Curricula Gaps for Blended Learning

In the wake of the pandemic, blended learning models that integrate face-to-face and online instruction have been widely adopted. Universities around the world can supplement on-campus programs with online capabilities to:

  • Engage students with content and certifications from top universities and companies—online, offline, and on mobile
  • Build their own credit-eligible courses in core curriculum or for honors credit with academic integrity tools and custom online assessments 
  • Provide hands-on learning for students using real-world tools to learn practical skills
  • Increase student capacity without increasing infrastructure costs

In Part II of our recent report, The Unbounded University: Unlocking Opportunities through Online Learning, we explore when and how academic departments can use digital content to meet students’ evolving needs. The analysis of our platform data reveals that university students across regions are gravitating towards online courses in domains critical to the future of work

As the demand for cutting-edge technical skills grows, our data shows that students are turning to online education to develop related skills, including artificial neural networks and blockchain. Courses that develop specific skills in computer programming and data analysis, are more likely to be missing from a university’s curriculum and have higher rates of engagement from learners on our platform. Our course catalog analysis shows that data analysis skills only appear in 9% of course catalogs, but that engineering students on Coursera enroll in courses teaching data analysis more often than other skills.

To prepare students for a competitive job market after graduation, universities are leveraging online professional certificates. According to our campus learner survey, more than half of Coursera learners reported that the certificate they earned on the Coursera platform improved their application for a job or internship. Blended learning models allow universities to offer students access to online certifications from industry leaders, such as Google and IBM. Our data reveals that in 2020, the top professional certificates on Coursera globally were: 

  1. Google IT Support
  2. Google IT Automation with Python
  3. Cloud Architecture with Google Cloud
  4. Cloud Engineering with Google Cloud
  5. DeepLearning.AI TensorFlow Developer
  6. SRE and DevOps Engineer with Google Cloud
  7. Google Cloud Security
  8. Google Cloud Networking
  9. IBM Cybersecurity Analyst
  10. IBM Applied AI

Guided Projects also develop students’ job-relevant skills and free up time for faculty to focus on broader projects. Over 2.5 million students have enrolled in Guided Projects on Coursera, which provide students with hands-on learning to develop practical skills. Students use cloud-based desktops in a web browser while industry leaders guide them step-by-step through a project. 

The top Guided Projects for engineering majors on Coursera’s platform are Create Your First Python Program, Build Your Portfolio Website with HTML and CSS and COVID19 Data Analysis Using Python. The top Guided projects for business majors on Coursera’s platform include Getting Started with Power BI Desktop, Google Ads for Beginners, and Introduction to Project Management.

Life After COVID-19: Get Ready for our Post-Pandemic Future from the Institute for the Future: Q&A with Jane McGonigal

Jane McGonigal, Ph.D., instructs Life After COVID-19: Get Ready for our Post-Pandemic Future, which stacks into the Futures Thinking Specialization from the Institute for the Future. The new course examines how futures thinking can help address societal issues exacerbated by COVID-19 to create a better post-pandemic world. In addition to her role as a research director at the Institute for the Future, Jane is a game designer, author, and speaker.

Can you share a little bit about your background? How did you become interested in futures thinking, and what led you to want to teach on the topic?

I started training at the Institute for the Future fifteen years ago, and I’ve been a research director there for more than a decade. 

Before I started my futures thinking training, I was actively working as a game developer. This isn’t a common career path—game designer to professional futurist—but I wanted to create change in the game industry. My goal was to help video games become a more positive force for good in society and bring resilience-building games to education, healthcare, work, and global development. 

At the Institute for the Future, I discovered that one of the most powerful ways to create change is to research what the world could be like ten years in the future. When you give people a vivid alternative to immerse themselves in, it can inspire them to try new things. It’s often said that the best way to predict the future is to invent it. I believe the best reason to become a futures thinker is that you want to create lasting positive change—in your life, at your company, in your industry, or in your community.

What was the motivation for creating this course and why is it so relevant to this moment in time, when we’re continuing to wrestle with a global pandemic? 

Over the past year, so many of us have felt locked up in one way or another. We’ve been living smaller lives. We’ve stayed inside. We’ve stayed apart. We’ve had to protect ourselves, literally and metaphorically.

Hopefully, things are beginning to change. COVID-19 vaccines are becoming more available. Numbers are going down in many places around the world. It’s not over, but many are starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. There’s a desire to open the door to our post-pandemic lives and find out what’s on the other side. 

This is where futures thinking can play an important role. Because it’s not just about finding out what’s waiting for us out there in our new post-COVID lives. We can help make that new world. This moment of transition, from pandemic life to post-pandemic life, can be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to change our lives and society for the better. It’s also the best chance we have to get ahead of future risks. We’ve seen what happens when society ignores a global risk and fails to prepare or act quickly enough. No one wants to be blindsided again — whether it’s by another pandemic, the climate crisis, or some other “unthinkable” event.

This is an opportunity to prepare our minds for life after COVID-19 and start planning for the next three-to-five years. Events are only “unthinkable” when we don’t think about them ahead of time. That’s why the Institute for the Future created this new course. 

Is the course designed for a particular audience? And, what should learners know prior to enrolling?  

This course is for everyone! I invite you to enroll, especially, if you want to:

  • Increase your personal resilience and plan for your future.
  • Prepare to lead your company or organization through post-pandemic recovery and re-invention.
  • Serve a larger community or social mission, so you can make life after COVID-19 a future that’s better for all. 
  • Turn your own COVID-19 experiences and challenges into something positive.

There’s no previous experience or training required to enroll. Just bring an open mind and a willingness to stretch your imagination!

The new course addresses some of the “underlying diseases” exposed by the pandemic. What are those underlying issues and why is the post-pandemic recovery period a suitable time to discuss them? 

This course is designed to help learners better understand the shock we’ve all just lived through. At the Institute for the Future, we say that you have to look back to look forward. So we’ll begin by looking back at seven pre-existing conditions of society we’ve identified that made the pandemic more severe and harder to recover from, including economic inequality, broken health systems, the climate crisis, political division, brittle supply chains, racial injustice, and fragile public trust. 

Then, we’ll look forward to some of the most innovative and exciting solutions that are being proposed to help our organizations and communities heal and move forward from these pre-existing conditions. In the next three-to-five, we believe there will be more opportunity for transformative change and global collaboration than perhaps at any other moment in human history. 

This is a chance to do something big, to use this moment of unprecedented disruption to rethink and reinvent our lives and our society for the better. That’s why the final project for this course invites learners to identify small actions they can take right now to contribute to post-pandemic recovery and help shape our future.

What advice would you give a learner trying to prepare themselves, their community, or their organization for the first few years after the pandemic? 

I would advise learners to try and adopt a mindset of urgent optimism. It’s the biggest benefit I think futures thinking training has to offer. Urgent optimism is a balanced feeling. It’s recognizing that yes, there are great challenges and risks ahead, while also staying realistically hopeful that you personally have something to contribute to how we solve those challenges and face those risks. Urgent optimism means you’re not just staying awake all night worrying about what might happen. You’re leaping out of bed in the morning ready to do something about it. Urgent optimism is knowing that you have agency and ability. You can use your unique talents and skills and life experiences to help create the world you want to live in. 

As we begin the journey from our current pandemic reality to our new post-pandemic lives, we all need as much urgent optimism as we can get!

How to Use Font Glyphs – Make Your Text Fancy!

HOW TO USE FANCY CALLIGRAPHY FONTS

Have you ever seen graphics with a calligraphy font with lots of fancy swirls and lines, but when you got that font, it was plain and boring? It is because of different glyphs available within a single font family. This short guide will show you how to access them and use font glyphs to make your text look fancy.

How to Use Font Glyphs

In this post, I will be using a font called Vanilla Daisy. Below you can see how the words ‘Designer Blogs’ looks written out using this font and an example of using some of the glyphs included with Vanilla Dais.

Isn’t it cool? Now let’s learn how to use glyphs and making any text fancier.


#1 Open your text file

To start working with glyphs, you will need a file with some text. Feel free to open an already existing project or create a blank one just to follow this tutorial. I’m starting with a new Photoshop file where I’m adding two-line of text. Both are the same size, color and use Vanilla Daisy.


#2 Turn on the Glyphs panel

To access the Glyphs panel, you need to turn it on first. Go to the top menu and click on the Window. From the drop-down menu pick Glyphs.

Important: If there is a checkbox next to Glyhps, it means that your panel is already turned on!


#3 Access Glyphs panel

Once the panel is turned on, you can access it by clicking on the cursive A icon on the right.

You will notice that some of the letters in this panel have a small black square (or arrow) in the bottom right corner. It means that they have various options you can choose from.


#3 Replace letter with a glyph

The easiest way of finding options for the letter you are looking for is by clicking that letter in the Glyph tab or highlighting it in your text. After that, you can switch the Glyphs tab to show alternatives for your selected letter instead of an entire font.

Click the one you want and Photoshop will swap it out for you. 

You cna also use the small glyph tab that should appear next to the highlighted letter in your project.


That’s all! Now you can enhance your text using the full potential of your fonts.

The other great thing about the Glyphs panel is that you can scroll through the glyphs panel to see every character available within a particular font and sometimes find some hidden nuggets that are a bonus to that font.

Be honest: Do you ever look at your phone while walking in a crowded hallway at school or on a busy sidewalk? Do you see others doing this? Have you ever thought about how this simple action might affect the people around you? A recent experiment by Japanese researchers revealed how just a few distracted walkers can throw off the movements of a whole crowd.

In this lesson, you’ll learn more about the experiment — how it was conducted, what researchers found and what the implications are for individuals and society. Then we invite you to evaluate several solutions for stopping distracted walking or to propose one of your own.

Imagine, as the researchers you will read about in the featured article did, you want to study the effects of distracted walking on crowd movement.

First, make a prediction: What do you think would happen if several people were walking while looking at their phones in a crowded school hallway or on a busy sidewalk? How might these distracted walkers affect the way the crowd moves, if at all? Why do you think this would happen?

Now watch the 30-second video embedded at the top of this post, which shows one of the experiments researchers created to study the effects of distracted walking.

You might watch the video several times. First, get a sense of the experiment:

Then watch it again to observe what the experiment shows about the effect of distracted walking on a crowd:

  • What patterns do you notice in the way the crowd moves, if any?

  • How do the people in the red hats move compared to those in the yellow hats?

  • What effect do the distracted walkers have on the crowd as a whole? How close was your prediction to the outcome of this experiment?

Read the article, then answer the following questions:

1. How is walking through a crowd “like a dance we perform with those around us,” according to the article? Why does looking at your phone disrupt that dance?

2. Hisashi Murakami, a professor at Kyoto Institute of Technology, and his colleagues conducted a series of experiments to study the effects of distracted walkers on crowd movement. What did they observe about crowd movement in the first experiment, with no distracted walkers?

3. In what ways was crowd movement affected in a later experiment, when distracted walkers were at the front of the pack?

4. Why might looking at one’s phone have these effects?

5. What are the real-world implications of this study? What does it reveal to us about the ways we navigate crowds? How might individuals and cities use this information to improve crowd movement in the smartphone era?

Now that you know the effects distracted walking can have on crowds, what should be done to combat it?

Look at four solutions:

  • Redesign Cities: In the article, researchers suggest that architects and city planners take distracted walkers and their effect on crowds into account when designing buildings and cities. In 2019, the city of Manchester in Britain introduced a pedestrian “slow lane” for people using their mobile phones.

  • Take Personal Responsibility: In “Texting While Walking Is Dangerous. Here’s How to Stop.,” Brian X. Chen suggests that individuals take control of their technology use and employ several strategies to not look at their phones while walking.

  • Outlaw Texting While Walking: Some cities have gone as far as banning distracted walking. In Honolulu you can be fined up to $35 for viewing your electronic device while crossing streets.

  • Install an App: Several apps have been developed to help people manage walking and looking at their devices. For example, Type n Walk lets users type while using their phone’s camera to see what is ahead of them (though how well it works is up for debate). Another app, called Look Up, reminds pedestrians to take in the sights and sounds around them and engage with other humans.

Which of these solutions, if any, do you think would be most effective for pedestrian traffic snarls and collisions on city sidewalks or crowded hallways? Why? You can read more about each idea by clicking the linked articles or conducting your own research.

If you don’t think any of these ideas would work well, propose your own solution. Explain it in detail and why you think it would be the most effective fix for distracted walking.

Should Corporations Take Political Stands?

Georgia Republicans on March 25 passed a sweeping law to restrict voting access in the state. Before the vote, the biggest corporations in Georgia declined to weigh in. However, after the legislation was signed into law, Delta Air Lines and Coca-Cola reversed course and both expressed their “crystal clear” opposition to it.

Should large corporations stay out of politics? Or, do they have an obligation to speak out on issues important to their values?

Companies that remained silent last week as Georgia Republicans rushed to pass a law to restrict voting access reversed course on Wednesday in the face of mounting outrage from activists, customers and a coalition of powerful Black executives.

Delta Air Lines, Georgia’s largest employer, had made only general statements in support of voting rights last week and had declined to take a position on the legislation. That muted response drew fierce criticism, as well as protests at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and calls for a boycott.

But on Wednesday, Ed Bastian, Delta’s chief executive, made a stark reversal. “I need to make it crystal clear that the final bill is unacceptable and does not match Delta’s values,” he wrote in an internal memo that was reviewed by The New York Times.

Coca-Cola, another of Georgia’s largest companies, which had also declined to take a position on the legislation before it passed, made a similarly worded statement.

“I want to be crystal clear,” said James Quincey, Coca-Cola’s chief executive. “The Coca-Cola Company does not support this legislation, as it makes it harder for people to vote, not easier.”

Less than a day before the abrupt reversals, a group of prominent Black executives called on companies to publicly oppose a wave of similarly restrictive voting bills that Republicans are advancing in almost every state.

But the statements won’t change the outcome in Georgia, where the new law introduced stricter voter identification requirements for absentee balloting, limited drop boxes in predominantly Black neighborhoods and expanded the legislature’s power over elections.

“It is regrettable that the sense of urgency came after the legislation was passed and signed into law,” said Darren Walker, the president of the Ford Foundation and a board member at Ralph Lauren, Pepsi and Square.

Lesson of the Day: ‘A Union Drive at Amazon’

To learn more about the purpose of unions, read this excerpt from Teen Vogue, “What a Labor Union Is and How It Works” by Kim Kelly:

Unions facilitate the process of collective bargaining, which allows an organized group of workers to sit down with their employers, address concerns, make demands, and negotiate a legally binding contract to determine their terms of employment, which includes pay, benefits, hours, workplace safety, severance, health care, family leave, diversity, company transparency, and more. It offers workers a seat at the table, and allows them to directly advocate for themselves and their coworkers. A union also provides workers with guidance, organizational resources, and can offer legal counsel throughout the bargaining process, as well as support and resources after the contract is finalized. Union members select their own officers and representatives and make decisions collectively.

Listen to the first 37 minutes of “The Daily” podcast episode “A Union Drive at Amazon,” then answer the following questions:

1. How did Jennifer Bates’s experience as an Amazon worker change over time?

2. What is your reaction to the “time off task” system at Amazon? Some workers appreciated this system, while others found it oppressive. How might you feel about having your time working, or resting, monitored in this way?

3. How did communication happen at the Amazon warehouse? How did that system contribute to some workers feeling isolated and unsupported?

4. The podcast details different surveillance methods that were used in the Amazon warehouse. Why do you think Amazon watched its workers in this way? Do you think they have a right to do so, or does it infringe on workers’ privacy?

5. What was the breaking point for Ms. Bates that made her want to form a union?

6. How did Amazon change its policies after workers started to have conversations about unionizing? Amazon claimed that those changes were not made in response to the union, but why did Ms. Bates and other workers feel suspicious about the changes?

7. Why do Ms. Bates and the other union activists want to have a union at Amazon? What are the implications of a win, not just for Ms. Bates, but for labor unions more generally?
