5 Ways Codecademy Docs Can Help Your Job Search

One of the hardest things about landing your first job in tech is meeting the experience requirements for entry-level positions. Even with top-notch coding skills and a growing portfolio of projects, you’ll need to show recruiters that you’ve got what it takes to do the job.

When we recently interviewed hiring managers for entry-level tech roles, they all agreed that the resume is the most important document in a candidate’s application. Your resume is not just a list of your technical skills and work history, it’s also an opportunity to flex your personal projects and open-source contributions.

We created Codecademy Docs to give people some helpful reference material when they need a quick refresher or a method or concept. As an open-contribution resource that lives on GitHub, writing Docs can also be a great way to build a portfolio of technical content that you can link to on your resume. Here are five ways that contributing to Docs can give you an edge in your job search.

Learn something new for free

Showcase your technical know-how

Contributing to coding documentation shows recruiters you understand the nuances of programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Software developers and engineers often build and work with large and intricate codebases. While you’re not expected to remember everything, you do need a strong understanding of programming tools, standards, and best practices.

Another bonus? Contributing to Docs also demonstrates your proficiency with GitHub — a popular cloud-based code repository developers use to store and manage their projects. You’ll see GitHub listed as a requirement on many job postings, so it’s a great inclusion for your resume. If you’ve never used GitHub before, check out our course Learn Git & GitHub to familiarize yourself with the platform. Then read our Docs contributor guide to get step-by-step instructions for writing and submitting your first entry.

Demonstrate your communication and collaboration skills

Developers need to know how to communicate effectively with folks on their technical teams as well as non-technical stakeholders, like marketers and sales teams. That often includes presenting complex technical concepts and processes in a way that’s easy to understand.

Writing documentation not only shows that you can distill complicated subjects into easy-to-read language, but also that you can collaborate with a larger team. All Docs are reviewed by Codecademy team members who provide feedback and suggestions before entries are finalized and published. Once you’re hired in a developer role, you’ll have team members reviewing your code on GitHub all the time, so Docs is a great way to practice the workflow. Making your first pull request can feel a little intimidating, but you got this! Read this blog for some tips for making your first PR on GitHub.

Engage with the open-source community

Contributing to Docs gives you a chance to feed two birds with one scone. Writing documentation will help reinforce your knowledge and provide a deeper understanding of a given subject. And by contributing to Docs, you’ll also assist in countless other learners’ growth and development by providing a helpful educational resource, so it’s a nice way to give back to your programming peers.

Not to mention, extracurricular activities like open-source projects show that you have a genuine interest in the field — and that you’re willing to go the extra mile, which signals to hiring managers that you’re passionate about coding.

Earn clout

GitHub keeps track of your contributions, and having a few Docs under your belt can add to your professional reputation and even help you develop your personal brand. It can also help you qualify to join Codecademy’s Code Crew, our team of super users that have access to exclusive networking events in return for their contributions to the community. Check out this blog to learn more about the Code Crew and how to get involved.

Keep your skills sharp

As you immerse yourself in coding documentation, you’ll learn more about your preferred tools and languages. Learning and upskilling is important in any job, but developers have an acute need for continuous learning, because the tools we work with are constantly evolving.

How Contributing to Codecademy Docs Makes You Better at Coding

How Contributing to Codecademy Docs Makes You Better at Coding

Learning how to code doesn’t stop once you complete a course or hit your weekly learning target. From practice projects to coding influencers on social media, there are tons of creative ways to keep enhancing and understanding the skills you pick up in our courses.

One free resource that you should check out is Docs, our community-driven resource for coding documentation. Docs is an open-contribution resource that lives on GitHub, so anyone can contribute to it, suggest edits if they spot an error, and access the entries. For lots of learners, Docs is their entry into the world of open-source software

Learners like you turn to Docs when they need to reference a coding term or find specific syntax, so contributing Docs entries is a way to pay it forward and help other aspiring devs. A delightful bonus? You’ll be improving your own coding skills at the same time. Here are a handful of ways that getting involved with Docs can make you a better programmer, collaborator, and Codecademy community member.

Learn something new for free

Get expert feedback

Here’s what makes Docs reliable: Every Docs entry is reviewed by members of the Codecademy team, so you can trust that the concepts and explanations are legit and accurate. Rather than asking an AI chatbot to explain JavaScript syntax to you, or going down a Google rabbithole just to find a definition, you can check the thousands of Docs entries and quickly find an expert-vetted answer. (And BTW, you can rest assured that none of the Docs entries are AI-generated; that’s against our plagiarism policy.)

As a contributor, Docs is a free way to have your code reviewed by a real live human expert who really knows their stuff. Docs maintainers check entries for things like technical accuracy, formatting standards, typos or bugs, and plagiarism. Their feedback can help you understand where you made mistakes, challenge you to re-think certain areas, and motivate you to keep learning and contributing.

Having another person review your code and knowing how to incorporate feedback is a big part of being a developer — and getting an experienced programmer to check your work is priceless. If you plan to add your Docs contributions to your technical portfolio [link to other blog], you’ll stand out for having detailed, error-free entries to your name.

Master GitHub and Git

The Docs repo lives on GitHub, so while you’re creating useful content for your fellow code enthusiasts, you’re also getting valuable experience with the wildly popular online development platform and its version control system, Git. Whether you’ve recently landed an entry-level job on a tech team, or you just want to contribute to open-source projects for fun, there’s a very good chance you’ll need to collaborate and work on GitHub. Docs is a welcoming space where you can practice using Git commands and get oriented in GitHub.

Our free course Learn Git & GitHub will walk you through everything you need to know about using the platform, and we also have lots of free courses that cover specific GitHub concepts, like Learn GitHub: Best Practices and Learn Git: Introduction.

Learn by teaching

It’s often said that teaching someone else to do something is one of the best ways to learn. Think about it: Putting yourself in a beginner’s shoes, communicating instructions in your own words, and demonstrating a skill further enhances your understanding of a topic. You can reinforce the coding concepts that you’re learning in our courses by writing your own explanations in Docs. For example, say you’re learning Kotlin: You could write new Kotlin Docs entries and essentially use Docs as a note-taking tool.

Everyone learns differently, and the Docs that you write could help your fellow learners understand complicated ideas and techniques. In many of our top courses, you can hover over key terms and read through descriptions that are sourced right from Docs. This helps quickly refresh your memory as you’re learning, and enables you to check out more detailed explanations on Docs if you want to dig deeper.

Easily revisit concepts

It’s a common misconception that developers memorize everything there is to know about coding — even devs with decades of experience look things up constantly. In fact, the 2023 Stack Overflow Developer Survey found that most professional developers spend 30-60 minutes a day searching for answers and solutions to problems.

No matter where you are in your coding journey, you can bookmark Docs and continue to reference it as you learn new languages or work on more advanced projects. Using Docs is definitely not a crutch or a cheat, it’s a way to be a resourceful and more efficient developer.

Want to learn more about how Docs can boost your potential as a developer? Read this blog about [link to other blog] how to use Docs in your resume and job search, and meet the Docs contributors in our Code Crew of super users. Then start exploring the Docs contributor guide to get started.

Continuous Learning: What Your Business Needs to Know

0
Continuous Learning: What Your Business Needs to Know

Learning is a lifelong process. This is a truth for learning for personal and professional development because, through learning, you never cease to grow. In the workplace, continuous learning can serve as a driver to career success. Below, we outline the concept of continuous learning and explore ways that you can set yourself and your business up for market success.

What is continuous learning?

Continuous learning can best be described as the process of learning and acquiring new skills and knowledge. It’s an indispensable tool for advancement and making headway into ventures. It’s a process that circumvents career stagnation and allows you to reach your goals and full potential. Learning can take various formats like job shadowing, training programmes, coaching, formal courses, and informal learning.

What is the importance of continuous learning in the workplace?

The world is constantly evolving. With this change, how people work, and businesses function is changing. Industries and businesses are becoming innovative and adaptive, and looking for ways to edge the competition. Therefore, to remain relevant and successful in the marketplace, businesses need to take action to keep up with the changes and stay ahead of the game. Continuous learning is a survival tactic.

What are the benefits of continuous learning?

Companies are open to flexible working solutions and must meet the demand of the workforce. Lifelong learning creates a platform for companies to place themselves as an enviable and valuable employer to keep and attract high-value staff. Additionally, organisations can reap the following benefits:

  • Invested and engaged employees who stay longer in the company
  • Staff is better equipped and prepared for any changes because of the skills they possess
  • Business growth resulting from the productive, innovative, and creative thinking of employees
  • Shows employees that they are valued, and their growth is supported

Ultimately, continuous learning and development are both for the individuals who will perform better in the roles and for your company, in how it positions itself as a growing solution-oriented business.

Are there any great continuous learning examples?

Now, at first glance, it may seem like there’s no time to invest in taking learning courses, but the good news is that there are various examples of learning that you can use.

  • Formal continuous learning

Formal learning is the traditional learning method that individuals use to gain new skills and knowledge. They are organised and purpose-driven toward a specific learning goal. Some examples of this are workshops, conferences, organisation-led training programmes, or courses from a university or college.

In self-directed learning, there is no restricted or formal approach to learning. It can take on various forms like watching instructional videos, listening to Ted TALKS or podcasts, reading and conducting research on a particular subject, or exploring and experimenting.

As the name implies, social learning is a style of learning where the learner engages, interacts, deliberates, and collaborates with others to gain knowledge or understanding of a topic or skill. This can include coaching, mentoring, working with other employees, and using social media platforms as a learning resource to expand their knowledge in an area.

Whatever approach you choose to take to learning, the key is to be active and engaged to make the process worthwhile.

Is there any difference between lifelong learning and continuous learning?

You may often hear the terms continuous learning and lifelong learning used interchangeably. But depending on the context they are used in they can mean something different. The latter is mostly associated with learning at the individual level. This means the learner has made learning a part of their lifestyle and is voluntarily learning skills and want to do so long-term. For example, a lifelong learner is someone who has committed to spending an hour daily reading or developing a new skill.

Continuous learning on the other hand, while it too can be characterised by commitment, it is more temporary and used in the formal context. An example of this is someone who is enrolled in a course for their job and its goal is to learn a new skill to help their performance and enhance productivity.

What are the ways lifelong learning will benefit your business?

Continuous learning is an investment and the return on this seed will be to the advantage of your business.

  • Your business will remain relevant
  • You’ll be ready for the unexpected
  • Boost your brand
  • Competent employees represent you – they’re the face of your business.
  • New ideas for days – The more employees know the more ideas they come up with and share.
  • Improve the course your business is on – Educated and trained employees see things the leadership doesn’t

How do you build a continuous learning environment in your company?

Learning and development are essential for an organisation’s success. You not only need to invest resources and time in it, but you also need to create a culture and environment that your employees can buy into and thrive in.

  • Plan with an LMS
  • Get your team on board and excited
  • Encourage learning as the sole basis of your business
  • Create learning experiences
  • Reward learning
  • Create a mentorships
  • Monitor employee developments
  • Make it relevant
  • Make it social
  • Ensure it’s aligned with your business objectives

Embrace learning and invest in your employees – you’ll reap the benefits

Employees want encouragement, recognition, and love learning new things. They also want to know that the company they devote their time and energy to cares about their growth. Employees at any level want to grow, to be challenged, to feel like they are on par with their colleagues in other organisations, and so much more. Continuous learning helps them to get promoted, get more responsibilities, be more fulfilled, and that their work and what they do has meaning. When you choose to put financial resources to train and equip your staff, you’ll reap long-term benefits.

Alison can help with your continuous learning and make your employees satisfied – for free.

Word of the Day: perfunctorily

Word of the Day: perfunctorily

The word perfunctorily has appeared in seven articles on NYTimes.com in the past year, including on May 19 in “How a Psychologist Confronted Her Own Bipolar Disorder” by Kay Redfield Jamison:

The most important thing my psychiatrist did during that first meeting was give me hope that I would get better. My illness was treatable. He thought it very likely that I would respond well to lithium and that psychotherapy would help. He would be there with me. I could do it.

All seemed futile, but his belief that I would get well, and stay well, continued throughout my treatment. His belief was not naïve, nor did he perfunctorily offer hope; his advice was clinically informed and seemed unassailable. He acted on the belief that the power of faith is one that a good doctor uses as a matter of course. And he used it well.

Can you correctly use the word perfunctorily in a sentence?

Based on the definition and example provided, write a sentence using today’s Word of the Day and share it as a comment on this article. It is most important that your sentence makes sense and demonstrates that you understand the word’s definition, but we also encourage you to be creative and have fun.

Then, read some of the other sentences students have submitted and use the “Recommend” button to vote for two original sentences that stand out to you.

If you want a better idea of how perfunctorily can be used in a sentence, read these usage examples on Vocabulary.com.

Coursera partners with Pearson to launch “tri-credit” pathway to in-demand careers for high school students

Coursera partners with Pearson to launch “tri-credit” pathway to in-demand careers for high school students

Coursera partners with Pearson to launch “tri-credit” pathway to in-demand careers for high school students

By Marni Baker-Stein, Chief Content Officer

I’m excited to announce that Coursera is partnering with Pearson to launch a new Pearson Connections Academy initiative that offers its high school students a “tri-credit” pathway to in-demand careers. Through this initiative, Pearson Connections Academy students can earn high school credit, an industry-recognized Professional Certificate, and college credit through Acadeum.

“We’re making the college and career prep experience for high school students more meaningful with new learning opportunities that set them up for post-secondary success– whether that means planning for two- or four-year college upon graduation or opting to earn job-ready credentials while in high school, or both. This is about connecting students to their unique interests and giving them the support they need to be confident about their next steps.”

– Nik Osborne, SVP of Business Development at Pearson Virtual Schools

For the first phase, Connections Academy students will have access to select entry-level Professional Certificates on Coursera, all of which are authored by leading companies and industry experts and have ACE Credit Recommendation. Students can earn college credit toward over 150 U.S. bachelor’s degrees in the Acadeum partner network for each eligible credential they complete.

These certificates, designed for people with no degree or prior work experience, will allow students to explore potential career paths and develop the skills needed to land an entry-level digital job. According to a recent Coursera survey, 86% of U.S. employers agree that earning an industry micro-credential strengthens a candidate’s job application, while 74% believe that this credential improves a candidate’s ability to perform in an entry-level position.

Perceptions of college degrees generally fall into two camps: “everybody needs a degree” or “nobody needs a degree.” But neither is true: we need more flexible, affordable, and relevant pathways for students to gain employment, earn credit, and pursue a degree. With this tri-credit initiative in partnership with Pearson and Acadeum, we’re creating multiple ways for high school students to unlock opportunity in the digital economy, whether they want to break into an in-demand career right away or continue to a college degree.

10 Tips for Blog Beginners You Must Know

Starting a blog can be overwhelming, especially if you’re new to the game. There are so many things to consider, from content creation to promotion and everything in between. As a beginner blogger, it’s essential to focus your time and energy on the right things to make the most of your efforts. In this post, you will find 10 tips for blog beginners, which will help you know where to focus your time as you get started.

Tips for Blog Beginners

To begin on the right track, I have compiled a list of ten tips that will aid you in your journey. These tips will help you start strong and keep up the momentum.

#1 Set Goals

Regardless of what kind of blogging you do, remember that it’s important to set goals. They don’t need to be big. Goals can be as simple as how many posts you want to post in a week or how many followers you’d like to gain by a certain date.

Setting goals and then working to achieve those goals is a major key to blogging success.

If you need help with that, check out our ultimate blog planner.

#2 Start Planning

Planners save time

Using a blog planner is the best way to grow your blog and reach your blogging goals. Planning saves you time and helps you run a more effective blog. With the time you’ll save through planning, you’ll have more time to relax and do the things you love most.

Our blog planner has been carefully designed for bloggers who want to succeed and can be found here: Ultimate Blog Planner.

#3 Find Your Community

As a blogger, it’s crucial to establish a sense of community. This community is essentially made up of other bloggers who can serve as your mentors and help you learn new things. Additionally, your readers make up a significant part of your community. Make sure to reply to comments left by your readers, and always be honest with your opinions.

Your blog (and you) can’t grow without other people, so always cherish and remember the value of the people in your community.

#4 Learn to use Social Media

Social media is one of the most powerful tools you have for growing your blog. Using social media correctly can help drive traffic to your blog. Learning how to use 2-3 social media outlets well, will do so much for the growth of your blog.

Find the social media outlets you love most and then spend time learning how to best use each one. Focus on those as the primary source of social media promotion for your blog.

#5 Build a Mailing List

If you want to grow your business or blog, you absolutely MUST make building your email list your top priority.

Email is less competitive than social media and is far more personal and reliable. Setting up a mailing list takes just a few minutes. Learn how to set up a mailing list here:

#6 Quality over Quantity

Whether you run a personal blog or manage a company website, remember the importance of quality over quantity when it comes to posting on your blog.

Creating posts that contain valuable, well-written content will attract readers, improve your SEO, and build credibility.

#7 Use Good Quality Images

Using quality images is a must in the world of blogging. Images in a blog post are the first thing readers notice when landing on a post. Using multiple eye-catching photos will motivate your readers to want to stay and read the full blog post.

If you aren’t a photographer, you can take photography classes to improve your photos or use professional stock images to help your posts shine. Using gorgeous photography is a surefire way to grow your blog.

#8 Perfect Your Blog Design

You only get one chance to make a great first impression with your blog, so make it a memorable one for your visitors with an impressive blog design.

Yes, content is key, but if someone finds one of your blog posts on Pinterest and then clicks over to your blog to read the full article and your blog design is unprofessionally slopped together, it’s going to detract from your content instead of enhancing it like a good blog design should. Our Blogger and WordPress designs are a fast and affordable way to get a stand-out design.

#9 Don’t Forget About Links

Links are a powerful tool for growing your blog. Adding internal links that take your readers from one blog post to another helpful blog post is a key way to boost your SEO by building page credibility. It will also increase your page views as it invites people to stay on your site longer and makes your site more user-friendly.

Never underestimate the power of links!

#10 Enjoy Blogging

Finding something you love and are passionate about when it comes to blogging is key to finding success as a blogger. If you don’t love the topics you blog about, blogging can become a real chore and you’ll feel less motivated to do what it takes to grow your blog and content. So find your passion and make that what you blog about.

Regardless of whether you are new to blogging or a blog veteran, tell us which of these tips have been the most important for you in your blogging journey!
